i really like how u always show how it performs during the rain
This is continuity and passion 💯
That's what made me subscribe... it's like the conclusion to a story.
Thank you! It's my favorite part!
It’s like watching a steak video and they fail to slice it at the end
So nice to see houses with actual yards, instead of postage stamps crammed together like most suburban areas nowadays.
That house has a beautiful yard for sure!
All my gutters go into a massive underground tank that waters the yard and gardens. Most of my rental properties have drains daylighting under the front sidewalk and coming out via the front curb. This way it goes right into the storm drains instead of channeling int a swale or a yard channel. All that work to see a nice small flow out the front end of the yard...So worth it!!
I’m just jealous that these homeowners get these incredible videos explaining exactly what you are doing and why you are doing it. I recently had siding and a roof put on and I hated how out of the loop I was on everything. They tried to skip house wrap but because I came home early I was able to put a stop to the work until they got the correct materials
Yikes and yikes! I always prefer the homeowner is around during the install. I encourage them to come out and see the work we are doing (some worry that they are hanging over our shoulders) because they get to see the struggle and see we get it correct. The only time someone doesn't want you hanging over their shoulder is if they are doing crappy work.
What, not using housewrap? They should be fired on the spot for skipping such an important step. What next, not using the correct nailing patterns? Whatever happened to pride in workmanship.
That’s a beautiful old neighborhood!!! Big yards, trees and quiet!!!
Yes it's a beautiful area.
Getting the video of it working in the rain is important to us getting the whole story. It's great that you do that. Me Watching from central mass.
Thank you! I agree about the after-footage. Very much worth it.
This video had everything: A beautiful yard, channel drain installed, augering, and rain footage. Im glad you went out of the service area for this drainage video.
Almost forgot to like 👍had to come back.
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed the video, OEE. - Shawn
That's a customer who knows it going to be done right and it was well worth it!
This was a great customer to work with!
Greetings Sean/Shawn from a recently self-employed handyman viewer in Germany. You are a role-model in many respects! Thanks. Thomas. Thank you for sharing your experience and knowledge! Appreciatia!
Thank you Thomas! Thanks for watching and commenting! - Shawn
@@GCFD Shawn, thanks, just for the sake of "unnecessary knowledge": English "fall" is "Gefälle" in German. I love how you can see the connection between our languages in these two words. 😍
My favourite youtuber is back again!!
Yup
👍 I have a bunch of videos that are waiting on rain for the after footage.
@@GCFD The rain footage is so clutch. It really is a treat to see them in action. Great work!
Another great job Shawn. The homeowner can really enjoy his home more now. Have a great day.
Thank you! 👍
That is a beautiful yard! The addition of your services is going to make a big impact!!
👍
Shawn, you and your crew do outstanding work. All that in one day, What? Are you kidding me? Wow! Great same day job!!!
Yes it was a long day but having the right equipment makes all the difference!
Another great video, what I love is u actually show water flow after project complete! Keep up the good work
Thank you!
Sorry, late to the game with your channel but am watching all your videos. I love watching problems get solved and I also enjoy that you and your crew take pride in your work. You have some excellent workers who do great work. It's not easy work for sure. I like the music choices, time lapse, how the camera pans around and such. And like other posters said it's fun to see the end result during the rain. Wish more contractors were like you and your crew. Very hard to find people such as yourselves who do quality work.
Thank you Stainer! You'll have to forgive my early videos as they were not as good as my latest content. - Shawn
Another great job by Shawn and his Boyz.
Thank you Jim!
You did all this work in one day, that's awesome!
👍 It was a heck of a day for sure. Shoutouts to Ronald and Jeremy!
Great job as always Shawn. I know that customer is gonna be happy with the results.
👍
HA!! I don't remember seeing the mini ditch digger! Cool! Beautiful neighborhood too! 💕👍😁😷
I haven't used it on too many jobs. It has a place and is a super time saver. I took footage and thought about a "buying a mini trencher video" but wasn't sure there was any interest...
Job well done, happy customer & neighbors too.
👍
Great work. It's fun to watch professionals that care.
Thank you Greg!
That I reckon is your best video that’s been posted. Professionally and entertaining. Keep them coming...from the UK.🇬🇧
Wow thank you Brian! I have been trying to make better quality stuff since my channel has grown in popularity. - Shawn
Love the trees in that guys yard.
Same. I tried to showcase the yard at the end of the video. Beautiful neighborhood!
That’s another great 👍 job done by you and your crew Shawn .
Thank you Jack!
Great job Shawn. That should solve their problems. Thanks for the video.
Thank you Abe!
