Same for me during my teens, except I had their earlier albums on repeat. This was probably the first band that taught me what musical arrangement and composition was. I had never heard anything like it before, and I spent many a night in my bed room in low light tumbling deeper and deeper down the rabbit hole with their music.
If you do Progenies live, you should absolutely do an older version like 2004 at Ozzfest (which is also easily available on youtube) rather than a newer one like Forces of the Northern Night (or just do both!). As you heard from the studio version, Vortex is the star of the show, and it's also one of Mustis's best compositions (both of whom are no longer in Dimmu, sadly) so a version that has both of them performing would be great to see. It's funny too, in the Northern Nights show they had a full choire doing Vortex's part and it was still not nearly as amazing as the original. Great video as always Kaiya!
Came upon Dimmu in 2007 with their release “In Sorte Diaboli” then I went all the way back through their discography and have been a fan since. Their 1999-2010 lineup is absolutely untouchable.
For a Tid and Stormblast original recording will be always classics. I enjoy the actual orchestra that Dimmu Borgir uses in their songs and live performances , not my favorite stuff but I respect it. I wouldn’t mind seeing Dimmu Borgir live if they ever come to Los Angeles.
Damn it, why didn't the recommendations include Mourning Palace or Kings of the Carnival Creation D: Both are pretty insane and I would have placed over Gateways since it's like, something standalone and she was a guest singer cuz no Vortex. Anyway, this band was my introduction to extreme metal (first one with predominantly growls) and I will always appreciate them for that, but bands like Emperor (with their Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk album) and Limbonic Art (with the album Moon in the Scorpio) blew them out of the water for me in symphonic black metal, the atmosphere and compositions in those are just something else, genius and timeless (kinda resembling Epica's). Whereas Dimmu feels like they bring/add the blackened influence into symphonic metal, for those two other bands black metal and symphonic metal are blended as if one whole, to perfection
Man hearing Dimmu again takes me back to time where Black Metal and in this case Symphonic Black Metal was (imo) at it's peak. You should have a listen to Nile's Annihilation Of The Wicked album this was around the same time period as Progenies Of The Great Apocalypse. The self titled track Annihilation Of The Wicked is a fucken banger, Mosh on people!.

You finally did Dimmu Borgir! I knew you would like it, great video! I think symphonic metal is where it's at. You've done symphonic deathcore with Lorna Shore, symphonic power metal with Epica, and symphonic black metal with Dimmu. Next should be symphonic death metal with SepticFlesh or Fleshgod Apocalypse. Or go symphonic avante garde breakcore with the band Igorrr.

My top 2 are "The Insight and the Catharsis" and "Hybrid Stigmata". Both have majestic clean singing by ICS Vortex (he's no longer with them), legendary drumming, and fast riffing!! Highly recommend!!! 🤘 Every album is a different style!
A few Dimmu Borgir songs that doesn't get as much of a mention but still holds up: Dreamside Dominions, Grotesquery Conceiled (Within Measureless Magic), In Death's Embrace, Prudence Fall, Entrance, Master of Disharmony.
I have a special fondness for 2 albums : ,,Spiritual Black Dimnensions" and " Puritanical Euphoric Misatrophia" ( unfortunately you haven't played any of these masterpieces today). The first one started my musical adventure with DB over 22 years ago, and the second one started the new millennium in the most exquisite style.
I could not agree any better with you. These two records are their peak, both conceiving unrivaled atmosphere, each a little different - cosmic and vastness in SBD and cold, crystal lake in PEM...
and as i mentioned before, if you like symphonic stuff i can definitely recommend the band haggard, the band is a full orchestra, and yet it's kind of heavy like epica
I am so happy you reacted and reviewed DB. Definitely gives you nice exposure to one of the best in epic, symphonic Black Metal (along with Cradle of Filth and Carach Angren). Definitely recommend Dimmu's older material as well like Spellbound by the Devil and Reptile. I loved your great input and lovely reactions. You need to also react to Satyricon too. Sending much love for you Kaiya!! 🌹🌹❤️❤️❤️❤️
This year was the only time they played with a full orchestra and choir. They did this in Oslo (Gateways was from that show) and also at Wacken that year. So only two shows. I was at the Oslo show. It was truly amazing. Dimmu Borgir are sometimes referred to as the dark brother of Nightwish (a symphonic metal band more in the lines of Epica). Their current singer, Floor Jansen, is something else.
