While grieving my dad , I found this beautiful song. My parents are from Romania - I was born in the United States of America. We have this instrument at home and occasionally he would blow into it a melody. He loved playing instruments and loved listening to beautiful melodies. This piece brought tears - I cried. I'm not sure if he ever heard this but in my heart, I know he would have loved it as much as I do.
He definitely grew up with song in his heart as every romanian has.. He would be so proud of u for loving this song... May he rest in Peace... And for u... Stay strong...
We call it the Romanian Nai. It’s one of my favourite and the Caval Flute .Romania has many beautiful traditions and customs. When I was little my mom used to make me dance Paparuda to make it rain when it was dry. So many beautiful memories keeping our traditions and then I moved abroad and miss every single day Romania.
You might not believe this but this was my bird's favorite song. He was very sick and died tonight. I'm listening to this and I can't resist but to cry. I love you Johny.

I am 61 years old and I remember Mr. George Zamfir when I was at student at Seneca college. We went on a field trip to Wards Island in Toronto and I said to my friend, " I hear this beautiful flute music, where is it coming from?" I followed the sound and came to a fence and WOW WEE, there it was, a dream come true. God Bless George Zamfir. I love your music.

This instrumental piece (Der einsame Hirte, El Pastor Solitario, The lonely Shepherd) was composed by the German music mastermind JAMES LAST in 1977. ( Have a look at Wikipedia or at any commercially available sheet music of this piece)

But the composer was James Last and I don´t think when composing it he was thinking of the pain, the history, the soul and the spirit of Romania, especially since he composed the melody before he met Gheorghe Zamfir.

It’s almost incomprehensible how 50 years ago this piece was my go to for comfort when feeling a lonely teenager and now this master still performs it. The combination with the orchestra is wonderful and the piece only got deeper with age. Wow. Thank you, sirs.

I am from Pakistan and 47 year man. I listen this beautiful performance in my childhood. I mean in late 80s. When I was just 10 year old. But this performance is still in memories. Music has no boundary and language its multi lingual represting all segment of the society at same time with same feeling. Hence it is very Spectacular & heart touching indeed.

I wish they did the entire song, from lone piper to full orchestra, then back to lone piper to finish. Usually, it's lone piper, then mass pipes with brass band and back to the lone piper to finish... this is the only orchestral piece to do amazing grace the justice it deserves that I've ever heard.

The melody is a creation of James Last and James Last had the idea to let his "Shepherd Theme" play with the pan flute when Zamfir performed in Hamburg in 1977, even if Gheorghe Zamfir made the instrumental piece world famous for his brilliant interpretation of the pan flute part.
I cannot imagine this song is composed during a dark era in Romania. What a soothing sound that eased the Romanian during their dark era of the regime. May Romania be free, prosperous and unity.

In March 1982, Zamfir was exiled by Ceaușescu, who told him never to return or he would be murdered because he'd dedicated a concert to God. So you see, this moment, getting to play such a triumphant performance with an orchestra of phenomenal musicianship in front of the Romanian people, as an afront to Ceaușescu's monument (which forcibly relocated 40,000 people and killed hundreds during its construction) - this moment has added emotional depth for both Zamfir and the audience.

I wish they did the entire song, from lone piper to full orchestra, then back to lone piper to finish. Usually, it's lone piper, then mass pipes with brass band and back to the lone piper to finish... this is the only orchestral piece to do amazing grace the justice it deserves that I've ever heard.

Invatatorul care te Batea la palma cu Varga, rabdurile kilometrice la care lumea subnutrita de Prin turnurile la fabbrici statea si Cand ajungea nu mai gasea nimic, frigul in casele inchiriate de Ceausescu cu apa data cate 2 ore dimineata si seara, ratiile de mancare, teroarea comunista... Ramanea numai muzica sa-si planga jalea si amarul...
M-am regăsit, în tot ce ai scris Bogdan!! Departe e ROMÂNIA...mai ales în ziua Sfântului Crăciun....masa plină, părinți, frați, surori,bunici, nepoți.....tradiție frumoasă! Și piesa mă face să lăcrimez...!! Crăciun Fericit, ție și familiei tale!

This was in Bucharest, in front of the Palace of Parliament, a egomaniacal monument of Ceaușescu. In March 1982, Zamfir was exiled by Ceaușescu, who told him never to return or he would be murdered because he'd dedicated a concert to God.
So you see, this moment, getting to play such a triumphant performance with an orchestra of phenomenal musicianship in front of the Romanian people, as an afront to Ceaușescu's monument (which forcibly relocated 40,000 people and killed hundreds during its construction) - this moment has added emotional depth for both Zamfir and the audience.
