As mentioned in my own comment, Danny Phantom's My Bother's Keeper did a MUCH better job at handling depression and mental illness per memory than this did. Yes it's handled in one episode, but Danny being able to bring HIMSELF out of his funk is just so empowering. "I'm tired of you dumping on me. And I'm so tired of dumping on MYSELF. Jazz never did that even when I was mad at her." That line still sticks with me after all this time.

I liked the hug, not because of the hug but because of what it represented :) The hug itself isn't what bought Steven back, it was the fact he spent so long hiding that side of himself out of fear he would be abandoned for not being 'classic Steven'. The hug showed him that even in his darkest moment, when he became the evil monster he thought he was, they refused to abandon him. It was a 'we have seen the worst part of you, but we still love you' moment. Before the breakdown, no matter what support they said, he would reason to himself that they're only saying that because they don't know the monster he is, but after there was no way to tell himself that. Yes, the hug was cheesy, but proof that they still loved him flaws and all is exactly what he needed at that moment.

    • @toysoldierkelsey
      @toysoldierkelsey 4 года назад +37

This! All this! The hug represented more than that, Look at what Monster!steven is doing when he first transforms, he's not stomping around the town, he's slamming his head into the hillside and grabbing at the ground like he's going to fall over. He's not going on a rampage, he's having a panic attack. He reacts violently to the Gems attacking him because from his point of view it's become a sell fulfilling prophesy and he has become the monster. The Hug represents the fact that they will love him no matter how he changes and will never see him as a monster and that's what brings him back. It might have been a bit rushed, but Wow was it powerful for me.

kel poole love the way you addressed his behaviour as a monster. That absolutely clicked with me. I saw myself in it a little, when Im at my lowest point. And when garnet hugged him i felt that was the exact right move. You need someone who looks past your outward behaviour (especially with how more violent and angry it looks than its supposed to be.) and realize whats going on inside and provide you with the love you need. I cried a lot and im sure 50% of that feeling came from relating to this with my own experience with mental illness. Dont know why saber wants monster steven to stomp arround gozilla like its not what the message was... idk I felt monste steven was handled exactly right.

I thought if Jasper had stayed shattered, THAT would've been a very heavy, very satisfying end to her character.
    Sort of a,
"those who live by the sword, die by the sword",
and I imagine when Steven opens his hands, we just see Japer's shards floating in the water.
THAT would've been heavy, and made more sense for his breakdown and monster form later, because I just eyerolled when she suddenly reformed right away.

Maybe they become destructive instead, like how he made those crazy plant Stevens that were pretty chaotic themselves- imagine Jasper does reform, but as her corrupted self instead.

I felt this way too, like, Steven had already known and heard that everyone loved him already. He already knew all of that. This series was about inner demons, so I dont think him knowing he's loved by others was enough to "resolve" what he was going through. But at the same time, I'm not sure how they could've done that. And I've seen others say this isn't a "resolution" but just the beginning of him getting better. I just wish we could've seen, somehow, in his head, what he was going through during the monster episode. Maybe they could've used white diamonds power to their advantage. I'm not sure. I think if the episode had been longer, it would've felt less rushed.

I connected with Steven very heavily. I’m a lot like him, very empathetic and I deal with other people’s problems more than my own. When my depression hit... it took 7-8 years before I actually got help. This isn’t because I believed that the people around me didn’t love me, I knew they did and they told me so, I was sick... and hated myself... and wouldn’t allow that love to truly touch me. Plus being sick in front of other people is worse than being sick alone honestly. What Steven received... is what I needed. To be sick and actually be showered with love and understanding rather than “talk to us” and “tell me what’s wrong” and “you’re gonna be ok” and “we’re worried about you” ... those things didn’t help me and they didn’t help Steven. He had to break down for everyone to understand that this wasn’t about their feelings but about Steven and his feelings, not until they did that was he able to start healing.