In Deaths Embrace is my favorite song by them, but there are so many good ones. Like others said, check out Insight and the Catharsis. It's a musical masterpiece. Or also The Promised Future Aeons, Arcane Life Force Mysteria, Kings of the Carnival Creation, and Dreamside Dominions.
These dudes were my first taste of black metal which led me down the rabbit hole of origins like mayhem, genuinely interesting history within this genre, will love it forever
Dimmu Borgir is one of my top 2 favorite metal bands (Enonian is my favorite album by Dimmu Borgir); Dio is one of my other top 2 favorite metal bands (first 6 albums on SHM-CD; 2020 Remasters); thirdly I like The Black Capes (CD's) or Dawn of Ashes or Psyclon Nine
Good one! I love your perspective on metal, coming from other genres. Great how you can appreciate musicianship and different musical qualities, open minded. Pls. continue. 🙂Cya in the Moshpit.
oh and Enthrone Darkness is their best album really. That album was put them on international map probably because the record was released on Nuclear Blast, and they finally started to tour the US in late 90s, as far as I know. I personally, never recall seeing the band live, and I wouldn't care to now.
Great video! I haven't really listened to them much as I have to be in the right mood for anything symphonic, but I can attest that "Gateways", especially that video, is badass.
if you enjoyed what you listened to here i'd highly recommend their songs Vredesbryd, Kings of the Carnival Creation, and In Deaths Embrace. And the entire Stormblast album OFC!
Yes, to answer your question, yes they do this live... and its KFNGGG AMAZING!!!!!! I recommend watching and reacting to their live concert Forces of The Northern Lights
3 more great Dimmu Borgir songs: Burn In Hell, Mourning Palace, and Kings of the Carnival Creation. It was great watching you react to one of my favorite bands for the first time.
Dimmu Borgir, Gorgoroth, Satyricon, Mayhem and other Norwegian 90's metal bands used to hang at all the same pubs/bars in Oslo. Bumped into them more than once, the folks in Dimmu Borgir were always really cool and down to earth listening to Barbie Girl and having a laugh whilst some of the other bands would be the super-pretentious "I only listen to metal and never laugh" type. Their approach-ability made me like them a lot more than the other bands, and I appreciate being able to hear the lyrics. Puritania and their cover of Burn in Hell are the songs that got me into them, along with The Serpentine Offering and Progencies'. I feel like Epica is the soundtrack to Skyrim and Dimmu Borgir the soundtrack to Fallout.
Dark Fortress morphed into a symphonic metal band over time, the early releases were much more straightforward. I believe one of the early keyboardist was Dana from the all-female death metal band "Mythic" , and her contributions tended to be more of the drone and ambient sort. I forget whether she actually sang melodic vocals or not, I don't think so. several lineup changes led to differences in the core of the writing., with the band's subsequent keyboardist,, "Mustis" being a brilliant classical pianoist and his influence is all over the band's symphonic stylistic change. Somewhere on RUclips is a video of him in a practice room playing "Progenies of the Great Apocalypse" alone on solo classical piano and it is spellbinding. this band catches a lot of shit for actually being commercially viable, and their albums have sold very very well.. but they do have Roots going back to the earliest second wave of Norwegian black metal and those are pretty solid roots. of course black metal is a highly divisive and nitpicky genre with many self-proclaimed Arbiters of what is and isn't "TRVE" ( Not mispelled) on the scene. Largely all horseshit opinions when what it comes down to is if you like the music or not.. as opposed to whether the band is super obscure and has only recorded a four song demo on a boom box or perhaps a potato.. only to bury it in someone's backyard instead of releasing it outright. Yeah, that kind of mentality actually exists within the scene, the more obscure ...the more valid somehow the releases are. Lame. As for this band, guess who a MAJOR influence was from the very start? Yep...KING DIAMOND.
