  • John Heisz will be visiting my shop this Thursday, so I figured this would be a cool opportunity to do a live Q&A with both of us.
    More about this here: woodgears.ca/mi...

      hey john did you say you were a train engineer?
      i think i remember an old video of yourse explaining your job while doing some renovations to a school door ... how's that?

    • @JohnHeisz
      @JohnHeisz 8 лет назад +12

      don trump
      That was more of a joke. In construction, we would say that a particularly inept engineer was a train engineer, as in not a real engineer.

      John, 3 Questions please:
      - Now that Matthias has moved, is he closer to you than 4 hours?
      - Will you two be doing another live session like this one? (I hope so!!)
      - Do you watch Mustie1 videos??

    11 seconds in... "we are live probably"... the eybrow raises, head turns and the eyes question, shoulder shrug, small hurmpf, quirk smile, grab a drink... at 28 seconds more eyebrow... Matthias you were teetering on the edge of witnessing the conversion to Primal John. Then you just kept poking the bear throughout. Great to see you two bantering together.

    A cool idea for a live Q & A like this would be to have a 3rd person behind the scenes screening the questions that are coming in. That person would filter out the noise and trolling, and queue up the questions for you two to answer. The questions would then be displayed on a larger screen so you can read them easier and faster. That way the two of you could sit there and chat without having to stare at the screen.

    Like a few other comments - one alteration is having a larger monitor frontwards near below or behind the camera tripod so you both are looking towards the camera. And the luxury of an off screen moderator/facilitator would mean a great improvement. Even in the rough it was entertaining and informative. Rest up and try this again.

    I kinda feel that the length of Paul Sellers' videos suits the vibe of his style of woodworking - more of an anti-fast food hand tools approach. Plus they tend to be more about technique than new or innovative designs - i.e. Woodgears videos aren't teaching you how to use a chisel, they're showing you an interesting project. To a degree, a lot of Sellers' videos are less about the end product and more about learning the processes - thus going through everything in detail makes sense.
    That's not to say there aren't plenty of producers putting out videos that could do with some serious editing; the "VerySuperCool Tools" guy does some great products, but he tends to take 30 minutes to say (often repeatedly, and then again in the next video in a series) what could have been edited into 3 minutes.

    • @matthiasrandomstuff2221
      @matthiasrandomstuff2221  8 лет назад +3

      True, I kind of figure you already know how to use a chisel and telling you how to do it is insulting your intelligence.

    • @gbspikyfish
      @gbspikyfish 8 лет назад +3

      Yeah, but my chisels (or hand planes, or spokeshaves, or saws) never seem to be quite as accurate as his. Must be the tools. Nothing to do with experience or talent ;)

  • @Don.Challenger

    I thought it quite good as a first attempt. You should be satisfied with the result and having done this now your understanding of the process should make ( for both of you ) it an easier effort in the future. Definitely at several points you had good interaction occurring though watching you two watching the comments stream by was occasionally painful so your initial idea to have a prepared list of questions as a fall back would be sensible. Would be helpful if there was a tool to divert quality questions from the train of repetition ( which wasn't specifically a viewer problem except in aggregate ). Do think about mounting occasional future editions you both will soon have a handle on it and it was valuable.

    My question would've been: Have you considered getting into some kind of metal founding or casting? How many RUclips keywords was that?
