I had a $100k BMW Dinan fully spec'd car - that I bought 15 years after it was made. It was in excellent condition and I got lots of comments from guys who had brand new M3's and such. (Of course it bled me dry trying to keep everything 100% functional!) The great thing about a mid-late 2000's Mercedes is the average person won't even know it's not a brand new car. They still look great.

There's something all too funny about watching Ed declare the Range Rover to be among the world's best cars after watching Hoovie detail all the things wrong with his (mechanically totaled was how he described it), and then burying it in a hole that originally held his LeBaron convertible. That said, I don't know why I have never owned a S Class Mercedes of some sort. I've enjoyed each one I've driven, and I've driven most generations of S Class at least once (still need to check the W140 and the latest generation off the list). Hope it turns out to be true so I’m not stuck taking my son to kindergarten in a few inches of snow driving my 91 NSX 🤣. God bless you, Ed & your great car stories too.
Excellent Ed! I have a ‘91 S-Class I bought for only $500 and I’ve been fixing it up to be my new family car. It’s a really nice driving car, somewhat timeless in that regard.
My dad used to have a 2004 s600 and man was that the best driving car I’ve ever driven.... even today working at a dealership no new luxury cars deliver the same experience, everything now tried to be too sporty. These cars were pure luxury with a shit ton of smooth torque
I have a 2007 S550 and absolutely love it. It’s incredibly comfortable, performs very well for it’s size, and I love the design (both interior and exterior.) They’re much better vehicles than the C215/W220 predecessors and actually seem to be much more reliable. I acquired mine with 79k miles about a year and a half ago and now have 94.5k. Haven’t had any large issues (knock on wood) besides the fact that my Airmatic pump needs replacement. Car drives fine, but the pump is abnormally loud. Maintenance is quite expensive comparatively, but a good Indy and some DIY’ing can cut that down significantly. Basically I’ve done maintenance, tires (these cars LOVE to eat tires), and some minor things like a trans mount and a valve gasket leak (honestly can’t remember exactly what it was, but it was minor and the dealer quoted me the cheapest rate to get it fixed. ) I highly recommend these cars if you know what you’re getting into reliability wise. It’s not a Lexus, but it’s not a Range Rover either. The S65 is actually probably one of the most reliable models as really the only thing to watch for is the coil packs and ABC suspension.
I love this channel. I don't know many other car guys anymore and watching these vids makes me feel like I still have interesting car buddies. And all the other cool guys hang out here too lol
Ive always said Top Gear just isnt top gear when they try to remake it for a new country. I could totally see Ed hosting Top Gear America and it becoming just as beloved.
He would be great for Top Gear America. I don't know who does the casting decisions for the Top Gears but they need to be fired, they are really bad at picking the proper hosts.
i actually owned a Land Rover Discovery 2, loved it, yes it broke every 50 yards and i may have swore at it the most but it always was the best to work on and surprisingly the cheapest to run out of the cars ive owned
He starts the video saying he wants something reliable that he never has to worry about, then goes on to mention vehicles that are either always in the shop, are unbelievably expensive, or both - lmfao. Ed if you actually want a car you never have to worry about then get a Lexus or something.
Congratulations on a win Ed! I am jealous, just had the other 90 percent of the used car market myself, so I am happy someone somewhere is getting a better hand dealt to them
Range Rover is working, 993 is going strong, S65 can't move because no insurance, S55 has a tag going on 3 years expired due to fuel vent, CL55 is good but the doors don't work when it is cold, Audi is hurt and in Arizona with the Murci, Murci is prepped and ready for Verde Draco paint.
LMFAOO!!!😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣 I buy cars the exact same way. I just picked up 91 eclipse gst (dsm). Just like okd AMG's, DSM's arent exactly known for their reliability. The only reason i got it was the kid had it listed for 1500 and had replace the rack and pinion, power steering, alternator, battery, timing belt, waterpump, and tires. Only problem was it had low compression on one cylinder. Now its time to roll the dice. Either its a piston ring, which would call for a complete engine rebuild and a bunch of "while youre in there" expences ($5000+) or, a rebuilt cylinder head ($1200). To minimize my losses i traded the kid my perfectly running 98 neon RT. He was too happy to let me take it off his hands for a running vehicle lol. Took it to the tuner. And got good news "it past the leak-down test. It just needs a cylinder head rebuild" so in a couple of weeks ill have a perfectly running DSM for 1200 bucks.
