    I'm really impressed at how well a practically stock disco goes!! I'm in the market for a new 4be and these disco's really got me thinking!!

      Once you get used to the driving style required to get traction control to work they are almost a go anywhere machine. As with any car they have known problems and when fixed they are generally reliable, good luck with your hunt for a D2.

      Both great cars. My buddy's stock D2 without cdl surprised me the other day. That D1 could do with some ratios, he'll have a lot more control. Disco 2 is a seriously underrated and misunderstood vehicle.

      Yeah I have seen people really struggle with D2 traction control but he seems to have it sorted no problem.

    Very impressive, though I think diff lockers are preferable to traction control, less spin.

    D2's were groundbreaking vehicles. As much clearance and articulation and gearing as any other stock h/d 4wd, but with a centre of gravity sitting about 15cm lower than the competition. Its that ultra-low COG and roll-centre that is their defining design characteristic. It makes them truly stable off-road, and unexpectedly car-like on-road. 19 years later and somehow Toyota still hasn't managed to crack that combo in their heavy 4wds...

      @izaacbanks3337 D1s are nearly as good, but BMW redesigned the roll-centre for the D2, swapping out the rear A-frame for a watts-link setup, and widened the track significantly. In addition, the replacement diesel for the D2, the TD5, is designed as an extraordinarily squat motor, enabling that characteristic very low bonnet line to be maintained while maintaining good ground clearance. These characteristics were engineered in from the start, and combine to make the big difference compared to the competition.

      @izaacbanks3337 most vehicles are ok if kept serviced etc. Landrovers included. I've had a 1999 D2 TD5 for 16 years, it's had a lot of hard offroad use and lapped Australia a few times for its 380000+km, and lots of hwy-speed work as well, and nothing much has ever gone wrong with it. The engine in particular- never done anything to it beyond routine servicing. I drive lots of different 4x4s for work, including all the usual suspects. To this day none match the overall performance balance that the D2 delivers standard, so I'm trying to keep it alive as long as I can.

    6:24 Guys look how easy is to damage the tires, after hitting the rock gets a sidewall ball.... Safe offroad and always inspect your vehicles after each ride.

      Thats not really any issue to the side wall at 6:24 Airing down allows the tyre to mould around objects and not get punctured. You are correct that looking over the car not just tyres is important, we take the time while airing up to do this. Thank you for dropping us a comment 👍

    Allot of people don't realize the magic in the Stock D2 are the versions with the center locking Diff. This is where the transfer case lock. Just wondering if this factory D2 has CDL?

      Dean S yes the D2s go really well in standard form. This d2 has cdl.

    The disco 1 and 2 are pretty under estimated off road vehicule. The truth is that the chassis, axles, gearbox, transfer case and engine are pretty much the same of the defender 110 with some minor chamges. I would like to own a 110 defender but here in italy a good one costs arround 15-18.000 euro. I payed mine disco 1 300tdi 3.000 euro and can go at least 80% the places an 110 can go for a fraction of the cost. Plus is more confortable than an 110.

    I own a disco II, and i have to say, driving with the traction control system is a funny feeling especially on this style of terrain. You'll lose traction and then all of a sudden the car will lurch forward as if un-phased. disco II's are awesome rigs :)

      Yes traction control is fun, but alway's to late. Traction in disco 3 or 4 works much better then in the disco 2. i can put the traction contol off and use rear and front lockers, much easier to drive and less stress one the drive line.Beautiful vid to watch.

      Raymond Logister : The issue with the later models is the weight though. They are just too darn heavy. Ive had Disco 1 through 4 (and soon 5) and my favourite highway cruiser is the 4, but off road it's still the 2 by quite some margin. Thats the one I trust to take me there and back off highway.

      bigbill74scots: I have the disco 2 with front and rear lockers. But i find the disco 1 the best for off road (light and not so long) Disco 3 and 4 are to heavy. But the 3 and the 4 are perfect cruisers for the highway and holiday's.

