Joke or not, it’s a boundary issue to say something like that to a kid about their parent.
Agreed. Makes everything awkward at the very least. I couldn’t imagine making that kind of joke about family.
Whenever you are invited to a family gathering you have to be aware that you are a guest and be on your best behavior. That means turning the other cheek and not letting things get under your skin. You are always in control of your emotions, don’t allow your in laws to play puppet master. If you can’t stand the heat than don’t go into the kitchen.
Great advice. Don’t let anyone else control how you act and feel.

Probably not a matter of if, but when.
which is why I somewhat consider this a blessing to deter me from getting it plus having to deal with the coupons every month vs pursuing a different product. But love that getting additional Amex cards was pretty straight forward including no hard pulls on more cards after in the ecosystem

I am curious about all of these Amex changes. They haven’t affected me yet personally because I have had the gold and platinum for a while and already have the BBP. However, I am curious of why they are making the changes. Perhaps, they just want to decrease risk by decreasing the number of customers?
I think the lady should go on the cruise.
Her kids would have fun and hopefully she could repair the relationship with the mother in law. Unless she really does get thrown overboard 😮
Seems like a way to limit the amount of sign up offers. Simple as that. Less membership rewards that can be redeemed. Let’s hope the mom doesn’t go overboard!
Not a fan of all these AMEX changes. Starting to look at other setups to maximize the dining & grocery categories as I have a feeling that the personal Gold is next on the increase AF & reduce benefits list. Thanks for the info + video!
I got the Platinum first because it aligned best to my spring summer spending and already had grocery covered this year. Wanted the Gold in January 2024. Radically different cards with zero cross over of categories. Why am I punished for having their top tier card? They are going to lose so much business as I will take that spend elsewhere. I already contacted customer service and complained and hope a lot of others do too
Cancel the trip and if the tickets are non-refundable. Oh well, you won't get to see your grand kids on vacation. Heck won't see me at family gathering that involve the MIL.
I think the American Express Business Gold card got worse with the increased annual fee and the coupon book that comes with it. It was a better card earning 4x points on your categories of choice. Didnt that card get an annual fee raise pretty recently before going up to $375?
There were rumors of an increase but nothing confirmed. Going from $295 to $375 in one jump. I’m not a fan.
I would not go on that cruise and book another trip with the kids and leave that step mother at home! 😅

Talking the way to a child about their mother is completely inappropriate, and almost unforgivable. Not only would I not go on the cruise, but I would never let the mother-in-law be alone with the children anymore as she clearly can’t be trusted and has very poor judgement.
Makes you wonder what she would say next time.
Saying I was just joking is just the real life equivalent saying lol at the end of a mean text. It doesn’t make what they said any less terrible. Especially when they said it out of nowhere. And to a child about their parent.
It's disappointing AMEX is doing this. I suspect to maximize their profits. As I have the CS Plat and consumer gold it really doesn't bother me. Additionally I've had the Delta Gold (upgraded to Plat) so received those bonuses albeit reduced with the upgrade. I'm also not interested in the cash back cards. I think mom and family should go on the cruise and strive to enjoy themselves. Why deny the kids from such an enjoyable experience? She can always reduce significantly her interactions with mother in law later if her inappropriateness continues.
I’m disappointed in the changes as well. Don’t like where this is trending at all. Overall, very discouraging news.
I agree with Amex changes as people was opening and closing cards for bonus as well as having over 4 Amex cards personal and biz cards
I had a couple myself at one point. Great observation.
still have to keep it for a year, hit the minimum spend, and pay annual fee to get the bonus...so they already have things in place to deter behavior. plus have once in a lifetime language already so not like you can get these bonuses, cancel and get again like in other ecosystems.
I’m afraid to apply for the aviator, having this card now (got it about 3 or 4yrs ago). Not a fan of all these Amex changes, but doesn’t affect me personally. The joke is of bad taste, she can stay home and let everyone go. I would go, just to allow events to settle things, I.e. get an apology, amend things, or confirm the fact that the relationship isn’t reparable. The reason the mother in law doesn’t like her, could be some minuscule thing, who knows
If your Membership Reward points from Gold is transferable to Platinum then i think it's reasonable they consider them in the same family....IMHO
but you can pool points across personal, business, credit cards and charge cards...so guess that means all in the same family?
Chase doesn't do this, not C1 or Citi. Seems unreasoanble and another way for the coupon book maker to milk their customers.

Let's be real. It wasn't a joke. What I wish was a joke is this Amex extended family stuff... so depressing as I don't yet have any Amex cards.
Back to the family matter... I am just happy I get a long with ny mother-in-law. So much so that I bought her a plane ticket to come visit us for 3 weeks. Yes she stays with us while she visits. 😊
That is not ok. Mother in law is 100% at fault. If she chooses to go she may be doing it for the kids. But if she say no that should be respected
