Two years ago we got caught in a bit of a crappy situation, but ABB saved us a huge amount of work. We were migrating about 75 servers from a hosting partner that we were cutting off. Our dedicated backup boxes were delayed due to Covid and we had about 3 weeks before they arrived and needed and interim solution. We had some Rackstations floating around so setup ABB, about two weeks in our hosting partner got hit by ransomware on a delayed payload which copied to our environment during migration. Their backups were toast, and we ended up having to restore everything from ABB. It all worked perfectly, we retired ABB after our dedicated boxes showed up but I can see it being an excellent choice for SMBs with the right workload.

Glad to see more Synology vids , I think your original "Synology For Business Backup" video got me into taking snapshots of my work and investing in BTRFS

Have you done much with the rsync backup option between different storage vendors? QNAP, TrueNAS etc. Synology to Synology I expect is very straight forward compared with cross vendor?

This is probably one of the best reasons to have a Synology. Others in no particular order are: Surveillance Station, Office365/G suite backup, Directory Server...

I've been a little confused with Synology...I have 3 physical servers backed up...what if the server itself crashes completely and a new server has to be purchased...can you restore the entire server back to its state on new hardware (not VM)? I haven't really had a good answer on this yet.

Yes you can , that's what they refer to as the "bare metal" restore ( I stand to be corrected). That's the entire purpose of the backup actually

There is one MAJOR problem with active backup for business. Synology takes forever to update it. And specially on Linux, if you get for exemple a kernel update that breaks support you’re screwed for months or have to force yourself downgrade. For exemple when Debian 11 came out took them more that 6 months to spot it. This of course only applies to full image backups and not files but still….
Personally I moved forward to Truenas. With synology pricing us 70% software 30% hardware.

great presentation for the symbology active backup. if you could cover the metal restore will be even batter. (what I mean is restore the dead server)

    Missing features on ABB
-USB or External Storages to save the backups
-If a task missed still shows all tasks are green on the calendar view. In that case , it should not be green. It should be show that day in yellow or red color If a machine was not in network or powered off so in a case of a task has been missed it should not be still green

I'm trying to figure out a way to Backup 2 Mac clients to NAS1, and 1 Windows client to NAS2 and then backup NAS1 and NAS2 to each other. (OpenVPN between NAS1,NAS2)

You did fast forward at the end on Physical Servers. Correct me if I am wrong, but did you say with the "Restore>Entire Device" option missing for Physical severs, this activity can be accomplished using the portal? Interested in how you go about that because I can create the bootable USB drives and perform a bare metal restore for PCs but not for servers. I will appreciate the steps from your end. It is the one thing I haven't figured out yet. Thanks!

    • @LAWRENCESYSTEMS
      @LAWRENCESYSTEMS  Год назад +1

The button to create the bootable is not there but that same bootable ISO/USB will restore the "Physical Server" option as well.

Love this software, I've been using it since it came out. I have had one MAJOR problem with it (version 2.4 I believe, the version before the current version). I updated the agent on a number of the servers we manage and it completely locked them up. They are Hyper-v servers and it would break the networking stack for the entire system (host and VMs) any time a backup would run, the only fix was to completely uninstall. They are all gen10 HP servers with Epyc processors, never had a problem with the Intel versions. I'm hoping the latest version fixed the issue but I'm a bit gun shy.

Hey Tom, just curious what you run your company website on is it WordPress a certain theme? Do you know which I’m setting up a computer repair I T website and I’m lost on where to start. Thanks

The theme is some base that I don't recall and customized by my developer back in 2016, I have not really changed it other than some other than some of the text since then. Don't overthink it, customer don't spend much time looking at your site.

i have been using this for several months to backup my pc's at home to my nas and also at work to backup physical servers and a few pc's. what has saved my butt more lately is active backup for 365. Both great so far. Only had a couple of hiccups with ABB that were most likely my fault.

glad you touched on the point of pc vs physical server. i originally had our servers at work setup as a pc and recently changed to physical server. i like the ability to be able to restore straight to the synology as a VM if SHTF.

I have been considering moving from Microsoft's DPM to full time synology. We currently use a couple of 5 bays to back up all of my VM's. Just have to figure out the Exchange aware issue (or get rid of it). And how to make an immutable backup procedure... using multiple synology's.

Synology Hyper Backup is VERY SLOW ( less than 20Mb/sec ), unusable in every way.
