Oh, the anticipation of the opening day. When weather works against us it is disheartening but we push on and make the best of it. A day of weather any other day is just that but it certainly stings mote on opening day.
Thats a lot of water in that river and so murky as well makes it harder to lure fish. Congratulations on your trout opening that 2nd trout was just beautiful. Also well done on the slip and save haha
Discoloured water in one of my favourite little streams also, Robbie. Like you, only managed to wrangle a couple - flyfishing with nymphs. Caught a few trees through.

Great stuff Robbie. Next time you come across discoloured water like that, try getting your fly rod out and fish a fly called a squirmy worm under an indicator. You will be amazed how effective a squirmy wormy is on trout in muddy waters.
Hi Robbie thanks for the Great Opening Video. Great viewing and a bit of a laugh. Not sure if I have a tip for you or not. As a sometimes flyfisher for some decades, we learned early to carry our assembled rod by the reel end with the bulk of the rod trailing out the back. mostly to save busted rod tips as we stumbled around slippery rocks, scrub and tight bush. I know the fly rod is longer, but for me it has always been safer for all my rods to be carried in that manner. Thanks again for your showing us your passion.
Thanks so much mate. That is an EXCELLENT idea. I have fished with Rex Hunt a few times and he is a champion at doing that. He always carries his backwards. He tried talking me into it but it feels so unnatural. LOL 🤣🤣🤣
@@robbiefishing Thanks Robbie. My only caution is to do with fly rods. I have lost a tip or two. Only because, having lost the fly, I wound up everything on to the reel. Bugga. Nothing to hold the 4 piece rod together. That might be 2 tips. 😂

Hi Robbie, I’d always thought when the waters dirty or low light you should use dark coloured lures as their silhouette stands out more (maybe that’s why no luck until you used the Gold and black barred hard body lure 🤔) anyways loved your video, keen to see more trout vids coming up 👍🏽
Well, given the conditions even a couple was a good result Robbie. If those first two had had another couple of feet of lure travel you might well have doubled the catch!
Thanks Simon. It is a lot of fun, but unfortunately none of our trout streams are stocked with trout any more so our trout fishing has deteriorated a lot over the years.

Hey Robbie, I went camping and trout fishing at Licola at Macalister river today. The river was quite high at fast flowing, had no luck. Used multiple spinners and minnows, casted in slower water, still nothing. Any tips on trout fishing in fast flowing rivers? Cheers.
G'day mate, from what I've heard it was a slow trout opening for many anglers. My only tip is to keep persevering and don't be afraid to really cranky your retrieve in fast water. You could never reel in a lure too fast for a trout to catch.
@@robbiefishing Thanks Robbie, you're right about the slow start. Had multiple blokes stop by at my campsite trying their luck but nothing. Thanks for the tip mate.
Would chasing up some crickets/hoppers have helped out there, with the murky water? I've rarely hunted troots, but as with all types of fishing, I like to think through things that might work.
I think worms would have been best in the murky water. Trout are quite fussy. Worms don't work well when the water is low and clear because they're not occurring naturally in those conditions. It's a bit the same with crickets and hoppers. They work great when there's a lot of them on the river banks, but at the moment the trout would probably turn their noses up at them.
A small landing net does me wonders for landing trout. If you ever come to Utah USA in the last half of our summer, I can put you on an easy 50 trout a day.
WOW that sounds amazing. Our trout fishing used to be a lot better but there are way too many Greenies in high places with hidden agendas these days. None of our streams have been stocked for many years.

You Robbie you should go to the Murray and fish for massive cod mabye a collaboration with Colby lesko please the collaboration would be the best but you don’t have to.
Thanks mate. It would be fun, but I have to be honest, that type of fishing isn't my thing. I love cod fishing, but I prefer to walk the banks flicking lures at snags catching modest sized cod. Those huge cod that Colby and many others catch take a very long time to catch. Those blokes out in huge hours to catch those fish and I just don't have the patience. Haha I'd rather sit on the bank of the Murray, drown some bait and try to catch a yellowbelly or Silver Perch.

Hi Barry, thanks for the heads up mate. I will try that next time. 👍👍
Haha
I'd rather sit on the bank of the Murray, drown some bait and try to catch a yellowbelly or Silver Perch.
@@robbiefishing that makes a lot of sense all good keep it up
hay Robbie want to go fishing at Horeshoe lagoon with me?
Hi mate, I cannot make any commitments at the moment sorry. If you go, good luck. 👍👍
@@robbiefishing allgood Robbie lovely video 😁👍
G’day robbie, I’m looking to buy a new lightweight rod and reel to throw small lures in streams for trout, I was wondering what you would recommend?
Hi will, you're probably best to pop into your local tackle store and ask them mate. I only really know the gear that I use. I don't even know what other options there are.
I love the rod that I used in this video but I'm not sold on the reel.
@@robbiefishing fair enough, thank you for your advice
Still don't get it as a invasive fish why have a season.😂
Because so many people love them. They're not native to New Zealand either and they worship them over there.