    • @christopherhicks9944
      @christopherhicks9944 Год назад

I personally viewed the show as Steven knowing he has a very good support system but he also emotionally felt like he was only valued when he could help them in some way. The final bit where all the characters are all crying and blaming themselves is how ALL of Steven’s emotional heart to hearts go. Yes, they are connecting, but it is because Steven is acting as an emotion sponge for the other characters to grow and connect with THEMSELVES. It is never presented the other way around and that is why Steven could not make the emotional connection that his family was there for him even though he logically could tell they were. I think it made the show even more complex to depict this difference.

I'd love the hug if the Diamonds weren't in it. Because two episodes ago we saw how just being around White could induce a panic attack! Because they're all a primary source of his trauma, so physical contact from them is a terrible idea! If they had contributed to Steven's healing by learning to stand away from him, and acknowledging his TRUE family, it would have been a great end to their arc. Instead, even though they're sincerely worried about him, it feels like they're just trying to fill the Pink-shaped holes in their lives.

This season wasted a lot of time. Every time something is about to happen, the show backpedals and says “it’s ok” or “nevermind” or “leave me alone”.
It dilly dallies about, but doesn’t let the moments build on top of each other. The best it gets is how Steven proposes to Connie but she tells him to slow down, which leads to him having gem-anxiety attacks prompting Connie’s mom to screen him for PTSD, which leads to Steven hanging with his dad but realizing his dad unwittingly sabotaged his childhood; all leading Steven to go to Jasper to learn some resilience because he’s tired of being coddled, but then it goes too far and he ends up killing then resurrecting Jasper which prompts her to become his follower. That’s 4 episodes of solid story development; and then Steven pulls the plug and goes to talk to the Diamonds, and the whole thing with Jasper’s worshipping him as a diamond, and with his dad’s shitty parenting, gets dropped and the show’s momentum is set back to zero, so for the part where he becomes super-happy and then becomes a monster feels very rushed and forced because it wasn’t using the pre-existing momentum of the story. Like, this whole season, it’s like a car going from 0 to 60 mph; then suddenly is stops back down to 0, and then out of nowhere the car jumps to 190 mph. The pacing and sense of character progression keeps jittering all over the place which means it doesn’t hit as hard as it ought to.
Also it’s bullshit that the Diamonds are included in the group hug. They Tried To Kill Him. Numerous Times.

Rose was their beloved and relatively "deceased" leader and comrade who fought for their freedom and blessed them with Steven and their new home, Earth. I agree, its easy to think her motives may have been questionable after so much is shown about her in such a way, but I chalk that up to the perspectives we are given!! It's rare that we get to see inside Rose's internal motives and dialogue. but at the end of the day, Rose wasn't just playing. This all was a very serious and a very costly rebellion and Rose clearly had the strength, courage, and humanity to rebel against both her family, her homeworld, her mold, and a very evil and powerful dictatorship in favor of giving and experiencing freedom love and growth that would forever impact the way their civilization would develop... And Rose never got a redemption arc!! They just kept weighing her character down with flaws and wrongdoings and just ended up leaving her as the most hated character at the end of the series in a show where the bad guys are forgiven and redeemed!! 🤦‍♀️🤷‍♀️ what I would give to have Adult Steven come to real terms of acceptance and understanding with his deceased mother-- for his sake, he deserves not to live with disdain of her! And she deserves to be remembered as flawed, imperfect, strong, courageous, loving, and above all more human than any other gem.

A fine balance would be Pink being a bratty, short-tempered child, but learning and growing and coming to appreciate all around her. Each conclusion came down to "Let's be friends" or "Hugs fix everything". Kind of a shit lesson, if you ask me.

