  • This month's special topic lecture was all about the concept of Titration, what it is, why it is important, as well as some examples of the different traumas we stored (shock trauma, early trauma), and how we might titrate (and heal) pending these different scenarios. I dive into some hypothetical examples as well so you can understand the complexity of this level of healing and learning, and also why having the basics of nervous system health and its foundations on board is essential so you can navigate as much as possible.
    Here are some Questions/Topics I discuss in this chat:
    4:37 - Background of how Irene got into this work
    8:25 - Early childhood trauma/connection
    9:34 - Ability to go with the flow when triggered/stressed
    11:53 - 1-1 help
    14:12 - What is Titration?
    16:51 - Healing stored survival stress (fight/flight/freeze)
    19:33 - Developmental Trauma
    21:16 - Fight/Flight/Freeze
    24:40 - Syndromes of trapped survival stress as an adult
    28:05 - Autonomic Nervous System and interconnectedness
    30:29 - How do you titrate when life doesn’t ‘allow you’
    33:32 - How to know when titrating or ‘hiding’
    35:34 - Signs of building capacity and becoming more regulated
    39:07 - Why not one way of healing works for us all
    43:09 - Titration and feeling all the emotions (and pendulation)
    49:38 - Working with freeze and fear (feeling it but not being afraid of it)
    51:25 - Feeling healthy aggression (fight response)
    53:33 - Fear of ‘kill energy’
    57:38 - Building capacity
    58:15 - Behaviour changes
    1:01:39 - What if I can't titrate
    1:02:07 - Working with organs/body parts
    1:04:06 - Too much too soon
    1:05:17 - Learning to be with our bodies in the capacity we can
    1:07:09 - Sickness and trauma, stored stress, toxicity etc...

    For me personally, this has been the most exciting videos you've made because the Universe gave me the opportunity two days ago to move into a trauma memory, fully connect, feel it, act out and fully move through the after effects of the trauma! It was incredible. It unfolded over about 6 hours but I wasn't fully aware of what the actual process was until the next morning after a good night's sleep. This work is so freeing! And not just for me. I do it for my mother, her mother and whoever else I'm here to do it for. Thank you Irene and your Dream Team!

    This is the information I’ve been praying for. I had all these nervous system responses and I’ve been in fight flight and freeze for 3 years and have gotten ill which has led to chronic shoulder chest neck pain and also dealing with very stressful work I felt I could not manage anymore. I felt like I had no space to heal and unwind, it was one day to another and I was depressed that this is the world I/we live in. I felt like something was wrong with me like I could not work or be like other people. Now I know my nervous system got too much at once and too much for too long.

    I’m new here, however, I’ve been on my healing journey for more than 15 years now. I’ve been avoiding, numbing, disassociation, fleeing from my life. I realize where ever I go there I am. I was so ashamed and embarrassed about the trauma I had to deal with in my childhood. I was molested at age 11-18. An abortion at age 12 and kidnapped at age 15. It was a daily war zone. Emotional, physical, mental, and sexual, I was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer in 2017. I’m in a much better space however, I realize that healing is not a destination but a journey. I had to change my relationship with myself and food. Healing is hard but very necessary.

    My first major catharsis happened about 30 years ago, with movement (somatic) therapist, Catherine Fallis of Vancouver, who, like Ms Lyon, studied with Peter Levine. I was exhausted afterwards, but it was the first time in my life, when I had felt any sense of inner peace.
    Since then, and especially after my mum passed away three years ago, I have been able to go into myself and my body, releasing different energies that have brought me back to heal, not only my own traumatic experiences, but those of my mum and of my grandmother, both of whom had very traumatic lives of their own.
    I am grateful for living in a time when I now have the freedom to let this healing happen. It has been an incredible journey for me, and I will continue to follow it, as it brings me more and more into the light. ❤

    Great explanations! I’ve been a little unsure about when to push, when to reel it in, and what to do at different times. I have very little capacity but I’m also determined to get well. Sometimes that’s not a good combination as I will go too far. You so nailed it when you said it’s trial and error and sometimes you’re going to go to far but that’s how you learn where your “lines” are. This was super helpful and well done! Thank you!

    I would be interested in how this work would help me, as I'm not in 'freeze' as my therapist explained, but more stuck in 'flight and sometimes dissociate '. Most of your videos seem to relate to coming out of freeze. The problem with me is I am too aware of my anxious internal state, and struggle to become unaware of it. Therefore how do I titrate when it's all I ever feel and can't seem to focus on anything else if have anxiety for hours?

