When scientists can't pinpoint a behavior, they just make up a new term for it. I have deep respect for scientists, but when it comes to animal behavior, the only experts are the animals.

Im a professional Skipper, and very good friends with one of the Sailors that had its Sailboat severly damaged last week, south of Lisbon by the same group of ORCAS. I understand your comments but with all respect, you worked with Orcas in Captivity... so their behaviour is not comparable to wild Orcas ... so I hear you saying all the time that they have no idea but in fact, you to have no idea of what is going on... so there has been 38 reports of Sail boats damaged so far since march 2020... Again they don't go after fishing boats or small boats...sailboats only... With or without engine ON. My friend´s Sailboat they ripped the rudder without warning just before he knew and they flipped his sailboat 4 times 180 degrees with coordinated attack from a distance of 20m meters, gaining speed and then raming against the hull for about 30 minutes...and in some cases lifting the boat up and grabbing the lower Bow of the boat to try to flip it over... Im pretty sure they know that a fibreglass boat is not food... its is possible that one of them got injured by a foil of some silent speedy Sailboat that that cross their migrating path... and so they do react to foils and rudders... As a professional Sailor, here is what I would suggest other sailors to do: - Avoid approaching the group at all cost - If you notice them before they reach you, turn off your engine immediately , auto-pilot and all electronic systems and take down your sails. - Lock your rudder in middle position but only tight enough so it does not move with the force of the water...but lose enough so that if they hit it it does not force your rudder wire system or Autopilot. The ideia is to play dead, so that they lose interest on your boat and move on with their journey. They seam more often interested in Sailboats with speed and rudder motion. - Send a call immediately to the authorities giving your position. Again the is just a guess... I hope it is useful. Cheers.
@@BDTraining I was just making a statement. I think that all opinions are valid. So it does not matter if it comes from a Scientist, Sailor, Fisherman or Dog trainer...
Finally a report from someone who was there... that behaviour does mimic a lot of Orca hunting behaviour attacking seals. I’ve seen some amazing behaviour and had even better described by witnesses. I wonder if they are trying to get humans off the boat? They could smash a sailboat easily if they wanted.
Maybe they know sailboats don't have things that could kill them like a fishing boat does? So it's the safer option for them to do something with. I think they are communicating something. They want their area back and want their food back, they are starving and dying out. If they wanted to kill the humans they could, so it's not for food - which leaves for fun or to communicate.
scientific community as such deserves it - instead of being hyperbolic with prognostications just go back to hypothesis study and say we just dont know - completely reasonable position. Social media breaking news science doesnt work and pushes academics into their fatal character flaw pettiness.
or maybe its the journalists reporting 'scientists say' who are making up shit on what scientists are saying. We won't know, since no one goes to the original primary source and studies it. Not even the journalists reporting the supposed scientific sources themselves, ironically
I'd seen this film, too, and wondered if the local fishermen were throwing fish refuse from cleaning catch over the side in bucketloads. They tell folks not to feed bears in national parks because it conditions the bears to associate humans with a handout and risks them developing aggression - and I asked myself if this group had associated boats with fish carcasses being chucked. Boat has no food, they beat the crap out of the boat... I know, I know - everyone has a hypothesis. Just my Wondering.
I don't think "cleaning fish" is the cause here because the bulk of the scale fish (I'm at Cascais right now) are caught by big trawlers and the smaller boats seem to operate more inshore in search of crabs using pots (I've seen markers in depths only to 450 metres). My guess is that's simply a party trick developed by just one pod, just like the "spinner" dolphins; David Attenborough puts that down to just a group of dolphins discovering that they can spin when they jump. Whatever it is, Orcas are now the last thing I want to see when I sail to Panama shortly.
Just found your channel off of this video and I watched your other one on the myths about dog training. I really like your thinking and I wish you great success on RUclips!
Sure, but then tell your audience how your credibility differs from theirs. What makes you part of that small group of trainers that everyone has heard about?
This whole video is this guy talking about how scientists have no idea why whales are doing this. Just saved you 9 minutes and 15 seconds of time wasted. You’re welcome.
The truth is that your guess about the reason for these attacks is also as uncertain as the other theories. However I do agree with you that to my own eye, these orcas are actively hunting boats like prey.
Because they have incredible memory and it's probably where their babies were poached to go live in small prisons for life for monetary gain(orca's morn their entire lifetime when they lose a family member). No amount of forgiveness forgives what Joel's been a part of and supported.
The first 7:45mins are painful to listen to, just skip to this place and he gives you his grand theory. I have a theory; It's only the baby orcas that are going after these rudders. I think the adults are training their offspring to hunt whales by attacking boats. Teaching them how to disable whales by targeting their mobility. The adults are just nearby, they aren't attacking the sailboats.
You talk about scientists but your title promises you breaking down the actual video yet you do nothing of the sort. You talk about scientist behavior more than the whales. Misleading title, bad video. This is bad.