I thought Future was a continuation of the series just with a different name and that it would go on for a few more seasons. I was legit surprised to find out one season ended the entire show itself. Like, I was looking forward to more seasons of the gems clashing with the Lapis's, Jasper, White diamond in the intro where it looked like some new massive evil would come, how they'd confront gems who enjoy hurting or destroying, etc. I was hoping we'd explore the colonies, and get a closer look at homeworld's everyday society. I thought we'd explore Volleyball's past, allow her to develope as a character. I'm legit so curious about Pink Diamond as this violent, angry child, it's an interesting aspect to her past that I wanted to see more of and not in just random lines like, "oh she was violent." And I thought we were gonna explore Greg's basckstory, I was honestly so interested but they made it about Steven and I just felt kind of cheated?? I get he's the main focus but Greg's story needed it's own episode(s), you don't often see serious cartoons, especially ones about family, talk about how it's ok to distance yourself from those who aren't there for you despite being blood related or people you've had history with. I wanted some sort of exploration on how it feels to be Greg, not only about coping with learning his wife's past, but also coping with learning about how the woman he fell in love with and married looked completely different than in her Diamond form. That's another sort of conflict that should've been discussed- sounds petty but imagine finding out your spouse was once this violent person and had to undergo extreme plastic surgery decades after you thought you knew them.
And maybe I wanted to see Spinel react to Connie and having an episode focus on her dealing with the feeling of being "replaced" (romantic or not). And also more on the Lapis, Peridot, Bismuth dynamic, fleshing their chemistry out instead of putting them in the side saying "ok, their arcs are finished."
I will say I LOVED seeing Steven become angry and seeking Jasper. I don't think him being with her was completely useless, he sort of learns how to allow himself to feel anger. I mean sort of, they could've explored it and said more than just "anger = violence = bad". My opinions may or may not have anything to do with me enjoying it when a kind character snaps due to their own inner turmoil :X /it's sum gud shit/. Imagine bringing Lapis's rage into it especially with Jasper there, that'd be kind of difficult to accomplish but would be so fascinating.
Also, the Bismuth-Pearl thing took me by surprised and I loved it. It's lowkey and sweet, gives the whole feeling of "starting anew."
I'm glad they finally added that Ruby and Sapphire are not always garnet and had their own lives. That was a major criticism of Garnet I had. I loved her and enjoy Ruby and Sapphire but I didn't like how they fused permanently and unfused unless due to dire circumstances (or Steven's birthday). It seemed less like a symbol for marriage and more like your identity is only defined by being being in a relationship- That Ruby and Sapphire as indivudal characters didn't matter especially when they couldn't handle being apart without some sort of conflict between eachother in the past.
And while I'm not a massive fan of Connie (I don't hate her), I liked the conflict she and Steven had to solve. It was a little weird but it was new and it was interesting.
Steven Universe is a very fasincating, pretty show but very flawed in handling its fantastic premise. It really had the potential to be an amazing show with the right set of writers. It never reached such as level but it did very good. I find myself wishing there was more to some of its stories. Idk I ramble, I like the show and the ideas they explore but I wished I took advantage of a lot of ideas as well.

The fact that Steven was supposed to represent people with mental health issues, but instead came off as a sociopathic weirdo is what bothers me. I've met those cases, I *know* those cases, Steven having all those traits of the extreme is highly unlikely as he has NEVER shown signs nor the emotional immaturity at all in the series to developing these traits. He could've went to town destroying some buildings and the gems (idk) would try to calm it but it doesn't work because of his anger. (Some people are just too angry that they would need to be alone..) So, Connie comes in, walking and looks up seeing steven as a monster, destroying the town and starts to cry and saying stop to Steven. Steven would accidentally hurt Connie and would look back to what he's done. Seeing the problem he's caused, he turns back to human and runs towards Connie to see if she's okay. Personally with me, Change your Mind had the most impact on me. Especially with the animation at the end by James Baxter. I just didn't feel it with this final episode. However, the conflict with Steven and all this rage inside of him has to be the most teenage thing I've seen in media. I myself feel like a monster, sometimes. Surely most people have, but that's the thing about teenagers, they try to hide their problems and conflicts from their parents or adults because they don't want to be ridiculed or in Steven's case, he didn't want the gems worried about him. In his mind, he wants everything to be perfect, and you can see this in the Steven Universe Movie too.
Anyway, tl;dr Steven Universe Future is a great example in media of how teenagers bottle up their emotions.

As soon as they realized that it was only gonna be 1 season, they should have SERIOUSLY started trimming the fat. You wanna show us Steven having a mental breakdown as the final arc of the show? Awesome, but don't go off in different tangents that you never intend to pick up again or have almost nothing to do with that. You could have cut out Bluebird, A Very Special Episode, Steven Tag, the episode where we meet the other two Lapises, Greg's Childhood, etc. Hell, even Cactus Steven could have been cut or reworked to better fit the arc.