    • @teamlyon3109
      @teamlyon3109 2 года назад +4

      Hi Elliot98, Jen here from Team Lyon. Irene does teach about flight and flight too, I'll link to a related video in case you want to check it out.
      When we're feeling a lot of sensation, sometimes doing some movement each day (even 5 or 10 minutes) can be helpful. It may also help to focus very briefly on the sensations and then shift attention elsewhere. I'll link a few of Irene's related resources here too.
      Other times, this too can be too much and instead we need to focus on access to internal safety and then noticing and connecting to the external world from this place.

    Hi Irene and Team, apologies for the direct questions and thank you in advance for your help. Is it normal that exhaustion comes with panic attack after 9 months into the therapy?It was very bad, it did teach me self-compassion. First time in my life I HAD to understand what that is. When will these sensations end? I understand that these sensations are teaching us, but it is very difficult to live your life if every day is an "experiment" it feels like there is no stability. A clinical psychologist told me 1.5 year (traditional methods). I am getting mentally, emotionally very tired. :-(

    • @teamlyon3109
      @teamlyon3109 2 года назад +5

      Hi selyemperzsa, Seth here with team Lyon. If you are wanting to recover and heal from unresolved trauma then it is very unlikely that a clinical psychologist will be able to help you. Psychology, psychiatry, counselling - these modalities can be useful for helping people understand themselves better at some levels, and may provided management strategies for gaining more stability, but they most likely will not teach you about the sensations you are experiencing, what they mean, or how to work with them. For that you need this work, which includes what this video is all about - titration! It sounds like whoever you were working with did way too much, as exhaustion and a panic attack is generally not the result of 9 months of good, nervous system informed work.

  • @Lilredjeanie

    Without watching the video I have something to say about titration and this work you do. Education isn't enough and that's basically all you offer. Because when your nervous system is out of regulation you simply don't know your limits. So it's impossible to learn titration if you don't even recognize your limits. And for that you NEED someone who is better regulated to NOTICE your limits and TELL you when your nervous system is going off so you can learn that too. You NEED go-regulation. I was banging my head against the wall with all of this information since I found your channel 1,5 years ago and as much as I felt validated at the beginning with knowing that everything that's happening in me is not anything to be ashamed of and there are so many people out there suffering with what I'm suffering too it didn't actually help me with my nervous system regulation at all. Mostly it worked the opposite way and I started to feel overwhelmed and out of function the more I watched these videos. Feeling the overwhelming sensations and feelings when you don't have the capacity to do that or capacity to stop or titrate is dangerous. It's exhausting. None of your videos have any example of how the titration actually happens. It would be somewhat helpful to see sessions like that. Luckily I managed to find a somatic experience practitioner couple months ago from another country who has been able to notice and tell me when I'm going off before it happens and I have been able to stay connected and actually release something from my system. I didn't have any clue that I was going off but when she gently slowed my process and shifted my attention from not going too far I was able to notice it myself. This has never happened before - not consciously anyway and I realized why things have gone the way they have with following your guidance. I wonder can guidance without connection ever be truly helpful especially when you work with people whose regulation is dysfunctioning. There are risks. I hope people would know and be informed about this. You obviously have very good regulation so we never see the dysfunctioning changes or processes in you. We also always see only the stories and talks with people when everything has gone well. But that's not the full reality. It would be so helpful to see at least some footage of the ACTUAL work with people whose nervous systems are dysregulated. All of this is just lecturing. It leaves so many missing puzzles. It just information for the addicted mind which is already dissociated from the body in the beginning. After watching couple of your videos all of the rest have been just repeating the same information and pattern all over again in a bit different forms. I would like to see some development with this channel. I would like to see someone to show me instead of just ranting. When I was looking for a SE practitioner one of them who I had a meeting with said she sometimes hates what you do because it's like you rip off the bandage from people and then leave them abandoned. There's no attachment. There's no accountability. Those are harsh words I know but I can understand her reaction. I have felt the same and I have compassion for her and my own experience and anyone who might have felt the same. The fact is that many people (especially those who would need it the most) don't have the privilidge for expensive practitioners let alone have access to good practitioners in their country. I'm watching this from a small country with population of total 5,5 million people. We have a huge shortage for trauma-informed therapists. We have only 3 people (in the whole country) with SE -license. This text is a personal feedback from my path and experience so far. I will continue following your channel although I'm having a conscious break watching these videos.

