- Join lovable professional tiler Roy Southby from roytiles.com as he takes you through how to re-tile and renovate your concrete swimming pool, and give your pool water an inviting new look.
How much does it cost to renovate or re-tile you concrete pool? Well the cost can be affordable if you do it yourself with the help of Roy Southby as your DIY pool tiling teacher. You could even tile your new pool as part of your pool installation.
Roy starts with the preparation of the pool surface, and a detailed run through of the tiling tools including the time-saving UltraSpreader, notched trowel, and tiling supplies needed for the completion of your project.
The tile installation is started by marking the wall of the pool at the water line, and using blue mosaic ceramic tiles, or you could choose the color of tile to suit your interior design choice.
Detailed techniques are explained in Roy's entertaining manner on how to remove pool lights, pool return 'eyeballs', as well as easy to follow methods for measuring and cutting tiles for pool steps.
When it comes to the floor, Roy uses his own UltraSpreader, available to purchase from roytiles.com/collections/tili..., shipping worldwide. This tool is a real time saver and allows the floor tiles to be laid in quick time. It allows the professional tiler to save time and money by completing the job quick time, and the DIY tiler to get a more professional job.
Some of the tile cutting processes are for experienced contractors and care should be taken by inexperienced people trying DIY tiling.

Just curious. How did your project turn out?
Thank you Roy. You gave me confidence that I can tile my fish pond. You are down to earth with plenty of skills and experience.
Roy. I must say. What you did here is a very difficult task. And you pulled it off quite beautifully. What a great job!
Excellent video. I loved the cardboard marking trick around corners.

Enjoyed that Roy. You may have saved me bundles of money with your tutorial. Reckon taking your time is the key at first. Thank you 👍👍
Such beautiful craftsmanship! Thanks for sharing.
I could have watched this for a few more hours. What great work.
I'm a renderer with the same D13 Hitachi drill I've been using for 20+ years. It looks exact same as yours, down to the worn out mixing bit. Fantastic drill. Few new brushes and 5-6 new leads from the labourers breaking it from getting it wrapped around the mixing bit is all its needed.
I have a job coming up soon, and this video has been invaluable in helping me understand how to do it better, thanks for uploading it 👍🏻
AMAZING JOB!!! Thanks for your time and into 👍🏻
found your channel today, and i wanted to say thank you for taking some of the anxiety away from the thought of doing this work myself. appreciate it!

Legend great video mate thanks for passing your knowledge on
Fantastic work and loved the video Roy! All the best from a pool guy in Australia :)
Amazing work Roy. Can you retile over a fully tiled pool? How do you deal with air bubblers pipes in spas, and secondly the existing spa/therapy jets (as there is no insert like there is in pool returns)
Thanks Roy. Extremely useful sir. much appreciated
Thank you for sharing Sir.
Nicely done Roy...respect frm algeria.
GR8 video, Pool are an insane amount of work. I had my concrete freeform pool sandblasted then sealed and epoxied my own 20 yrs. ago. Now I'm looking to Pebbletec or similar versus a plaster finish. Tile will last the longest but I doubt I will go there.
This is a huge job done by a highly skilled professional. You can't do it yourself.
Nice work!
Fantastic job Roy. You are very relaxing to watch. (Bruce Forsyths young brother.) I'm a british guy here woking on pools in florida where all they use is stucco, for the finish. After nine ytears, finally somebody has asked me to tile a pool, but it is a kidney shaped freeform gunite pool. This video is helping me to decide if its even possible. Im guessing there will be a lot of splicing.
Where in Florida
so much respect to your back,i know it musst have hurt from tume to time.
good looking sir🤝🏾
That’s a LOT of work!
superb Thanks Roy
Thank you
Excellent job 👏
I worked for Evans/Radford pool pool plastering in san diego . We were the origanle company who first started using jack hammers and striping the plaster all completely off to ensure the best bond possible!! And they were right they removed EVERY SPEC OF WHITE FROM THE GUNITE recently 2as at a house where I bricked a d tiled a pool tbeen Evans/ Radford plastered it over 35 years ago a t it looks new still ot a loose brick tile Ora single thing g ever needed fixing !!!it was maintained by someone who knew how to properly take care of it and that helps
You are a legend. Watched your videos of pool renovations multiple times. I just wanted to get your advice. I have Quartzon pool. Some supply specialists have indicated I need to chip out all the Quartzon, render again, moisture barrier and waterproof prior to tiling. If as in this video I just fix the dummy spots and adress any cracks is it a suitable finish to tile over the top (deals with hydrostatic pressures okay?).
