- External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar addressed a press conference on March 31, where he lashed out at Congress and Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) over the relevance of the Katchatheevu issue. He stated that the public has the right to know how Katchatheevu was given away to Sri Lanka, adding, "Congress & DMK have approached this matter as though they have no responsibility for this."
He also provided important background details regarding the maritime boundary and seizure: "In 1974, India & Sri Lanka concluded an agreement where they drew a maritime boundary, and in drawing the maritime boundary, Katchatheevu was put on the Sri Lankan side." Watch the video to know more.

I’m Sri Lankan and first must say Indians are so lucky to have a prominent politician like Jayashankar!
In everything in this world truth must come out and we must honour the agreed boundaries. International community must give attention to illegal fishing habits of Indian vessels in the territories of the Sri Lankan seas. We have so many problems in our country to resolve and obviously no point wasting more time and effort on something painstakingly agreed by two governments. Most of these decisions are agreed even before we were born.
Please, build awareness of the Thamil Nadu fishermen to respect our innocent fishermen and their livelihoods, we need to fish sustainably in our own ocean and leave some for the future generations.
I hope this will not end up at the international courts in Geneva like how our priests are bringing in a case that history as usual is distorted by the powerful to say lord Buddha is born in India.
Let’s voice for the truth whether we are Sri Lankans, Indians or any other! Truth will and must win. The present generation is different and am sure will want to know the truth.

Sri Lankan fishermen that are from Jaffna, Mullaitivu, and Mannar (who are from the Sri Lankan Tamil Community who speak the Tamil language) districts are agitated by the alleged recurring illegal fishing by their counterparts from India (who are mainly from Tamil Nadu who speak the Tamil language). If Indian fishermen want to fish beyond the India International border, there is no need to cross over to Sri Lanka's territory (country's territory), instead there is plenty of International waters that is south of India that they can fish with no issues maintaining peace with Sri Lanka. Why does India has to disrupt peace with all it's neighbouring countries, and now the latest is with Sri Lanka at a time Sri Lankan-Indian diplomacy has improved. According to a recent news article as of 2024 India still remains unresponsive to the request by Sri Lanka to allow an innocent passage through the Indian Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) for its fishermen to enter the Arabian Sea. Sri Lanka had made this request when President Ranil Wickremesinghe visited India in 2023. The Indian route will help Lankan fishermen cut down the total distance by 400 nautical miles. Currently, they have to take a longer route via Negombo, Dikovita, Beruwala and Matara (areas in Sri Lanka) around the Maldives. Currently, Sri Lankan fishermen get detained by the Indian Coast Guard when they unlawfully enter Indian waters on their way to the Arabian Sea for fishing activities.

But, as I said once the treaty is finalized, it's very difficult to rescind from it without any legitimate reason, otherwise no one will trust us anymore. Maybe we will be able to negotiate back the fishing rights at best.

Somewhere both India and Srilanka had access to this island. Finally India gave it to Srilanka for some treaty agreement. Now reclaim or rescind the treaty may be nearly impossible.
Now the matter became clear to me
If things are developing as a political interests and the solutions would never be faire. Both Sri Lanka and India should respect to their very closed neighbors as we did and continue to live in harmony for ages. These little things with political interests should not damage it at all..

For Mr. Nehru and Mrs. Gandhi Katchthevu is a piece of rock. For Mr. Jaishanker renaming of Arunachal Pradesh in Chinese , the land is with us nothing to worry. For political person it is nothing. The critical part is when Chinese is naming our places in Chinese does the situation necessitate to have a press conference on katchtheevu than Arunachal Pradesh. The Indian fisherman who include those who are from Tamil Nadu create harm to the livelihood of the Sri Lankan Tamil Community Fisherman who live in the areas of Jaffna, Mullaitivu, and Mannar of Sri Lanka.

Brilliant exposure of the recurring Congress stupidity and lies of both the Congress and the DMK by Shri Jaishankarjee. This proves that Congress does not care for India and the Indians. Too many territories were given away by the Congress. This also exposes the wicked double standard of the DMK. DMK supported the Congress in giving away the island and now the DMK is inciting the issue by pretending that they had nothing to do with this.
Matter has been resolved by 1976 by both Indian and SriLankan governments. Now respect the boundaries. Anyone violate the sovereignty may be prosecuted by respective countries.

While everyone talks about Cong 'Ceded', DMK ' Silent' on Katchatheevu , The island's ownership was debatable between Sri Lanka and India from 1920s. Both of the countries were claiming owner ship on the island and fishing rights. Congress stance was that by giving away the claim of owner ship of the island , they thought that it would help improving relations with Sri Lanka, though we did not any thing in return. BJP government did rewrite the boundaries with Bangladesh in exchange for enclaves.
In 2015 under BJP Government, below was the exchange done.
51 Bangladeshi enclaves in India became Indian territory, a total area of 7,110 acres
111 Indian enclaves in Bangladesh became Bangladeshi territory, a total area of 17,161 acres
One can argue , Total area of Katchatheevu is 285 acres , look at the exchange done during BJP government where we lost more than 10,000 acres based on the size if we go by the Katchatheevu argument.
Can our PM Modi , our MEA minister Jaishankar and TN BJP President say that there was no controversy of the island and we gave our internationally accepted land border to Srilanka publicly?
What would have happened if we did not give our claim on ownership of the island , we would be still at logger heads with Srilanka and who knows our current government might have proposed a similar approach with a different bargain .
Every government at one or other stage resolve boundaries through various means.
The only controversial thing is then TN CM Karunanidhi's approach of saying that i am in alignment with your approach but outside in public i won't support. However this is how all the politics is in the current India.

