@@erickburlya9115 but why tho. Seems to me like optical has no perceivable benefit in the context of a foot or so of audio cable lmao. It's sending the exact same data as a wire, just with light refraction instead of electric impulses. Seems like one of those expensive placebo effect sorts of deals.
Right? It is surprising that people are surprised that the optical out is going away. Toslink hasn't been updated since the early 2000s, it is obsolete tech at this point. 2 decades... HDMI can provide much higher audio bandwidth and metadata with ARC and eARC. At best, toslink can only do 5.1 compressed, while HDMI can go up to 7.1 uncompressed with Dolby Audio.
@@Rainoffire fr. I think it's just a marketing thing tbh, people think "a cable that uses light is cool, and I know light is fast so that must mean optical audio is better" When really it's using light to send the exact same signal as a normal wire, just with flashing lights instead of electrical impulses. More points of failure, arguably easier to interfere with, etc. Optical cable only makes sense in cases where low latency across VAST distances is the top priority (see: fiber internet), using it for consumer audio in 2020 is just downright hilarious. The things placebo will do to people I swear. I once saw a dude who would buy CD's, rip them to WAV, "upscale" those WAVs to like 192khz 24-bit, burn them to blu-ray, and play that from his "hi-fi blu ray player" because he insisted it sounded better.
Yoooo you’re a life saver. I totally forgot about the controller method. I would need this for my projector because it also doesn’t have a optical audio port
I would assume it's because TOSLINK / SPDIF doesn't have the bandwidth for lossless 7.1 audio, so this connection is being retired, much the same way other older A/V connections are being retired.
@@JohnGlasscock john I am one of many people that have been unsuccessful when trying to play on 120hz My monitor is more than capable but for some reason when ever I load cold war 120hz option days disable I done everything I can to fix it but still nothing.
It doesn't have optical because that connector is way too old and the new audio standards need a lot more bandwidth. Especially Dolby Atmos. Optical is limited to 5.1 channels normal sound at it's best.
That's no excuse. There are plenty of reasons people would still want an optical output, Sony just wants us to buy their pulse wireless headsets just like Apple did when they removed the headphone jack
I think by February or March, we will have it easily. Would match up with past launch stock situations. PS5 going to release in a few smaller markets in January, such as Indonesia, hopefully that won't impact the availability elsewhere (probably won't).
I have a question: I love my older Marantz home theater, but it only has Optical/Toslink for input. That was fine for my PS4 Pro, but I just got a PS5 today and see it doesn’t have an Optical Out. So I want to convert the PS5’s HDMI to Optical. Wanted to make sure I can use this Astro thing I found in Best Buy?
If you have a modern day home entertainment system do not use optical out just use HDMI that's more channels with it allowing you to have more independent speakers optical out was originally used as a way to get a digital signal out of receivers into things like tape and CD players so you can make a perfect copy of the audio that is playing through the receiver
Why come on here saying it’s a PS5 issue when it’s only an Astro issue. They purposely made adaptors using hdmi 2.0 ports on a $300 headset which makes them literary useless for next gen. The consoles were made for optimized 4k 120 . Why spend $340 on a headset to take that away
I wouldn’t say it’s ONLY and Astro issue as not only Astro use the optical audio ports, I have steelseries and it uses one too so for me it is a huge pain. Not sure why both next gen consoles have decided to axe this port, it’s like the headphone jack with phones!
I didn't realize anyone still used optical outs. Sound quality is lower than HDMI and it's a extra cable to do cable management with. I didn't realize headphones sometimes use optical cable which would be an improvement over the audio cable as long as you're careful not to break it. What is annoying is there are limited USB connections (3 USB A and 1 USB C total). I connected my PS 5 to the PSVR which requires 2 USB A ports and then tried to connect an external HHD but the slower USB A on the front won't accept it. I ended up needing to use the USB C (also on the front) fir my external HHD which looks bad and gets in the way.
You also can simple use the optical connector of your TV and passtrough the digital DTS Signal via HDMI to the TV to the optical port and connect your hardware on this one. I use this easy method since I have the PS5 and works great. No adapters, no additional hardware needed.
@@pgbollwerk It's just a hint thats not nessesary to buy a adapter to get an optical output for the PS5. Also the PS5 actualy dont support higher than DTS5.1 .. so no worrys about optical connection for audio. Output should be set to HDMI device on the PS5 if using the Optical adapter for the A40’s. If you set it to USB like explained in the video, you won’t need the adapter.
Hey, firstly your videos are awesome especially when it comes to me and have not a clue when it comes to tech. And with that being said, even if in connecting to the home theatre system, still have it set to USB Headset and also chat audio? Thanks
Hopefully PS5 pro with have 2.5 Gbps internet port, at least 2 usb c ports and an optical out and a full spec HDMI 2.1 port. Honestly the PS5 I/O really leaves a lot to be desired. I am grateful we got Wi-Fi 6 though.
HDMI is so much better for passing an audio signal. There's a reason option has been dropped and that's because it's obsolete. It's also not hard to buy an adapter, though it may be a problem for legacy products which is understandable. I guess everything is either wireless/ USB or HDMI these days.
@@HerotsLament that's an unfortunate reality of tech advancing, but there's no denying the advantages hdmi ARC or eARC brings with spatial audio. Regardless, this is likely to mean nothing since a receiver can accommodate the setup you have through your TV, instead of through the console. To put it bluntly, you're either happy and keep the gear you have, or get with the times. The HDMI standard isn't going anywhere and is backwards compatible with any gear henceforth. If you don't quite want to do that, just get an adapter. Regardless, if you can afford a home theater system in the thousands and are happy, a relatively cheap adapte is nothing.
@@HerotsLament and do you not have a receiver? Seems strange if you have a home theater and no reciver. I mean, you don't have to plug the audio cable straight into the PlayStation in order for sound to work.