I don’t discredit your experience but as a lay person I’m pretty sure they are not whales they are dolphins they were called killer whales after whalers in South America encountered them attacking whales and named them ballenas asesinas which translates to killer whales . But I may be wrong …
Thanks for logic. I’ve always been happy Orcas have not appeared to attack humans. But, being a lifetime Scuba diver. I’ve not ever been in the water with Orcas. I think it’s wisdom to be cautious around something that big. I think if I were in the proximity of something that literally is dominant in the ocean. Common sense says, get back in boat. Cuz no one really knows.
It's obviously one of two things. Either they're just doing this as part of some Tik Tok challenge, or dolphins put graffiti on the bottoms of the boats calling the killer whales nasty names. 🙂
I saw a video the other day where they theorized that the orcas were practicing hunting for fun. He was noting the difference between the way dolphins follow and play around the boat as apposed to orcas since orcas are closely related to dolphins. I wish i knew how to find it again because it looked very plausible.
That was when Orca follow the boat and ride the waves that the boat makes. Ramming the boat for long periods of time and just following a boat are two different things. The dolphins ride in the front; Orcas follow in the back.
Having trained "tens of thousands of dogs" doesn't make your guess any more plausible than others. Your work with captive orcas gives you more credibility than, say, me, since I've never worked with orcas. But captive orcas might behave differently from wild ones, and you'd be more believable if you admitted your guess is also a guess.
Is what he's saying about what orcas can do false? I'm guessing but I would think that before even working with captive orcas, he would study wild ones as well, no? But regardless...is what he's saying about orca behavior wrong? All you have to do is watch videos on RUclips about how cruel orcas can be. Then his guess would be more believable. Not just that but having had hands on experience makes him way more believable than those who study from a distance...by a mile!
Wow a dog trainer who used to work with captive whales knows what’s happening. Who’d argue with a zoo keeper he’d obviously know more than everyone else.
Maybe it's because Orcas have incredible memory and it's probably where their babies were poached to go live in small prisons for life for monetary gain(orca's morn their entire lifetime when they lose a family member). No amount of forgiveness forgives what Joel's been a part of and supported.
In 1972 there was an interesting attack on a sailboat and the Orcas actually sunk the sail boat all the people got into a tiny dingy and the Orcas didn't attack the dingy with humans which they could have very easily flipped it over but not once did the Orcas attack the dingy. Which is very weird and it's mostly sail boats being attacked, could there be something on a sail boat that they don't like?.
I have heard of a killer whale attacking a long liner after being shot at. Killer whales eat Greenland halibut of the long line and that is huge loss of income for the fishermen. The story goes that after shooting at the killer whale it slammed into the side of the long liner head first.
So you think they shouldn’t say anything at all if they dont have proof to back up their opinion? Thats how we figure things out. Process of elimination. These videos gets people talking
They have no idea what they’re talking about, climate change, overfishing, etc is the easy and lazy answer. Go read all the articles about this, you’ll see that’s always the “party line” because scientists and college professors have an agenda. Or don’t say anything at all. In my video I didn’t give an answer because I don’t know the answer and I’m not narcissistic enough to think I do or that people want to hear me guess.
I personally think one of them was hit by one of these boats. I’m not speaking from facts nor am I an expert just my personal opinion. These are intelligent mammals so they kno what they are doing and its definitely for a reason.
I love orcas. They have always been my favorite. Hearing your opinions and experience is very interesting. Would love to hear more of your opinions on captivity vs sea pens. Thank you for sharing.
@@jessicaj8564 no, I actually wanted sn educated opinion. I am not a supporter of captivity or breeding. I have seen different opinions for the orcas who only know captivity. They can not hunt, prone to infections etc. I do not support Sea World at all.
@@stacygarrison7991 They’re best to be free in the ocean & never captured or bred in captivity. No need for them to be angry in the wild, they’re just exploring their environment.
@@stacygarrison7991 They should be free, however in order for people to care and exercise conservation we have to relate to it. If we can't see it, feel it, experience it, etc. we don't care. I'm gonna put this out there.... Given the huge numbers of refugees that cross the Mediterranean on small boats with lots of these boats capsizing and the occupants never being seen again, it is conceivable that the Orcas have fed off these terrible situations. They're intelligent enough to, then, link food to small boats. Perhaps the behaviour is the same as we see when they knock penguins off small lumps of floating ice.
Agreed! This is done to sharks too! Whenever there is an attack experts want to make the shark seem as harmless and friendly as they can. They are so careful as to not vilify sharks. So instead of just stating the obvious.....that a shark attacked a person to kill and eat them. Simple! They try to push attacks off on "mistaken identity" and the shark thought a surfer was a seal 😳 Im pretty sure sharks by now know what seals look, smell and move like! Plus if you watch footage of sharks attacking seals its not the same as how most surfers are attacked by sharks. MANY attacks arent reported or reported with water down facts as to not scare tourists away from vacation spots. Places like the Bahamas interact and feed the sharks for tourism. This has caused sharks to correlate humans with food. Experts so many times are just WRONG!
