Irene Dunne, one of the most stunning, gifted actresses to grace the stage and screen. I visited Madison, Indiana yesterday. The locals knew all about her, proud she was a citizen of their town. I've loved her in every movie....truly gifted!

She wasn't there. Jimmy said it at the beginning. She was so excited to be there, but was unable to attend. She was 87 years old. Irene Dunne deserved at least on Oscar and in my opinion they forgot about her. She is my favorite actress. Why? Katharine Hepburn couldn't sing and dance like her. Same with Bette Davis and so many other. She was great at drama, comedy, musicals, and what a beautiful voice. My favorite and everything with such grace.

If you noticed during her film clip presentation the crowd started cheering when they saw Irene dancing as Magnolia to "Can't Help Lovin That Man" in "Showboat" from 1936 ...... that is one of the greatest scenes in cinematic history.

Nancy L She’s my favorite too. She was born in my hometown of Louisville, KY. I’m so proud to claim her.
She was one of the few great actresses with such range. She was brilliant in drama, comedy, musicals!
Anytime one of her movies is on I watch it, no matter how many times I’ve seen it.
I swear I could watch LIFE WITH FATHER every week.❤️
I love WHITE CLIFFS OF DOVER, but I can’t do that one too often. 💔

irene dunne was the most talented and the most beautiful woman that ever stood before a camera. I first saw her in penny serinade with cary grant and i realized then what kind of woman i wanted to marry , a woman of principles and timeless grace , out of all the other stars of that era , to me she was the most down to earth, real , compassionate to ever grace the screen . she always brought her personality to the screen and she was always natural , like a real person, not like a star or a ham , she was real.
she had a very relaxed style and a great sense of humor . i will always love and remember her for those qualities, ---- D.T

"She combines elegance, grace, class, dignity...". Mr. Stewart was the perfect colleague to pay tribute to Miss Dunne. She's like him...a giant in the pantheon of Hollywood's Golden Age. It was so sad that Miss Dunne took ill and couldn't be there in person to finally receive the acclaim that was hers and that was so long overdue. I hope she was able to watch from her hospital room.

I envy your DNA. Your aunt was an extraordinary woman, both onscreen and off. There are historic plaques erected in her honor in both Louisville, KY and Madison, Indiana. The one in Louisville is on Fourth Street, site of the world premiere of "My Favorite Wife" in 1940 and the one in Madison is on Main Street, in front of the Ohio Theatre. I had the distinct honor and privilege to attend a showing of "The Awful Truth" at this theater during "Irene Dunne Week" in 2013.

Irene Dunne could execute comedy, drama, and music better than, maybe, most of her peers in Golden Age Hollywood. With five Oscar nominations, how could she not have garnered the statue? The list of films with acclaimed performances is long; can't pick a favorite out of those movies. However, the Kentucky redhead was "lovely to look at," and listen to. Thanks for the memories, Miss Dunne.

I just came upon this item as a cross reference--a thousand thanks for sharing it! Irene Dunne is my all-time favorite performer--no one can equal her versatility, skill, timing, beauty, and true glamour and grace.
I was a university research assistant at the time of her death, and the professor who employed me brought in clippings of tribute articles from the UK and US. I was devastated--I didn't even know she was still living!! I began a library search for info. The London Times had a lovely, long tribute. The Pittsburgh Press (my local paper) also carried an article about a Pittsburgh teacher whose students had written to Dunne after watching "I Remember Mama"--Dunne sent each one of them a personal letter and a signed head shot. This teacher and I had both graduated from Carlow College and both became teachers--I contacted her and we became fast friends. At the time, Elsie Hillman, a prominent Pittsburgh heiress and Republican on Carlow's board, put me in touch with Dunne's secretary, who sent me a lovely note and indicated that she could not forward condolences to Dunne's daughter. (Anyone know anything about her??) I also spoke to film critic Michael Medved during a radio show shortly thereafter--he agreed that no one except for maybe Meryl Streep could claim such versatility and respect in the film pantheon.
My early years watching Live from the MET on PBS were also spent enthralled by Frederika von Stade, an extra joy to see her sing the tribute. I currently serve on an advisory panel at the Pittsburgh Opera because of the influence of von Stade, Renata Scotto, and others.
I still use Irene Dunne films to teach my drama students about acting, especially "I Remember Mama."
I hope that Irene Dunne's friends and family realize that so many of us still cherish her. And for those associated with Elsie Hillman, Dr. Thomas Hopkins, Frederika von Stade, and TCM--still bringing us these classic film greats on tv--I am eternally grateful.
Never underestimate the power of such connections. Thank you, Ms. Dunne. You have touched my life in so many ways.

X X I believe God always did bless her and still does. I read in the Book “THE RKO GALS” that in her later years when she had a little more time she went to afternoon Mass every day saying that it was no sacrifice to go to a 25 minute Mass to say “Praise You, My Lord” Her faith in the Lord made her the genuine person she was. No matter what her profession would have been, she would have been the same person. No wonder she was referred to as The First Lady of Hollywood. There was never and doubtless will never be anyone close to her style and talent and able to look completely at ease while being a perfectionist and knowing what she was doing every minute. Where is her Life Time Achievement Award?

Irene Dunne made numerous unforgettable films but I agree that "Show Boat" and "I Remember Mama" really mark here as unique and magical. When she does the shuffle in "Show Boat" it is an amazing moment; when she sings "After the Ball" in "Show Boat" it is a heart-melting moment. In "Show Boat" she ages convincingly from a pre-teen to an elderly lady and much of the authenticity does not come from makeup or costuming but the way she holds her shoulders and how she pitches her speaking voice. A true genius.

Thanks for posting. My favorite classic movie actress--and I love so many of them from that era. But, there was just something extra special about Irene Dunne. Some of her big hits were remade--and I think that is one of the reasons she is not remembered as much as some other stars. Plus, the fact that she didn't live a life in the headlines. But, there really was nobody quite like her.