Katchatheevu Island issue must be resolved... All islands must be taken back by India which was gifted earlier. Ex coco island.
Kachchathivu would be closer to India, but it is even closer to Sri Lanka. Why Indian fisherman come to Sri Lanka waters is not because of the Kachchathivu Island. because they destroyed their seas by Bottom trolling & now there are no fish in Indian waters. Until they destroy their seabed, there was no issue of Indian fishermen crossing to Sri Lankan waters.
Honourable Jaishanker conveniently not mentioning almost 1000 Tamil fishermen killed by SL Navy...sad
1974 India had leverage for fishing rights; 1976 was a soldout of Tamil fishermen to Sri Lanka by New Delhi centric power.
BJP need to do to counter the geopolitics in the Indian Ocean or wait for SL to allow another base in katchathivu.

I am hailing from a Palk Bay village and I have done my doctoral thesis on the problem of fishing in Palk Bay.
As you have said the fishing in the Palk Bay is an issue happening from 1921; more particularly after the 1974 and 1976 Indo-Sri Lankan agreements. The harassment on Indian fishermen became intensive after the escalation of ethnic war in Sri Lanka.
I am aware that Kaccha Theevu was given away in a high handed manner as per 1974 agreement. This is condemnable. The rights of fishing in traditional waters and the access to Kaccha Theevu given in 1974 agreement was given up in 1976 agreement. Mrs. Indira Gandhi was Prime Minister.
The documents show that DMK was opposing the 1974 agreement. For example, On 08.10.1973 there was a letter from Prime Minister to Chief Minister Karunanithi that the Indian Foreign Secretary Kewal Singh would meet him in Chennai to discuss about allocating Kaccha Thivu to Sri Lanka. Karunanidhi along with Minister S. Madhavan, went to Delhi and urged Kewal Singh and Prime Minister not to allocate the islet to Sri Lanka. The meeting that you have mentioned in your press meet, held in Delhi on 13.10,1973 is this meeting of Krunanidhi in Delhi. Therefore there is no hiding by DMK as you have wrongly said. When 1976 agreement was made India was under emergency and so no one could oppose the Prime Minister.
As per the RTI reply given by BJP government to Aladi Aruna on 27.10. 2015, Kaccha Theevu was not ceded since it was never demarcated as the territory of India. AS per the agreement of 1974 it went to the side of Sri Lanka. But now you say that the island was ceded in 1974.
This shifting of stand show =s that you are talking about this problem now, because of your vested election interest. Since you are External Affairs Minister, please do all that are possible to get back the traditional fishing rights given in 1974 agreement. Do not make use of our problem for your election advantage.

Scrap the agreement.
The island was part of Sri Lanka from colonial times. The maps and other records were shown to the then Indian govt which agreed it belonged to Sri Lanka. The only reason it matter to TN fisherman is becaue they have cannibalised all sea resources in an unsustainable way bottom trawliing. Sri Lanka does not allow bottom trawliing. Thus, fish resources are carefully managed. Although over 10,000 TN fisherman invade Sri Lankan sea daily because fish is bountyfull here. TN will only invade until their bottom trawling ends up destroying SL sea as well. After that they will not bother. Everyone knows this but BJP is fishing for something else. It wants votes in the southern block for the upcoming elections.
Sri Lankan fishermen that are from Jaffna, Mullaitivu, and Mannar (who are from the Sri Lankan Tamil Community who speak the Tamil language) districts are agitated by the alleged recurring illegal fishing by their counterparts from India (who are mainly from Tamil Nadu who speak the Tamil language). If Indian fishermen want to fish beyond the India International border, there is no need to cross over to Sri Lanka's territory (country's territory), instead there is plenty of International waters that is south of India that they can fish with no issues maintaining peace with Sri Lanka. Why does India has to disrupt peace with all it's neighbouring countries, and now the latest is with Sri Lanka at a time Sri Lankan-Indian diplomacy has improved. According to a recent news article as of 2024 India still remains unresponsive to the request by Sri Lanka to allow an innocent passage through the Indian Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) for its fishermen to enter the Arabian Sea. Sri Lanka had made this request when President Ranil Wickremesinghe visited India in 2023. The Indian route will help Lankan fishermen cut down the total distance by 400 nautical miles. Currently, they have to take a longer route via Negombo, Dikovita, Beruwala and Matara (areas in Sri Lanka) around the Maldives. Currently, Sri Lankan fishermen get detained by the Indian Coast Guard when they unlawfully enter Indian waters on their way to the Arabian Sea for fishing activities.

Now that the EAM having realised that there is a total demand from the Indian community that Katchativu should be got back from Sri Lanka, he should act by requesting the SriLanka Government to return Katchativu, and claim credit to the BJP Government atleast during his tenure.
