Personnel:
Fred Schneider - vocals, keyboards, glockenspiel, various toys
Cindy Wilson - vocals, percussion
Ricky Wilson - guitar
Kate Pierson - vocals, keyboards, bass
Keith Strickland - drums
Summary:
This is a terrific document of the group shortly after the 2nd album release. They play the 2nd album in it's entirety as well as most of the first album. It's b&w, but well lit, good audio and every second of it is here. The original lineup (they look so young!) bursting with creativity on their first tour as headliners.
Fred: "watch out for that pirhana!"
Cindy: "oh shit."
best rock lobster ever
😂
Ricky Wilson's guitar is 80% of the magic here, you never see anyone play his style correctly. B52's are untouchable because of their unique sound
The band was great after Ricky passed, but it was NEVER the same. His guitar playing was epic.
Ricky on guitar & Keith on drums. such energy.
I agree but I think you can't discard the keyboard. I don't think the guitar sound he was going for would have worked without the keyboard.
I also imagine on a personal level losing someone like the way they lost him just takes something out of you on a personal level.
Take the bottom two strings off the guitar. Tune the D string down to C, the G down to F, the B down to the next F, and the E UP to F 😁 Now you have it !
3:14 Cindy's dance is EPIC!!!
RIGHT!!!!! OMG! So much STYLE!
@@ProfRage best thing i've ever seen on the interweb!
Cramps live garbage man
Fred was hitting that gwiddy
Ricky Wilson was the second best surf guitarist of all time after Dick Dale, imo.
Your the only person I've ever seen on RUclips mention Dick Dale. .I've been surfing since 1970....Mr Dale was incredible...thank you for that very valid observation....have a blessed day
@@westwindpaintingDick Dale is a legend
I love how Kate can't wait to finish playing the keyboard parts to start dancing round.
It's not till you see these live videos that you truly realise how incredible Ricky was.
these drums sound killer here omg
Only the drums!!!??...
"Here comes a piranha"
"OH SHIT"
Cannot imagine the energy in that crowd, this is such an insane song
Damn! Keith Strickland is a smoke'n ass drummer!
this has to be the greatest song of all time
i see u everywhere🤣, finally found a dye hard b52s fans like myself
This song has the perfect amount of cowbell ❤
I was thinking exactly the same thing. His restraint was astonishing… and appreciated!
Ricky set up his guitar to play strings of these gauges, according to his guitar tech Keith Bennett:
,058, .056, x x .018p and .018p tuned to CFxxFF. (x = no string in that slot.) The album version's slightly sharper than 440 hz, in 444 or 445 Hz.
(I corrected the comment.)
String Gauges were 2 similarly gauged Low E strings from sets of .13s, and 2 thicker plain strings that would have normally been for a G string slot. I'm guessing that on some nights, he might only have been able to use 2 .056 strings on the bottom. (Ricky was concerned that he'd break a string and the song would fall apart, so he had Bennett change the strings at every gig, or every 2 or 3 gigs, depending on the year.)
His Mosrite guitars had a 24.50" scale length, shorter than a Gibson's 24.75". (Mosrite got their scale length machine from another guitar company, Standel, who used that scale length.)
Mosrite Guitars are a bit of an oddity, having their own scale length and their own pickup designs that generally sound somewhere between a Telecaster Bridge Pickup and a P90.
Ricky also used thick picks, I'm guessing 1mm picks, and a Mesa Boogie Mark II Amplifier. Sadly for some of us, that's a costly amp these days.
EDIT: Changed the plain strings from .026p and .022p to .18p (according to Ricky's Guitar Tech's notes.)
EDIT 2: Added info about his guitar's scale length.
EDIT 3: Added the other guitar company's (Standel's) name.
EDIT 4: Removed my previously incorrect information about Ricky using wildly thick Bass strings on his guitar, which I honestly did think he used since I had experimented with it and I really did think it sounded like him acoustically. Sorry, that was fiction, but I fixed it now.
Yes, I really did try using the previously mentioned .105b and .085b strings on a cheap Epiphone, and they did hold together even at the CFxxFF tuning. I had to make a new nut for the guitar before trying this.
Austin Lucas Note: "p" at the end of those last two string gauges denotes that they're plain strings, not wound strings.
+Austin Lucas Hey thanks Austin. A mate posted this song on Facebook, haven't listened to them in years but totally wowed by Rickys guitar playing on this song, and Private Idaho and in particular 52 Girls which is my new song crush. What you wrote explains a lot - dam he was good and these songs are great. Awesome band, thanks again. Now... off the the geetar shop to buy some bass strings...
+BBBri57 There was an article in a guitar magazine around 1979 or 1980, maybe later, where he talked about the tunings. I haven't read it though.
You will need to modify the nut and saddles on most guitars to get that hybrid setup to work well. Ricky _probably_ didn't have to modify the saddles on his Mosrite guitars because of the saddles' design, (maybe that's a reason why he used them) though the string guide (different design; it had a zero fret) wouldn't have been the right size as it was.
One more detail: Tune the guitar in 445 HZ. I made a guitar tab for this:

