LCradio, The kid is way, way to young to make a decision like that. A child has no concept of gender identity, or the world and society in general. It is not the kids choice, this is the parents projecting that onto their child. One may even call this child abuse. This kid will be so utterly confused when they reach puberty, as if kids aren't confused enough by that age.
Okay. As someone who has been in the shoes of that kid I can confirm that is false. I had concept of gender identity at such a young age and acted much like how the kiddo in this did, yearning for that haircut, new name. The parents don't particularly like that their kid feels this way, feels different, you can tell by when the dad said he hoped it was a phase. I was more confused by why society suppressed me for so long during puberty than my gender identity. Those parents are good parents, they're doing things that makes the boy happy and it's not even permanent.
Fair point on the "so everybody does then since you did?", I'll admit that was a weak point for me. I can tell you though when I was truly questioning and asking my friends about their phases there was a clear difference, none of them hated themselves because of their identity.. We can infer from the video that this child hated the identity they were left with, from the name crossing out thing and the "why did God make me this way". What decision has truly been made here? The biggest decision truly made is the name and the pronouns, nothing permanent and almost like having a nickname if you think about it phase or not. These parents aren't going crazy with it signing this kid up for anything unreservable so no "final decision" has been made? So I don't see what point you were making there. They don't need to wait to fulfill the basic wishes of the child, how controversial they gave him a haircut and let him wear masculine clothing!
Thats probs because you could only count until ten. Our neighbours daughter could only count to ten a 8 years ago and she said very proudly "my dad is ten years ooOoold" and I said "cool and I'm twelve" she was so confused xD

I'm not being negative or hateful. But is there not such thing as being a "tomboy" anymore? I went through a phase when I was around age 8 where I wore boy clothes, high top shoes and wore a hat for a few years. I played with boy things and liked basketball a lot. But I grew out of that and I'm now as girly as they come. Liking fashion, makeup, jewelry etc. Your mind is not developed and a child is very easily influenced in adolescence. I just think it's a bit crazy to label your child as transgendered when that may not be the case at all. It could just be a phase. That's why we make choices for our children because their minds aren't ready and cannot make quality choices. Supporting them wearing the opposite sex attire is one thing but labeling them as transgendered is something totally different. I would have been pretty upset with my parents if they labeled my stage of wearing boy clothes as being trans. I was an unsure adolescent that had to develop into who I am today. I just don't understand why parents are jumping to this conclusion so quickly when children can't make quality, logical decisions yet.

But what I'm saying is that parents want to do interviews and such blasting their 3, 4, 5 year old child as transgendered. i can't understand why parents can't SUPPORT their child by letting them dress however they please. But By bringing them on TV and in the public spotlight and stating they are transgendered only confuses and influences their adolescent minds. When they get a little older is when they can rationalize and make more accurate decisions. But being that little is way too young to label your child. That's why at that age we believed in Santa Claus bc our elders made a big deal out of it and told us he was real. An adolescent mind is formed and manipulated by influences, good or bad. So by screaming to the world that your child is trans is influencing them to believe in their mind that it's true. Support is one thing, but introducing this idea on your child at such a young age just isn't right. Let them decide when they are old enough to make coherent decisions.
You seem to be missing the all important fact - this is not a "decision". It's just a fact. Children self-identify by gender at a very young age - as early as two or three (that fact is reaffirmed by the doctor in the vid). And if this child is too young to know that he's a boy the same must hold true for every other child he goes to school with. The boy that sits behind him? To young to know. The girl that sits in the next row? Too young to know. The rest of the kids in his karate class? Too young to know. And I don't see this as the parents "introducing the idea" but rather accepting the situation for what it is. They don''t have three daughters. They have two daughters and a son. BTW, male and female brains are physically different - they are composed of different types of cells and they think with different parts of the brain. I was the same way. I wore boy clothes, played with a lot of boy toys (girl toys too, though), played with mostly boys. I was jealous of my boy friends who didn't have to wear a shirt outside. Sometimes kids who didn't know me would ask me if I was a boy or a girl. And do you know what my answer was? "I'm a girl." That's the difference. I was fine with being a girl, I identified as a girl. I never actually wanted to BE a boy.