It was filler. We know next to nothing about the history of the Gems and the history of the alternate Earth the series takes place on. There were also many unanswered questions like what is in Lion chest or what is going to be done with that Lapis Lazuli that is destroying planets. The show gave way to many episodes to the largely irrelevant townies. As a result, many character arcs the Crewniverse likely wanted to do were unfinished or unsatisfying. The Diamonds and Spinel for example had their entire "redemption arcs" off-screen. Jasper was poorly handled. We never see Pearl completely move on from Rose and get with someone else.
Also many of the previous conflicts were pointless as shattering is not longer an equivalent to death for a gem. They removed the consequences of shattering to "redeem" the Diamonds and because they don't have the guts to kill off anyone.
There are a lot of other issues with the writing of Future and the overall SU franchise.
You really can't blame CN for anything because they gave the Crewniverse almost a decade to work with. Most shows on CN don't receive 7 years to work everything out.

Those moments had the proper emotions in them to bring out how heavy the situation is. But when the ending with the foreshadowing happened, when he corrupted into his monster, THE MOMENT I HAD BEEN WAITING FOR FOR MONTHS, i didnt cry or feel anything. I was only excited about my theory being proven true, but the proper emotions weren't there. It wasn't heavy, like it had been before. I was let down by that. When it ended with him leaving Beach City, i was upset and disappointed. I ended up crying for weeks. My childhood show had ended and the ending didn't satisfy me at all. It made sense for Steven to not go around destroying things. The whole episode was about Steven's problems, and how for once, he needs to accept help from everyone else, rather than being the helper like he thinks he needs to be. Having him also be a deadly threat would've muddied the message.
Also, the whole thing was literally a meltdown triggered by PTSD (they mention that in the last episode), and portraying that as a great threat to others would really send a bad message about people with mental illnesses.

I think the issue is overall we know the Schtick of Steven Universe to the point it’s basically a meme now lol: “You can be a fascist and solely believe in evil ways of destroying all of life, but can be redeemed by a child saying “you’re wrong, just love each other” .... it isn’t necessarily going to fix that over and over again tbh” - me lol
I think a lot of the issues people have, especially with this ending (which makes the most sense tbh out of all the redemption arcs), is that a lot of bad guys are very redeeming when they shouldn’t be, especially the Diamonds. Granted, I think Sugar has an interesting take on these arcs and how it reflects to our reality; in that, human brains, in real life, have that switch/change of beliefs and values and how people who commit atrocities or are bad are not “inherently” bad... it’s just wiring issues.
That makes me think of cognitive therapy and rewiring your brain. Although easier said than done with psychopaths, narcissists, sociopaths, and the like.

But Steven needed that the MOST since he was the one being dried of it on and on, episode after episode.

@@micahcook2408 I appreciated that they actually explored Steven's trauma and anger and how someone like him would deal with it, or in this case not deal with it. Steven Universe was always about taking human emotions and putting them in the forefront between character interactions and conflicts. Steven was an empath to the nth degree and that's a lot of weight to carry around, especially for a teenager. Add trauma, anger, self-doubt from not meeting high expectations, exhaustion, and heartbreak, that emotional instability can cause real damage to oneself and the people around you if you choose not to address it. Steven didn't know how to address it cause he never learned from anybody how to. That's why he believed his friends and family didn't understand. He didn't need to just be told that he was loved and cared about. He needed to feel it. I don't think many people realize how underrated true honest affection from the people how truly care about you is. Sometimes it can be reassuring or even life-saving.

