The "accent-tap" on the hi-hat is the KEY to why Phil Rudd is such a groovy, rock-solid drummer. If you just play straight taps, the beat sounds very stiff and mechanical. Phil also leaves his hi hat slightly more open than most drummers, which gives the beat a more fluid, swinging feel. The man is a god of the 4/4 backbeat. Not flashy obviously, but accurate as a metronome. He's just amazing.
Are you kidding me?! He is a fucking machine, keeping fast upbeat rhythm for 10 minutes straight is just as difficult as doing complex fills. He is a perfect, rock solid drummer, and a great timekeeper.
THANK YOU!! I was always wondering what he was doing differently. Every other cover of Phil always sounds like there's something missing. I know this video was posted 5 years ago, but if you get this, can you do a video with a faster tempo of his playing like Shoot to Thrill?
It takes skill to play in good time, which Rudd does, he backs up the band perfectly. A basic beat is all a drummer really needs to hold a song together, but adding creativity and technicality can help make it better to an extent. But thats not what its all about, being flashy, sometimes its about knowing restraint and being a solid, rhythmic member. You don't need to be Neil Peart to be a good drummer.
Great lesson thanks! I saw the BellRays live a long time ago, they had a great drummer, but when they covered Highway to Hell, he couldn't make it sound good. That shows you how an amazing drummer Phil Rudd is.
yes, that is something most people don't know about Phil is that he often has the kick just playing quarters through the whole song.He drives and pushes it with Mal and Cliff. Listen and see him do Sin City live at Rock Goes To College
To me Rudd's right hand is marking the four beats of the bar. My guess is it was not a conscious decision to do the accents but pure feel that went back to the 4 even beats that Australian pub rock audiences demanded. In the early years in Sydney and around Australia, ACDC played literally hundreds of gigs a year of four on the floor, night after night. I reckon it just felt right to him, he got the audience reacting and developed that approach from years of playing live. Maybe I'm wrong, but that's what my feeling is, based on how we do pub rock.
Hi redoom333, Dominic uses Premier (Genista birch), and they are made from England. Although, they do not make that line anymore. If you want to see more of Dominic's lessons, be sure to check out our website.
But nobody plays em like Phil Rudd and they are not all as simple as you might think. He plays 16ths with accents, which many cannot do without making a mess. Learn to play well with a metronome before anything else.
If you really want to understand Phil's playing, you should watch Andi Rohde's video on this topic. He really got to the essence of Phil's way to play, his Groove and his mindset.
When I play this song, during the fill, I always end up doing the last 2 hits on the snare right-left instead of left-right like you play it, so when the stick in my left hand hits the snare my righthand is already on it's way to the cymbal. It doesn't really matter how you play it but for some reason it's easier for me.
On the first drumming at the beginning of the video you played the kick together with the snare, but you did not played like this on the other drumming in the video, i heard phil rudd plays kick drum with snare on some songs, please point wich songs and why
Accents with shoulder - ok. But not on the edge. To avoid unneeded motion hit the surface of the hihat more horizontal. That gives bigger sound and reduces wastage of stick. Motion? - since you do not need to go under a (thought) horizontal line, Your arm has not to be lowerd and raised again more than neccessary. The change between tip and shoulder does the job very well. Only this way You will be able to get to very high speed and do that for a long time.
you can pick some premier genista birch at my store in romania. I order them from someone from indonisia he is not a premier employee but a buisness man that works with them . I got two genista birches left ( the shells are wraped and the colours are white and blue ) i oredered 6 5 pieces about 8 months ago from this guy. they sound wonderfull but like i said the quality is NOT EVEN CLOSE to what premier did in the 80's and early 90' , mainly because the drums are not made in englad anymore.
Love the RUclips comments. Angus could literally have any drummer in the civilised world. Yet he always goes back to rudd. These pricks think they can put down a legend like rudd who has sold over 200 million albums. Have fun playing your local bar chumps
I know my comment seems rude and over the top, but it was more light-hearted and sardonic than anything. As you said there has to be a proper perspective in order to differentiate between favorite and best. I loved AC/DC for years, but never did I think to myself, dear God this Rudd character is off the hook and impossible to copy. I grew up teaching myself to play Rush, Zeppelin and bands like that on drums, so to say Rudd is one of the best ever is simply silly to me.
