Steve, Jimmys right. The 5mins he diagnosed in a nutshell when NASCAR died. The crew chiefs starred getting the engineering big head. Look at the time frame. End of the 90s, beginning of 00s, ask the fans that's when it went downhill. Crew chiefs started picking driver's who didn't know anything but what they were told. Damn shame. You just documented the beginning of the decline. Great job.
We were at Bristol in the late 90s and Sterling had the outside pole. He came out looking for his RV that hadn't shown yet. He joked around and was so fun for maybe 20 minutes. When he left my brother said you know that the sport is changing, gonna be like the other big sports soon. I thought noooo!!!!
Steve and Rick thank you so much for doing these interviews with the legends in racing past. You guys are legends in racing just like the drivers and crew chiefs.
When I hear Jimmy talk about the old times it really hits home how things have changed. I was 6 when I heard my first NASCAR race. The farmer next door to us and the boys had an old RCA radio and were sittin' on hay bales......they were passin' a Mason jar around and you could hear a pin drop until something happened on the track....then all hell would break loose. Now I see the Bristol night race, hundreds of seats covered and still only !/2 full it saddens me. I remember waiting for 8 years to get tickets, you couldn't buy one....season tickets were in folk's wills passed down like the family heirlooms they were. They say this is progress and the sport is fine....these old eyes step around piles of that most of the time. It would seem since NASCAR went public, the corporate money rules. I miss the old days and really miss what was once the true spirit of the sport I love. Thank you for all you do to bring the history of the sport to us all. Thanks to Jimmy for all he did to bring fans to the sport.
Thank you! That was a great interview and you let him talk. Amazing stories and great information from behind the scenes we would never know about. I forgot Jimmy was so funny! He sure tells it like it is and he's way more right then he is wrong especially at the end.
Great interview! I was always curious why Spencer only raced one year with Ganassi. He had a long pretty respectable career. We miss his “excitement” out on the track, Now a days. What could have been though, so many almost wins.
Its amazing to listen to Jimmy after listening to Lepage. Jimmy's stories are incredible yet believeable. LePage's stories were normal yet not believable. I think Jimmy's stories add up on racing-reference and video. At least the cup stuff
@@joshjarnagin3161 definitely a different format and atmosphere for him. Dale Jr wasnt his friend and there was an elephant in the room. Hes known Rick and Steve a long time and they just let him talk on and on.
@@joshjarnagin3161 true sometimes that Mike guy should just be sent out to get sandwiches on juniors show.Honestly junior and Mike kinda sounded like crybabies
Oh man that 1991 Bistol night race was unbelievably wrenching. Jimmy was going to win the race had the part not failed, he could get around Bristol as good as Rusty could. If he had better stuff, Jimmy could have been right up there with Rusty and Darrell in wins at Bristol.
Top ten interesting Nascar figures of all time. Great memory recall and doesn't mind telling you his thoughts. Don't ever ask Mr. Excitement a question that you don't want the unculled blunt response to!
Absolutely spot on Jimmy! Driver's today, last 6-7 yrs, just puppet's, controlled mostly by the Crew-Chief. There of course are the few exception's, such as Harvick, Brad K, Chase Elliott, Blaney's boy, these guy's had, and some still have their own late model/Dirt modified's ect...car's that they grew up building themselves & working on them, but most of today's guy's don't know a torque wrench from a lug gun & that's not really good for the sport, IMO anyway 🤷🏻♂️ Another awesome interview guy's, keep it up!! 💪
I never liked Spencer until I sat and listen to his stories I can relate to him he is a true racer most of the time he is just misunderstood I like his style he says what's on his mind.
i remember that race he nearly won in 92 at bristol. had them covered. only real competition was kulwicki who won after jimmy broke. but how'd he replace hut 4 times? i count twice. 12 car. 27 car. other number i can thin of he iddn't in were 26, 8, 23 (bill davis). maybe busch? or maybe carter once?
That man is a heck of a race car driver and living proof of how big business, sponsors and have beens have killed what used to be NASCAR. You should of been a contender every Sunday.. (frustrating)
new hampsAhire truck race don,t remember year early 2000, s jimmy top 3 ,spin out, back to end of field ,5 laps later jimmy in top 3 , spin out , back to end of field ,5 laps later jimmy in top 3 ,happened 2 more times for real , he passed 200 cars that day I swear and didnt win. A racer like Dale
Anybody that thinks the 1979 Daytona 500 wreck wasn't Allison's fault is blind. Same way is was Davey's fault when he flipped at Pocono after pushing Waltrip into the grass.
Nascar started to go down hill when they started the big multiple car teams . 2 was OK. then it was 2 w/a test team making 3 . They lost all the Independents or shoved them to the back . Corporations took control , went PC and chased the Pop culture dollar .
Spencers problem was he just told it as he saw it. That doesn't fly in the political scene of these major league sports series. They are trying to project an image. That is what they are selling, consequently they kill the sport's fan base with all of their BS.

That was freaking awesome!! Real stories from old school days. Spencer was a great interview.
Best interview ever. Met him when I was 15 years old in Darlington. Cool dude whom shoots ya straight.
Steve and Rick thank you so much for doing these interviews with the legends in racing past. You guys are legends in racing just like the drivers and crew chiefs.
You guys need to talk to Jimmy some more his stories are great.
Another great podcast. I can listen to Jimmy all day
You're a class act guy Jimmy! And one heck of a driver! 🏁🏆(my dad Vic Kangas was crew chief for you in 1995)💗

Jimmy s always right 😃. Miss him behind the wheel. Like to hear what he thinks of the current Whelan mod drivers and series now.
part three...?
I remember Jimmy driving the Blue #24 Modified at Shangri-La speedway in Owego, NY, great times.
Nascar is missing drivers like this👍 we miss you Mr. Excitement!!
Love this guy
Awesome stories!!!

It’s interesting how different Jimmy is on here vs DJD

Hell of a driver and his determination earned him the nickname Mr. Excitement for good reason, just look back at his highlight real

I didn't realize that Chip basically treated him as a glorified test driver. Sucks to be in that situation when it's not what you signed up for.
Always liked Spencer. See he’s still wearing that hair piece haha.
Just have to say at the end Jimmy's correct. The Engineers changed Nascar .
Gone a win is two different things
It really Hurts my heart how jimmy Spencer doesn't feel like he can express himself
He can Express his self but it's the backlash that makes him gun shy piss on the haters
@@sillygoose2508ha I was just joking
@@jamesbowers5946 I feel you dawg he has no problem expressing himself I was a little too quick without realizing the sarcasm my fault
Actually I'm embarrassed by my lack of cognitive awareness I'm the one that usually puts out sarcastic humor well played dawg
21:28 Dale Earnhardt did that. Didn’t end well for the seagull.
His car was NOT LEGAL in Both of his super speedway wins , look it up it’s a FACT
Rich dudes - Multi car teams-franchises - ruined nascar
the last 10 mins...... tells the truth ...

Engineer's= to many chief not enough Indians. Who's behind every good train wreck????? Engineer's

You just got to like him
Jimmy was just a motor mouth, not much of a racer at all, but it takes all kinds to make up nascar.
Love the Scene Vault, but Spencer is nothing but a big liar.
Like you, right?
Hahaha 🤡