I was wondering why it keeps sounding like there's a bass there... You wanna say "where's the bassist?"
Saw them in a high school gymnasium in Binghamtom NY, winter of 1983. That show had this energy, was great! We walked out into the winter night dripping with sweat from dancing.
Geez that song just hits a satisfying groove just after 3:00. Always loved the guitar in this.
I swear I will see the b52 before I die live... I wanna see them live 😆😆
They retired. You missed out. Too bad!
This is my favorite live version of this🦞 it sounds so intense and fun 🤩
40 years ago but still rocks it out!!
I love coming to a video and there are 42 comments. What the heck is wrong with people?! This is classic stuff.
Thank you to the person aiming the camera at Cindy. Keith Bennet is a lucky guy.
Awesome.!!! Best version ever.
Lotta energy on that stage
I loved this so much on XBox Dance 4 game that I went and bought the vinyl record!
Qué pieza más excelente mis respetos
better than the studio album by leaps and bounds. dim lighting, grainy video, but a remarkable snapshot in time!! the b's at their athens, GA best. THE definative..
Agreed. The energy in the 52's first album was up there, but live they simply blew the roof off the place.
Es lo mejor que eh oído y escuchado! Teatral Performa tssss es súper
¡Por supuesto!
Fantástico grupo pura energía Saludos desde Perú
I'd just like to point out that in this song there's more going on in the last few minutes than what appeared to me when I first heard the song. Ricky's playing one or both of the bottom strings along with the top two strings at parts.
+Austin Lucas Yip and check out Private Idaho. Always thought there was a bass player and a guitar player. Total awe. I heard he was a Joni Mitchell fan for her alternate tunings, but never seen anything like the setup he had that you posted are you aware of anyone else using that tuning setup with the middle strings missing? Genius.
I haven't seen anything else quite like Ricky's techniques outside what I was playing around with when I was imitating them. However, if you're going to look into a regular six-string guitar, I did hear some interesting songs by Merle Travis (Country player) as he sounded like two players instead of one, that's a bunch of finger-picking which I like but it's not quite the same as Ricky's technique which involved a pick.
It’s quite challenging to cover!
When they dance so hard haha rules so much
Awesome.!!! Best version ever.
It was a major recording achievement to get this band out on an album with tracks that hardly differ from performances like this.
so freaking good. i love the screams and the noises so much. guitarist is so talented so is the lady singing
The B-52’s rock. You totally see it, here. Great, great, musicianship.👍
bass = joy division # very cool.
The drums are very similar too
This is one of the best performances ever!!!🦞
I’ve never heard a song with this much synth sound so raw.
PURE AWESOME!!!
Not sure who's have more fun with this song, the audience, or the musicians?
unreal
The drummer is the only one doing something "normal" in this song, lol! At the end of the day he's what makes it into a true rock song.
in love
Lotta energy on that stage
anazing, such a talented and eclectic group.
Great energy
2:56 this Cindy's scream is epic! 😮😅
b 52s rock lobster… a classic !!! great song...
My favorite The B-52's song....................... an inmense hug of light from Perú 💋💋💋💋💋❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹☀️⚡😎🌈👍...
I love Cindy’s solo
LEGENDS!!!
The first time i heard this i unashamedly danced my ass off in front of my siblings.all of whom were into r and b and rap.they loved this and danced with me.good times.
Talk about energy! I saw this tour at the Danforth Music Hall in Toronto. That audience made the one in this show look lame. When the 52's started dancing on stage, just before "LET'S ROCK", the building was shaking under my feet! It was an unbelievable "orgasm" of hysteria! I saw the 52's, Gary Neman, and Devo there in the span of a few months. Live music will never approach that again! WOW!
Really cool stuff back in the day !
yup, awesome
BRUTAL B'52....LO MEJOR DE LOS 80'S

My daughter came home tonight with the absolute WORSE SUNBURN! While both my wife, and I were sitting next to her, listening to every second of her agony. I found this song. Played 10 seconds of it, paused it. My wife was laughing hysterically! All the while my daughter, was like????? Why are you laughing!!!??!!??! You’re laughing at me! Let me see what you were watching! “Ok”, I unpaused it, while both of us were rolling! My daughter was like WTF!? I don’t get it! Hahahahahaha! Oh good stuff!

Where are all the rock lobster videos. I'm looking for the one where Cindy is dressed like pebbles. They layed it out on that video.
😹🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻👏💃🕺🎵
3:00ish, and now you can hear and see why John Lennon dug the B52's.
This is Ricky
0:28 - 0:29 Bro?☠️
2:55 yoko performance
not knowing B52's is like missing half yourself
Yoko Ono would have loved this..
She actually did. John and Yoko attended a performance of Rock Lobster and were impressed. This music was right up their alley