There are many different species of shark. I’m pretty sure it’s not so much a case of ‘mistaken identity’ as it is curiosity or desperation. Maybe some expectation/association, who knows?
To avoid having to listen to this annoying bloke saying "They've no idea" over and over again, the answer is: "The killer whales weren't going crazy, they were going killer whale."
@@BDTraining kind of hard to disagree really. You didn't give anything to agree or disagree with except its a 'killer whale' lol I realize a lot of theories are dumb but there are probable and intriguing theories that create intelligent discussion and debate. This was just you calling people dumb and offering nothing insightful or thought provoking to back yourself up 🤔
I actually have laughed out loud at some things I read or hear people say about animal behavior . One of the funniest ones was about a Lion who missed catching it's prey and the narrator was saying the lion was embarrassed ! I never heard that one before but something tells me they dont have that emotion . We all know dogs have the knowledge of when they do something the are not supposed to do , like dumping the trash can and when you walk in the room the look away and know they did wrong . I dont think it's embarrassment , but they know when they do something wrong . I would guess a Whale trainer has a better idea of what these whales can act like . Just watch them coordinate a seal hunt on a chunk of ice , they will rock the ice to make him slide off or even join together to make a big wave to knock him off . Killer whales are very smart and these ones may have wanted to knock someone off the boat to eat them , who knows ? What if they are not in a regular pod with adults to teach them , and they are trying anything they can to get food ? And what he said , "We are lucky they dont eat humans " ......... SO FAR !
I appreciate your attempt to make it more palatable . You should be careful what you mean by anthropomorphic. Scientists try to look at animal behavior without human attributes. Scientists don't try to "control" people. They have the animal's best interest in mind, most of the time. You say that you have experience with orcas. this means you are proud of being a prison guard. You participated in one of the most heinous forms of torture to an animal. You supported locking orcas in a closet. Orcas that are arguably as intelligent as we are. Unfortunately they can't fight us as efficiently as they can their prey. You disappoint me.I don't follow you. I hope two years later, you have adjusted your perception of what is happening. Self-importance is not attractive on any level.
Hey Joel this is very interesting! Was just wondering is this happening just in the same area all the time (maybe same pod of whales has anyone checked the injuries to see if they match)? Or are there other cases like this throughout our oceans? Has this started just resently or has it happened before many years ago? Be interesting if they are using the boats to simulate or train their young in whale attacking techniques... a lot of animals are always showing their young how to do things... Also whats your theory on whales and dolphins getting washed up on beaches?
They have observed this behaviour in the past, but not often. It appears this is a much more coordinated and targeted atrack in that its only directed towards sailboats with engines running. Which therefore suggests the ocres made a negative association with just this kind of vessel.
@@charlottestandage2765 The sound of the engine drawing them does not automatically equate to a negative association. 1. it could just be that a running engine makes the boat more detectable. 2. Orcas often use training/teaching aids. It is possible they're using sailboats as low risk training/teaching aides. E.g. when orcas target a baby seal, then use it like a tennis ball, then discard it, there's no hard feelings or negative associations. The small seal is being used as a training aide. There are orcas in Argentina risking beaching themselves to catch seaweed on the beach...it's just training...the orcas have no beef with seaweed...lol. 3. Orcas are not known for being particularly vengeful. The Norwegians used to hunt and eat them until recently...they'd even do this in row boats...for centuries. By contrast, Tigers on the other hand are notoriously vengeful...they'll sometimes track down a specific individual with an almost singular obsession to violently kill that specific individual in a premeditated fashion, after being offended by that individual. Tigers have attacked boats and even helicopters. And when they attack humans it typically involves poachers when the reasons are investigated. Boats and helicopters are used in poaching. If orcas were extremely vengeful like humans and tigers, you'd expect them to have been attacking boats and those on the boats since a long time ago. Btw, vengefulness is an adaptation some species have...and some don't.
It’s a fair comment regarding opinions from experts. But these are the times we live in. However, didn’t you find it intriguing that these killer whales were not only ramming the hull of the boat but the rudder as well. In all cases, it seems there was a concerted effort to disable the rudder. I think we don’t give them enough credit in the intelligence stakes. They’re smarter than we think or know.
I really like your explanation of what you think it might be. The videos that I have watched with the whales going after boats reminds me of the way they will go after the ice that a seal will be on so the seal will fall in the water. Whales are very organized and amazing hunters. I'm no expert but I think they are doing what whales do which is hunt.
People assumed not 50+% of born in captivity whales die before they reach adulthood. The wild is a brutal place, must be terribly hard to get to that number *in captivity*.
This video made some good points such as the fact that they are capable of calculation and emotion. But that doesnt necessarily negate the other theories either? Just provided a different perspective, which was needed.