I like this guy!!!
Thanks Herb, I love your channel, it brought back heaps of childhood memories ( I subscribed)
saludos maestro Roy desde México
You are amazing!!!
Thank you for your very instructive video, you are a true craftsman. My only wish is to see how it was grouted.
Mashallah, you are an artist, may God protect you. I hope to be with you and learn from you
Haha this guy is hilarious. Thank you for the video.
great work i have never seen a pool completely tiled before looks amazing. i would like to see the pool with the water in it. you would add same chemicals as usual.
Looks good. My pool walls are porcelain and floor is concrete. Will tile adhere to walls? also what glue and grout is needed?
Hello, Great video. I’ve got a 40+ yr concrete/plaster pool under renovation. The plaster is in really bad shape and I’m removing it all with hammer jack with flat chisel so it’s just taking the plaster off. Also taking off all waterline tile. How do I prep the slightly rough concrete for tile? Also it seems easier to use the 2 inch tiles when splicing/cutting is required. Mine is rectangular 2 ft shallow to 7 ft deep, and roughly 14ft wide x 38ft long with only 1 step. I’d really like to tile it myself but concerned about the concrete base prep work. Thanks for any feedback/suggestions. So you used skimmer for initial vertical run. Did you just take perpendicular of skimmer vertical line for floor chalk line? How did you determine floor centerline or does it really matter as long as it is close?
Hi Roy, is the super spreader ok to use on the 300 x 300 mosaic tiles to do my pool, I purchased on of you but since noticed you were using the ultra on your floor, thanks in advance
Great video! Question, while the tile will last "for my life time", what about the grout? Don't i have to regrout every 5 to 10 years? Does that mean i have to go line by grout line, taking it off to apply new grout?
Amazing
I envy u , man. What a great back u got.
Well, thank you. I would like to have the descriptions of your tools, please thanks
Great video. Can you tell me if I can install glass tiles over the diamondbrite pool? If so what would you recommend? Thanks in advance.
you are insane !!
Great video Roy. Thank you. Could you recommend a supplier of tiles?
Excellent video, thanks a million! I have a pool with a similar sand/quartz finish as this one and was looking at tiling it with mosaic tiles, so this was enormously helpful! Happily the pool is rectangular so should involve less cutting.
When I get around to doing it I'll be sure to order your special spreader!!
Thanks again!
😅p😢😊
Roy when your tiling over tiles do you need to bond the tiles or score them 🤔
I wish you can help me with my pool. You are excellent.
Amazing skills and workmanship Sir., But, - How on earth do you manage to do this strenuous work without dislocating 5 disks? How's your lower-back coping? Its a genuine question & I am probably half your age.
Hello, good morning from Perú, I an love father, you love 🇵🇪🌎💘👍💪👋🖐️🙏
Cool man, but as well as glasses, I'd say where an n95 (especially when flat blading those glazed tiles) super silicosus
Hello, Mr. Roy. Do you need to add HYDRO BAN Cementitious Waterproofing before adding the cement? I am trying to do my own pool, thank you.
I would like to use glass tile, I am in California and will use a salt filter. What advice would you suggest. I have done many intricate tile projects over 40 years.
Our pool needs re-plastering but the tiles look good do I need to replace them because I am re-plastering?
You’re an inspiration Sir! I do have a question, is there no need for grout of any kind? I’ve laid tons of tile before becoming a fireman. Never in a pool though! Sorry for the dumb question.
I’m sorry but the section on grouting was left out. I don’t know why but yes it has to be grouted
@@roysouthby1 could you give me a idea how much something like this would cost it’s so nice great job Sir
How long did those tiles last? Are they still secure after a few freeze-thaw cycles?
Such a great video. Thank you. Quick question please. In your experience, If tiling over pebble creek surfaces, do you need to apply a primer and a waterproof coating before tiling? Many thanks
I'm about to do mine. Some people say just tile over it. Like here. Others says prime and waterproof 3 coats.
Sir: What brand or type of grout is to be applied in between the tiles.
Obviously, hands of steel and a titanium back on this guy.
Great video. How do I know when I have filled far enough down the wall and start on the floor?
Hi Shane you tile just past the cove You’ll find that as the pool gets deeper the rows of tiles get longer
Great video where can I find this tile stile thanks
Looks slippery. I'm about to remodel a pool now and it's used primary for volleyball and things like that I just don't think this would be appropriate because it's too slippery have any thoughts on that?