So is there any adapter that supports HDMI 2.1. Most TV's only support stereo when using the optical out as a passthrough. Would be nice not having to buy a whole new receiver that may or may not even work.
John, would you recommend to use any third-party hdmi > optical convertor? I plan to use it with my SoundBlasterX G5 & Beyerdynamic DT990 Pro. I wonder would it still be able to run 120hz..
In my case, I connected the optical audio from the TV to the home theater when playing with both PS3/PS4. It works just fine but I think that it might be a little bit of delay
I have a PS5 and noticed straight away there was no optical output so just use hdmi and then go optical from tv to sound bar, but I will look at getting the adapter at some point as I usually go optical from console to soundbar

@@SilentHillFetishist hdmi carries far more channels then toslink, its obsolete mate sorry. Btw ive never even heard of toslink headphones, ive only seen usb or wireless or 3.5. Wait... there are people who use optical audio output?
Rig 800 wireless headset needs its for bluetooth
@@erickburlya9115 but why tho. Seems to me like optical has no perceivable benefit in the context of a foot or so of audio cable lmao. It's sending the exact same data as a wire, just with light refraction instead of electric impulses. Seems like one of those expensive placebo effect sorts of deals.
@@tituslafrombois1164 dude tbh i dont like either but i spent $150 on the headset and i have to plug in a usb and a optic to use the headset,
I think it's just a marketing thing tbh, people think "a cable that uses light is cool, and I know light is fast so that must mean optical audio is better"
When really it's using light to send the exact same signal as a normal wire, just with flashing lights instead of electrical impulses.
Thank you you helped me out
You can’t do 120hz with the adaptor. I have this and it doesn’t do it. Does 60hz max! and it says on there website it’s capped at 60hz
This is not true

HDMI is the new "Analog Hole" for youtube too. Get a HDMI to CVBS converter and a set-top DVD video recorder.
Why the likes tho? Like some of us who have home theater and wants 5.1 audio. Duhhh
Because I have a nice audio setup and want to use it properly. Speakers don't take HDMI and my AW3225QF monitor doesn't have an audio output.
Good vid but how would you do this on the astro a50 without the adapter?
It doesn't have optical because that connector is way too old and the new audio standards need a lot more bandwidth.
Especially Dolby Atmos.
Optical is limited to 5.1 channels normal sound at it's best.
That's no excuse. There are plenty of reasons people would still want an optical output, Sony just wants us to buy their pulse wireless headsets just like Apple did when they removed the headphone jack
I brought Arctis 7P, you cant use the Astro adapter with HMDI 2.1.
holiday hype is over, ps5 should be in stock heavy in January, I'll finally get mines😭😫
I think by February or March, we will have it easily. Would match up with past launch stock situations. PS5 going to release in a few smaller markets in January, such as Indonesia, hopefully that won't impact the availability elsewhere (probably won't).
I wouldn’t be looking for it before some time next spring. By then they should be in stock

