This is the last piece my band director is going to conduct at my school before he leaves. It makes me sad every time I listen to this piece because the piece was written about a boy who’s going off to war, maybe to never see his family again. The parallels between the two situations that were faced make this a rightful last piece for my director.
The intonation is just stunning and one of the best parts about the President’s Own. Just perfectly in tune. When it locks, the overtones just make you cry.
The solo clarinet entrance at 2:38 is brutal to pull off to perfection and in tune. Obviously it was nailed here. This performance was utter perfection. If it doesn't move you, you're dead.
1:40 is officially one of my favorite chords I’ve ever heard played by any ensemble. When the bass note drops through the floor and the French Horns just sing above the rest of the Band. I could seriously listen to just that chord all day.
Oh Danny boy the pipes the pipes are calling From glen to glen and down the mountain side The summer's gone and all the flowers dying 'Tis you 'tis you must go and I must bide But come ye back when summer's in the meadow Or when the valley's hushed and white with snow 'Tis I'll be here in sunshine or in shadow Oh Danny boy oh Danny boy I love you so But when ye come and all the roses falling And I am dead as dead I well may be Go out and find the place where I am lying And kneel and say an ave there for me And I will hear tho' soft you tread above me And then my grave will warm and sweeter be For you shall bend and tell me that you love me And I will sleep in peace until you come to me Remember 1916. Never forget that Easter Week.
I had the privilege to conduct this piece at a Veteran's Day memorial the year i graduated from HS. This piece will always have a place in my heart. Its gonna be the first piece I do when I become a music teacher.
Amazing. This is the best recording /performance of this that I've ever heard. The balance is unbelievable. The trumpet part is brutal on the chops. Difficult piece despite half notes and quarter notes.
I had the pleasure of attending this concert, and hearing Irish Tune live in Orchestra Hall was absolutely breathtaking. There will never be a better performance. I'm so glad I stumbled upon this, I was unaware it was being recorded.
I love the Euphonioum part such beautiful tone and phrasing, I once had this talent and let it all go. Just wished I believed in myself more, I could be sat in the exact same place these musicians are but as a British Army Bandsman much love xx
It just doesn't get any better than this. I already have a huge soft spot for this piece; it was the first work I ever conducted, so it carries a great deal of emotional meaning for me - and to hear it played with this level of balance, intonation, phrasing, dynamic control and feeling had me in tears all over again. Thank you, Capt. (now Major) Ryan Nowlin and the USMB.
From a musical standpoint...the tempi are absolutely spot on. There is a 'sweet spot' for Irish Tune where the music actually 'sings'....here it is...the Golden Section...
The hair stood up on the back of my neck when the French Horns came in during the middle section, then all the hairs on the body stood up when the band came in after that. Dedicate this to the memory of my late brother Dan, 1958-2020
Everyone is being very appreciative and serious here so I'll start by saying that this is a beautiful arrangement and performance of a classic well-loved piece, and I especially love the Euphoniums in this. That being said, I thought it hilarious at 3:40 that homeboys oboe and mr. timpani are just sitting there during the climax with nothing to do.
The only part of the whole piece is the cymbal roll. Us percussionists often have long breaks doing nothing but counting bars. Seems almost wrong in a [aid gig you receive the same $$ as the strings & woodwind which are playing most of the time.
I really want to know who are the 24 people who disliked this. I really hope they are not music educators because if so they should not have a degree in music ed. All 3 T's (Time, Tone, Technique) are unbelievable in this recording there is nothing else that could be wrong unless you disliked the balance of the trumpet section. And even still this is the best band in all of the United States.
Played this in my High School honor band forever ago and hearing this just overwhelmed me with emotion and nostalgia. I'll always be in awe of how music has the power to evoke such emotions and connect people over spans of years
I have to play this piece tomorrow....for entrance in a college band ....I'll be playing the baritone (euphonium) it will be completely on my own...no others involved.....
How’s it go? I played this on euphonium in my junior year of high school in the Kauffman last year, it was so hard to get it just right but was so satisfying after the countless hours put into it
This song is very great. We practice this song in the brass band. it's different, but it's fan. I remember christmas. The day after tomorrow is christmas. l want to play this song.
Beautiful. No better arrangement, and no better recording of this arrangement. I cannot follow the conductor at all, though. It's almost like he's conducting an entirely different piece.
Some ensembles tend to play behind the conductor's ictus, as opposed to exactly aligned. It depends on the ensemble and on the conductor. ruclips.net/video/ILkYMD8zuH8/видео.htmlm3s
When an ensemble is this good, there are times the conductor is completely incidental. I strive to reach this level with my bands. I often tell my players, "we'll know you've mastered it when I can just sit back and watch."
There are various interpretatiions of the song's meaning. There is little doubt in my mind that it concerns a son who had to leave Ireland due to its troubles. That is supported by both the lyrics and Irish history.
I've never ever in my life seen oboists play with some sort of foam-looking mute in their bell!!! Is that a Marine Band thing, or am I missing out on something...?!?!
Bro I play trombone in band and this is what we’re playing and it’s so freaking anoying to lern -__- but this will be the outcome at the band concert so totally worth it
LISTEN: Beautiful. Perfect. LOOK: Where in America do these guys hang out? Why are there no black musicians? Do blacks not want to play that music? Or what?
Matt Bell If this is a comment about the oboes wishing the balance of the band....that’s the way Grainger wrote. Band is soft, and oboes are in the bottom of their register. They will stick out, rather like a bagpipe, and that’s what Grainger intended.
If this guy is the conductor why doesnt he tell the band to do it in the English way? There really should not be any slowdowns and pauses in this song. Just straight forward. No 'milking' of the song and its phrases. Do it the straight forward English way. Itll come out more beautiful.

No, not dead. Untrained. It is the consequence of Pop Music’s over attention to lyrics for meaning at the expense of all that music has to offer.

I have that clarinet solo to play in a competition in a couple of weeks 😬

So whoever wrote "You Raise Me Up" definitely plagiarized a bit from this tune right?
Well, it was based on the folk tune that this piece itself was based on, so they both plagarized