      Hi Annastiina, Seth here with Team Lyon. Thanks for expressing yourself. It is certainly true that we need to do the actual work along with the education, and I just want to clarify that Irene offers both. The RUclips channel is mostly education based yes, though there is also this playlist of practical neurosensory exercises, meaning videos for helping one DO the work... ruclips.net/p/PL_tIcR-r0CU5Xss_Mq1buU-tWdYVQksjI
      But also, this channel is only part of what Irene offers. She also has created a whole suite of online offerings for people to do the work, and she did this because, as you say, not everyone can afford, or even access, a good practitioner. There are here free resources which include many neurosensory exercises - irenelyon.com/free-resources-2/ , her monthly drop in class - irenelyon.com/drop-in-class-1, her 21 Day Tune Up - 21daytuneup.com/ , and her once-a-year intensive SmartBody SmartMind - smartbodysmartmind.com/. All of these are ways of doing the work along with learning about it, and both the 21 Day program and SBSM include support from our team of professionals.
      This kind of online form of the work is self-directed though, for sure, and while there are thousands of alumni who have greatly benefitted, for some people one-on-one work is a better fit, and if one can find a good practitioner then that is great! I'm very glad you have found someone to work with!

    Hi Irene Lyon and the team, greeting from Indonesia, I'm in the 21 Day NS Tune Up. Since you talk about titration, i have a burning question around it. How do I know if a certain exposure to stress or triggering situation will build my capacity even better or I'm going into more shutdown and retraumatized? Also, on our side we always want to titrate, but we don't have control over what's gonna happen. Thank you

    • @teamlyon3109
      @teamlyon3109 2 года назад +2

      Hi Nafí Andriansyah, Jen here from Team Lyon. To answer your second question first, no, we don't have control over everything that happens. Sometimes we will need to do whatever we can to navigate a situation - this is life! And then, when we are able to do so, we titrate and pendulate our experience.
      To answer your first question, an experience that we want to learn to recognize in this is work is what it feels like to have some activation move through - emotion, sensation, sound, movement, etc. - and then for the nervous system to be able to deactivate. This might look like a bigger breath coming through, a sigh, a softening or settling, more awareness of our environment, to name a few. If a stressor (activation) can move through and deactivate, it's often a sign that we are growing nervous system capacity. If we continue to loop in an experience/it doesn't seem to be moving through, then it can be a sign to titrate and pendulate.
      You can also err on the side of titrating more. As long as you are noticing subtle changes (in any direction) over time, then shift is happening. I also want to make sure you know that as a 21 Day Nervous System Tune Up member, you can ask questions on the 21 Day website too!

    • @nafiandriansyah8046

      @@teamlyon3109 thank you so much for answering the question. It's clear to me now how to navigate the triggering situation. But, can we know from before the activation if we're gonna win or we're gonna retraumatize the system? I could spend my entire night, thinking about if i should take a challenge or not. Don't wanna expose myself too much, but don't wanna be in my comfort zone either. How do we choose things to titrate? 🙏🏼
      Btw, i didnt write from the 21DNSTU because it might fall into general question, and I feel like this video is a good place to ask this question 😅

      @teamlyon3109 2 года назад

      @@nafiandriansyah8046, you're welcome to ask here too, just wanted to make sure you were aware you could ask questions there and it sounds like you are. The short answer to your question is that if you're thinking about whether to take a specific action, you can imagine taking this action and work through what happens as you do. This will likely give you a good sense of the level of activation (or charge) associated with what you're considering doing and can support your decision process.

    Say if you pushed too far too soon and now have a damaged autonomic nervous system causing digestive problems, heart problems etc. If you allow tie to rest over many weeks, will it return to the state it was in before practicing this work or should you see a neurologist to help recovery?

    • @teamlyon3109
      @teamlyon3109 2 года назад +2

      Hi Hugo. Rest certainly can be restorative to a degree, and if you are already doing somatic work and you are saying you did too much of it, then yes, rest alone can get you back to the baseline you were at before overdoing it. That being said, if trauma is at the root of a dysregulated nervous system (which can include the behaviour of pushing oneself too far!) then rest alone will not help it get back to true regulation, and neither will a neurologist. Neurologists do not generally understand trauma, how it effects the nervous system, or how to work with it, though if seeing one would help you feel better then it's not necessarily a bad thing to do.

