Bernardo's style is basically the fundamental of my jiu jitsu game since I was a white belt. Being 40 year old, I find his techniques are the best for older grapplers because how simple but very effective they are.
Amen… when I roll with former wrestlers or ripped body builders half my age, I just like to do the Faria OU, especially with the lapel after the DH Faria Sweep, then just tripod with my elbow digging into the diaphragm like a Heimlich maneuver. The more they squirm the more the diaphragm gets pushed. They always comment how heavy I feel but I’m just a middle aged dad bod with severe sciatica
Even in his rolling footage, he pulls half guard and runs the same sequences. The dude is an absolute master at what he does and exemplary of what can be accomplished with pure fundamentals.
Great video! One of my favorite BJJ athletes who I looked up to coming up. A lot of the newer practitioners only know him from his Fanatics work - but a great reminder of his championship pedigree. The look on Lovato’s face says it all…
Bernardo has probably the best big guy ju jitsu game plan and execution. Love his game because I'm not super flexible and hate being in bottom closed guard. I try to implement my game based off him and have had success. His RUclips channel is amazing because he has everyone and anyone he/we can learn different techniques from to try. Love this guy
He also gave great battles to Rodolfo and Buchecha when they were the cream of the crop, not winning for an hair against both in at least an occasion. Such an underrated player.
I don't think he's underrated. His achievements only exceeds all his gold medals. Thanks to BJJ fanatics everyone on the globe has the access to high quality instructionals. Thanks to this BJJ made huuuuge progress over last few years worldwide. He is one of the most important figures in BJJ teachings today.
I absolutely love Bernardo but he lost fair and square to Rodolfo, on multiple occasions. The only time Bernardo faired well against Rodolfo was at the pans in 2011. Lost 8 times out of 8. That being said, he's one of my favourites ever.
@@MCHiphopotamus but I wasn't suggesting anything different really, never said he won any of those either :). Rodolfo and Buchecha were super ahead of the competition in those days, I still consider an achievement he had two competitive matches out of many.
dude thanks for making this video. Thank you coach Bernardo. Never met you but learned so much. I love jiu jitsu. Can't thank you enough. You have been very instrumental to my development. I'm a 1 stripe blue belt after training for 14 months. Oss.
I remember when I first started at MGA Bernardo had just arrived. I had no idea who he was or really much about the BJJ scene. Then I watched him run through world class competitors and it looked basically the same as how he did it to colored belts in the gym.
I love his style, and I have a game that uses that as a guide. Love half and getting much better and deep half and use the two back and forth to get a sweep. Also love over under. Almost 50 and it's a style that works well into old age. Something he even acknowledge himself.
one of my favoite moments in IBJJF history is when bernardo dove deep half guard against ROGER FING GRACIE! yes he got passed and tapped, but holy shit what a thing to happen
He was one of the absolute best in the world for a few years and always gave some all time legends some tough battles. I always wanted to see more of him in no gi just to see how he did. Awesome athlete.
People are stupid that says bernardo only have halfguard and over under, his SIDE CONTROL and BACK control is one of the best ingame or it was. I never eeeeever heard anyone talk about bernardos back control game, he is one of the best he have so many submissions from there. Same goes to his side control.
Good Video, but you're not entirely right about saying that Bernardo was the original mind behind lapel guard, I don't mean to be the guy that points out one use of language then makes a big comment but Bernardo used Lapel "assisting" rather than a whole guard based around the control of the Lapel like worm guard or squid guard that were invented by Kennan, The control of Half guard comes from the lower body connection and often through the use of an under hook or in Bernardo's case a lapel, as he would often allow opponents to flatten him out with an under hook then he'd feed the lapel and sweep them, and the control from deep half comes from being so far beneath the opponents center of gravity you gain different types of advantages, worm and squid guard are kinda "pure" lapel guards where as Bernardo's isn't that
Thank you! And you're entirely right! I just felt that people may have believed Keenan was the first athlete to make heavy use of the lapels from guard. While Keenan definitely took it to another level as you said, Bernardo (and im sure many before Bernardo) were innovating with the lapels earlier on.
@@DeepDiveJJ Yeah I understand that, It's just that I thought that It was kinda a paradox for you to be putting respect on one athletes name who doesn't get enough respect for his accomplishments then diss Keenan, Keenan doesn't get the respect he deserves either, people are judging him from what he is now, well past his prime, but no one judges him from what he once was, he carried Non brazillian competitor jiu jitsu for a long time and was one of the best technical innovaters of our time, he deserves respect for that , possibly your next video idea?
I believe Gustavo Falciroli from Godoi jiu jitsu helped him with his game from deep half as Gustavo was one of the best deep half players from the mid 2000’s Check him out !!!!
This is a Huge Honor for you to mention Bernardo and whats up with this “was a Beast” stuff ? he is still a beast! don’t believe me ? fuck around and find out for yourself
Love Bernardo. Such a beast. Not pretty jiu jitsu at all just grind n grind. Someone once told me he didn’t know how to shrimp. Not sure if true or not.
I always found half guard too fuckn complex to execute, need a lot of patience and timing unlike the close guard for example, i don't think is worth the effort if you are looking for a new game plan ( this make more sense for short guys tbh) unless you´re really used to