When I was in high school, one of our neighbors got an S65 off the showroom floor. It was a riot, so much torque it felt like you were pulling pavement off the road with those rear tires. The year after the warranty expired, he spent over $22k in maintenance. The car was quickly replaced by an S8 and now he’s got a 2016-17 S63. These cars are fantastic if you can afford them.
Dexter Sullen 'TRUTH' they’re super cheap too. My local MB dealer is selling an 04 with 39k miles for $19,500. That’s crazy good deal for a car at the MB dealer!
When I first saw the title for the video I thought "Wow, Ed bought a Honda or Toyota." But then I remembered.."wait, this is Ed." (Hope this made you laugh. I always love the VINwiki videos.)
If Ed sees this I’d have this to say. Have you driven a 2017/newer Corolla S(or higher trim) from Toyota? It’s the most fun you can have for $15K or less. I’ll tell you why; you have a car that’s easy to drive, has TCS you can turn off, paddle shifters, really good differential in a FWD, good visibility and a lot of parts available. You also have an extremely fuel efficient commuter, you have a 4 seater that actually seats 4, you have a backup camera even if you don’t need it, you have a solid build quality and you have a warranty for 100,000 miles. I wish I just had some kind of credit so I could finance one. I’m not a salesman. I do work for Toyota but I’m a lot porter of two First car I bought all on my own was a RWD V8 Lexus SC400 (J8TUZ30C4N0005033) modded by previous owner making around 400hp. Long story short a year in to owning it, I hit a concrete wall at 60 miles per hour with an aftermarket wheel I installed (interior was stock except wheel and headunit). No airbag. The car’s frame and integrated impact zones absolutely took it all. Engine still ran, frame was bent and welds were broken on some stuff. I walked away. The reason I fell in love with cars was that Lexus. Walking to work every day and driving peoples cars is bittersweet.
Man... yes. Reluctant as I am to agree with you, Jeremy Clarkson is right (old Top Gear from the 90s), if you need the equivalent of a star trek beaming machine, you CANNOT do better than a Corolla. I'm on my second one right now. The first one was with me to an age of 13 years and 213 000 km. Replaced a clutch and an exhaust manifold. Second one is now 11 years old, 180 000km. Factory original, just regular services. If that is what you want, if you don't mind the McPherson struts in the front and the torsion bar in the back and ... Well... FRONT WHEEL DRIVE... then yes, get a Corolla :-)
For some reason, I was expecting to hear Camry and Accord. As soon as Ed said V12, I quickly remembered what channel I was watching...chuckled to myself
God, you hit the nail on Range Rovers. I am on my 4th one and the last one spent 3 months in the shop. (A 2017 mind you) I still want another one. Same experience for another friend I have but we seem to be total idiots. And the dealership seems to win every time. Congrats on the S!

Crazy how we live in a world where auto insurers don't take into account the car's depreciation or any cars depreciation.
They sure do when one gets totaled!
I love this channel. I don't know many other car guys anymore and watching these vids makes me feel like I still have interesting car buddies. And all the other cool guys hang out here too lol
“It’s actually a really nice car!” 😂😂😂
His English and story telling is on another level. I think I need to relearn English and start reading novels and books.
Jeremy Clarkson likes the Range Rover, Ed likes the Range Rover. He needs to be the host of Top Gear.
This is a really good idea
@@kevin2m4 I can't fault the logic
Ive always said Top Gear just isnt top gear when they try to remake it for a new country. I could totally see Ed hosting Top Gear America and it becoming just as beloved.
He would be great for Top Gear America. I don't know who does the casting decisions for the Top Gears but they need to be fired, they are really bad at picking the proper hosts.