Can you make the same, but like "this is why chris slade sucks at playing ac/dc". He ain't got that groove and especialli HH technique (not mentioning hés too fast ) thx ! ;-)
Only cover I have ever found with the drummer keeping the beat was godsmacks highway to hell...and it still wasn't quite up to par with Phill. Phill is a machine. I love Neal peart and the countless other greats but no one can fill Phill's shoes...no pun intended ;)
maybe toy play drums but to be a drummer is something diferent, thats way some people even they play drums are complety far from knowing what is the art to play a simple drum line whit the swing it needs ,im sure you cant play the way phil does.
It is not so thrue.... Phil close hi hat at begining and open at the refrein so you hear 8 notes clearlly. most rock drummer do that you hear most 1 and 3 beat on the hi hat. Phil plays very fast 8 notes too Let there be rock live.
not a fan of Rudd at all, very over-rated drummer, BUT...the band sound is all about a simple backbeat. Many drummers wouldn't be happy playing so simple. But let's face it Rudd's fans don't really know much about drumming. I don't know of any professional drummers that think much of Rudd other than he is a good time keeper and suits the bands style style.
@@toddlavigne6441 Better than being a bad time keeper and not suiting the the bands style wouldn't you say?......I honestly can't believe you just posted that. I bet you think Richie Starkey is shit too eh?.......you're musically immature.
It's not about what Phil plays. It's HOW he plays it. He has this unique fat lazy groove that hardly any drummer can play the way it should be. Chris Slade can't play it either.
look man, i really do like his style, but i honestly think he's nothing special. i can play any song of his without any sort of difficulty, despite the speed. it's really just KSKS in common time with light taps on the upbeat...pretty much all the time. there is no subtlety other than the upbeat and absolutely no straying from the beat. i don't even think i've ever even heard him utilize straight triplets. he was doing exactly what every punk drummer was doing, just slower.
Even Phil Rudd doesn't give a sh#@ about this simple drum beat. Nothing special or difficult about it and void of any meaningful technique. The guy breaking this beat down has a good heart for what he's doing, but he should choose something a bit more engaging to analyse.
bicklesby1 is that a jutting forehead I see in your image? Proof that Cro-Magnon man survived the last ice age to re-emerge as the distinct species that he is. Thick skull with a small brain cavity and not much ability for abstract thought. I teach by lecture and not by video.

Kate Lynn so you seem to ignore his pathetic "fukface" comment. I am not sure that his sloping forehead is a "flaw", however his propensity for ignorance is vividly self present. He articulates his point of view similar to Phil Rudd's drumming. Simply a lot of thumping noises. I am glad however that you seem to care for the poor and wretched! Good for you! Really!
The Pepster very true! Last year Modern Drummer released its "Top Fifty Drummers of all Time"...... Phill Rudd didn't make it! I have been to loads of drum clinics to watch some of the worlds greatest drummers and percussionists explain their technique and influences. Not one time ever has any other major drummer I've seen said Phil Rudd influenced them. David Letterman featured some of the world's top drummers to perform solos on his show.... no Phil Rudd! The point is this.... Phil Rudd is a very solid rock drummer for AC/DC. That's where it ends!!
Agreed, and interestingly the rest of the band has very basic skills. Same chord progressions in every song. wouldn't be surprised if they used "A-C-D-C" as a progression, considering how lazy they are. Still make straight rock music though which is good
The Pepster You are spot on! They did define an era and genre of music that was signature to them. You know it when you hear it! Repetition is not a bad thing for the most part. After all, McDonalds has made billions of the same hamburger and there are people who think they are the greatest thing going! Stay wise my friend!
+The Pester Sounds like you do not understand what Rock music is. Rock music drumming is not about showing off. It's about serving the song and being the foundation which is a lost art.