Shawn, I'm a huge fan and look forward to future videos!
Thank you Lee! I have a bunch more that are waiting for rain footage!
Another job well done by Gates City foundation drain. 👍
👍
Hard to beat Quality professional work
👍
Good clean out with the channel drain .
👍
Hey. I have been away, but have not forgotten ya. Glad to see the channel growing. Lucky me. I get to watch all the videos I missed.
Hey welcome back! I did notice you weren't watching/commenting for awhile there.
Very enjoyable video with some hi Iq solutions to solve drainage problems !
Working smarter rather than harder by bringing the excavator! Another great job by you and your crew!
Thank you Steve!
Amazing attention to detail as always.
thank you!
Well done! In places where the pipe is visible, you can paint it so that it blends into the background.
Yes my customers often do that. Plus it helps protect the pipe from UV.
Great video. Wish you were in my area.
Great job again Shawn and Gate City guys. when you were walking through the job at the beginning I was hoping that you had an auger to go under the sidewalk and you did! 👍
The endings of your videos are so fulfilling when you show your hard work paid off with the working results during a rainstorm.
Keep it up, waiting for more videos!
Yes.... Pipe prices are CRAZY... I heard that is the result of the freeze in Texas about a month ago. Polymer freeze, resin freeze blah blah. Some part of the process or needed materials did not stand up to the extreme cold.
Thank you Ed! I got the pencil vib and am waiting for a concrete channel drain job to show it off and mention you! I have a bunch more videos that are waiting for rain footage....
@@GCFD I just like to see jobs go smooth. If we could only learn all the tricks early on in our careers 🤔...
Lol
Great video! Very cool! THANK YOU!
beautiful job
👍
a very good explanation with details
Good job as always true professionals, shout outs to the rest of crew God bless you.
Thank you as Always Anthony!
Cool to see that you got a great team helping you! They know exactly what to do and even put up with your youtube hobby :-)
Yes! It is quite a change of mindset when the job comes to a screeching halt because I'm fiddling with the camera.
@@GCFD Well I'm very happy about it. Because your all very thorough and show it all. I stay for the end result! Don't give that up! That makes it so satisfying!
Love your work and your videos
Thank you! - Shawn
Great job! Those pipes should shed all the water!
👍
from the Netherlands thanks for the video Shaun
👍 Thank you!
Such nice work. Top notch.
Thank you!
Another great video and I really LIKE that you show how your work performs!!! Apple Drains needs to show theirs as well which they have started to do.
On a funny note, y’all killed that pizza!! Lol!!
👍 It's my favorite part seeing the system working. I have a ton of videos waiting right now on rain footage, so it is a pain to catch it during the rain.
@@GCFD all good! Keep up the great work (Sean?) and team!!
That auger would have been awesome when I was running cable and fiber!
We have a smaller one for small stuff but works the same. It's a huge labor saver!
Mini excavators are the bees knees when it comes to tight spots and roots and they can be towed by a regular vehicle in most cases.
Great video once again and I’m happy to wait longer for content to get those shots of the system working during rain!
It kills me to have great content being held up by rain footage. But I do think it's worth it in the end. 👍
Nice work. Every time I install channel drain I use the knockouts in the bottom of the channel. Otherwise your discharge pipe is barely below ground if not right at grade. But that’s just me. I like how you do your outfalls. Most people try to conceal them and it affects their system
If we have the fall, we love going out of the bottom of the channel. In this case we didn't have the fall to come out of the bottom.
we are factory of drain channel in china ,do you need buy ?
Another great video.
👍
That was so satisfying to watch.
Thank you! This was a tough job but I am very happy with the video!
Video was great. Every detail right down to the cleanup and re-seeding 👍
Flawless work
Thank you Matt! Thanks for the support! - Shawn
Love these videos. Just one tip, when you’re recording your piece to camera, hold the camera much higher up, your face will be lit much better (not against background of sky) and it’ll look a load more natural.
But always love the time lapses and the updates when it’s raining! Great work!
Great tip! I usually try to face the Sun too.

Love watching and learning from your videos. Didn’t see a price for a job like this? My job would probably be a little smaller than this but would involved cutting some concrete to insert channel drain. What’s the cost for something like that about that size
With a system like this, and especially one as long, do you ever have problems with freeze/thaw cycles causing the pipes to be blocked with ice? Or have other issues with blockages such as leaves, rodents crawling up end and dying, etc?
We don't have freeze thaw stuff here in NC. The pipes flow so well during a heavy rain that they blow out any debris that was in there. You'll often see a pile of leaves and debris at my outfalls.