So to summarize this video: scientists have no clue what are they talking about because ...why? They don't have hands on training experience with captive whales like you do? Seriously? Did you even bother to check the credentials of the person who wrote the article? Probably not. That's why science is a science. It's a subject to peer review, fact check, scientific method. You remind me of my falconer friend who thinks he knows EVERYTHING about wildlife management just because he hunts with his birds every day in the field. Please don't be that guy. What's your argument except for repeating that they don't know what are they talking about? :) Maybe they spent their entire career observing behavior of wild orcas, unlike you who trained orcas in captivity. Who has more applicable knowledge? The guy wrote that orcas probably would not attack a human if it fell in water, and you say they don't know that. Yes, they don't, but there is this thing called statistic, pretty important tool in science. How many attacks are recorded by wild orcas on humans? Not in captivity. I was a bit shocked by this video, to be honest, and just wanted to give you my feedback. On the other hand I immensely enjoy your dog training videos, I think you are a breath of fresh wind.
I appreciate him being thorough atleast reading through someone’s full answer . Words have meaning, and points that are told to masses mean that much more . I’m honestly sure the person that wrote it just wanted to inform people or what they thought they knew , not spook the public , and share their opinion .
This is exactly why I refuse to refer to killer whales as orcas. People who do are trying to make them seem more "personable" and "friendly" but let's be realistic here. We are not on their menu because they choose not to put us there! So show some goddamn respect! And calling them orcas is not respectful. So I don't do it. And I ask other people not to
When I saw the video, I thought it was just adolescent whales messing around and horse-playing. I figured if a killer whale wants to kill ....everyone in that video would be dead.
I slightly get your point. However this video seems to be more about your problem with scientists or understanding science. Your anecdotal stories are interessting but provie no real answers. Your explanation ''killer whales'' just went ''killer whale'' falls short of reason and arguments. Your cynicism towards science seems to be an internal problem caused by negative experiences?
As in they are aware that humans are contributing to the rise of water temps and are retaliating or that they are more agitated because temps are higher?
@@deankruse2891 even scientists aren’t dumb enough to think the whales know humans contribute to CC. But many scientists believe ocean life behavior is changing due to CC.
@@BDTraining haha well I am dumb enough to interpret what you said as scientists believe whales are vengefully targeting boats because they drive climate change.
@@BDTraining this seems like a culturally specific trait to this population or pod, they find something entertaining about boats and seek them out. Other than entertainment, what do they get out of it? There have been dozens of reported interactions with nothing but a damaged rudder to report, seems like they enjoy Fing with boats and lose interest once the boat stops.
It has started around Gilbraltar. Imagine small wooden boats with an outboard motor stuffed with illegal immigrants heading across the Gibraltar Strait to Spain. Couple that with the lack of natural food of Orcas and you have another possible theory. It sound macabre but I truly believe that they capsized these small boats and eaten off the (remains) of these poor immigrants. Explains the behaviour of them towards these sailing vessels.
Readers online have instant access to Google search, for example; the curious among us will want to expand their knowledge -- so what better time to start? Enter the mysterious word, and Bingo! Anthro: man; morphism: shape, form, or structure. In short, attributing to animals the characteristics of humans.
Speaking as a sailor who is planning a trip to Gibraltar from UK next year I'm following this topic to find out what to do about it because I sure don't want it to happen to me. A lot say switch everything off and drift and they'll lose interest, one said motor in reverse but it seems nobody really knows what to do as yet.
They have a brain twice our size, and are far too intelligent for not making a difference between a wale and a boat. I suspect they either had traumatic encounter with a fisherboat which turned them against boats or they were exposed to an infection or toxins that modified their condition. The prior is much more probable, as it is area for fishing.
When tiger goes tiger. At the end. This to me is the instinct of a predator to kill something because it is hungry. The plan for every predator is to go after something that offers a meal with the use of very little energy and minimal injury. If a tiger saw two deer. One was injured. Instantly would go for the injured one. If a human appears injured to a hungry Tiger, that is an ideal kill
"These killer whales went killer whale" after their pod members where slaughtered and they were left alone to fend for themselves. I wonder who slaughtered their family? Hint: They are in direct competition with the Bluefin tuna fishery of the Mediterranean sea.

Plus, I do not stand by my 'facts'. Degrees used to imply credibility, I keep forgetting they're pretty meaningless now. Even if my source was impeccable, my memory is not. Twenty-five years ago my brother-in-law was asking: "How are we going to know when Heidi gets Alzheimer's?"
