  • Bell test number 2 from today, and as luck would have it, it actually involves bells! The system here is a 4100ES, however it's obviously not original to the building as all the devices outdate it. It's also set up as a zoned system, and not an addressable system. I was expecting the bells to sound in continuous, but to my surprise, they actually sounded in code-3! The strobes are a bit of a mixed bag, as most of the ones on the first floor are coded to code-3, however the ones in the basement and sub-basement flash normally. The strobe light seen at :43 and 1:00 is non-functional. We also found three defective bells. The defective strobe will be replaced with a new 4904-9178 strobe, as Simplex still manufactures it. Because Simplex no longer makes the 2901 bell series, Wheelock MB-G10-24s will be ordered to replace the defective bells.

    As you walk down into the boiler room you can see what appears to be a grey ex-autocall or some other old panel!

      Yeah, it does. I once used a setup similar to this, but with a 6" bell instead of a 10" bell. It reminds me even more of my middle school and high school, which has since had it's system upgraded to speaker/strobes.

      @@weatherdan882002 Yeah, yet another example of how fire alarm bells in the USA are becoming very scarce in real life, compared to the media. They're always being replaced with electronic horn/strobes or with voice-evac...

      @@weatherdan882002 Geez! And I thought one of the buildings at my friend's university originally having Space Age 2DCD+AV32 horn/lights in the bathrooms was bad enough! Of course since the upgrade to the Simplex 4100U system, several of those bathroom 2DCD+AV32s were replaced with Simplex 4906-9127 TrueAlert horn/strobes (also just as brutal) while others had 4906-9101 TrueAlert remote strobes replace the horn/lights.

    Those bells bring you back to the days of being at UAlbany, don't they Dan? Glad to hear that nonfunctioning strobe will be replaced, though I honestly didn't know that Simplex still made at least one of their older rectangular 4904-series strobes; I honestly thought that by now they would have replaced that entire line with their Truealert remote strobe counterparts instead.
    1:02 The strobe in the room before it might not be functioning, but that one certainly is! It *definitely* exceeds the ADA minimum requirement of 60 flashes per minute!
    2:18 Huh, no signals in that part of the building, odd. 2:20 *&* a smoke detector just hanging from the ceiling. Was that area under renovations or what?
    Is there a reason the video always stops _before_ you silence & reset the system?

    • @weatherdan882002
      @weatherdan882002  3 года назад +3

      Yeah, it definitely brought back memories. I knew about this setup all week as this is the building where the campus fire safety office is, so I was eager to test this building.
      I'm not sure why there are no signals in that one area of the building. It's part of the basement, so I'm not sure if they're just using it as storage or what.
      The reason I don't show the silence and reset is because I tend to interact with people towards the end. In this case, the gentleman whose face I blurred at 2:56 took me to show me the defective devices he found. To avoid getting people on camera and making them uncomfortable that I'm filming in the first place, I just end the video. There isn't much to see after the camera stops rolling anyway.
