    Ensemble Al-Kindi & The Whirling Dervishes of Damascus
    Classical Arab music

    Watch the full program: goo.gl/4H4QqJ
    Spirits of Music is an unusual musical journey through the centuries, with stops on all continents. Inspired by their creators' different faiths, the works on the program have a strong religious background and are moving examples of the emotional power and effect of music. Internationally renowned soloists and ensembles as Bobby McFerrin (a ten-time Grammy Award winner, he is one of the world’s best-known vocal innovators and improvisers, a world-renowned classical conductor), Nigel Kennedy (one of the world’s leading violin virtuosos), Sibylla Rubens (has emerged as one of the most compelling lyric sopranos of her day) or the Gewandhaus Orchestra Leipzig will perform popular works from the European music tradition, encompassing Bach, Mozart, and Verdi. Many magnificent examples of religious music come from artists as Kroke (playing and composing with the realm of authentic Jewish music), the Kuumba Singers (dedicated to the expression of black creativity and spirituality through song), Mari Boine (one of the most impressive folk artists of the contemporary time), the Bulgarian Voices Angelite (24 women whose hypnotic chant circles the globe), Vocal Sampling (a Cuban six-man a cappella group which has been described as one of the wonders of the musical world) and the Ensemble Al-Kindi (is currently rated among the best formations devoted to classical Arab music). With the inclusion of world music, the program will achieve a highly suspenseful juxtaposition of European and non-European music.

    Its important to note, that this is actually not a dance, contrary to its elegant movements. Its actually a form of meditation, that they reach a sense of mental and spiritual bliss in the movement, and is not intentionally meant to be a form of entertainment.

Shams could not read nor write but was told at an early age he would meet someone who would be a voice for him which turned out to be Rumi the poet and teacherof others. Sham's memorial site in Iran. Both were originally from Persia. Many ideas were attributed by Rumi to be his teacher's.

      Ray correa self-induction into a state of trance is nothing new. It has been practised all over the world for thousands and thousands of years. This is the reason why the use of recreational drugs are so popular today. Problem is, they are very addictive and therefore harmful. People must be educational to understand the perils of any addictions and their harmful fallout. That said, addiction have nothing to do with sinning, and punishment and religion. The addict needs medical help and not priests, etc.

    • @hamrunizspar1

      Truthfears Guilty. Yes, so I've heard. Is there anything that Islam allows? Strange that the main thing that Allah created - have a guess what! - is largely forbidden by Islam. I find this quite strange. Although it explains why Islam is big on Satan. Satan is a necessary scapegoat because blaming Allah would be unacceptbale. Also, using Allah's gift our brain - this too is forbidden and asking too many of the wrong questions(that challenge Allah), Allah will get very angry and punish. This is what he does to people who do not use their brains as he intended them to.

      Allah made sex pleasureable for an obvious purpose. People like pleasure which can become very addictive. This god's creation when abused can lead to serious addiction. But addiction is an illness that needs psychiatric treatment not punishment. Also, when something god created is forbidden - in oher words, it is natural - being guilty about it and going against our natural instinct to celebrate life through music and dance and being careful with it........depriving ourselves of all this, our innocent natural instinct; this leads to sexual neurosis and that is a very serious condition. The psychoanalysts Freud and Jung had a lot to say about it. Here is a taster. Not for the faint-hearted either.
      www.vision.org/visionmedia/biography-sigmund-freud/597.aspx

    • @hamrunizspar1
      @hamrunizspar1 5 лет назад +3

      Quite! Not appreciating god's plan for humanity(and it can be appreciated but with intelligence and wisdom so that the plan does not harm us)brings its own problems. As I said, neurosis and worse. The beauty of freedom of physical expression is that, when exposed to it as a matter of course, a decent person does not sexualise the imagery. On the other hand, when something is forbidden totally and is taboo, things become over sexualised to the person who practices the taboo. It's all about familiarity and being sophisticated about it. A person who is never exposed to anything is frightened of everything and misinterprets everything. Of course there are many people who abuse the freedom and they suffer and make others suffer. But people who repress their natural god-given feelings suffer too. Neurosis, domestic violence. Human Nature cannot be comfortably sealed in a box so that it troubles no one. Of course it's a big subject and you don't have to accept any of it. After all it's a free world. Isn't it?!

    • @hamrunizspar1
      @hamrunizspar1 5 лет назад

      It's a free world in the sense that a person can be free provided s/he takes care of his physical and mental health. Tough because humans are not a perfect species and life (human consciousness)is a difficult burden to bear. This is the reason why religion/s were invented. I myself am an atheist. I am grateful for the life my parents gave me and I am humble enough to know that when I die, I die. Like I have never existed. There is no purpose to life(why should there be - believing otherwise is all part of human arrogance)Our aim should be to preserve life through knowledge and creativity. Believing in fairy tales is neither wise nor creative. That is how I experience the whole thing. Life is difficult is the first thing one is told in psychotherapy. And when people get depressed or otherwise distressed, what they need is modern healing methods not mumbo-jumbo.

    This culture goes back to the Ottoman Empire and the Anatolian Seljuk state. It is not a dance, it has a worship value. It comes from the word semi meaning "hearing" in Arabic and it means "song, tune, music, dance" metaphorically. Over time, it became a name for Sufis to listen to poems and hymns in a state of ecstasy, and during this listening they came to ecstasy and made dhikr while standing. During the whirling dervishes often danced whirling, so the sema was also called "devir ve deveran" (turning). According to the understanding of Sufism, all the facts of the universe are heard during the sema, and those who perform the whirlwind then try to act and live as these realities require.
    Sema, which was performed with a religious and mystical enthusiasm by Mevlana, one of the 13th century mystics, developed gradually, especially after Mevlana, and became a ritual in its own right. Today, the Mevlevi ritual is called "sema" for short. Mevlevi whirling ceremonies are one of the heritages of Turkey registered in the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity determined by UNESCO. The Sufis, who lived just before the age of Mevlana and were contemporary with him, regarded the sema as halal for its people and performed the sema. When Sufis came together for conversation and dhikr, they chatted, listened to advice, and recited poems and hymns about love and love for Allah. The dervishes, who listened to the poems and hymns sung by the beautiful voices called Kavval and goyende, were emotional, excited, and started to jump and spin from their places. The turning would last until the dervish calmed down. Dervishes would return individually or collectively. The sema performed by Mevlana was the continuation of this tradition.
    Mevlana, who was not interested in the sema before, met with Şems-i Tebrizî and fell under his influence, and began to whirl on various occasions, sometimes ecstatically. The sema, which Mevlana likened to "a wine of insatiable love", was accepted as one of the ritual methods of Mevlevi; Over the centuries, it has become purely artistic.
    Although Mevlana's thoughts began to take on the identity of a sect, during the time of his son Sultan Veled, the sema was made according to certain methods and rules in the 15th century, during the reign of Pir Âdil Çelebi, son of Sultan Veled's grandson Emir Âlim Çelebi. Today, the Mevlevi ritual is called "sema" for short.

      This date back to the 12th century, in Andalusia then east, the first to document this is Maulana Rumi in a poem, mentioning "Whirl like a Qalander" , and Qalander Yousef moved from Andalusia to Centeral Asia early 12 century.
      But later it went viral in western Asia, middle east, with evey county adopting Whirling to its tradition.
