You know it's good when he gets a stroke while trying to describe the knife
But will it Keelll? I'm thinking so! I'm going to Wallmart. Great video.
That's my dad right there you guys! Just so you know. Taught me SOOOOOO much of what I know!
Now after watching the entire review. Good job. I have a set. Best 8 dollars I have ever spent. Going to a few more of them.
Have had mine since it first came out about two years ago from Walmart and haven’t stopped using it yet. Haven’t really had to sharpen it yet just use my kitchen steel and it brings back the edge every time
FYI: Most brutal can for a knife destruction test... GOYA coconut water cans. Like a fucking grenade shell. Also you can make some bomb proof alcohol stoves out of them. :)
Good info. Notes have been taken!
I bought this set as a cheap filler knife when away from home. Out of curiosity I tried the brass rod test, the edge rolled under approximately 5 pounds of pressure. I also tried a bend test and the chefs knife snapped surprisingly easily and had a medium/course grain. The edge geometry is way too thick for a kitchen knife, and the entire thing is overly heavy. The blades don't hold an edge very long during normal use, and are hard to sharpen despite being so soft due to how they hold an extremely stubborn bur. The Forged in Fire knife set isn't litterally the worst knife set I have ever owned, but I would recommend upgrading to a basic Dexter Russell or Victorinox chef's both brands make decent quality knives at what is still an affordable price. If you want super cheap knives I have had decent results with Pure Komachi brand knives, the steel is still a bit soft but it is fairly easy to sharpen and isn't brittle the blade geometry is thinner and better suited for slicing, and the handles are comfortable.
You have done the best forged in fire testing then the other people
I've wanted to buy the set but had my boubts. I'm going to to pick this set up now. Thanks Doc!
Use this knife at work for sushi and it’s awesome, got dull fairly quick but I sharpened it recently and works even better right out the box , love the way this knife looks
I feel like those knifes didn t deserve your time 😁 best regards from Romania!
Fun change
For 15$ what the hell Do you expect I've had that knife set for over 2 years with no Issues
The sound of that knife cutting through the aluminum can is worse than fingernails on a chalkboard lol
ive seen that set of knives at my local walmart. Been waiting on a review for these
Would love to see these tested on the actual show just for giggles. Love the vid, was done in docp's style of this is gonna be crap, holy crap their not crap style. It's always great when you get a product that surprises you. At the price these would make a great camping set too. Keep making sharp things fun and enjoyable.
They are simultaneously soft and brittle, and I say from experience that they would be destroyed under less extreme conditions.
I thought these were 100% a marketing gimmick and now maybe 75/25 lol it seems like a solid kitchen knife, great Video, Semper Fidelis
I bought the set with the mini cleaver and a serrated knife and it's not bad i sharpened it on my sharpener for a few mins and it's razor sharp paid 9 bucks great for my camp kit
Interesting re the cleaver. I live in China, and actual knifes are rarely used. Full cleavers used all the time, but used like an axe. Bang bang bang from the kitchen. Sharpness matters not. Toughness is number one. Thick heavy blade. I bought an oilstone and sharpened ours, wife hated it. A sharp edge just dulls when chopping bone.
@@TheScotsalan if you read my post it says a mini cleaver not weight behind sir ... It is maybe 1 inch high and 2.5 inches long I have several cleavers sir as i live on a ranch in Texas and process game and live stock and I am very familiar with knives sir and axes and machetes my fav cleaver is an old hickory butcher cleaver high carbon takes a likin ... I have premium knives and collect them. I thought some clarity to my post was nessesary. Thanks for your comment. Maybe research the sets available from forged in fire so you can see for yourself.
Docp, nice review. Your honesty makes your site refreshing. Knife snobs make me giggle. Search for professional prep cooks and butchers. Lots of stainless blades. Fibrox, Victorinox and the like. You can spend your money on overpriced knives I'll take functionality over brand names any day.
It looks like the primary bevel is milled, it looked like there was vertical lines kinda like a benchmade would have. Might explain why you weren't seeing a plunge line, either way they did way better than I thought they would lol.
I cut exactly the same way as you, nothing wrong with that, like pointing at the target with the opposite trigger finger when not looking directly down the sights, you know exactly where the rounds are going if that makes sense, Ha. But for a 12 buck knife set that ain't too bad. Going to be looking a them.
Ok, so now I want you to do the same test with a knife you think would handle it well. Or better yet, the next battlebox knife you get in
Doc, please go to the other extreme and review a knife from Todsstuff. He does some nice bits n pieces such as 15th century bollock daggers, Italian Renaissance misericords and ear daggers oh and a kitchen knife set....
This is going to sound hysterical but I have been very interested in possibly buying those knives but have not. The reason why is I thought they were just a gimmick and you get them home and maybe they would cut enough for one meal and then they would no longer be sharp. I’m going to go buy these. Thanks for the review. I’m glad you decided to do it even though you didn’t want to. For that price, that makes me very happy, LOL.
Nice video. Are you planning anymore 40k intros?
I like my 550 cord medium well but i think 10ft would have been good vs 20ft
I love that show
We’ll see where your mood is after the going gear video
Out of pure curiosity I looked up Halex Holdings. They are based in FL and the only website associated with them is "Buy Forged In Fire". Where they sell just this knife set for $29.95+shipping. (you got a hell of a deal)
I tried to find connections between them and a company in Germany of the same name but couldn't find any. If by chance they are related, that means they would have access to proprietary metal casting and hardening techniques held in patents by the German Halex company.