I'm glad you liked Dimmu Borgir, and yep their are similar to Epica, but DB is older so Epica probably took some inspiration from them. But also their are their own wave 'cause they have their foundations on Black Metal which is a complete different movement of metal, with that shriek vocals, dark oppressive and atmospherical sound that they use in some parts (also this is the kind of metal with black and white make up or corpse paint and "satanic" stuff)
Another thing, even though DB is considered as a Symphonic "Black Metal" band, they actually are way, way, way more melodic and more pleasant to hear than most of real Black Metal bands (IMO) because those bands are pure aggressive, raw and extreme sound, if you hear real Black Metal bands as Mayhem, Emperor, Gorgoroth, Dark Throne, Burzum or Dark Funeral you will notice the difference (not my fav style but I like some of them)
I saw Dimmu Borgir live 2003 and 2007 in the states. Had a ball !! When I discover an older band I want to listen to their early material first, so check out albums For All Tid, Stormblast, Enthrone Darkness Triumpant.
2:50 that's a phaser or a flanger. Whenever an audio signal is slightly out of phase you'll get that effect. Whenever two sound waves (the left and right signal in a stereo signal) are out of phase, there will be zero sound because the sound waves cancel each other out. When a signal is close to being out of phase, but not completely, you get that effect. Usually you don't want this effect while producing music, because it sounds weird and it weakens the signal (making the mix less impactful), but there are plugins and guitar pedals that can do this effect in real-time, as it is sometimes desirable.
got into Dimmu around the time Dimebag Darrell was Shot and killed on stage.. which I had December Tickets to see Damage plan's Cali show and was heart broken to know i wasn't going to see Dimebag perform ever.. this band really came through when I needed it..
and I have to add... Dimmu Borgir live is by far 1 of my favorite performances by any band ever.. they sound exactly like the album.. even this song... though sounds muddy depending on how they uploaded it or the version of the song used.. but live omg sounds exactly how you wanted it to sound..
If you want to see some american Symphonic Metal I think the currently most interesting band is Seven Spires. I'd reccomend the songs This God is Dead ft Roy Khan which IMO is their best work to this point, Gods of Debauchery(do the music video for this one, it's great) and The Cursed Muse all from their newest album. Their female vocalist Adrienne has an air of destiny around her, like Simone from Epica or Floor from Nightwish. Also pretty please do a Part 2 for Epica!
Good band, good video, I like their older stuff better but this is good, as someone else mentioned if you liked this you need to check out Septic Flesh and Emperor. In case you considerer doing more Dimmu Borgir songs like Spellbound (by the Devil), Mourning Palace, Moonchild Domain, Chaos Without Prophecy or The Insight and the Catharsis would be great.
Watching this makes me curious about how you'd respond to Igorrr - Le Petite Moineau. The primary vocalist weaves between Opera and distortions with the musical backdrop of metal guitar and chaotic synth, etc. Skip looking for lyrics because it's a newly constructed tongue. They're very restricted on how often they go all out. Rammstein only does the big production shows.
If you wanna try some sci-fi-themed melodic symphonic death/industrial metal, you could check out Mechina. Their songs are all part of telling some kind of wacky edgy sci-fi story of theirs, they've got a lot of interesting sounds, digital stuff, voice effects, and both clean and harsh female vocals. Only problem is, a lot ff their songs are really long. Some recommendations are: Phedra (Xenon) - Dark, heavy, dramatic. Zoticus (Xenon) - Uplifting, romantic, prominent digital sounds, clean male vocals. Cryoshock (Progenitor) - Droning, sharp, dramatic clean female vocals. When Virtue Meets Steel (Venator) - This is probably their coolest song IMO, kind of a must-hear.
Thank you!! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻 It's one of my favorites. If that old hag at the gym tells me to put a shirt on again this is the one I'm picking 😏 I'm in love with it.
