I think the $50 quarterly is just so easy to redeem on airfare, no need of needing to really keep track of it, free money right there. The Resort Credit doubled so that more than offsets the fee and as for Priority Pass, bummer but the Platinum covers that for most people anyway, doesnt it?
Yeah, I’m not thrilled about the Aspire changes. That being said, I think I can max out that $400 resort credit in a year which will be big. Luckily Orlando has many Hilton “resorts”.
I have the Aspire. I will be able to use the $400 resort credit no problem the quarterly $50 airfare may be a challenge I will try the first quarter to add the $50 to my United mileage travel bank to see if I get the credit back. Wish me luck!
Resort credit is doable. The quarterly credit is a pain in the butt.
I actually prefer the new Hilton cards!
The annual fee increases are starting to wear on me. They can still be money maker cards, but I hate the quarterly credits or monthly credits with any card. Makes a multi card setup more and more complex.
My wife landed in Panama (no language barrier there) and asked the cab to take her to the JW Marriott; the fare was $22. They arrived, she paid, and the cab left. She realized she was at the W Hotel instead. Looking at the receipt, she found his phone number. He returned, and took her to the JW Marriott. The driver asked for more money saying it was her mistake, which, indeed it was not. They agreed a fare of $25 vs $30 he want it.
aspire change is still good. 400 in resort credit and easier way to use the airline fee while not stuck with 1 specific airline for the year, and 2nd hotel night at 30k is good too. still valuable card
for a 100 increase in AF.
Could be valuable. Just have to work harder to some sure it’s as much of a money maker as it was before.
I'm not trying to get the cops called on me in another country for $10, I would have just paid it and took the L
The cab story is why i wish uber was more widely used globally. Theres no real confusion about the dropoff point or haggling about the fare, even with language barriers. Its all shown upfront in the app.
It leaves no doubt.
I like the Hilton cards changes. I think both cards got better. Thanks for the information.
Definitely a case to be made for it. I’m just not a fan.
@@thebrandonboydshow with the Aspire you don’t even need the credits, use the free night, take advantage of Diamond benefits and the annual fee is $0 with one stay. With the Surpass now you hav an option to offset the annual fee without spending $15k and added a great multiplier. If someone doesn’t stay at a particular hotel at least twice they don’t need a mid tier of premium card hotel card. Thanks for the info!🫵
I would have just paid it. Being in a foreign country, a different language, maybe having a business card from the hotel would’ve helped. Show it, that’s where I want to go.
In a different country I’m probably paying it too. No need to risk it.
Nice that I got that video recommended, instant sub!
Awesome. Lots more weekly content coming soon. Thanks for hopping on board!
I may be in the minority but I think the Aspire changes are a net positive. Yes, it requires a little more work to maximize the benefits of the card, but it could have been far worse. I don't think dropping priority pass is a big deal as it's probably a redundant benefit for the majority of card holders. Considering the uncapped free night certificate and credits, this is still one of the best premium cards in the market.
For $10, and in a foreign country with a different language, I would have just paid it and been done with the whole situation. It’s not worth risking going to jail or worse, over an amount that small. I always make it a point to get a few business cards from
the hotel, with the address and such in the local script, just for this reason.
100%
I was thinking of getting the Aspire card and I appreciate your updates to the card. Would you consider keeping it long term?
I’ll probably still keep it. Just more difficult to use the credits.
@@thebrandonboydshow Brandon, thank you for your quick response! The credits do seem to be a bit more of a pain to use. I don’t like having to keep track of these things! Lol
I disagree completely on your Hilton stance. If you stay at Hilton often I think the changes are great. Also as someone that travels frequently for work I would much rather have the airfare credit instead of the incidental credit. Would be nice to use it all at once but since I do fly about once a month I can use the credit pretty easily. I don’t really care about priority pass as I have that on multiple other cards. I think Amex is making changes that make the cards better for their intended audience but not for those that want to not use the card and get the free night award.
Great perspective. Will be great for some and not for others. I just hate increased fees and quarterly/monthly credits. Make things more difficult to track and use. Maybe the fact that we have 20-30 cards or more has something to do with it.
@@thebrandonboydshow yes. I think that is the point. They want to be primary in your wallet not 1 of 20. I have 10-15 hotel stays for work per year and happily use the aspire for my Hilton purchases. I also won’t mind using it once per quarter for an airline ticket. I actually want to trim down my wallet and focus on fewer cards. To be clear I don’t like the increased fees either but for me they are adding way more than an additional $100 in value
Agreed here. While not all great changes, calling the cards ruined is a bit overblown. If you stay at Hilton resorts once or twice a year, the Aspire can still give some great value.
