Onyx is a silicate mineral and working with it releases silica dust. When inhaled, silica dust damages the lungs permanently and often leads to death. We see it a lot here in India among artisans who work with silicaceous rocks such as onyx and agate, and even granite which contains a good bit of quartz. As a medical doctor, I would strongly advocate the use of N95 respirators with exhalation valves; after all there's nothing more precious than good health and life. The glue being used is polyester resin, not epoxy. He adds 1 - 2% of organic peroxide which initializes the curing reaction of the resin. Powder is just some stone powder which he adds for to get paste like consistency. Epoxy resin would provide even stronger bond but it requires 1 - 7 days to reach it's max strength. Cured polyester resin begins to melt in temperatures over 80 Celsius, so the adapter piece is easy to remove by heating it. Probably the most common use of polyester resin is fiberglass wetting. Gel coat paints for boats are also often polyester resin based.

I had a friend who was a marble worker from Italy, who also did "scrap work" by using pieces of Marble and Onyx, and then gluing them together into shapes. Epoxied together but still holding together after 70+years. Epoxy works.
