    No, religion isn’t the problem. I’m religious myself. The problem is people who use their religion to force their personal beliefs onto others and demonize those who don’t share those beliefs. That’s what society has the problem with. You live your life and I’ll live mine.

    • @domiy13
      @domiy13 4 месяца назад

      Secularists force their beliefs onto others as well. Look at Communist regimes that ban religion and force the population to submit to the State.
      And you can't even look outside your window today without being bombarded with woke culture stuff like LGBT, BLM etc. These people hate religion for "forcing their beliefs" yet they do the exact same thing. 😂

    Well, kids are expensive though. There is a certain point where it isn't responsible to bring more in if it means going into debt over it. For example, you need a vehicle that will accommodate 6+ kids. Your house can't be a 2 bedroom condo. Not everyone is set up for that life.

    • @asmrallison
      @asmrallison 4 месяца назад +5

      Often people with limited means can afford to accommodate their large family by spending less on unnecessary expenses and more on that 6+ kid vehicle. And if you are a part of a church community and in need of a suitable vehicle, often that community can assist since they love big families. I'm not trying to be flippant or dismissive; it's certainly a big responsibility to raise any number of children. But I think the point Abby is making is how a religious community keeps us connected and supporting our neighbors. It takes a village to raise a child.

    I am a follower of Christ. I don't follow religion in America because it is about showmanship. Any one here who is Christian will understand this. I do agree that community is important.
    The thing that Catechism has gotten right is Pre-Martial Counseling. It teaches couples what to expect in marriage. You get a couple married twenty years or more to mentor couples.
    Having children is important. It's important to only have how many you can support. Not the state.

  • @alexwanton9590

    I agree with all the points. We need to be more social, and kids are good. However, I don't think you need to be religious for it. There are many drawbacks to religion. For example, it automatically puts people in boxes where one religion hates the other. I don't think that's a healthy thing for us as society. It sometimes leads us to reject facts which are based on science.

    Counterpoint to everything you just said about community and the importance of relationships: the aftermath of the global COVID lockdowns has shown us that there is a (not insignificant) portion of us who are introverts through and though. Lockdowns were a relief for us because we stopped having to participate at a level of sociability that we were ultimately uncomfortable with. We are not unhappy having fewer friends or relationships as we are already at our physical and mental limit of sociability.

    • @qqqalo
      @qqqalo 4 месяца назад

      Introversion is a mental illness. If you are an introvert (in the sense that you actively choose not to engage in social interactions when the option is there), then you're likely suffering from avoidant personality disorder.
      The human mind demands interaction and community. Mindlessly consuming media in the hopes that a screen will dull the desire for connection is idiotic. A machine will never replace that.

    I am all for having lots of kids and a big family! BUT i just wanted to point out that there are plenty of respectable reasons for not wanting more kids. Not all of the reasons are, and not all people just want to stay out late and get drunk and do things that are not good. You could want to help your community but not want more kids yourself. You could want to focus on your career **because of the joy** that it brings you and others, but again not want more kids yourself. And obviously many more reasons that are still good things.

    I loved your takes on all of these. These types of communities are not showcased enough. Thank you for sharing. Having lived in both predominantly religious, family-centered communities and predominantly irreligious, individual-centered communities I've noticed there are clear differences in the general happiness as well as the mental and emotional stability between the two. We are naturally relational creatures and religion or faith provides the why to invest in relationships rather than just in ourselves.

    This is a very interesting video, also your hair looks great! I'm not religious, I practice alternative spirituality but I will say religion can be beautiful when it's not abusive or used in a forceful way. Most people who are against religion have dealt with alot of trauma in the name of a certain God or deity, so it makes sense that something that caused one so much pain one is fervently against. But that being said, I'm happy you love your culture so much and you share it with others. It's interesting for sure, plus with the insanity of the world today and everything feeling so off-balance I think we could all use a technology free day and reconnect with nature, ourselves and each other.

      What does it mean for a religion to be the "right one"? Many religions can be a path to God. Judaism understands this but, see C.S. Lewis (perhaps the most well known recent Christian apologist) on the Tao or natural law and how there are similarities among many religions (although Lewis would certainly have said Christianity is the best path to God).

Why do Zionists spit at Christians, why do religions hate each other or at least refer to other religions as heathens with false idols etc, if all religions are seeing the same God. Yet they all think their religion is a loving, good, kind, compassionate religion but then hate other religions.
      Even if most of them are all believing in the same god this alone does not change the idea that they can still all be equally wrong.

    I love, love, love the idea of planned community like that. Our church (several of them, now that I think about it) would encourage people to move close to each other. One group had the 10 minute walk rule. I wasn't within the boundary, but I wasn't that far and it was pretty fun. But it seems like this would work better if it's long term house ownership, not just renting. What usually happens is people do this as singles, then get married, and once kids start coming along, instead of staying so they can have your situation of all the kids playing together, the families start moving away, searching for better schools or a bigger home or whatever. It's sad because as a single... I'm always the one left behind.
    I'd give anything to have kids! I think 4 is perfect. (Especially if it works out with 2 girls/2 boys.) But the more, the merrier! It's so weird that 4 is considered a "big family" these days. I'm only GenX and when I was growing up it was average to have at least 4 kids. My family has only 2, but I remember more from my friends' families. People are so weird today. Children are a blessing!

    I love the neighborhood/community for sure. But I’m a mom of 1, and after an absolutely awful pregnancy and horrible PPD/PPA, I only want one kid. Not everyone is the same and unfortunately most of us don’t have the village to help out. My whole family is spread out, my friends all work full time, and while I live in a row home neighborhood, I rarely see any neighbors. I think our world doesn’t always allow for us to live this way.

    Good post. I think your comments center around the big benefit of religion (when done right): community, community, community.
    As somebody who is agnostic and with deeply religious family (you’ve met my mom but not my estranged rabbi brothers), even I can admit that the secular world hasn’t figured out the community thing at anything remotely like the Orthodox Jewish world.
    My critique centers on two things. By design your commentary missed the thing that “community” is in tension with: conformity. Namely, to get that sense of community you gotta conform to community norms and expectations….which in the case of Orthodox Judaism can be very onerous.
    Second, one of the benefits you mention (disconnecting from technology for Shabbas) can be taken to be overly extreme. See what happened with disconnecting on October 7th and turning the phones on with a changed world. While I think there is a benefit to disconnecting from technology, I wish it was done more in moderation as opposed to a binary disconnecting/not disconnecting.
    But other than that stuff, good commentary. I look forward to seeing you and your husband again the next time we come to South Florida.

But the biblical God, the Messiah, Jesus Christ, does not require a certain number of people to be present before He will hear / answer prayers. Nor can any of our good deeds pay for our sins and allow us into heaven. Only the once for all sacrifice of Jesus, the Messiah can do that.