I heard of a situation similar to this. So a family who had a son, later had a daughter with special needs. As such, she needed alot more attention from her parents. Now this boy, between the ages of 3-5 started to play with girls toys and befriend girls and began saying he was a girl. Now the parents took him to a therapist, and the boy said "Mum and dad don't love me when I'm a boy" This boy developed the misconception that he was female because his sister got more attention, and so he tried to be female too. The boy after therapy is fine now. I'm not saying gender disforia doesn't exist, I am saying 5 years old is too young to make decision to change your gender. Also, my sister loves trucks, cars, has built computers and plays games, watches violent movies, and plays football all supposedly male hobbies but she never thought "I'm a boy because I like these things" the misconception that boy toys and girl toys, are taught by parents and media. This is ridiculous.
Really ridiculous! I was also a Tom boy but my mama never encouraged me to continue wearing boys clothes. I also used to like football and all sort of boys games but my mama really whipped me up and i stopped. I believe the parents encourage their kids to change their genders whereas kids don't even know what is to be a boy or a girl. Kids will always speak and talk i want these, i want that but a parent should take it as normal and with time, they will change their talk and indulge into other activities and they will forget what they used to talk but, never should they encourage them to follow the steps they want while they grow. As a Teacher i have seen many kids who have features of different gender to who they are but, as they grow they change and their God gave gender shows up. So parents should be patient and take it slowly their children will actually change as they grow in stead of encouraging them and taking it tooo seriously to follow what they always say who they are. SAD TO THE KIDS AROUND THE WORLD WHO ARE IN THE SAME SITUATION WITH PARENTS OF THIS TYPE.

I guess because there are different things a child will learn from either parent, and a single parent is likely unable to provide the amount of attention, or emotional support, that s traditional 2 parent family can (maybe having something to do with the single parent having to work and whatnot, meaning there is no parent to be with the child).

when I was around 4..I told everyone I was a boy and wanted to be called scott...the reason behind that was my cousins ( male ) always got more attention from my grand parents than my sisters and I. I thought I had to be a boy to be special.

So while taking a kid to a therapist sounds like the answer, it’s the therapists who are responsible for kids transitioning. In many states, it is illegal to not provide affirmative care.

When I was 5 I walked outside naked, my mom stopped me and said "people shouldn't be naked outside". When I was 6 I went into the street, my mom said "don't play in the street". This is not because she oppressed me but simply because she realized I didn't have enough of an understanding of the world to make choices like when to cross the road and what to wear. That is what this child needs, a parent not a door mat.

True - somewhere along the line they'll have to consider hormone blockers but all those will do is delay puberty. Completely reversible - stop taking them and puberty restarts. That gives him (as well as his parents and his team of doctors) additional time (years actually) to decide how to proceed.
It would not be an appropriate age at all to prescribe hormone therapy for this boy. That happens in adolescence where pubertal developmental occurs. And he is choosing to dress as a boy because he is a boy. Simple as that.
Nobody is pushing hormones on this boy. He's simply being allowed to live his own life. Hormone blockers won't be prescribed until he nears puberty and cross sex hormones won't be administered until he's somewhere in his teens. And then only if he (and his parents and the team of doctors that will have been monitoring him all along) is in agreement
Exactly. Just let the child be happy. Isnt the pursuit of happiness our main purpose in life? You dont have to conform to any societal stereotypes on haircut dress code etc on child that young. Just let them be. No harm done. When they are older they can see where they are at.

Whether or not he's going through a phase, the physical transition has not begun. It truly doesn't matter. At such a young age before puberty, the kid has time.

I mean, did these parents think of the consequences? First, they allow their daughter to become the boy she always wanted to be, even changed schools. Then, they paraded Jacob around on the news to make sure people new that Jacob was born female. It's so counterintuitive.
You don’t know what was going on at the previous school, for some reason it was better to change schools for this child. They were proud of their son and out as a trans family, this, to me, indicates the change couldn’t be successfully accomplished within the confines of the old school. To me they aren’t making sure people know Jacob was assigned a female gender at birth but that Jacob is transgender. Transgender being an identity too.

But they didn't realize he was being influenced by someone else and later in life he realized he wasn't a woman and hated what he had done to himself. How do I know this? Cause his suicide note is still in my office desk. He was my best friend and it tears my heart out that I didn't see it sooner. I could have been there and stopped him but I failed. This is borderline child abuse. It's okay for someone to act differently when they're young. When I was little, I climbed trees and dug in the dirt and hated dresses. I'm so glad my parents told me I was a girl, because they were right. This child is confused. This is a permanent decision, and this isn't right.

