This is no joke. I have been struggling with the driver lately and I must admit I am guilty of positioning the driver handle too high. I went to the range today after viewing this video and I probably hit 17 out of 20 balls beautifully! The dispersion on even my missed shots is so much better I could not believe it. This is my first video that I have seen with Coach Lockey and you now you have a new fan and subscriber. Cheers from Arizona.
First time seeing you on a video. I have never heard of this before and I will try it my next time golfing. I liked your content and your easy way of explaining so I have subscribed to your channel. Looking forward to the next video I did hit the bell till next time thank you.
Coach! I tried this at the range the other day after battling a slice. I can report back that this absolutely worked! I hit 12 shots. 4 drew left, 6 straight, 2 hint of fade. Before this change I’d hit on average 11 slices! Some 30 yards plus. Amazing!
I recently became aware of centrifugal forces that impact the club head on my swing. I’m actually setting up with my club abut a ball back of the center mark. It has increased my distance massively! Your tip on toe up and grip should help with straightening out my drive. Thank you
Thought about this before and wondered if the driver toe up at address could cause the bottom to hit the ground and shut down the face at impact (like an iron does). This video helps prove toe slightly up is actually correct and the intended lie at address. Great stuff. Learned/confirmed something today. Go figure. Thanks Coach!
This makes a lot of sense. As a single plan player, I sometimes have the handle of the driver too upright and as you have demonstrated this results in high poor fade/slice shots.
Thank you Coach. I didn’t know this. I have always been a flat driver guy. And hit weak drives most of the times. On each round I hit a few drives well, but couldn’t figure out what I was doing wrong! Range time coming up!
Just another thing to add on to my long list of things that I need to do before I hit the golf ball. I have I have too many golf swing thoughts and so I've played the worst golf of my life. I'm ready to delete all of my RUclips golf instruction videos.
Man. I was struggling with my nice ping g430ax driver and i watch your video, i didnt even practice? I measure my tee cup to the middle of the club and use it to hit in the middle. Wow i was smoking that driver straight, for golfers thats the best tip you gave to hit straight drive. Thanks a lot
Don’t know how many times I’ve tried to hit the ball a little outside center. I think after all these years it now in my DNA to always aim for the center.
Hey coach - cheers, this worked a treat - toe up, lower hands - I belted some arrow-straight drives at the range this evening. I am pretty gobsmacked at the results to be quite honest. No need (yet) for a shorter-length driver shaft, which I have seriously been considering. Thanks again for the tip. 10-handicapper fyi.
Thanks for this tip! Holding my handle lower gives me a naturally better take away, and back swing. This little change makes everything about my swing feel much better. Thanks again! 😊
Thank you for clarifying this - I have been vexed for quite a while about this issue because I just didn't know. I assumed that the woods should lie flat like the irons - glad to hear that is not so.☺
Can you maybe do a video for driver setup when you adjust the loft and how that face angle should be set up? One part when the club is de-lofted and the face angle is open and another part where the club is lofted and the face ange is closed, compared to when the driver is set to neutral at the hosel?
came across you randomly and what you say here is something I've never thought of so ill definitely be looking at this when I go the driving range next time, although I don't drive the "usual" way I don't "lock" my wrists when I drive, I start twisting my hips bending my wrist the letting my wrist follow in a way that my wrist are on like a delay to the rest of my body, why? I have no idea it just feels right and it helps me hit longer and more importantly straighter drives lol
Love that you have that track facing you bruh. Right on your eye line where it belongs! Loving the content. I play around with lie with the irons, but driver is something I have only played with just a little bit. Thanks Coach! Keep gripping and ripping it bruh!!!
Great advice coach. 2 more questions: once you’ve gotten the driver toe up, should the face of it be pointing up as well, and should the face be square to target or slightly open to target? Cheers.
Went and did a GCQuad session and my local indoor simulator… and was horrified to see on average a toe down dynamic lie of 5-7 😮. That could explain why my “bomb balls” were only 1 out of 27 😂. I’ve been so concerned with my vertical ground forces and getting a good shoulder tilt that my hands at address are completely neglected. 😂 Tonight, I’m so thankful to be catching up on my Coach vids!… this is defiantly getting incorporated in my next session! #lockeyarmy 🏆