@Beckman's Dog Training Unsolicited (probably unwelcome) request for topic of next Orca vid? This one left me unsatisfied in one way. Of course your explanation is the only 100% accurate one. But it's a little disingenuous also because your conclusion is kind of a given. Cetaceanologists ( I think I just made that up) maybe don't point to their nature because... duh. Okay, you're probably right, until you, no one ever mentioned that this typifies their nature/skill set outloud (sshhh) especially the Orca apologists, like the ones selling killer whale stuffies at Sea World. Perhaps your kindof underlying obvious truth is not being said by the scientists because... duh. (And I suspect real scientists think about Newsweek the same way the MH field thinks about Psychology Today. NO kind of credible source. But you knew that, I'm thinking, right?). But the problem here is that you have said NOTHING with 'Orcas being Orcas' that specifically addresses this sailboat ramming/rudder biting. You completely avoided that subject. Orcas have so many varied behaviors for different situations, we only even know about a few. But the one thing that unifies all of the behaviors humans have observed in them is intentionality. Their behavior is always goal-directed, even when we do not know why, they do. This sailboat/rudder ramming is a brand new, spontaneously emerging, drastically different behavior that has not been observed in hundreds of years (other than a few isolated incidents). For you to act like the Why does not matter is to ignore an rare under-our-noses evolutionary phenomenon, a missed interesting opportunity. To ignore the question of Why (in my opinion, again, no actual facts here) - is also potentially dangerous. If we do not know why, we cannot predict whether or not this is going to escalate. Will they start taking on different sized vessels, or ones differently powered? Maybe canoes, or smallcraft daysail boats, or whalers? (probably are none near Gibraltar? no clue). Without knowing what the intention is - and because these are orcas we know that there is one - we don't know if 30 - 60 minutes will continue to satisfy in the future. We don't know if the behavior will spread to other pods or extinguish with the new certain-sized sailboat restriction - or do they move on to bigger boats, enlist more of the pod? We also know this is goal-driven because orcas are being hurt in the execution of the ramming of the boats and that doesn't slow them down for a second. As a non-boat owner, I can say these videos are quite beautiful, the relentless coordinated coming back and back and back through the waves for more and more strikes on the hull, again and again. Exactly like when they go after prey, except here, they eat nothing. You just dismissed the Why of it because we can't read animals' minds, so it's unknowable (if I misunderstood, please correct). And of course you are right, we can't - even among animals, scientists have always maintained that orcas are among the most intelligent, incredibly social and feel emotions, like grief, deeply. (recently, as one of their hypotheses, both the German and the international research groups are using the word "revenge".). So it's going to be complex and maybe take years to understand. But people like you that know them as well as a human can (from something other than a symposium or research paper like the scientists) have the most to offer to the effort (again, in my opinion). I know nothing. I just feel like this is too important to leave to just scientists to figure out. As far as I know, from the beginning of ocean voyages, boats have always traveled without fear of attack from life in the sea. (Nature, yes. Other humans, you betcha. A harpooned whale every now and then? If albino, maybe. Ocean predators/sharks if you were overboard - oh my yes. Sirens, Circe, Nessie? Not so much.). This ramming (I think) is a Never Before! Ocean life for the first time is coming for us! Yes, very small scale, and very targeted ( and I'm obviously excluding crocodiles hippos rhinoceros etcetera, because although aggressive I'm not sure they are a part of ocean life). I can't help thinking this is important, even if no one has died yet. Interesting and important, and you looked so bored and thought it was so simple, just because they were orcas. Whatever their reason is, it seems to be very important to them.
Welp, this is disrespectful to researchers. You do realize that their conclusions of killer whale behavior is based on repeating patterns of behavior, right? This is done with all research of animals. You just sound like you know it all and everyone else, even with a degree and experience, are wrong. Get off your high ground. Make sure to eat some humble pie.
The dude literally wrote in one of his comments here "I don’t believe anything any expert says because when it comes to animals everyone has an agenda. Except me, I don’t care..." What kind of a pompous сunt would write something like that and expect to be taken seriously?
They kill Great White sharks for what looks like sport. Other than a giant squid, not sure if anything could take one out. Doubt they ever cross paths. If they actively hunted humans, it would be crazy to get in the water. Make eye contact with one and you will know it ain't no fish.
I'd be interested to hear if you have any thoughts on the more recent attacks, hopefully there's enough recorded evidence that we can at least guess why it's happening now!
So Orca is swimming his territory. A sailboat comes out and shuts everything down and now drifts. Orca plays around dismantling the boat. The pod makes a game of this. Rinse and repeat multiple times a week. This is the advice given to boaters who spot Orca.....shut it down and drift. Dumb advice.
Lol... this guy talks about how ppl don’t know but then goes on to say “I know...” He said probably but The other ppl used the word probably and such as well.. But hears the real answer.... no one knows jack.... they can only make probable assertions based on their own knowledge.
In a way, it‘s super-anthropomorphic hubris. Same with wolves. „Oh these poor animals would never attack humans, they are more afraid of us than vice versa, blah blah“. Why wouldn’t they though? Plus Orcas are the bullies of the ocean. It‘s kinda in character for them. But the zeigeist is like „humans are the real apex predator/animals/monsters“ - yeah maybe, but we try not to be and animals that may know how we used to hunt them will forget this sooner or later.
