man great guide! i love maokai since season 13 and i've been playing him top jungle and support in season 14. quick question tho, the link which leads to the google docs seems to have been blocked (something about safety cocerns). anybody else encountering this problem?
Thanks! Mao is super flexible, and I low key want to try him in mid one day (that's my secondary role). I haven't updated the guide in a few patches (since Mao has reverted back to being balanced), but the link should be updated again!
Sometimes instead of kaenic I will go spirit visage. This is usually in the requirements of: enemy team has weak Magic Damage Profile, I have a healing/shielding ally (like senna, oriana etc.) and there are long fights where I will use my passive (and Knights Vow) often, as I will massively increase the healing and shielding whilst still remaining tanky in this game.
That's totally viable! I know Kaenic has better base health regen, but having those extra heals and shields from your team would make me highly consider Spirit Visage especially since you will most likely be grouped up near them anyways. Karma mid is decently popular in my elo too!

idk if u will say it in the video, but what do you think about the maokai nerfs coming with the new patch?
Hi @metalhead8599, I'll be making a video next week addressing the nerfs, but didn't want to jump the gun before they are official. My initial thoughts are that the changes are fair. Maokai is a bit too strong right now due to a variety of reasons, but I still expect him to be an S tier support pick. I wouldn't be surprised if more nerfs are coming if the win rates don't drop far enough in Patch 14.3. Stay tuned for more content!

Ummmm... if you are truly new to the game, there are A LOT more champions I would try out first before choosing Maokai as a main. As much as I love playing Maokai, he isn't the most challenging character to play. A big reason I do main him is he is strong in the current meta, as opposed to him being my "favourite" champion to play xD

If you've tried all the champions, and still want to just focus on a few. My recommendation is Nami, Zyra, and Maokai!
Those are my 3 most played champions and they teach you different things. Nami is a great enchanter to pick up cause of the massive heal on W. Zyra is a good AP support and can do lots of damage if you land your spells. And of course there is Maokai who is one of the easier engage champions in the current meta.
At the end of the day just play champions you like!

For Maokai, I don't usually buy it unless I'm looking to go an AP build.
is this still the same with the upcoming 14.3 patch?
I expect this guide to be valid throughout Season 14 even if there are any major changes.
I'll have a video talking about why Maokai has been so strong to start Season 14 coming soon and how patch 14.3 will try to lower his win rate.
My prediction is that Maokai will be STRONG even in next patch, and I wouldn't be surprised if more nerfs will follow (but will be sad 😟)

It's definitely a MONSTER of a document, but it was really just a few hundred words I would type out after a League loss to help me de-tilt. It eventually just ballooned into a 15K word thesis paper.