I don’t think I have ever thought about the driver head position. I usually lay the head flat so I will go to the range and place it up a bit to see how it works.😊
I have never heard this tip. I always had it flat on the ground and I think most mid to high handicappers do the same. Will try it out, can’t hurt my my game that’s for sure
I like to float the head at address. But it seems the issue is to make sure the shaft angle is low enough to make the tip up if the head is on the ground. I’ll try correcting for that. Does the distance of the head from the ball make a difference as well? Thanks for this great tip. New subscriber.
This is a really helpful upload. Especially checking club face direction at address with a tee. However I will say, I spent years trying to hit straighter with my driver, now after a realisation and watching Bubba Watson in person and having an open minded coach.....big cuts or big draws are just easier to hit. Ball speed went up, distance went up, height went up, centered strikes shot up in frequency. My swing feels looser, faster more on point etc. However I had forgotten how important club face starting direction was with all the changes, so thanks mate. Great content as ever.
My problem with my driver is it does have an open face and it mess ups with my swing thought/s. What’s the best setting for the ping g410 to stop slicing?
Don’t necessarily agree with this. It may work for some but for me I hit the ball much better when my clubs are laying flat. Every Bryson dechambeau lies his clubs flat
Great basic instuctional vid janner !! Loved that !! Ps you lucky sod playing in madeira , been there 4 times , did you eat the beef on a skewer !! Bloody lovely !! Anyway cheers mate keep the good work coming 💚👍👏
Coach I have set my Driver shaft to the more upright position ,no lower loft ,no higher loft ,just the upright setting and now I don't have a slice or a fade anymore .No one talks about how important lie angle is with the driver .most golf You Tubers say that the upright setting is only for taller players Wrong I'm 168cm 5 ft 8inches and it works just fine .All you slicers out there .give it a try maybe you will just find how to get rid of your slice .Lie Angle matters Thanks Coach
Dose this principle also coincide with 3,5 woods and hybrid clubs. As well as if you were hitting the ball of the deck instead of a tee? Will definitely be trying this out when I'm next at the range, as I've a horrible slice with all my woods and 4H hybred
ok im 5ft 6 broad shoulder 2xl guy . i cant swing in to out unless i pull my trail foot back . for some reason it seems like it helps to have my hands high at address with driver . i struggled with 7 iron as well until i choked down on iron to what my pw is . should i change the housel setting to high ? fyi i gripped down yesterday on driver swung half speed and the ball was going almost as far as full swing . i hit my driver as far as my 3 wood . my 3 wood slices as well or i would use that . i could not hit it at all until i choked down on 3 wood . i still with a stiff shaft have to swing really easy . if i put and power to the swing it does not work . even if i swing back fast and the shaft flexes going from back to down swing poor contact . feel like throwing hands up in the air .
Interesting video but this raises a question for me: Irons are adjusted in length/lie based on things like wrist-floor measurement and overall height. Driver is not, why not? A taller person will naturally deliver a standard driver more upright than a shorter person?
So what’s the most common shot if your IRONS are too much toe down? Because I recently started putting more toe up at address on irons and I’m now getting cleaner and straighter shots. I’m wondering if I was too much toe down originally when I thought it was level. I used to have a lot of thin hits, chunks, and fades before.
Yes, asked my coach about it and he gave me the right idea, but I was still estimating the exact angle - the tee tip is brill. Thanks, once again, Coach!
This is no joke. I have been struggling with the driver lately and I must admit I am guilty of positioning the driver handle too high. Awesome and welcome 👍
You just made another classic mistake... Thinking that doing well on thee driving range translates to the golf course lol.
Ditto!!!
First time seeing you on a video. I have never heard of this before and I will try it my next time golfing.
I liked your content and your easy way of explaining so I have subscribed to your channel.
Looking forward to the next video I did hit the bell till next time thank you.
Never thought of it like this. I think high hands might apply to my driver, 3 wood and 2 iron actually.
Coach! I tried this at the range the other day after battling a slice. I can report back that this absolutely worked! I hit 12 shots. 4 drew left, 6 straight, 2 hint of fade. Before this change I’d hit on average 11 slices! Some 30 yards plus. Amazing!