I got to see Dimmu live in 2008 and it was such a good concert (they didn't have the big ass orchestra though) and also before Vortex and Mustis left... good times!
You must listen to the version from Forces of the Northern Light - live with the Norwegian Radio orchestra and choir. From the same concert as Gateways. Also Kings of the Carnival Creation.
Yes they do do this Live, which is why you should have picked the Live version with the full orchestra. Unfortunately the guy who did the clean vocals part left the band about 14 years ago. So they are sung by a female now.
Great video! My favorite black metal band. You shpuld check the track "Blessings Upon The Throne of Tyranny", and also check out tje guitarists side project Old Man's Child. Very amazing, too. Great video!
Foreshadowing furnace on the in sorte diaboli album and the on the puritanical album blessings upon the throne of tyranny but both albums are arguably 2 of the best from them
I saw them in 2008. Back then it was just 6 band members on stage. And more like your typical bar metal show. But since 2010, they gravitated more toward cinematic and less Black metal. I still love the band. But my choice albums are Enthrone Darkness Triumphant, Spiritual Black Dimensions, Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropy, and Stormblast 2005.
If you liked this then you'll probably enjoy Carach Angren as well, not to mention Emperor. I saw someone mention Nightbringer further down. I'd say all of Naas Alcameth's bands are worth checking out: Nightbringer, Akhlys, Bestia Arcana and Aoratos. Hell, while I'm at it, why not plug another band that hardly ever gets attention: Absu, or Proscriptor McGovern's Apsû as they're called now.
Their Vortex, Mustis, Barker lineup was the best
Exactly. Nick Barker is such an underrated drummer, especially on RUclips.
As much as I love Nick, Hellhammer will always be my favorite drummer. Can't wait for more Arcturus
Those three together made the band wayyy bigger than the sum of the parts. I've always suspected Shag was a bit insecure about that. Anyway, the impact of those special three is even more obvious now since Dimmu has not been able to recreate this kind of magic since firing them.

But also their are their own wave 'cause they have their foundations on Black Metal which is a complete different movement of metal, with that shriek vocals, dark oppressive and atmospherical sound that they use in some parts (also this is the kind of metal with black and white make up or corpse paint and "satanic" stuff)
Another thing, even though DB is considered as a Symphonic "Black Metal" band, they actually are way, way, way more melodic and more pleasant to hear than most of real Black Metal bands (IMO) because those bands are pure aggressive, raw and extreme sound, if you hear real Black Metal bands as Mayhem, Emperor, Gorgoroth, Dark Throne, Burzum or Dark Funeral you will notice the difference (not my fav style but I like some of them)
I'd say Burzum can be pretty chill too, the Filosofem album is mostly what I'd call atmospheric black metal.
Emperor are the better dimmu borgir, compositionally that is
They were symphonic black metal until Spiritual black dimensions then for PEM they changed to extreme symphonic metal.
My favorite black metal band since high school
I saw Dimmu Borgir live 2003 and 2007 in the states. Had a ball !!
When I discover an older band I want to listen to their early material first, so check out albums For All Tid, Stormblast, Enthrone Darkness Triumpant.
I had the chance to see them live. Epic
Yes that is a flanger on the vocals
Hello beautiful kaiya so many but spellbound by the devil for sure your gonna love dimmu
This is gonna be sweet thank you kaiya
got into Dimmu around the time Dimebag Darrell was Shot and killed on stage.. which I had December Tickets to see Damage plan's Cali show and was heart broken to know i wasn't going to see Dimebag perform ever.. this band really came through when I needed it..
and I have to add... Dimmu Borgir live is by far 1 of my favorite performances by any band ever.. they sound exactly like the album.. even this song... though sounds muddy depending on how they uploaded it or the version of the song used.. but live omg sounds exactly how you wanted it to sound..
Yep. They actually did this song live at Oz fest & it was awesome.🤙
37:00 that voice crack is intentional to add that "crying" and "desperate" feel to it.
Majestic Sound for the King of the World, SATAAAN!
7:21 saw them live once when that album was still young, and yes, they did use that live 🤘
Saw them on 07 with Behemoth. Such a sic show!!!!