Thanks John. Any gaming monitors you would recommend to utilize the 120 hz on the PS5?
If you have a modern day home entertainment system do not use optical out just use HDMI that's more channels with it allowing you to have more independent speakers optical out was originally used as a way to get a digital signal out of receivers into things like tape and CD players so you can make a perfect copy of the audio that is playing through the receiver
You must have said that before even watching the video
This info will be great in 2 years when I can finally get a ps5
2 years.. I think you mean when our grand children get it in 2048?
Its so pain in the ass to have no ps5 🥲
Wait till a make a refreshed slim model the current ones are cheaply made. Loud and buggy.
Very Very useful and pertinent video on my sad old Astro A40 TR, you sir are right on point with these PS5 tips
Get free giveaway gift from elexhack on instagram he just giveaway an ps5 to someone right now
I wouldn’t say it’s ONLY and Astro issue as not only Astro use the optical audio ports, I have steelseries and it uses one too so for me it is a huge pain. Not sure why both next gen consoles have decided to axe this port, it’s like the headphone jack with phones!
This video is saving my surround life. Thank you! 🙌
Note that optical doesn't have sufficient bandwidth for lossless surround audio... If that doesn't matter to you, no worries.
@@pgbollwerk It's just a hint thats not nessesary to buy a adapter to get an optical output for the PS5. Also the PS5 actualy dont support higher than DTS5.1 .. so no worrys about optical connection for audio. If DolbyAtmos or DTS:X comes for PS5 you also need the HDMI connection to the TV to passtrough the signal to your Audiosystem without use optical but HDMI. If you have the PULSE 3D Headset you dont need a extra sound solution.
thats very good to know for when playstation supports discord, that means i wont have to switch over from discord on my PC to psn chat on console as anything organised through discord can stay on discord meaning i can keep my microphone active on PC all the time
I'm so mad I can't get the ps5 yet because they sold out
Why dont you follow PS5 Stock Alerts or Wario 64 on Twitter and turn notifications on to increase chances of purchasing one, every week theres always a a few store that sells it online
Would you happen to have a link to where we could buy the HDMI to Optical adapter?
Sorry there wont be a ps5 pro
Ps5 just needed another usb A port in front and an optical in back and it would have been perfect

HDMI is so much better for passing an audio signal. There's a reason option has been dropped and that's because it's obsolete. It's also not hard to buy an adapter, though it may be a problem for legacy products which is understandable. I guess everything is either wireless/ USB or HDMI these days.
yep. Optical lacks the bandwidth for lossless 7.1 audio. I suspect that's a big reason why it's going away.
Yeah except now you can't just connect your home theater system directly without the need of extra crap

Will this allow me to turn chat party up and game down ? I’m talking about the adapter.

I have the Astro A40 TR like the one you have in the video, but I plug the headset directly into the PS5 controller. I used to use the Mixamp, but friends in the party were not able to hear me correctly or clearly, so I have connected the 3.5 mm jack straight into the controller and haven't had any issues since.
Glasscock!! Can you address the problem with the headphone jacks being somewhat loose and causing party audio to sound like you’re getting slapped every syllable
Are you sure your hdmi settings should be on tv and not av amplifier when using the optical to hdmi adaptor from Astro?
thanks John. i'have a logitech 5.1 sound system. i'm using it with a 3,5mm cable. is there any adapter for 3,5mm to hdmi?
Note: 3D audio for headphones does NOT work when using HDMI extractor, you need a compatible DAC
Glasscock.. What a name man!
So is there any adapter that supports HDMI 2.1. Most TV's only support stereo when using the optical out as a passthrough. Would be nice not having to buy a whole new receiver that may or may not even work.
How is it if you use your Ps5 audio to tv then tv to Theater system? Is the options for the ps5 the same
John, would you recommend to use any third-party hdmi > optical convertor? I plan to use it with my SoundBlasterX G5 & Beyerdynamic DT990 Pro. I wonder would it still be able to run 120hz..
In my case, I connected the optical audio from the TV to the home theater when playing with both PS3/PS4. It works just fine but I think that it might be a little bit of delay
Is the astro adapter compatibile also with steelseries headsets?
I have a PS5 and noticed straight away there was no optical output so just use hdmi and then go optical from tv to sound bar, but I will look at getting the adapter at some point as I usually go optical from console to soundbar
Is there a link to buy one of those adapters?