There are a lot of things that can result in a slice, not just that
Thank you Coach. I didn’t know this. I have always been a flat driver guy. And hit weak drives most of the times. On each round I hit a few drives well, but couldn’t figure out what I was doing wrong! Range time coming up!

yes yes
Going to try this method. Looks like a very good system to address the ball properly.
Just another thing to add on to my long list of things that I need to do before I hit the golf ball. I have I have too many golf swing thoughts and so I've played the worst golf of my life. I'm ready to delete all of my RUclips golf instruction videos.

Really helpful. I’ve always set my driver up level but I’ll switch now. Cheers
Thanks!
Thank you 😘

Great to hear 👍
Tried this today , game changer for me , so simple as your not changing anything about your swing , played 9 holes hit 8 fairways 👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Thank you very much.
Never heard such a thing and always wondered about it.
I’’ give it a try .
Thanks again
You are welcome!
Simple, informative, useful. I like it. Thanks.
You're welcome!
Thanks for this tip! Holding my handle lower gives me a naturally better take away, and back swing. This little change makes everything about my swing feel much better. Thanks again! 😊
Outstanding vid. I know I struggle with my driver set up, including ball position.
Thank you for clarifying this - I have been vexed for quite a while about this issue because I just didn't know. I assumed that the woods should lie flat like the irons - glad to hear that is not so.☺
Did he mention woods should lie slightly toe up too?
Interesting. Excited to try. Thx Coach

I always struggled to get the driver head level like iron and would often slice it so hard it would come back at me. Can’t wait to give this a go
Hope it helps
can't wait to try it in my next driving session! definitely having slice problems due to wrong setup!
came across you randomly and what you say here is something I've never thought of so ill definitely be looking at this when I go the driving range next time, although I don't drive the "usual" way I don't "lock" my wrists when I drive, I start twisting my hips bending my wrist the letting my wrist follow in a way that my wrist are on like a delay to the rest of my body, why? Can you explain why toe up is the proper position? I appreciate the tip but understanding why is even more useful, in my opinion.
Thank you so much ; great instruction.
Thank you. Really useful and actionable knowledge.
Love that you have that track facing you bruh. Right on your eye line where it belongs! Loving the content. I play around with lie with the irons, but driver is something I have only played with just a little bit. Thanks Coach! Keep gripping and ripping it bruh!!!
Appreciate that Solomon 👍👌
@@CoachLockeyat least while we’re on it should one entertain this with the irons as well?
Try The Claw driver by the Natural Golf Company . Designed exactly for this to toe up position .
Great info! I'm trying it tomorrow. Thanks!
Have fun!
A very good lesson and great tips thank you .!
Glad you liked it!
Always wondered why the pros set up with the toe high
Thanks coach !!
Thnx for the tip 💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻
Nice tips... very clear info. Merci!
👍
Great advice coach !!
Thanks for watching 👍
Never thought of this. Thank you
This is useful and easy to understand video. The photo with math and physic explanation is quite useful 👍👏
Great advice coach. 2 more questions: once you’ve gotten the driver toe up, should the face of it be pointing up as well, and should the face be square to target or slightly open to target? Cheers.
Thank you for this great tip . I’m a persistent slicer and wondered if I adjust my driver to be more upright to encourage toe up in my set up help?
being playing gold for almost 30 years. Never knew this is how the driver is supposed to lie. Thank you.
Thanks for the explanation. No one really explains this…
I was definitely wondering . . . Going to try this

5-7 down with driver? Woohooo haha.
Love this tip. I think I tend to have the club too flat. Excited to test this out!!!