You said something I was thinking! The part about the fish! I've heard that there has been a lot of over fishing all over that side of the pond! I was also thinking that the whales are associating the boats with taking away their food supplies! Now if that were the case then the whales should be skinny or at least skinnier than other killer whales from other places what do you think?
You bring up a lot of good points. I took my son fishing a while ago, all the sea lions just followed our boat and ate the fish off everyones line and there are reports of killer whales doing the same as well as corralling large whales for whaling ships hundreds of years ago because the fisherman would throw them the tongue. My point is the overfishing argument doesn’t make sense to me. Would they be skinnier? Whales are weird in that they don’t carry weight like other animals, they really don’t get terribly fat or skinny, it’s odd but true. I don’t believe anything any expert says because when it comes to animals everyone has an agenda. Except me, I don’t care, I’m just going to tell people what I think is true from working with so many animals over the years.
What is odd is that these are three juvenile Orcas alone without the members that make up and intact pod, which consist of older females and males. Why are the adults missing?
This is fascinating.thankyou for sharing your knowledge on this. Gonna watch the vid i notice there of your working with them later...can't wait ..you are so interesting...like the perfect dinner guest...could listen to you for hours.but really enjoyed this insight
Just a thought, after seeing videos looking for possible damage to the vessel after the event, I noticed the color and shape resembled an upside down male orca, maybe they’re just checking it out ?, I can see an experiment on this one, paint the hull a different color ??? After that I think the summation is correct - orca just going orca .
@Nic B it started with a bump, and ended with a juvenile whale having a hard on just off of Mexico- not a news story, there are photos in my friends collection.
I got a very plausible theory I think. Orcas are known for their incredible memory in ways humans can’t even imagine. They remember things and events for years. I think maybe the hull or something on a sailboat around Spain accidentally severely injured or hurt a cub. It could be any member of the pod really but I digress. I think they remember this and are getting aggressive towards something that hurt a family member. If this was a matter of them just being mad over food I don’t buy it and this would happen way more often. This is why I think it’s happening just around the Spanish coast.
Most likely the orcas that attack hold a grudge against sailboats for some reason (yes orcas can hold a grude like no other animals...), most likely they have gotten rammed by sailboats in the past as they are silent in the water and they do not hear they coming... Orcas is hurd animals and if one orca hold a grudge against something and attack it the other also learns to do the same. . . .
@@a64738 exactly! I think we both are on to something here. I don’t think we really understand yet the brain power these mammals have. They’re brains are six times the size of ours and they’re languages are so complicated we can’t understand it yet. Orcas and dolphins in general are just so amazing and intelligent it’s almost beyond comprehension in a way. I like watching some of John Hargrove’s interviews. He’s got some incredible stories of how massively intelligent they are.
I think this video perfectly sumarizes how flawed people's mentality about wild animals is. In the past few decades, especially with all that Free Willy and Blackfish stuff, people have started seeing orcas much more romantically, saying that "killer" is a stereotype for them and that in reality they are very sweet and cuddly animals and if you meet them in the wild you can just go swimming with them. This video completely reverted what people have thought. It ads a dozen incidents to other orca attacks against humans that have occured in the wild and it reminds us once again what we should have never forgotten: orcas aren't to laugh about.
i get so worked up to but not with people just second guessing what a killer whales intensions are, but with like small pets. Like hamsters :"")) "oh look how cute my hamster is dancing for me" also the hamster running around in a circle doing backflips which is a stress stimuli and none of they natural behaviours are met. And people are laughing like they know what's going on. And sometimes i ask the customers "how do you know why your pet it doing that" and usually they can never answer that question... i'm just lost for words.
I hate when people talk about killer whales like they are all free willy and could never be aggressive towards humans. Coming from someone that grew up watching free willy on repeat as a child and thinking I wanted to swim with them. No way I'd do that now.
I used to think if you were good enough with dogs you could avoid being bitten till I got in the fence with an aggressive pit pull thinking I could calm him down... nope he bit me immediately.
So a few door up from us, a family rented a home. There teenage kids were a menace to the Neighbourhood . The Parents were not much better and thought it was funny how their kids dominated all the other children, including kids as young as 6. All the other people in the neighbourhood were in general, kind, caring, respectful and like me, scared of this family. But these guys are just basically JERKS. It's my guess, this family of killer whales, is just a bunch of JERKS. I know there will be people that will call me out, screaming how humans have destroyed the Killer whale's habitat. Stole their food. And yes we have. But I am not convinced this is a revenge attack. Sailers, in general, have one of the smallest footprints on Earth. They are the good guys. They do not deserve this. So imagine this. BREAKING NEWS! Monkeys and Gorillas go on rampage. Destroy homes and drive away 50 home owners. Suspected reason, 1 monkey looked wounded! Who is next? lol.. I'm not a whale trainer, a dog trainer, and this is a very uneducated opinion, but I think, these killer whales, are just JERKS!
