  • This is a DIY video that explains hot to replace the halogen bulb with LED in a Pentair AquaLuminator Swimming Pool Light Bulb. I tried to boil the light to soften the glue, but it didn't work. I ended putting the light in the kitchen oven and it worked just perfectly.

Excellent video - and excellent solution to having to replace $$ manufacturer bulb! I see online that MR16 color/smart LEDs are available - will give that a try on mine next time bulb fails!

This worked perfect. The 20 minutes didn't do it, mine took 40 and didn't melt. One has to be careful when you lock it in the vice you don't crack the lens. Mine also took a slight left, then right twist but it came off. The little short wire would not lock in like yours did. I ended up soldering a wire to that one and adding a connector to make the second pole on the light connect. Anyone doing this, FYI, took me longer to get it apart (40 Mins) than the new bulb install took like 20 minutes. As of 8/2/24, there are places that now sell a color changing bulb, but it wasn't available anywhere. A place in Florida said they were taking orders and it should be in by September. I live in the North East, so by then I'm closing the pool. Good luck to those that do it, it can be done. I also checked the bulb worked by plugging it into the transformer BEFORE I did the seal!!!!

Could you post a picture of the silicon that you used? Just trying to find the correct silicon that would make a nice waterproof seal. And could this be accomplished using a heat gun instead of an oven to loosen up the glue that holds the lens to the housing?

Hi, thanks for the great video. I recently bought a new pentair blub but it won't illuminate. I think the wire to attache the back wiring of the bulb is dead. Do you know what kind of wire I need to get power? And where I can find that wire? Thanks a ton!!!

Hang on..........why is the halogen bulb you pulled out labeled 35W when the Aqualuminator boasts a 200W bulb?????? Was that 35W bulb the original or one you had already replaced? I am trying to figure out how many lumens the original Aqualuminator bulb puts out to compare to LED alternatives and the halogen wattage is very important for this calculation.

35W was the original bulb. I’m not sure mine was advertised as 200w…

Hi Thomas. I tried your method of opening up the bulb and it worked. My pool looked awesome! Brighter and whiter light. The problem I’m currently running into is the epoxy has failed after 1 month 24 7 operation and seemed to leave cracks on the edge of the lens.
Have you found an epoxy that has worked as well as the factory one?

Hi Brian, I just used clear silicone and it worked fine. I thought using silicone would be a better option if you ever have to open it again...

Thanks! I already re-baked the light and have it apart ready to go for tomorrow. I was really hoping to match the factory epoxy, but I’m just going to get over it and use clear silicone as you suggest.
Thank you again for making this video!

Auti G Have you never seen breaking bad? 😂
I used a marine grade epoxy that I thought would be similar to what the manufacturer used.....well it wasn’t. So I had to reheat the light in the oven at 250° for 20 minutes to take it apart again. Good luck!! Keep us updated.

Auti G Nope, wires were fine. If you follow the directions in the video and use a silicone sealant I think you’ll be good 👍

what is that metal thing at 4:24 inside the case? some kind of fuse, or temp sensor, water sensor to kill power if it leaks, etc? there are only 2 wires coming out of the back tho.

I have no idea, probably some kind of temp sensor for protection. But with a LED lamp temp is not an issue. Anyway, just leave it there and replace the lamp.

My power supply shows 15 volts. Will that be a problem for an MR16 labeled 12 volts?

    • @atcaron
      @atcaron  3 года назад +1

There is only one way to find out... Chances are that there is a voltage regulator in the LED.

Beware as this did not work for me! 20 minutes at 250° fahrenheit melted my bulb! Thank god it was an old one but now, I have to buy a brand new one :(.

Was the oven hot before you put it in? You must allow the oven to reach 250°F before you put the part in the oven...