I mean, it’s not really abuse. Yeah, you may have families who do this to their kids for popularity, but some children genuinely experience this. It’s not something we can control, it’s something we’re practically born with.
look. right now this child says he is a boy. so call him a boy and talk about him like one. if he decides this didn't suit him either and says he is a girl, THEN talk about him as such. I worked with 5-year olds. At that age, their sense of gender and sexual identity is somewhat fluid. So are their personal boundaries. This is why they need guidance. It's called parenting. You do not let a toddler or child make major life decisions. This is absurd.
Turning that fluidity into a solid brick without considering anything else is also not helpful. Let people crossdress, let people act feminine / masculine independent of their gender, destroy gendered names
It’s not a major life decision. At 4, they don’t need puberty blockers, hormones, or surgery yet. If they change their mind at puberty, they can revert back.

now... his parents are allowing him to live as the gender he is/"wants to be", they are not giving him hormones or even changing his sex with surgery (hes 5, that isnt even legal). However, even if it turns out to have been a phase, he will have been happy in his childhood and thats what matters. If his parents decide to give him puberty blockers later on, that only stops puberty, it doesnt affect anything else and it is completely reversible. Experiencing gender dysphoria and not being able to be who you want to be as a child can have seriously bad influence on your future as far as mental health goes. So please shut up about him being "too young"
I don't think the parents should say "You're trans" to a 5 year old, I don't think they should say "You can't have that cuz it's for boys" I just think they should support the kid until the kid grows up and figures out how they really are

The kid is way, way to young to make a decision like that. A child has no concept of gender identity, or the world and society in general. It is not the kids choice, this is the parents projecting that onto their child. One may even call this child abuse. This kid will be so utterly confused when they reach puberty, as if kids aren't confused enough by that age.
Okay. As someone who has been in the shoes of that kid I can confirm that is false. I had concept of gender identity at such a young age and acted much like how the kiddo in this did, yearning for that haircut, new name. The parents don't particularly like that their kid feels this way, feels different, you can tell by when the dad said he hoped it was a phase. I was more confused by why society suppressed me for so long during puberty than my gender identity. Those parents are good parents, they're doing things that makes the boy happy and it's not even permanent.
Fair point on the "so everybody does then since you did?", I'll admit that was a weak point for me. I can tell you though when I was truly questioning and asking my friends about their phases there was a clear difference, none of them hated themselves because of their identity.. We can infer from the video that this child hated the identity they were left with, from the name crossing out thing and the "why did God make me this way". What decision has truly been made here? The biggest decision truly made is the name and the pronouns, nothing permanent and almost like having a nickname if you think about it phase or not. These parents aren't going crazy with it signing this kid up for anything unreservable so no "final decision" has been made? So I don't see what point you were making there. They don't need to wait to fulfill the basic wishes of the child, how controversial they gave him a haircut and let him wear masculine clothing!

I'm not being negative or hateful. But is there not such thing as being a "tomboy" anymore? I went through a phase when I was around age 8 where I wore boy clothes, high top shoes and wore a hat for a few years. I played with boy things and liked basketball a lot. But I grew out of that and I'm now as girly as they come. Liking fashion, makeup, jewelry etc. Your mind is not developed and a child is very easily influenced in adolescence. I just think it's a bit crazy to label your child as transgendered when that may not be the case at all. It could just be a phase. That's why we make choices for our children because their minds aren't ready and cannot make quality choices. Supporting them wearing the opposite sex attire is one thing but labeling them as transgendered is something totally different. I would have been pretty upset with my parents if they labeled my stage of wearing boy clothes as being trans. I was an unsure adolescent that had to develop into who I am today. I just don't understand why parents are jumping to this conclusion so quickly when children can't make quality, logical decisions yet.

You seem to be missing the all important fact - this is not a "decision". It's just a fact.
Children self-identify by gender at a very young age - as early as two or three (that fact is reaffirmed by the doctor in the vid). And if this child is too young to know that he's a boy the same must hold true for every other child he goes to school with. The boy that sits behind him? To young to know. The girl that sits in the next row? Too young to know. The rest of the kids in his karate class? Too young to know.
And I don't see this as the parents "introducing the idea" but rather accepting the situation for what it is. They don''t have three daughters. They have two daughters and a son.