Just watched your video and this is the first time I have ever seen this demonstration of the driver head position. Looking forward to trying this 👍🏌️
Welcome aboard!
Should the toe be slightly up when you hit your fairway hybrid or wood also?
Fantastic lesson coach thanks
Glad you enjoyed it!

great video coach question what about the 3 wood 5 wood and hybrids same thing or different approach?
Slightly toe up with all of them too please 👍
Hey Lockey! Would you toe up for a 3 wood as well? Even off the deck?
Yes sir 👍 just a little
Brilliant tips
Glad it was helpful!
Brilliant! Thank-youi.

@@CoachLockey thanks. It's been 5 years of hard work. Got my handicap down to 3 and my ball speed up mid to high 150s
Thanks for the advice. Our season is just about over, my next round will be my last but I will put those tips into use.

Good luck! And enjoy it 👌
This tip was money...thanks Coach!
This is awesome fixed my slice hit 30 deD straight
Glad it helped 👍
Works amazingly.
Sound advice. Definitely something I will do.
Thank you so much for that
My drives were terrible until I started lining it up
On the toe. Now I’m blasting drives and am in play every time
Do not always remember to do this - thank you for the reminder as fundamentals are so important to us higher handicap golfers
Coach you and Chris Ryan are the only two teachers tell you to lift the head on the driver ..thanks boys great job
Alex Elliot too
Great post
Glad you enjoyed it
Thanks, coach! I'm inclined to fiddle with everything until something clicks. Now I can stop worrying with this part and work on others. 🤔
I’m going to try this at the range! Hoping it helps as I have tried a few techniques, I’ll be posting the results on my page.
My problem with my driver is it does have an open face and it mess ups with my swing thought/s. What’s the best setting for the ping g410 to stop slicing?
Does this also hold for the short irons
Very helpful
Glad to hear that 👍
Don’t necessarily agree with this. It may work for some but for me I hit the ball much better when my clubs are laying flat. Every Bryson dechambeau lies his clubs flat

What about the fairway woods and hybrids?
A couple years ago a adjusted my address to a high handle. Haven't hit slices ever since.
i liked this and will try tomorrow
Great video! Coach, those are some smart looking shoes, what brand? Thanks 😊
Glad you liked it. These are a pair of FJ 👍
Thank you for this video. Hopefully the driver struggle is over. Cheers!!
At 6’6” it’s really hard for me to get the toe up unless I’m really far away from the ball so I don’t know if I can do it
Adjustable driver? If not play your patterns 👍
@@CoachLockey yes TSR2 and I made it more upright which is how I set up my drivers, my irons are 2 up
Do you carry this club head position to the 3 wood and hybrids?
Yes sir
I would have liked to see where the little triangle on top of the driver is positioned relative to the ball.
Excellent thanks!!
Would this apply to fairway woods as well?
Yes sir. Little toe up 👍
@@CoachLockey definitely trying this out!!

Yeah toe up but slightly less with fairway and then again slightly less with hybrids
Good tip

Interesting video but this raises a question for me:
Irons are adjusted in length/lie based on things like wrist-floor measurement and overall height. Driver is not, why not?
A taller person will naturally deliver a standard driver more upright than a shorter person?
Correct which I why adjustable drivers are so helpful.
Does this work the same for hybrids?
Similar yes but not quite as much toe up 👍
Noway am I going to slide it in first then grip it. I'm going to grip it, then slide it in just like coach lockey does it!
So what’s the most common shot if your IRONS are too much toe down? Because I recently started putting more toe up at address on irons and I’m now getting cleaner and straighter shots. Toe down shots will likely start right of target…..

Guilty! I have the Stealth 2 and it has upright adjustment which I just changed it too. I bet my drives look nicer next Round, thanks Coach!
Yes, asked my coach about it and he gave me the right idea, but I was still estimating the exact angle - the tee tip is brill. Thanks, once again, Coach!
Fantastic! Hope it helps
What should be the height of ball at starting position
ruclips.net/video/vu2YXJN8WCA/видео.htmlsi=giZzXBNJCsCIVyOY
Would this be similar/same with a 3 wood?
Yeah, little bit toe up with fairway woods and hybrids
What’s the best way to implement this? Bending forward from the hips, bending knees and getting “shorter” etc?

It looks a little funny when you close to 2m tall, but works like a charm! Thanks for the tip
