Lance and crew, welcome to the world of World class triathletes! They’ve been on shorter cranks for 7 years or so (at least) ! Maybe some folks need to learn to stay clean. Floyd was on some potent dope, and was crying about not being able to breathe the moment the police started interacting. Now, the policeman shouldn’t have put a knee on him, but the primary causes of Floyd’s death was dope and stupidity. The cop, maybe 10%. I’m really surprised that Johan doesn’t know why short cranks are used for time trialing. It opens up the hip angle when in an aggressive aero position which enables the rider to apply power sooner and more effectively in the pedal stroke. They’re also useful for short riders for the same reason and to optimize their bike fit.

About the 165mm makes sense though. As riders use higher cadence, lever doesn't matter much, especially for climbs. And shorter cranks make positioning the saddle and handlebars much easier, as the top of the stroke, the knee angle isn't as overextended - maybe more power is possible too that way. Most important change I will make with my next bike.

25:00 Shorter cranks are sometimes so that the hip angle is less on the up stroke and allows for a lower torso because the thigh does not hit the stomach. More level back and therefore lower and more aero position. Leverage is not a factor, as studies have shown. You just change to an easier gear and the leverage is equal to a longer crank. If having a larger crank gave more leverage and some kind of advantage, we would all be riding super long cranks. In fact, it just does really not matter much with the studies that have been done, so why not get the aero advantages.

The growth of cycling over the past 20 years is phenomenal. But, there ars issues. Riders getting stronger, bikes getting faster, more riders competing for top 5 finishes. More desperation means taking more risks. Open road racing may be fundamentally changed in the next few years.
This is comparable to sportscar racing in the 50s. New tech from WW2 made the cars much faster and reliable. One can watch Brian Redman prerunning the millemiglia in 1955. It's nuts. This led to the ban on open road sports car racing.

The short cranks are a bike fit / comfort thing. It allows you to open the hip angle at the top of the stroke. Also, 165 is short but it's not uncommon to see 160 or 155s as well. All the studies have shown that it has no effect on power production except in the cases where they solve a fit issue such as a too closed hip angle. This mostly only applies to time trialing. I don't think there's anything to be gained for a normal road position.

Fulgsangs Giro / OL, WC, Classics campaign was planned before xmas when he extended his contract. TDF has been brutal to him despite he has been up there in Dauphine/TDS every year since his neo pro debut in 2009. TDF is probably in his head. His refocus on one day races and hilly 1 week stage races since the 2016 olympics has shown that grand tour GC is not his main competence and the expectations for him to succeed in the TDF is just too big.
Original plan after Ruta del sol was:
    Strade Bianche (main goal)
    Tirreno
    Amstel
    Fleche
    Liege (main Goal)
Giro GC (because Vino insists and has had a manncrush on Fuglsang since the first contract and used to threaten Nibali with Fuglsang every time he underperformed - it worked)
TDF in semi-support for Lopez / OL training & early abandonment.
    Olympics (main goal)
    Poland
    Worlds (main goal)
    Torino
    Emilia
    Lombardia (main Goal).
Basically plan was a shift towards 1 day races and to ride every stage race day as a 1-day race for the win which is about time.
I hope he will be allowed to race Roubaix and Flanders before he retires - he has all the tools needed to win them and he has finally figured out that he will never ever win a 2 man sprint.
Remember Roubaix stage 2014 where he dragged Nibali to the line and set him up for the GC win instead of riding for the stage win with Boom - and he still came in 2nd minutes before Sagan, Cancellara etc?

If Lance could stop formulating incoherent half sentences, that would be great. "The Tour of Lombardia, the Giro di Lombardia, 143 miles, 231 kilometers, in the northern part of, BY THE WAY THAT IS, the the northern part of Italy is is Lombardia, that's the region, I am joined as always by ... and I watched the show last week..blabla top left " Come on man.

    Fuglsang pronunciation tip:
The g is silent, should sound more like "Foolsang". And the "a" is an open a, close to an "ar" sound. Try with "Foolsarng"

Lance, you left the issue hang, after you made the point that one bad policeman doesn’t mean all are bad.
So am I to assume Mellow Johnny’s went ahead to fulfill the police contract? If not, after the transparent discussion, why not? And you know that if you let the shop employees make the decision and that decision stands, then you clearly are making a political statement which in my opinion is the wrong one, which will have a negative effect on Austin and your viewership. You need to get this right.