    Hi Irene, I did 21 days with you. Now I’m in a very spaced out and full of sensations of dissociation place. I keep trying to orient to my environment but it gets harder and harder. Not knowing to do next? I try to rest but it doesn’t help. I just feel heavy and strange. Is this resistance or old sensations from trauma? My life sucks emotionally, during divorce and loosing toxic friends. I could really use some tips. I do listen to my impulses

      Hi Steps 2 better singing, Jen here from Team Lyon. From what you describe, it sounds like you have may done a bit more than your nervous system currently has the capacity to handle - we can be especially prone to this when we're going through a lot, as it sounds like you are right now.
      Following your impulses is an important practice. Slowing down, and turning to resources and practices that feel supportive and/or setting can be helpful too. I also encourage you to ask your question on the 21 Day Nervous System Tune Up course site - a few of us are in there answering questions and can provide support as you move through the course. I'll also link to two of Irene's resources that may be helpful.

    I've been working hard on healing various cumulative trauma(s), and am doing so on my own, in isolation. I suspect that I'm making a mistake by doing too much, too fast... and not titrating gradually to mitigate the severe reactions of this work. At worst, I've experienced heart palpitations, near-panic attacks, insomnia, and chronic migraine headaches that won't relent no matter what I do, even including medication. Do you suppose this is happening because I'm not being monitored/supervised/facilitated with someone who knows about healing trauma and its pitfalls?

    • @IreneLyon

      Hi Lani, Seth here with Team Lyon. It can be helpful to have an experienced guide, for sure! But ultimately we all have to learn how to become our own guide when it comes to how much is enough and how much is too much. No matter how skilled our practitioner, we will at most see them once a week, usually, and we need to do our work in the context of our life, not only when we are in their office.
      A good guide can help cue you into the signs to look for, that you are becoming overwhelmed, which can help teach you to do that for yourself, AND, it sounds like you are already becoming familiar with those signals, at least after the fact.
      As a general rule of thumb - do less, WAY less than you might think. Then see what happens. Once you discover the amount of intensity your system can genuinely process without becoming overwhelmed, gradually increase that.

    What about people who cure their problems by facing their fears and acting courageously almost magically converting their pain and disease into strength vs taking years of therapy like this? I know it's rare but still it makes more sense. I'm still paralyzed in my disease and fear(and auto - immune fibro/cfs pots etc) but something tells me that if I could find some way to simply break out I could instantaneously change

      Hi juntjoo nunya, Jen here from Team Lyon. While miracles may happen, in many cases when people get better in the way that you describe, the relief is temporary. In a similar way to diets, in the absence of foundational changes, the results usually last for a while and then go back to the way they were pre-diet.
      The difference between this and the foundational nervous system work is that instead of overriding what we are feeling or keeping it inside, we grow the capacity and ability to let it move through in manageable ways. The pain and disease (mostly referring to chronic conditions) often does transformed into strength and a sense of well-being. get This can take time, and it often leads to significant and sustainable changes.
      I'll link to a few of Irene's related resources in case you'd like to learn more.

      Hi Jonathan, Seth here with Team Lyon. No, there's nothing wrong with the way you are built! Titration is something that each person has to figure out for themselves - what is enough, but not too much. It takes time.
      Also, it's totally normal while in the process of healing to have some good days, then a big stress, and then days when we are more dysregulated again. It doesn't mean we are doing anything wrong, it just means we have to keep on practicing.

    Do you think CBD oil would help or is this just masking the underlying stored trauma? Could it calm the system enough to make accompanying tinnitus go?

    • @IreneLyon
      @IreneLyon  2 года назад

      Hi Sara Palmer, Jen here from Team Lyon. We focus on nervous system learning and education here and don't have the professional expertise here to comment on CBD oil. There are many different causes of tinnitus, depending on the cause calming the system (though something like CBD and/or this nervous system work) may or may not help to lessen the symptom. With some of these symptoms it can be a matter of trying things and noticing what happens. The Q/A about "when life doesn't allow you to titrate" seems to have gone sideways. Titration is about the release, not the prevention or capacity for new stressors.
    And why are we overly emphasizing the role of parenting? Unarguable abuse/neglect excluded, unless one's parents are telepathic, clairvoyant, and omnipotent, it's unrealistic and unfair to blame them for not preventing every discomfort and pain of life. We can only control our own behavior.
    We are born with our personality, although it's on a continuum. We are born with a proclivity to autoimmune or mental illness if it runs in our family. Every family has a certain amount of dysfunction because that's human nature. Let's stop entirely blaming their misattunement for how our lives turn out. Especially if you do blame them, not giving them that power will relieve you of the victimhood.