      Yes that i agree on though. if only they had given the operator an option to electronically "tighten" up the traction control. I have installed a Locker on the rear of my d2. When i dont want to lose momentum on a tricky up hill track i will usually engage it.

    patrol and landcruisers biggest fear: the discovery. my old disco 4 would climb obstacles 10x easier than my mates Gu patrol that was lifted 4 inches did. loved it so much. i had a few landcruisers and a patrol my self and i loved my disco 4 the most. sold it to buy a work ute but im about to buy a td5 disco 2 soon because i am so impressed with them

      NIGHT VIEW 2015 : Totally agree with you. Fresh out the box with the 4 channel abs doing the traction feed they were awesome. Great low and mid range power from the TD5 engine and not overly heavy. The best in its clas by some margin.

      dude its not really that there is "too much" electronics, its just the fact that a few of the vital d2 electronic component had factory flaws designed in to them.. If those known flaws were corrected, the d2 would be pretty much perfect electronic wise.

      NIGHT VIEW 2015 tbh i have had both and the 300 tdi is far better offroad, no elec to fuck up which i had on the air, ace, and tc, nothing beats the 300 diff lock

    I've never tried this sort of fun.Mine's always been getting dirty in mud then washing it in water. On a good day 'just' the outside gets dirty and wet...Off for a play later this month, which reminds me. I must replace my door seals......

    Despite being the first generation of TC from Land Rover it's still impressive. Eats brake pads though so I'd probably put at least a rear LSD in to help it out.

      With cdl engaged, tc acts half of the times, so not that much of pads abuse...

    another question about the twin locked discovery 1 did you just get the bull bar for a disco 2 and it just fit straight on or what website did you get the winch bar from i have a disco 1 my self and already don't the custom drawers in the back just wanting to make the from look allot meaner

      My first brake pads(and brembo discs once I was into it) change has been some months ago...219000 kms...around 200€. So...

      265000kms now...still the same pads and brembo discs going offroad almost everyday...
      Still lots of kms to do...
      Maybe not as bad as you stated...they'll go on I guess for some more years...cheers mate

      @@checa160 I used to own a D2 and went back to a D1 because my brakes simply burnt up during offroading, but with Disco's its always a gamble wether you bought a good or bad one :-) Guess you the lucky one! :-D

    I have a disco 1 2door with diesel that has bee sitting in storage last 12 years.. Looking to get it out and start some mods on it any suggestions and what i should do to it to get it started again

    twin/ 3 lock system is a tank, no comparison. perhaps the most modern 4x4 systems can match it, but doubt that

      the 99 D2 still has the center locking diff on the transfer case, just need to fabricate a lever and it will lock em up.

      I'd take the disco 2 with cdl(99-00) and add front and rear lockers at the same price of those for the disco1. So you have almost same driveline plus tc for easier stuff and you don't need to stop to lock...just lock the center diff and go till you find a difficult trial... just my opinion

    You can have twin locks for strength but I've got the one rear locker. lock one lock all. It's that simple... no arguments from the peanut gallery please.

    Some how I ended up with a Disco2 and some how my wife ended up with it being her car. She recently saw an accident between a Disco2 and another SUV. The Disco2 ended up driving over the other SUV. It was still running and the guy drove it off to the side of the road. The other SUV was dead and it looked like something had tried to eat the front end. I am never going to be able to get rid of it as long as she is alive after that.

    Love the Land Rover but I’d take a land cruiser any day over it, much more reliable and about equally off road worthy.

      Not even close. At least, not without a ton of mods. I've owned both and currently own a 2001 Disco II which beat my '70 Land Cruiser FJ40 hands down in every category except looks.

      @@checa160 ive been driving my 300 tdi as an everyday driver and an offroader ive owned 3 landcruisers the tdi leaves them for dead its more fun to drive and prob better off road its super reliable , toyotas are good vehicles but no soul .....but ive owned 3 landcruisers including a short wheel base rag top man i loved that car wish i never sold it ...( I am still waiting for my landrover to breakdown maybe im just lucky lol its been 2 years so far)

      @@davidgray9897. I was just kiding. Nothing against the land cruisers. Reliable engines, confortable and good looks. But they don’t climb as a LR does. And there’s flaws in quality as well(rear axles, rust…).
      LR quality is not the best either. And after 20 years you can probsbly see a toyota is a bit more healthy in plastics and materials compared to the discos even though the discos are really well built in that matter(mainly 300 and series 2)…
      But it looks like the owners of LR units don’t hide the miseries of their cars, while toyota owners never confess all rhe times they had to go to a workshop for repairs…hence the reason of my joke. Cheers. Enjoy that 300. It’s a great car!!
