Best Cary Grant partner ever, if not the most romantic they really connected as a team. Both had brilliant comedic timing and were so believable and natural together. Such a gracious lady in every way.
Too bad that they did not make a couple more films together. However…although Dunne looked ten years younger than her age until past fifty, she was 6 years older than Grant, and she was older than “the pack” of top female stars by at least five years.
Irene Dunne's best performances, IMO, were in the films Back Street, Anne Vickers, The Awful Truth, and Penny Serenade. Wonderful films sadly forgotten by many.
Watch Irene in 13 Women versus Myrna Loy. One of the few movies of that era where the protagonist ( Irene) and the protagonist ( Myrna) are both women: I could watch either in anything except musicals.
😂👍 My favorite movie of hers - My favorite Wife, 1939 with Cary Grent .Re -maded in 1963 with Doris Day ,playing the same part. Best not mention the un finished Somethings Got To Give 1962........
When Irene Dunne first arrived in Hollywood in 1930 (after having acted on the stage for 10 years), the studio with which she had signed a long term contract (RKO) wanted her to keep her marriage to Dr. Frank Griffin a secret for fear that it would ruin her popularity as a rising star. Miss Dunne and Dr. Griffin had been married since 1927. The truth finally came out and Irene was relieved because she wanted the world to know what a great part her husband had played in her achieving success. The Griffins were a devoted couple and remained married until Frank passed away in 1965. The object of their mutual affection was their adopted daughter Mary Frances. They were the proud grandparents of Mary Frances' two children and Irene would live long enough to become a great-grandmother. She passed away at the age of 91 on September 4, 1990.
Corrections: her grandfather did not work in a boiler factory. He was a boilermaker on his own. Irene attended St. Michael's catholic church and sang in the choir at the First Baptist church in Madison, IN. Irene never was going to give up her music career to stay home. Her mother made sure of that. She passed up the proposal from Fritz Ernst (friend and VP of US Steel) to keep going with her career. Please do more research and get facts straight. She was a woman of integrity and her fan club likes to keep it that way. BTW you forgot to mention her well known nickname: The First Lady of Hollywood 🤦♀️
Penny Serenade is one of the greatest films ever made. It’s a masterpiece. Grant and Dunne believed it to be their best work.

I would agree that Irene Dunne was a superb partner for Cary Grant they were suited in every way.
No mention of I Remember Mamma?!
