I bought my 4.25 in December of '23 ....... It was made in May of '23. My bud bought his in early '22 and when I compared mine to his 4.25, you could see that the safety not only fit better when engaged, but had no "over travel" at all. Other aspects of the weapons over all fit and finish was better than the early versions. The mags I got compared to his were different, also. They resembled the Staccato's feed lips and were different, though ever so slightly, than my bud's. I have about 700 rounds through it so far and not one hiccup. I added a light, extended slide lock and a Cyelee "Wolf X Pro. I couldn't be happier. Thank you for the work you put in on the vid's. 🙂
Thanks for these updates, Hilton. Other than installing your spring guide and spring plug in my Prodigy 4.25" I have done nothing else to it and it continues to run great. I feel somewhat compelled to put that out there, since the complaints always seem to be a lot louder than the positive experiences, yet I think there are a lot more positive experiences with the Prodigy than internet chats and forums might imply.
My prodigy 4.25" has been wonderful. Did a trigger job with an atlas short flat. Reduced the recoil spring by 2 pounds. Trigger had 3.5 pound from the factory. Took it to 2.5 lbs. Bought some atlas mags. But all mags have ran great. I haven't had a single malfunction in my first 500 rounds. I'm impressed so far.
Hilton, Excellent run-down on the 4.25. I am not a gunsmith, and fortunately, have not had issues with my Prodigy yet. No where near the number of rounds in that some put in. It's coming out of winter in Alaska, and I got my Prodigy in October. I have around 500 rounds in so far. Using factory mags, some of them are great, a couple of them have serious "rattle" and feed issues. I suspect those ones may be out of spec. I have always appreciated the quality of your advice on 1911 and Glock platforms. Been "following" you on your website since about 2005. Much respect. One last thing: it is "funny" how varied experiences can be with the same tool. I bought two last year that reviewed "poorly" in many circles, and they are both two of my three favorite EDC pieces. The Prodigy, and a CR920.
Great, honest review and info Hilton. 5K flawless rounds through mine after a trip back to Springfield. At 2500, I put an EGW ignition kit. Two reasons, one to see the difference, two to learn how to work on the 1911/2011 platform. Well worth the learning experience. My two complaints are the slide lock being hard to get at, especially with big paws and the two piece guide rod. As an owner of a Staccato P, their tool less guide rod setup is the marquis setup IMO. I don’t need to trade an Allen wrench for a staple or paper clip, so, I’m picking up a tool less GR kit and slide stop soon for mine. Otherwise, it’s a well broken in, great shooting platform that was my gateway to higher end/higher quality 2011s. Thanks for all your videos, very helpful and honest.
I have a Springfield loaded parkerized model in .45acp. A lot more rounds through it than most will put through in their life. Got in new almost 7 years ago. The MIM parts work just fine, maybe if I need to rebuild the gun I will change them out. But you are right, done right MIM isn’t really a bad thing.
I tried “tuning” one of the mags using the Dawson Precision kit. Cracked both feed lips. Still works for now. Springfield reamed out the chamber for me and my 4.25” has been flawless.
Great video thank you, I have the 5 inch Prodigy I just order the other day one of your spring plug and guide for it. I put a 10 pound recoil spring and a 17 pound main spring in the gun polished the disconnector that was dragging and polished the slide. Gun runs great no malfunctions so far about 800 rounds and the trigger pull is now 2 1/2 to 3 pounds from the original 5 1/2 pounds.
My 4.25 prodigy runs great no jams ftf fte nothing 1000 rds thru it so far I added a 13lb flat recoil spring and a 19lb mainspring very smooth shooter.
My 4.25 is at the factory. Was only extracting about 40% of the time. I know they’ll take care of it and can’t wait to get it back. Especially now that I have the 19B plate for the 509.
@@k9rka489 That's awesome to hear! I'm new to the platform so I was thinking of doing a deep clean and hand cycle 1000 times to get the extra ceracoat off then hit it with new parts. It'll be a learning experience for sure.
@@BloodySoup74I put a captured guide rod and trigger from Atlas in, as well as a gen1 staccato magwell. Nothing wrong with the stock parts, just the way I wanted to go. Everything else is stock. You’ll definitely want to handle cycle it to get the cerakote off the rails.

I am now taking a second look, especially considering I cannot really justify grabbing at Staccato right now. Thank you.
My 5 inch prodigy had several issues. First was I couldn't run reman ammo through it at all. No matter who I got it from the rounds would just get stuck in the chamber. No issues with new ammo. Second, shot a few rounds out of it and the fiber optic in the sight just went flying off. Replaced that then had a bunch of failure to feed issues. Heard the first gen version had a 9 pound recoil spring for some reason, brought a 12 pound spring and haven't had any issues since. So far haven't had a failure for 2k rounds so I'd say I worked out the kinks. Love the gun but man it was stressful fixing up something that cost such a large amount.
I'm surprised you even tried to run reman ammo thru a 1911/2011 platform, much less a brand new one. A lot of stuff I've read on 1911s in general (years ago) say that reman is a bad idea for the platform.
I have over 1200 rounds through my 4.25” and I stopped having malfunctions after about 300 rounds of Hot Load Ammunition and constantly cleaning the firearm…after I got to 700 rounds I did….Triarc Extended Slide Stop, Wilson Combat BP Single Side safety, Wilson Combat BP Disconnector, Wilson Combat BP Extractor, Wilson Combat Firing Pin Stop, EGW Extended Firing Pin, Extra power Firing Pin Spring, EGW Keyed Reverse Plug (.332), EGW Tungsten Guide Rod, 8 LB Recoil Spring, 17LB Mainspring, Atlas Match Ignition, Red Dirt Solid Flat F2 Trigger, 10-8 Magazine Catch, and then last but not least I filed in a Disconnector Ramp (Marvel Cut) into the slide/polished it….now it’s as smooth as butter and the lock up is just as good as my buddys Atlas and that’s saying a lot for this platform that’s being fully upgraded that is….
Great video and definitely subscribed. I got my 4.25” couple of weeks ago, shoot a little over 1000 rounds and not one issue. It’s my edc now. *12:20** Yeah... that's not true at all. You've never priced a 2011/STI. There are FOUR parts that take up 80% of the cost. They are literally trying to save $10 on the gun using MIM parts that account for 20% of the cost of the gun.*
I wouldn’t buy shit from his company again! I sent a rifle in for repair, and when they sent my rifle back to me, they sent me someone else’s rifle! When I contacted them, they act like it was my fault! Then said it happens all the time! How could this happen? The rifle has a serial number on it there’s also an RMA number attached to the rifle. I had a letter with my address, my phone number, the RMA number and the serial number attached with the rifle in the box. I was able to contact the owner of the rifle that I received in Springfield only sent him an email after I notified them I had his rifle telling him they have miss placed his rifle and was working on locating it sad totally sad from a company like Springfield.
I'm here waiting for the "my Prodigy has 50k flawless rounds with zero modifications. It's the best gun ever conceived". Comment.
I got you, bro. "Mine has a flawless (wait for it).....50,001 rounds!" LOL
Some people don’t have issues with theirs. I haven’t had any with either one of mine.
I have 0 rounds through mine, which isn't mine cuz I don't have one. Absolutely no malfunctions of any kind!
Lol I just bought a Commander Prodigy and never shot it but racked it 10k times