I also dont think the hug fixed everything, he stopped being a monster but he also went to therapy for months after we just didnt see it. Also I dont understand why people dont like/get why they all cried and blamed themselves? I'd replaced the hug with White Diamond's mind powers with the Crystal Gems joining in communicating with Corrupted Steven with they are their for him only this time White, Blue and Yellow admit all of their mistakes, how it caused indirectly everything that happened, promising even more that they will change for the better and they will never abandon Steven like they had abandoned Pink. The rest of the Crystal Gems then say what they said in the scene, though Bismuth and Lapis say more. As Steven comes to his senses due to their words, he is able to speak again while transforming back to normal. And for the final act that will heal his corruption, it will be Connie and Greg be the last who will speak to him that they will be there for him just as how he has been for them. Greg tells that he's not a monster, hes his son and hell support him no matter what. And this is where Connie and Steven's first kiss happens, finally transforming him back to normal.

The Jasper stuff was good because she offered him something that the other gems couldn't and I wish that was expanded on more and played more into the finale of it all. BUT. As someone who has dealt with trauma, guilt, and emotions, this was a wonderful representation of it. They did a great job handling it in a way you could still show to a child. So, the quick resolution wasn’t upsetting to me. I know that this is still a kids’ show. I want my niece & nephew to watch it.

I mean, the hug was exactly what Steven needed though. It would have been cool if the confrontation had been dragged out longer and you got to see more carnage and cool stuff goin' done, but that's exactly what it would have been: dragging it out. It would have been COOL filler, but it still would have been filler. Steven was having a mental crisis and the best way to push past it in the moment was the simple assurance that everybody he loved was there for him and wanted to help him. You might say that it could have been interesting if it took them longer to reach that conclusion, but I don't think figuring out what Steven needed was necessarily the hard part-- it was getting Steven to _listen_ to them and stop avoiding the issue, and nothing forced that to happen more than Steven physically turning into a kaiju sized abomination. A _literal_ Godzilla Threshold, as it were.
The Diamonds and Spinel sobbing about how _their fault_ it was was definitely weird, though. Like I know the idea was that it was _supposed_ to be melodramatic, because it was supposed to highlight how it wasn't actually accomplishing anything and was borderline a selfish thing to do at that juncture and they might have even been faking it on some level for "reformation cred", but it still came out of nowhere and really clashed with the rest of the episode. Not to mention all the Diamonds suddenly having their regret dialed up to 1000. Like I guess Steven turning into a monster was the straw that broke the camel's back, but none of them really seemed _all_ that broken up about any of the stuff they did before.

    • @Rohtix
      @Rohtix 4 года назад +9

See, you call it filler, but I think that kind of filler is necessary. If you resolve something too quickly or too easily, some people feel that, in the end, there wasn't any agency or brevity to the situation. A bit of tension building and extra happenings inbetween help solidify the concept, give it weight, give it presence and make it much more satisfying to resolve.
If every time someone turns into a giant monster it can be solved with a big hug, then the IDEA of someone turning into a monster isn't scary or threatening since it can be fixed quickly and efficiently without much happening.
      Know what I mean?

    • @ThePoltergust5000
      @ThePoltergust5000 4 года назад +4

@@Rohtix I think you meant to say gravity instead of brevity, but yeah I get what you're saying.
I guess what I'm trying to say is that as cool as it would have been to give some more pomp and circumstance to Monster Steven's whole biz, it was more important to focus on what had to be done.
A scene where Steven's lashing out ended up damaging some of Beach City (I don't think he would have rampaged, necessarily: Monster Steven only really became aggressive once the Gems were actively spurring him on to lure him where they could restrain him-- before that, him smashing his head into the cliffside, and latching onto the side of the mountain and roaring, seemed more like him just flailing in the throes of his breakdown) and the Gems tried to hold him back (not actively FIGHT BACK, that would have been a very irresponsible and counterproductive thing to do since it would only solidify Steven's belief that he was a monster that needed to be dealt with) would have been a much more satisfying way to build up to the eventual solution, but I think in the end it came down to them just not having enough runtime and wanting to zero in on what was most important.
_Maybe_ they coulda sacrificed an episode or two from the first half to stretch the conflict out, but... idk. At that point you're getting more into the real-life aspect of the storytelling, that being the limitations imposed by factors outside of the writer's control, and given how pretty much every episode in the latter half of the series contributed directly towards the ultimate arc of Steven's downward spiral, it would have been really odd for one or two of those episodes to have come out before the mid-series hiatus.