I don't know why this video has that many dislikes. Academics do this stuff all the time. Academics live in the land of theory. Often times their world views slip into their scientific lives, and they tend to construct theoretical models based on their own biases or beliefs. That's not the say I'm against academic theory, or scientists. Of course I'm not. I'm just saying that people need to understand that scientists aren't gods. There's all sorts of stuff they don't understand, as well as speculate about. And unless they're experts in a very particular field, and have the passion to match, most of the time they're winging it. Also, politicizing the orcas? They're angry because of climate change? lol. Yeah, that's just what we need.
When scientists can't pinpoint a behavior, they just make up a new term for it. I have deep respect for scientists, but when it comes to animal behavior, the only experts are the animals.
Yes 💯🙌

As a professional Sailor, here is what I would suggest other sailors to do:
- Avoid approaching the group at all cost
- If you notice them before they reach you, turn off your engine immediately , auto-pilot and all electronic systems and take down your sails.
Cheers.
What did I say in the video that contradicts what you just said in the comments?
@@BDTraining I was just making a statement. I think that all opinions are valid. So it does not matter if it comes from a Scientist, Sailor, Fisherman or Dog trainer...
I totally agree with you Joao.
I love how every second of this video is dogging on the scientific community.
Yeah right??
Or whaling on it?! 🤣
Covid enters the chat
scientific community as such deserves it - instead of being hyperbolic with prognostications just go back to hypothesis study and say we just dont know - completely reasonable position.

OMG thank you for the time skip!
You talk about scientists but your title promises you breaking down the actual video yet you do nothing of the sort.
You talk about scientist behavior more than the whales.
Misleading title, bad video.
This is bad.
They’re not whales!! They are the largest species of dolphin.
They are angry because
gas prices are rising
People act like humans have some sort of agreement with orcas.
It's obviously one of two things. Either they're just doing this as part of some Tik Tok challenge, or dolphins put graffiti on the bottoms of the boats calling the killer whales nasty names. 🙂
What's with the full on attack on scientists?
He didn’t really say what he thought. “ they went killer whale” on the boats doesn’t really cut it
We don't even know what's going on inside the heads of our fellow humans. How could we know what is going on in the whale's head?
I saw a video the other day where they theorized that the orcas were practicing hunting for fun. He was noting the difference between the way dolphins follow and play around the boat as apposed to orcas since orcas are closely related to dolphins. I wish i knew how to find it again because it looked very plausible.
Just tap library and scroll thtough your history.
That was when Orca follow the boat and ride the waves that the boat makes. Ramming the boat for long periods of time and just following a boat are two different things. The dolphins ride in the front; Orcas follow in the back.
@@juliew1426 you got that right & I do NOT believe they are just playing, ABSOLUTELY NOT! They are going “KILLER WHALE!”
Guess or informed supposition? Any difference? Kinda
This guy is a real one 👏🏼
The sails, for one.
Whale trainer is like a kz guard. Nobody gives a shit bro
Here's my guess. The Matriarch is pissed because one of her children was injured or killed and she's now treating boats as an enemy.
Now that makes much more sense than any other theory out there. They obviously are remembering something about sailboats only.
I love orcas. They have always been my favorite. Hearing your opinions and experience is very interesting. Would love to hear more of your opinions on captivity vs sea pens. Thank you for sharing.
Are you kidding? Captivity vs sea pens? Surely you are trolling

We don’t need to “experience” animals firsthand to care. This is such an ignorant comment
Ehhhhhh
Animals are not humans. Stop treating them like humans.
To avoid having to listen to this annoying bloke saying "They've no idea" over and over again, the answer is: "The killer whales weren't going crazy, they were going killer whale."
Yeah, so you agree with this annoying bloke
@@BDTraining kind of hard to disagree really. You didn't give anything to agree or disagree with except its a 'killer whale' lol I realize a lot of theories are dumb but there are probable and intriguing theories that create intelligent discussion and debate. This was just you calling people dumb and offering nothing insightful or thought provoking to back yourself up 🤔
the big difference between a good scientist and a sucker scientist is this simple phrase: "i don't know"
I actually have laughed out loud at some things I read or hear people say about animal behavior . SO FAR !
Ohh cats small and big do indeed feel embarrasment...
How do (YOU) know that!!.... Just another opinion delivered as a fact , you ranted then did the exact thing you ranted about
Hey Joel this is very interesting!
@@charlottestandage2765
The sound of the engine drawing them does not automatically equate to a negative association.
1. it could just be that a running engine makes the boat more detectable.
I'm no expert but I think they are doing what whales do which is hunt.
no the findings did not indicate that
if they were truly trying to hunt there would have been no survivors lol
let's start formulating many hypotheses and start testing them out in the field. I'm intrigued by all this.