😂
😂 so accurate

Yup you said it. Simple yet effective!
And for people who hate guard passer running around

The awesome thing is that anyone can implement his style of jiu jitsu 🙌
Keenan may not have invented lapel guard, but he is the one that made it boring.
🤣
Lol did you hear his reasoning for that? He said he wanted people to use it so much that IBJJF would implode.
😂
@@StrumVogel Thats hilarious 😂

Hard to find videos this good on the Gi

Damn that’s crazy
He was a pioneer. He not only put his opponents to sleep but the spectators too
I’m dead 😂☠️

As Im getting older its something I try to incorporate more and more into my game as well. It really is timeless style of jiu jitsu!
same here. 50yo, exact same height and weight as bernardo. i copied his entire game! still working on getting better at deep half.
BERNARDO IS A BEAST, don't let the friendly humbleness fool you.
😤

🤣 I actually did a breakdown on that match a while back. Man, Roger shut that down REAL QUICK lol
I'm new to BJJ and knew Bernardo only through youtube. My dude is a killer with a sweet disposition.
He’s really is the most unexpected savage on the mats
He also liked doing the straight knee bar from over under passing :) great video
Yup he did! Thanks for watching! 🙌
Wow! You’re right, I had no idea. Great video 👍🏻
Thank you for watching! 😁

I haven’t watched much of his No gi actually 🤔 wonder how his game transferred from gi to nogi
@@DeepDiveJJ I don’t know how much he’s done actually, I don’t think it’s much.
4:10 is called the Faria sweep and it's pretty cool when you learn it. The guy on top feels a false sense of stability and is actually helpless
Great video. I still use his deep half to over under pass combination.
Thanks for watching 🙌
Great video!!

The over/under pass is hard to pull off nowadays - people push on your head. Bernardo even mentions that in a video he does with Gordon
Yea thats probably my most common defense for it. So effective!
Great video
🙏🙏 thank you
Good stuff, thanks.
Oss! Thank you for watching!
Good call!
🤘
Such great techniques luv deep half and half guard and use pressure passing but Bernardo is the best
Thanks for watching!
Man I trained with him once, I felt like shit he is freaking good and strong too, i am heavy weight too man 90kg with gi he is awesome
Lucky you man. I visited his gym but unfortunately he wasn't there so i didnt get to train with him 🥲
nice study about thecnices of the mister halfguard itself
Oss 🙌
On point
💯🙌
Huge honor for me to watch this
I feel we forget about Bernardo sometimes. Just Smashing top level guys and holding them down for minutes at time.... then strangling them lol.
pure dominance 😅
Love his under over pass

Bernardo gets the respect he deserves on the mat

When reading the title: "Duh!" ;)
😂
Don’t forget braulio estima was also a pioneer of lapel guard stuff
True 🙌
Hes a beast
👏👏
whens the Tainan vs Jansen vid dropping?!

The highest submission rate i saw watching that era. RIP but he was the only one that dominated Leandro and submitted

Why did sprigg get two points for bernardo pulling guard 🤔
I guess it wasn’t seen as a clean guard pull? Not sure 🤔