I remember watching the Episode "jailbreak" seeing the "Stronger Than You" moment and instantly loving this show.
This show has done a lot for me, for me personal, it made me have a renew respect for the new shows to come out of Cartoon Network.
Steven Universe I have said constantly has "Code Lyoko Level Quality" which I mean by that is like the Cartoon Network French import of years ago, it means that an animated Serise achieves at, Being Different from its contemporaries, Pushing Boundaries of Animation in an emotional, artistic and writing Performance than It's contemporaries and for being Special in many ways.
Steven Universe achieves and succeeds at this in every way shaped and form. This show made me also gave me a second chance to "Adventure Time" a show that I never liked until realizing that if it wasn't for Rebecca's involvement with that Serise, it wouldn't have led her to route in making this show come true, so I have to thank Pemberton Ward for his masterpiece that led to Direction we have today.
It also made be open minded and give a chance to all CN shows, I have grown to love like O.K KO Let's Be Heroes, Craig Of the Creek, Summer Camp Island, Victor and Valentino, We Bare Bears and Infinity Train.
So, I want to take this time to thank everyone Involved in this Serise:
    First and Foremost:
Thank You, Rebecca Sugar: The Hard Work, Attention to detail and leadership, is amazing, she broke the glass ceiling as being the 1st Female Creator in Cartoon Network History and you help me expand my pallet of quality animation, You made me grown my imagination. From the bottom of my heart, Thank You for Imagining and Creating this masterpiece.
Ian-Jones Quartley: Great Man, also an amazing talent animator, He also would create a "Code Lyoko Level Quality" with O.K K. O Let's Be Heroes, thank you for creating a fun, cute and amazing show and for your contributions to SU.
To all of the hard-working members of the Crewniverse: Rebecca said it best "THE CREW MAKES THE SHOW!!!" all of you have always delivered the best and your contributions for the last 7 years will be loved for years to come.
Aivi & Surasshu- the composition these two made is beautiful, the high quality of music they delivered the past 7 years is amazing and thank you for some of the great music and what music they work on in the future I look forward to enjoying.
    The Voice Actors:
Zach Callison: He is my age, He is 22, and he's Performance as Steven was amazing and he is an amazing Singer, I happy that now he is pursuing and growing his music talents outside from the show, I see him having great success after SU, and I wish him the best. Thank You for being the voice that is Steven.
Deedee Magno Hall: The Motherly performance she displayed as Pearl always fantastic, she has made us laugh she has made us cry. Thank you for being an amazing Pearl.
Michaela Dietz: An Amazing Personality they forever brought the amazingness of Amethyst, being able to show Humor and Sarcasm, but also show the Feels on the characters insecurities, that is amazing displayed of emotional heartfelt talent and thank you for being great embodiment of Amethyst.
Estelle: How Much More Can I already complement for someone who before SU has displayed at being an amazing Singer, Songwriter, Rapper, Producer & Actress. There is no one who was ever best to be voice of Garnet than Estelle, thank you for being a voice to amazing character like Garnet.
Shelby Rabara- Come On, I have to give praise to the voice of a character that went from being the one that i disliking and evolving to become the best and my personal favorite Crystal gem from the entire serise, there are huge majority of SU fans that when it comes to favorite gem, 100% it's Peridot, Peridot is Awesometaculer, thank you for providing the voice to Peridot.
To every voice talent that have been on SU: Charlynn Yi, Erica Luttrell, Tom Scharpling, Grace Rolek, Matthew Moy, Kate Micucci, Susan Egan, Jennifer Paz, Kimberly Brooks, Uzo Aduba, Patti Lupone, Lisa Hannigan, Christine Ebersole, Dee Bradley Baker, Sarah Stilles, Crispin Freeman, Sinbad, Nicki Minaj, AJ Michalka, Cristina Vee. Every Voice Actor Who Was On SU, In A Small or Reccuring during the show's 7 Year run, Your Preformances werw always the best.
Also, I will Thank the Fandom, Now the SU Fandom I been given mixed opinions On but what Fandom doesn't, I will be honest that for me personally I have had Positive Interactions in this Fandom, I am Grateful to be involved in it for the past 7 Years.
In Conclusion: Yes the show is ending but Happy Ever After Never Ends, someday we will see Steven and Gems again, maybe in a Graphic Novel Serise or even as HBO Max Miniseries (I wouldn't enjoy that, but I would understand if it happens) and even not involving SU, I'm looking forward to whatever Rebecca, Ian or Other Members of the Crewniverse will create.