There is also a US based Halex under the Scott Fetzer Company, and they also own Ginsu. I couldn't find any connections either, but would be interesting if they are.
I fell down a rabbit hole after being impressed by this seemingly cheap attempt at a money grab, but If I see at Walmart for a similar price I might just pick it up.
If I was still in uniform I would definitely put you in for a qurterly award, or at least you would habe pne hell of a great bullet for the primary duty performace section of your Enlisted Performace Report! Thanks for all that info!
@@DocP91B I appreciate that, I just like to know about the products I buy or may potentially buy.
One of my pet peeves, faux Brut-De-Forge
Personally I love mine
I live in China, and yup, many things made here are crap. But some things are ok. If its made for the domestic market, some things have to actually work, cos chinese consumer will take it back and complain like feck to get their money back. A good buyer for the US should always buy from an established supplier that sells in China. 😂
SMKW is a US company that seems to have picked a good manufacturer for their house brand slip joints, certain aspects of the quality rival Case.
I chuckled about onions. Onions hurt my eyes more than the CS (tear) gas they hit us with in basic. "Tear gas" hardly bothers me at all, a minor annoyance. Onions...PS when cooking there is no such thing as too many onions
I have a 20yr old cutlery set from Ronco that still works. What the hell do I need with a new late night gimmick? Take care buddy and God speed.
The key words there are "20yr old" they sure did build things to last back then!
I have a question is SR115 steel a good steel. For a knife
Test them on what they are ment to be tested on, food (other then the watermelon). Also throw into the mix another cheap kitchen knife set from Walmart, the forged in fire pairing and cooks knife set.. i bet you mailing me something awesome that forged in fire set will beat out the cold steel one. (And i like cold steel)
The forged in fire set is pretty terrible at cutting food, the blade geometry is way too thick and the steel is simultaneously soft and brittle.
Best budget survival knive?
What is your budget?
@@DocP91B aliexpress budget
Than a Spartan Blades DAMASCUS is for you and at a steal of 195.00 plus tax and shipping
They seem to be pretty decent kitchen knives, only problem is that they are not forged. Not that it’s saying that but it’s implied. Just a gimmick to sell knives. That beeing said, you really dont need top of the lines to cook, they just have to be sharp! And it’s so easy to sharpen kitchen knives
And just tell the wanna be chefs to go f themselves! Lol you are doing fine
You can get a satin finish with a wire brush and get all the scale off. I did a hunting knife with forged "leave the hammer marks in" fittings. Custom order
This isn't satin. This is universally mirrored even in the pits. There's NO way these were actually forged and hammered.
@@DocP91B oh I know that. What I meant was a satin finish is the best you can get and leave the hammer marks. Like you said if you put two side by side the dimples would match
@@DocP91BI agree that those knives definitely aren't getting the texture from someone hand forging it, but it should be noted that a soft buff can be used to polish a textured surface like that fairly well.
Forged in Fire? Stamped in China 😂
On the flipside though, I have been looking at picking up the Cold Steel kitchen set and 'guinea-pigging' my brother to see how it works.
But will it keel?
You earned 10 bonus points for writing keel instead of kill.
@@DocP91B nice.
@@DocP91B the last thing a burglar hears when he breaks into Doug Marcadas house "it will keel!"
drop the knife from about 4 feet on concrete 5-10 times, if it breaks it explains the edge retention, if not its a genuinely good knife for the price and average joe.
i should add that a knife that cant handle a drop isnt a bad knife, but with what this knife is going for seeing from the price and general audience it would not be for the people they intended it for
Surgical stainless is a meaningless tag line... 440 is considered surgical so is 420... But so is 316
The sad part is that several grades of steel that are actually used in razor blades like AEB-L aren't super expensive and can actually make great knives if the manufacturer actually wanted to create a decent product.
One of lifes little surprises...Hate the stamped and artificial hammered look, same sort of affair as that RUclips ad for JapaKnives (I've seen it advertised as both a Chefs knife and also a Fishermans knife).
Do you like edged weapons with the hammer marks left in? It looks good on hatchets and tomahawks
@@krknfmkr8919 I love rustic edged weapons with the metalworkers' hard work shown, absolutely hate the pressed artificial hammer marks that give a false impression that the item took more than two minutes to make and tries to make it look like a smith like yourself have actually worked the steel.
Was begining to worry about you brother, hadn't heard from you in some time, I hope that all is well.
@@samc705 I'm doing well. Things are still weird because of covid. I just got some new stuff from Jantz. When is your granddaughter due? Any news?
@@krknfmkr8919 I totally understand about the Covid thing, both the wife and I have just got over having it, I still can't smell or taste anything unless they have really strong smells or flavours, and the little one is due to arrive end of May brother.
Its bent! I can't believe the History Channel (1 of my favs) endorsed this knife kit. Enjoy the vid not the knife 😆
I still think any fine edge SpyderCo knives make a great chef knife.
All I can find is it's some kind of surgical steel
I saw the package and the indentation and knew this would be bad knives although I love the show I will not buy them
It's a gimmick
Junk. :)
I waited to watch this after I got home from work just bc I wanted to lol at you making fun of it. You almost got the first thumbs down from me this time. I guess ill have to wait for another battlebox
You talk to much