In case you considerer doing more Dimmu Borgir songs like Spellbound (by the Devil), Mourning Palace, Moonchild Domain, Chaos Without Prophecy or The Insight and the Catharsis would be great.
i only listen to the old dimmu borgir...the first 6 albums...those are the best
The best of Dimmu, the albums Enthrone and Spiritual
You need to check out DIR EN GREY!
The greatest symphonic metal band ever🤘
Watching this makes me curious about how you'd respond to Igorrr - Le Petite Moineau. The primary vocalist weaves between Opera and distortions with the musical backdrop of metal guitar and chaotic synth, etc. Skip looking for lyrics because it's a newly constructed tongue.
They're very restricted on how often they go all out. Rammstein only does the big production shows.
Good shout - Igorrr is a hell of a trip.
Some recommendations are:
Phedra (Xenon) - Dark, heavy, dramatic.
Zoticus (Xenon) - Uplifting, romantic, prominent digital sounds, clean male vocals.
Cryoshock (Progenitor) - Droning, sharp, dramatic clean female vocals.
When Virtue Meets Steel (Venator) - This is probably their coolest song IMO, kind of a must-hear.
Just fyi: it's pronounced Dimmu "Bor-gear" ☺️
Thank you!! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻😭 sometimes these metal bands are hard to pronounce lol.
@@imaKaiya yes, particularly the ones who do not have an English name 😅
Shagrath says it at 28:17
...or you can try "Doomed Burger" to keep things light 🙂
Just fyi. It's not pronounced like gear. The g is hard, yes, but the i is like the E in evil. Source: It's my mother tongue.
you would be even more blown away if you watch the LIVE version of this song
I just love how the look of disgust when listening to metal is confirmation that they love it lmao.
Symphonic black metal is the only kind of black metal I can get into...I love Carach Angren and Limbonic Art too
Dimmu Borgir ist einefach nur Der Hammer!
Besitze alle Scheiben dieser absulut genialen Band. Live einfach ein Mega Kracher.
Check out Old man's child, Galder who is one of the guitarist for Dimmu writes and plays all the instruments on the albums and it's amazing
These were the best songs to choose, good job! I finally got around to watching this! Yay!
The amazing Vortex. 6' 8" and huge lungs that never seem to run out of power.
The male-female callback in Gateways is such an emotional moment. Symphonic Black Metal man.
Thank you for wearing the CC Shirt
Thank you!! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻 It's one of my favorites. If that old hag at the gym tells me to put a shirt on again this is the one I'm picking 😏 I'm in love with it.
@@imaKaiya Proud of ya girl!!
Please check out Dimmu Borgir - Arcane Lifeforce Mysteria and Dimmu Borgir - Succubus In Rapture! Cheers! Thank You!
I got to see Dimmu live in 2008 and it was such a good concert (they didn't have the big ass orchestra though) and also before Vortex and Mustis left... good times!
enthrone darkness triumphant is one of my favorite albums of all time
You must listen to the version from Forces of the Northern Light - live with the Norwegian Radio orchestra and choir. From the same concert as Gateways. Also Kings of the Carnival Creation.
no, they have pre recorded stuff for most of the shows.. and no the lady is not part of the band, she sings in a Norwegian electro pop band I think
Foreshadowing furnace on the in sorte diaboli album and the on the puritanical album blessings upon the throne of tyranny but both albums are arguably 2 of the best from them
Favorite song spellbound
Advent Sorrow - Skin to Suffer in
Advent Sorrow - Pestilence Shall Come
Absurd - Pesttanz
Absurd - Massenmordlust
I saw them in 2008. Back then it was just 6 band members on stage. And more like your typical bar metal show. But since 2010, they gravitated more toward cinematic and less Black metal. I still love the band. But my choice albums are Enthrone Darkness Triumphant, Spiritual Black Dimensions, Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropy, and Stormblast 2005.
If you like this, you might like Ex Deo. They're symphonic death metal all about ancient Rome.
Diggin the "Tomb" shirt. :D