My issue with Steven universe future was the fact that it felt rushed, bland and just overall annoying to watch, some moments had me drawn in and others had me changing it to binge watch shows I found more interesting, the writing for future was, I'm sorry but, lazy, it was also confusing and it was annoying that the final episodes had little to any time to really flow and have me on the edge of my seat, and the fact that so many of our questions will be left unanswered bugs me... Another thing was the villainizing of Pink, I liked the story reversal but I hated how they kept making her seem like a villain yet the other diamonds were so easily "redeemed" idk I love SU, I was glad to have enjoyed it, but it kinda left me *eh* instead of *aw*, Rebecca is such a huge inspiration, but her and her crew really needed better writing. (Also Pink was abused, it's no wonder she was so troubled and so bratty, she was neglected emotionally and no blue doesn't count, she was overly smothering and punished her sometimes unfairly plus she was treated as lesser and whatnot, of course people growing up in toxic environments will be effected and will have scars, I have so many mental scars so I found myself connecting to Pink, I'm not saying her actions are excused, but she overall changed and grew from her mistakes)

It's funny, I felt like the anxiety/depression angle the show was going for just didn't quite work. I myself go through some pretty serious depression. Well I know the experiences I have had aren't universal but, I think everyone can agree that the people important to them know when something is wrong. The gems just didn't seem to notice until the very end that Steven was having problems.

Actually it IS recommended to calm down someone who has a mental breakdown, even with a hug (you must be sure he wanted to be hugged first), rathen than threatening or beating them. It may be an anticlimatic MLP solution, but it makes total sense. Also the hug didn't fix all of his problems, it just stopped a situation from getting worse

Steven Universe was one of those rare kid shows where the theme was always about relationships. And while some people complain about the series and Movie on Steven not killing anyone or beating someone to submission and victory (like literally EVERY series out there) I can't help but think of a Marge Simpson quote and why I like Steven Universe as a whole..
"It was nice to see a movie where people solve their problems with words,.. instead of bullets and chasing."
I mean if the therapy hug bother you then maybe just go watch all those other shows that have that "punch it till dies!!" or "Do X to save X and beat X" resolution.

      1) He became a giant monster BECAUSE he was depressed and hated himself to the point where he believed himself to be one.

I can see what you mean, but I think the best way would be to have them try and attack Steven for a bit to subdue him, but realize the reason he turned into the monster was because he felt like a monster, and then they would try and hug and comfort him. I feel like the point of Greg and Steven disagreeing was supposed to be that as a kid, you believe with all your heart that your parents did everything within their power to give you a good life. You empathize with them indefinitely and genuinely put faith in the future that they are setting you up for. They were probably trying to illustrate that feeling you get as a child from an unstable home, that when you finally start to see how your parents might have been selfish and your future that you'd hoped they had planned for had not even crossed their minds. It was meant to make steve feel like this whole time he was just experiencing some kind of horrible confirmation bias, like his childhood had to be hard because he was special but in reality; he wasn't some predestined chosen hero for having a lot of responsibility. The reality is that he never should have had to shoulder that responsibility in the first place, especially not as a child. It took a toll on his life that put him at a disadvantage for his future if anything and it's ok to be bitter about that. Greg's reasons for raising steven the way he did wasn't based on trauma; it's because he was and always has been irresponsible and childishly whimsical. Even during the episode in the original show where Steven was about to lose his one and only friend because his dad was irresponsible, in the end it wasn't Greg who taught steven about time boundaries and responsibility. It took STEVEN taking responsibility and forcing his dad to uphold time boundaries because he was given the gift of adult foresight that scared the crap out of him and forced him to do the right thing.