Watching your updates each week is becoming a habit for me. Thanks for making them.
Sounds like a great routine!
If you can travel, you can afford $10. These are just the L’s you take sometimes. Happens to most of us.
Actually came out to be overpaying $5 after the ruckus. She should then ask herself would she pay $5 to avoid that. Like paying a better taxi to not have this situation.
Yep. Chalk it up to experience and move on.
Personal opinion but I don’t think the Surpass changes are that bad as long as you stay at any Hilton at least twice a year you can use the $50 credit (so $100 in total) and the food and beverage credit which offsets the $150 fee plus you are essentially at 30x points earnings. On the Aspire the quarterly airline credits are harder for me to use even with the airlines being open, I was told this is for airline ticket purchases and not what codes as incidentals so it sounds like the United Travel bank work around will no longer apply and while the resort credit is more at $400 I was told it no longer applies to the room rate and with also being split to $200 twice a year is almost unusable for my use case as I don’t spend $400 a year at Hilton bars and restaurants but I guess they are not targeting me 😂
Great perspective. A good case to be made for it benefiting some people. I just don’t like the increased fee and the additional complexity of using the credits.
I have the surpass for a few years. And I can say this is a slight upgrade/downgrade. Staying two nights a year at different times would bring down the AF down to $50 compared to just paying $95 and getting nothing back. Yes, you pay more upfront, but be ahead later.
Amex giveth and taketh away.
Disappointed with the Aspire changes as I was already able to use the “flight incidental credit” for airfare by booking cheap flights on southwest and not sure I’ll be staying at a “qualifying resort” more than once a year. With that said, depending on where you stay the free night reward and diamond status honestly still make up for the AF by themselves
Only a $10 difference? When in a foreign country I’d just pay it without thinking unless it was a crazy amount. See Seems like a huge waste of time escalating the issue to involve the police. Also for Amex the change of increasing annual fees and making cards more of a coupon book isn’t a change I like. Granted if you are a frequent traveler these changes are for the better but as an occasional traveler these changes are horrible. What is interesting is the Hilton business card hasn’t changed at all and still has the 10 priority passes.
This attitude is what taxi driver get advantage of us.
Maybe.
Good point. I wouldn’t risk having police form another country take my word over a local taxi cab driver. A little risky when considering the amount in dispute.
@thebrandonboydshow yup 5 to 10 extra per ppl . Good gig. Plus tip we western tip for everything
New Aspire benefits and annual fee aren't bad, can still get value from the card
Just feel like Amex is piling it on heavy as the year winds down. Makes me wonder what’s next
On the Aspire the airline credit should also be annual or semi annual. I wonder if that credit can be used to buy airline gift cards 🤔
Airline credit should of been Semi annual.
The cab driver was 100% wrong. She should not pay for someone's mistakes. I had a situation like this in LA when the driver took me to the wrong location, when I told him many times that google map shows a different route and he took me to the wrong location anyway. I paid only what I was supposed to pay. Not my fault if the guy has no idea and not professional.
Can’t argue with that. You pay for the ride you requested. Not the one the driver took you on. Thanks for sharing this.
I actually don't mind the changes to the AMEX Hilton Surpass or Aspire CCs. They're reasonable and it's still pretty easy to get value from them. Priority Pass doesn't really matter to me as I have that perk from plenty of other CCs but I can see how that would be a huge negative to other people. Thanks for the info + video!
Depends on your situation. Some will love it. I’m not a big fan.
I don't like the coupon book Amex way. I hate it. I forget to use some credit in certain months and it drives me nuts. At this point, it's not even about the credit but about me beating their wishful thinking that betting that we will forget to use on certain months. LOL
But, I think of it this way. I will still pay $550 for Aspire even if it only comes with a Free night and Diamond status, and nothing else to offset. To me, it's not hard to get more value than $550 from a free night. So I'm already winning.
Therefore, Extra $400 resort credit and $200 airline credit is sort of like a free gift!!!
Awesome video Brandon.
Just take Uber bih
Exactly.
Got to stand your ground lol. I think each side of the cab fair blew the issue out of purpotion . Ultimately my opinion is: doing that internationally is ballsy but you have to put your foot down and not get run over if you travel often... If your young age (college traveler) and every dollar matters I understand. If you have experience and travel a lot just learn to put in a line item on the budget for travel fare negotiations and mistakes that happen along the way. Taxi drivers well known for extorting foreigners, unless you are familiar with the area better to be happy to get to you hotel destination
It’s a bold move to do it out of the country. And with the amount in USD I would have just let it go.
If she were wise, she would have paid/
