- This summer my husband and I decided to retile and replaster our swimming pool ourselves. We got different quotes starting at $30,000 in our area. After a bit of research and finding more information about roll-on plaster we decided to do the job ourselves.
This is our DIY process.

Thanks for posting an interesting experience. I'm in the middle of my re- plaster and re-tile project. There are some significant differences though.
1. I removed the tile and the plaster. I got down to the concrete shell and addressed a few exposed rebar spots so as to not have any issues related to exposed rebar later.
2. I replaced the plaster with a pebble infused product in my case Stonescape. I've had it installed on my first pool and the upkeep and maintenance is minimal compared to plaster
3. I wanted a glass tile too, it looks killer, as does yours. My research led me back to porcelain tile because of the difficulty of glass tile adhering to to the pool over the long run. I have to believe you researched and came up with a bonding solution you have confidence in, congrats on your DIY it looks great.

Thank you for your tips. I have not heard much about porceline vs glass tile. We had porceline tile previously and it was falling all over. We installed glass tile with mesh backing this time. It works for us nicely and very low maintenance so far.

Nice video. Good Info. BTW, use a big plastic trash bag inside the 5-gallon pail to separate the plaster from the pail, so you don't need to have one pail for each bag of plaster.

I'm a contractor, Want to know if I can contact you about this install, I see you installed the coating over 4 days my guess is because of the large size involved. I would imagine the bottom of the pool was the hardest ? Did this all come out smooth ? my pools bottom is anything but flat its more like a mogul park for skiers. Did you have this issue ?

What product did you use as a DYI for the plaster?
did u guys made sure to knock every square inch of the plaster for hollow points? If you even missed one hollow point , everything u done would be undone over the years. Thats why some ppl just dont wanna gamble with just putting new plaster over existing old plaster. And that is why some contractors will just break it all da way down to the gunite or w.e its called. How is the pool holding now?
How much was it for just the plaster itself? Do you have to order it online only? I have to do the same project but previous owners had already put new tile only. That only leaves me with having to replaster the pool.
Question, I'm thinking about doing the same project to save $16k, Do I need to chip off all the old plaster on my pool?

What cost $7000? The tiles? Cause I had my pool resurfaced with new tile for not much more than that, and they stripped down to the bare concrete! I got bids from $4990 to $22,000, and the one I went with wasn't even the lowest bid. How many quotes did you get? I find prices vary wildly with contractors, and you don't necessarily get what you pay for either.
They knocked it out in less than a week 4-5 guys and they needed at most 4-5 hours on the longest day, most of that time was just letting stuff cure.
What part of the Country..? I'm in Norcal looking for a good crew to do our pool

How did you drain it without popping up
I think the patio is basically holding it down. I think the whole pool coming up is for older pools ( just my two cents )
You should not worry about pool popping up if you open hydrostatic valve (more than likely on the deep end of your pool). In our case, we did not have it at all so we did the entire job in summer - during dry season (when there was no rain). Another point to consider is to double check if your pool is located near large body of water (like lake) and it is at the same elevation with body of water, than you might be more concerned about the issue.
But don't show us step by step how you did it, or how much you ground out to fix the steps in some of the other divots that you had in the walls, did you go on an angle did you go to reverse mortise or did you just slap it on there, no telling us how you mixed it was it a 2:1 ratio 3:1 pretty useless video really