You first! ;-)
👍👍 The truth: Nobody know's. why ist that so hard to say
It's obvious that Newsweek scientist didn't see the 1977 movie "Orca". just kidding
My uneducated, ignorant thought was maybe the were mistaking the rudder for an eagle ray.
I just laughed about a scientist proclaiming that a Killer Whale was mad about climate change....How the HELL did he get a degree?
You keep repeating the same thing…get to the point!
👏👏👏👏 Bravo! Thank you.
Okay, now how do I send this off? Humm...I’ve pressed every letter and button.
*tapping my fingers..
Shadow below your nose gives you a hitler stash. All I could focus on. Lol.
Heads up, no scientist has ever said that whales are angry because of climate change
You sure about that?
Can you share your knowledge on transients. Are they more aggressive in your opinion?
It has started around Gilbraltar. Imagine small wooden boats with an outboard motor stuffed with illegal immigrants heading across the Gibraltar Strait to Spain. Couple that with the lack of natural food of Orcas and you have another possible theory. It sound macabre but I truly believe that they capsized these small boats and eaten off the (remains) of these poor immigrants. Explains the behaviour of them towards these sailing vessels.
or some of the migrants or trafficer shoot or hit on the orcas and thats the reason?
If you love Orcas why would you works as a stupid Orca-trainer for peoples amusement??
by saying the word anthropomorphic, u did the same thing scientists do, because most people don't know that it means"acting like humans"
I'd love to hear your take on that female trainer who got killed some time ago. Why did that orca kill her? Thanks.
How long where you a trainer ? You definitely seemed loving and skilled with these beautiful giants 💯
I agree. The aggressive pods were mistreated by commercial fisherman.
Non-sarcastic question : Were they medium sized sailboats with rudders?
I bet there's a chance that people have been feeding them from boats.....or perhaps they are expecting spoils from fishing boats.
I bet you’re right
Shoot the Orcas that are attacking boats, doesn't matter why the Orcas are doing this... but a few bullet holes will adjust their behaviour.
I think it would be really interesting if you had these researchers on to your channel to discuss their methods and conclusions with you

So if you would just acknowledge seeing (not necessarily reading) with a checkmark or 'k' or whatever, I'll immediately delete. Thanks.
Except me, I don’t care..."
What kind of a pompous сunt would write something like that and expect to be taken seriously?
So many people have a different opinion I think none are right none this is something no one knows why orcas did this but the orca
Best explanation I’ve seen thus far since I learned how dominate they are I’ve become intrigued by Orcas
They kill Great White sharks for what looks like sport. Other than a giant squid, not sure if anything could take one out. Doubt they ever cross paths. If they actively hunted humans, it would be crazy to get in the water. Make eye contact with one and you will know it ain't no fish.
@@bullfrogger1208 🎯🎯🎯 that’s wild shit man i don’t even wanna imagine
Very good explanation. My fiancé and I watched your video and we agree with what you said. We love orcas and great whites. Stay Safe
Bro, it’s literally Disney informed man-babies refusing to accept the violent nature of the wild and wild animals.
Lol... this guy talks about how ppl don’t know but then goes on to say “I know...”
He said probably but The other ppl used the word probably and such as well..
@@BDTraining cool thanks!
Or in catching fish the nets usually drop some or the orcas can steal what is being caught on a line.
You have so far the best explanation: Killer whales kill.
Have you worked with a whale who was not so nice and that made you nervous to be near them ?
What is odd is that these are three juvenile Orcas alone without the members that make up and intact pod, which consist of older females and males. Why are the adults missing?
When i first seen this i thought it was like they were trying to hunt like they do when chasing seals on ice and trying to flip it off.
This is fascinating.thankyou for sharing your knowledge on this.
Gonna watch the vid i notice there of your working with them later...can't wait ..you are so interesting...like the perfect dinner guest...could listen to you for hours.but really enjoyed this insight
I’ve watched the videos, they are only attacking sailboats, which look like fins under the water. If you look at underwater footage.
In a nutshell it looks like an upside down male orca, if you review the films the female orca are coming in behind the boat upside down.
Orcas are smart enough to know the difference between a boat and a real orca lmao
A sailer friend had a whale try to mate with his sailboat.
@Nic B it started with a bump, and ended with a juvenile whale having a hard on just off of Mexico- not a news story, there are photos in my friends collection.
Yep. These days EVERYBODY has an opinion and loves to blog about it. zzzzzzzzzzz
Killer whales and dolphins have similar behaviour ❤️ from Tamilnadu state, India 🇮🇳
Maybe because of the lack of tuna, they are using boats to teach their young how to hunt. No tuna means no training to catch tuna🤷♀️
Finally the truth is put out there, thank you
i get so worked up to but not with people just second guessing what a killer whales intensions are, but with like small pets.
I'd like to hear more of Beckman's thoughts on SeaWorld
They’re angry because the internet running throughout our fuckin oceans how has nobody put this together