Great job! What’s the procedure for making sure the pipes have enough slope as they head toward the street?
You're looking for a quarter of a bubble on the level or better falling.
Great vid super detailed. Did u poor any concrete u der that channel drain? If not what stops the drain from either dropping down or moving? I’m about to start installing at home. Australian weather it’s crazy down here at the moment.
do you need buy channel ?we are factory
Great 👍 job well done
Thank you!
I'm curious as to why you lay the hay on after. Does it prevent Soil run off when it rains ?
There is a lot of houses built below ground level in your state . Pity they havn't got Council Planning regs to build a higher foundation in the beginning
Yep! You're seeing the worst of them on my channel too...
Finally, a real solution for drainage besides corrugated pipe !!
How can contact you ?
👍
I love your videos!
Thank you Steve! thanks for watching and commenting! - Shawn
That is another awesome video ! 2 questions here : 1. what is the maximum water the main pipe can handle ? you have 4 downsprout + 1 channel drain water in this video. 2. How do you measure slope from the house to the curb ? that is very long run. Do you use wooden stakes ?
I'm not sure what the slope was so can't tell you the max water the pipe can handle. This 4" is overkill but that's how I like it. I don't measure the slope in a long run like that because I don't need to. As long as the pipe is falling with the grade, I'm good. Great comment!
Great video. What happens if the drain gets blocked and backs up? Would this cause any roof issues? Is there a pump to prevent backflow? I am having issues with drainage right now and looking at my options.
You need to keep the channel clean but the smooth pipes keep themselves clean.
Great job as always Shawn and crew. One question: have you ever been asked to install a system for catching and storing rainwater? Perhaps rain barrels or a cistern fed by downspouts? Would you install such a system, and if so, do you have any recommendations for systems?
I haven't been asked to do that yet. Most of my customers are desperate to get rid of the water.
Hello
In the UK we have Rain Water Harvesting systems to collect and store water underground.
Basically excavate a hole about the size of a car or two. Install a tank or fill hole with gravel or special blocks (they look a bit like milk crates), then cover over and install a manhole for access and to install a sump pump. The water can be used to irrigate the garden, fill toilet cisterns inside the home (with dedicated pipework) or use for whatever does not require clean mains water supply.
I’d like to install a channel drain against our new patio but does it have to be cast in concrete? It will be concrete patio in one side and the lawn on the opposite. I actually thought about running tapcons into the patio from inside the channel drain to keep it in place. Just in case. Wish I could find a radius channel too.
hi ,i am factory of drain channel in china ,do you need buy ?
Hi, commenting from the UK, why do you cover the filled in trenches with hay?
When u have a channel drain with dirt surrounding it, it’s supposed to be sloped towards the drain correct? I don’t understand how with time it won’t just keep filling with dirt even though u tamped the soil? Won’t it clog the whole system after a few years??
In my area of WA state's North Olympic Peninsula drainage onto the street is a no-no. Though the drainage pipes do not actually egress over the curb any substantial rain will create a bog at the property edge and maybe undermine the paved road. Rain gardens have become the thing here as a catchment. Like any landscaping element the rain garden will need to be maintained and seasonally groomed. Is the channel silt screen adequate for the long haul?
The channel may need to be cleaned out while the disturbed soil heals. After that it should flow pretty well but may need to be cleaned out and maintained.
That auger is the bees knees.
I agree! It was very expensive but it's a lifesaver in these cases. 👍
That ground auger is interesting. I can see the value in that. I've tunneled under a few sidewalks w/ a sledge hammer and a pressure washer - messy, involved project. For others watching this, be conscious of where your air inlets for the drill motor are while working - don't want to suck dirt through the motor.
That looks like a lot of roof area dumping into a single 4" pipe to my untrained eye. Do you have a formula or chart for the maximum amount of roof area to each pipe size?
Thanks for another good video.
I don't have a formula but it depends on how much fall you have. I have taken the 4" into 6" with areas with little fall. In areas like this with a steep downgrade I don't worry too much.
Wow, $1100 for the straight pipe alone not to mention the fittings. It will pay off when the foundation doesn't settle and crack. Nice work.
👍
I hope this works. My experience with underground pipes hasn't been good because of yard debris blocking places that are hard to clean out.
Were you using schedule 40 with at least a quarter bubble of fall? My experience has been that there is nothing to hold debris back and the next heavy rain produces enough head to blow out any debris in there.
Hell yeah another video
Thank you! I have so many more waiting on rain!
Good job guys. I guess I would have wanted to preserve my grass though. I have seen it done by taking the plugs out, then replacing when done.