Don't you need to waterproof before tiling?
Roy, I am impressed. My grandfather was a Polish pool builder and built many of the pools in my neighborhood and, of course, I now have inherited one of the largest pool in my backyard. This pool is 20’ x 40’ and about 10’ deep hand dug and built in the early 50s in So. Cal. It’s solid but needs work. Do you think this DIY’er chick can tile the entire pool? I’ll need to pop out some old plaster that’s lifted but I’m guessing it’s all doable even for me! What do you think?
I’m sorry to tell you that it only does the floor but it does it very quickly
Thank you Roy, loved the videos, i only hopped you live in Adelaide Australia. would love for you team and yourself to tile our concrete pool.
Yep I live in Highbury
@@roysouthby1 Adelaide Highbury ?. honestly ?
@@stevelizlangwade5163 and the video was done in Athelston
@@roysouthby1 I just can't belivie this we live at Fairview park., i'm just draining our concrete pool as i contaminated the water, and only today water looking at the walls thinking should i have it tiled, as it's paint i think.. Hence the search on youtube... Do you still run your business ?, it would be just amazing if you could give me a quote etc.thanks again Steve
@@stevelizlangwade5163 yes My number is 0414999970 but I’m out at the moment so can you give me a ring tomorrow morning? Cheers Roy
Better if you do the repairs before cleaning the pool. You have to clean the grinder dust by cleaning the pool again.
Hi Roy. Great video. I have a question for you. I have a pool with a poured concrete box structure. I covered the inside with a rubber coating so that I was sure it was waterproof. On top of that I glue 60x90 cm natural slate tiles. After.a year or two we started getting problems with efflorescence and tiles coming loose so I am going to have to redo the whole thing.
1/ I only left the glue (Ardex tile glue) a week or two before I filled so perhaps the glue didn't have enough time to cure?
2/ I called Ardex and they said that the glue should be OK but I'm not so sure
3/ I grouted with Ardex grout (which is v hard) unlike the old glue which seems powdery. I didn't put enough expansion joints which pushed the loosish tiles to pop off
4/ I noted the glue you use you added some white liquid as you mixed it - what was that?
5/ I empty the pool during the winter but the efflorescence is almost impossible to remove so it builds up. Do you think it's coming from the glue or the underlying concrete?
What do you think?
Hi Kieth I’m afraid the problem you have is very common and it’s difficult to overcome. Google tells me that it’s caused by hard water but I don’t know. It seems like you’ve taken every precaution but still it happens. Once upon a time , let’s say 30 years ago the problem didn’t exist so , let’s look at how we tiled a pool back then.
I booked into a motel a while ago and it had a pool which, once seeing it, I realised that I did it 40 years ago. It was in perfect condition and no loose tiles and no cracks and no calcification whatsoever. The glue I used was Kemgrip Super the same as today but I didn’t add Kemcrete to it as you saw me do in my video. The grout I used was my own concoction of sand and cement. I used one part foundry sand ( brushing sand ) and six parts cement. It was a beautiful creamy grout and I only offered the customer 2 choices , grey or white If they chose white then I’d use pure white cement. Nowadays the grout we buy has got all sort of chemicals in it so , GO FIGURE
@@roysouthby1 Thanks for the reply, much appreciated. We have hard water here but that's not the problem. I've got the same tiles elsewhere which are not under water from the main supply, just rain water.
After thinking about it, I suspect that the cause is rain water running down behind the tiles before it gets below the pool water level - the majority of the deposits are on the wall that rises 1.5m above the water. I'm going to re-lay the tiles this spring and will direct rain water directly into the pool water. I'll also do some more research into glues and leave the glue and grout 6 weeks to cure.
Thanks again.
Love your video's. I have a project where i need to insatall water line over fiberglass pool. What do you recommend to glue porcelan or ceramic tile over the fiberglass pool. Thank you.
Because fibreglass is so flexible you can’t permanently glue tiles on it. I think that there are vinal
I meant vinyl tiles that would flex with the fibreglass but I suggest that you try googling it

Please can someone tells me the name of this tile, and where can I purchase it?
Do you need a general contractor licenses to do swimming pool tile ?
I'm thinking I want to use iridescent glass pool tiles. Would you recommend those or are the porcelain pool tiles preferred ?
Glass pool tiles are small and thin so the surface that your putting them on has to be perfectly even. Also they tend to chip when you cut them. I tend to steer away from glass and if I have to work with them my price is tripled
I have a question guys, what is the name of the cutting tile tool?
