Nonsense. Rick James was just as talented as Prince. Drugs affected Rick James earlier cutting his career short. Drugs just caught up to Prince later and took his life also. Rick James was one of Motown’s Senior most trusted producers. That was an honor in itself with as much talent Barry Gordy had at his disposal! Rick James was a much better singer than Prince unequivocally. Rick played several instruments just like Prince. Besides the Mary Jane Girls, Rick could out sing Prince any day with his far more powerful voice. Think of the duets he did with Teena Marie. Two great voices that made some memorable music together. Prince was a musical genius, as was Rick James. I honestly can’t say one was better than the other overall. They were both exceptional talents. Lastly don’t forget Rick James was once a part of the famous Group Crosby, Stills, Nash, Young, and James, before Rick went solo. The one thing I'll give to Rick James vs. Prince was his nurturing of Teena Marie at Motown in her early days. As great a musician as Sheila E is, Teena was the whole deal: excellent singer, great songwriter, fine musician and proficient producer.

Quick story. 🤗 My Dad, Mom and some others went to see Rick James. At that time, Prince opened for Rick. According to my father, Prince hadn't quite won over the mass appeal of man blacks. So, Prince wasn't enthusiastically welcomed. (Who the hell was this tiny, light skinned cat wearing bikini briefs, high heel boots and a grey trench coat?)
Well, to make a long story short, Prince closed his set...walked off the stage and to my Dad's surprise, practically the entire venue/crowd was whistling, cheering and screaming for Prince!! He literally STOLE THE SHOW!!
Rick walked out smoking a joint. No one cheering. Most of the crowd was actually leaving. Prince had worn out the crowd!!
My Dad was drenched in sweat. "WOW!" That was all my Dad could say.

Tehan Jones, I had the exact same experience in Rochester, NY didn't know who Prince was other than His First hit "Soft & Wet" and to be honest, I thought it was a woman who sang the song... long story short, Prince was opening for Rick, opened up with "BamBi", trench coat, leggings and all and he crushed it. Life changing moment (musically) for me. I was literally blown away. Since then, in my opinion, our era's Mozart.
That's a good story to share. It's funny how we get what we didn't expect from certain people in the most amazing ways.

Ricks momma was a cougar in a major way. I remember this 🤡 Monty Harper who was between 7-10 years younger than Rick, was trying to extort her bye threatening to sell the intimate details of their relationship to several different magazines. I knew Monty personally we went to the same grammar School at the same time. After we became grown Men we had beef and the chump even had me locked up for bustin at his punkass one day. But anyway It got to the point where the magazines had a somewhat private bidding war over the rights to the sorted details of said story of Rick's mom and Monty. I was living in Buffalo at this time, and I remember one night we were in a club out by the airport, and Rick had his bodyguards jump the cat named Monty. Monty had them locked up too. You might be able to Google it when Rick James bodyguards jumped on Monty Harper at the club 2000, right outside of buffalo next to the airport. If I was Prince I probably wouldn't have gave that ol cougar my autograph either. What kind of mother does that type of schit especially in the same town where she raised her children at and knowing everyone in Buffalo knew Rick and his brother Head. As a matter of fact Rick's brother wound up shooting Monty's brother behind that same drama wit their momma too. That's crazy.