I was the same way. I wore boy clothes, played with a lot of boy toys (girl toys too, though), played with mostly boys. I was jealous of my boy friends who didn't have to wear a shirt outside. Sometimes kids who didn't know me would ask me if I was a boy or a girl. And do you know what my answer was? "I'm a girl." That's the difference. I was fine with being a girl, I identified as a girl. I never actually wanted to BE a boy.

I heard of a situation similar to this.
So a family who had a son, later had a daughter with special needs. As such, she needed alot more attention from her parents. Now this boy, between the ages of 3-5 started to play with girls toys and befriend girls and began saying he was a girl.
Now the parents took him to a therapist, and the boy said "Mum and dad don't love me when I'm a boy"
This boy developed the misconception that he was female because his sister got more attention, and so he tried to be female too.
The boy after therapy is fine now.
I'm not saying gender disforia doesn't exist, I am saying 5 years old is too young to make decision to change your gender.
Also, my sister loves trucks, cars, has built computers and plays games, watches violent movies, and plays football all supposedly male hobbies but she never thought "I'm a boy because I like these things" the misconception that boy toys and girl toys, are taught by parents and media.

I also used to like football and all sort of boys games but my mama really whipped me up and i stopped. I believe the parents encourage their kids to change their genders whereas kids don't even know what is to be a boy or a girl. Kids will always speak and talk i want these, i want that but a parent should take it as normal and with time, they will change their talk and indulge into other activities and they will forget what they used to talk but, never should they encourage them to follow the steps they want while they grow. ...but there is an assertion that single mothers contribute to more issues with children compared with '2 parent' households.

when I was around 4..I told everyone I was a boy and wanted to be called scott...the reason behind that was my cousins ( male ) always got more attention from my grand parents than my sisters and I. I thought I had to be a boy to be special.

Because therapists do what’s called affirmative care. That means if the child says they are a boy, you go with it and socially transition them.

So while taking a kid to a therapist sounds like the answer, it’s the therapists who are responsible for kids transitioning. In many states, it is illegal to not provide affirmative care.

This is not because she oppressed me but simply because she realized I didn't have enough of an understanding of the world to make choices like when to cross the road and what to wear. That is what this child needs, a parent not a door mat.

True - somewhere along the line they'll have to consider hormone blockers but all those will do is delay puberty. Completely reversible - stop taking them and puberty restarts. That gives him (as well as his parents and his team of doctors) additional time (years actually) to decide how to proceed.
It would not be an appropriate age at all to prescribe hormone therapy for this boy. That happens in adolescence where pubertal developmental occurs. And he is choosing to dress as a boy because he is a boy. Simple as that.
Nobody is pushing hormones on this boy. He's simply being allowed to live his own life. Hormone blockers won't be prescribed until he nears puberty and cross sex hormones won't be administered until he's somewhere in his teens. And then only if he (and his parents and the team of doctors that will have been monitoring him all along) is in agreement

You don’t know what was going on at the previous school, for some reason it was better to change schools for this child. They were proud of their son and out as a trans family, this, to me, indicates the change couldn’t be successfully accomplished within the confines of the old school. To me they aren’t making sure people know Jacob was assigned a female gender at birth but that Jacob is transgender. Transgender being an identity too.

But they didn't realize he was being influenced by someone else and later in life he realized he wasn't a woman and hated what he had done to himself.

I worked with 5-year olds. At that age, their sense of gender and sexual identity is somewhat fluid. So are their personal boundaries. This is why they need guidance. It's called parenting. You do not let a toddler or child make major life decisions. This is absurd.
Turning that fluidity into a solid brick without considering anything else is also not helpful.

now... his parents are allowing him to live as the gender he is/"wants to be", they are not giving him hormones or even changing his sex with surgery (hes 5, that isnt even legal). However, even if it turns out to have been a phase, he will have been happy in his childhood and thats what matters. If his parents decide to give him puberty blockers later on, that only stops puberty, it doesnt affect anything else and it is completely reversible. Experiencing gender dysphoria and not being able to be who you want to be as a child can have seriously bad influence on your future as far as mental health goes. So please shut up about him being "too young"