👍
I was wondering, do you ever capture the discharge from the air conditioning condenser? They really spit out a lot of water during the summer from the humidity. Just saw the unit and had the wild thought. Another great video! On a much smaller scale I used your content to divert one of my gutters. About twenty feet of work but it is running great. I had a full bubble the whole way.
We often do catch the condenser lines. I carry the fittings with me at all times.
Do you put the rocks under the exit of the pipe to stop orrosion?
Shaun, for the time lapse parts, how do you get the camera to pan around slowly? Do you have a geared camera mount, or do you add the pan later when editing the video?
Some gimbals for phones or action cams have a rotating timelapse function. You can also get what are caller egg timer / rotating panning head mounts to do exactly that.
Like Alex said, I use a rotating panning head

8:30 Doesn't your chain trencher chop through roots or are those roots just too big to cut?
It will go through small roots but the larger ones it can't touch. The ex goes right through most roots towards the tree's drip line.
Looks like an older Charlotte neighborhood? Do you think one 4” per side is enough for all the downspouts? Not a critique, just a question?
The capacity of the pipe really depends on how much fall it has. In this case we had a huge amount of fall to the street so we knew the pipes would gush.
Please post (affiliate) link to auger. That is awesome. Also, do you do work in Raleigh NC?

That auger bit is incredible, never seen anything like that before. Huge timesaver. Did you just get that?
I have had it for a few jobs. We did one core under a tiny sidewalk and I researched and found the auger. It's a huge time saver, like you said!!
@@GCFD Get a few more auger segments and you could then go straight across driveways/patios without needing to cut & patch them...
The property looks pretty flat. Didn’t hear any mention of fall challenges as in most GCFD videos. Way to be prepared with equipment Shawn. 👍
are these illegal to install in a garage entrance? I've been looking at building a garage, and use this style drain catch for the garage entrance (ice/snow melt collection, as well as cleanout of the garage sweep, and spray out an epoxied floor.
We install channel drains in front of garages. No problem.
Does the straw help the grass grow better or just hold the seed and dirt down?
It protects the bare soil and the seed.
What kind of tape did you use to cover the drain while you packed dirt around it?
We use duct tape mostly.
I'm just curious as to why you don't use those downspout caps on the end of the pipe where the downspout goes into the PVC? I'm talking about those one's that are shaped for the downspout to go into the PVC. I bet other customers might want you to do work now out their.
I find those adapters clogged too many times. I don't like how they seal the system because I may need to access for cleaning out.
Curious to know what material the channel drain and grates is and where do you purchase it from?
hi we are china drain channel factory ,do you need ?
Would love to see footage of the channel drain in action. ☹️
Yea I agree. But he said he just stopped by the outfalls for the footage. Check my other channel drain videos for that footage (:
This was nice!!! How much estimate would something like this cost? I am sure we are not in the same state by just wondering 💭 ballpark would be nice 👍🏾 😊
do you need buy drain channel?we are factory
What is that “mini jumping jack” that you used to compact the channel drain? And where do the sell them? Thanks
hi ,we are drain channel factory in china ,do you need buy ?
hes happy you didnt find the body!
Haha
Would you ever “double-up” and put two channel drains side by side for heavier flow areas? Also would you ever reuse that plastic edging for a small “backstop” with an inch or two height showing on the patio side to stop extremely heavy rains?
I haven't thought about two channel drains. The limiting factor is the discharge pipe, so we always try to leave with a full bubble.
Was there any specific reason to not have a single runout? From the video the lower spot is on the second run (the one away from the mailbox), so i can think of tying from the augered area to that branch, and then avoiding the long run that goes parallel to the driveway.
I usually like the straightest path with the most fall for my outfall. We would have had to use up some of our fall to connect to a single run and I don't like doing that. I go for results over all else.
we are factory of drain channel in china ,do you need buy?
Great job! How long did it take to finish?
With the three of us and all the right equipment we finished this in one long day.
@@GCFD that’s great. Your channel has become one of my favorite together with Mike Haddock and a couple of bricklayers from the UK
How much does that petrol powered jackhammer weigh? The one you use to compact the soil with
It doesn't weigh much. It's so much lighter than an electric hammer.
High quality work! Anyone know of someone doing this in central Texas?
👍
Where can I get one of those little gas tampers you use around the trench drain?
The link is in the description. They are extremely cheap and don't last. But they are major labor savers.
I don’t see clean-outs. Do you install them? How closely?
There is enough room between the downspout and coupler to fit my jetter hose so we usually don't do them. If the customer asks for them or we have less than a full bubble of fall, we will install them.
professional..