David C. Yep, the good old Too Gear was the best. I don’t know what idiot thought that Joey from Friends would be a good idea? SMH
I love the honestly of Ed on what to buy and what to stay away from when buying cars.
“Strapping my son to a gasoline bomb”
My best laugh of the day 😂
Thx Ed 4 the great compliment on the S Class! I have 4 supercharged S55's ('03-06) which I'm restoring now...
"The worst that can happen to an escalator is that it becomes stairs" 😂😂
i actually owned a Land Rover Discovery 2, loved it, yes it broke every 50 yards and i may have swore at it the most but it always was the best to work on and surprisingly the cheapest to run out of the cars ive owned
He starts the video saying he wants something reliable that he never has to worry about, then goes on to mention vehicles that are either always in the shop, are unbelievably expensive, or both - lmfao. Ed if you actually want a car you never have to worry about then get a Lexus or something.
I don't like big sedans and I don't like Mercedes. Yet I couldn't stop, listening to Ed talk is listening to a symphony.
Thank you for finally releasing the monster 👍
Congratulations on a win Ed! I am jealous, just had the other 90 percent of the used car market myself, so I am happy someone somewhere is getting a better hand dealt to them
Last time I was this early, the entire dealership didn't have the same STD profile.
Clint Gliford I would say that you are the equivalent of Justin.Y in all these VINwiki videos.....
Clint Gliford heeeh
That S Class/relationship expert analogy was hilarious and so true!
That was not what I was expecting as something that had never happened to Ed.
He's really good at storytelling! Always nice to hear a story from Ed!
Let’s get a garage update
Range Rover is working, 993 is going strong, S65 can't move because no insurance, S55 has a tag going on 3 years expired due to fuel vent, CL55 is good but the doors don't work when it is cold, Audi is hurt and in Arizona with the Murci, Murci is prepped and ready for Verde Draco paint.
No better youtube notification than a new Ed story on vinwiki. May you always have a story to tell; we love to hear them!!!
The Hooters waitress analogy had me dieing 😂😂😂
Nice to hear a good experience ,
There's gems somtimes out there ,
I'm well landed Ed, enjoy that boss beast 😆
The S65 is pure class. Really want one of these in my fleet when I’m older and can afford it lol
I always love Eds stories. This is another one!
I've personally think my sl600 the greatest car ever, luxury, hardtop convertible and twin turbo v12.
Dexter Sullen 'TRUTH' they’re super cheap too. My local MB dealer is selling an 04 with 39k miles for $19,500. That’s crazy good deal for a car at the MB dealer!
@@BeesonsCars but the trick is they want you to get it repaired at the dealership too, everytime you take it in, it I'll be a 1000$ minimum quote
There is nothing quite like the way Ed delivers a story. This was just fantastic.
I do work for Toyota but I’m a lot porter of two
First car I bought all on my own was a RWD V8 Lexus SC400 (J8TUZ30C4N0005033) modded by previous owner making around 400hp.
I haven’t but I am sure you are correct. Much better car but still tough to get excited about. That sounds like quite a crash!
Corolla!
most reliable car ever
Man...
Range rover is like an iPhone. It's sht and expensive but people keep buying it
And the VINwiki app also works better on Range Rovers.
An android is like a red sports car, everyone thinks it’s a Ferrari until you tell them, then they are disappointed.
Range Rover has it soul but iPhone only has simple interface for grandparents
Except a range rover doesnt work
B.Roa 23 wrong
Ed’s sentiments on Range Rovers is spot on. I speak from direct and current experience.....”Look at all of these things that have been done!”
The title should be "Ed Makes a Decent Purchase?"
True
Theurban Robinhood g
God, you hit the nail on Range Rovers. I am on my 4th one and the last one spent 3 months in the shop. (A 2017 mind you) I still want another one. Same experience for another friend I have but we seem to be total idiots. And the dealership seems to win every time. Congrats on the S!
One year later....... ‘hello Freddie, got a new project car for you!’
Ed, that Hooters analogy was hilarious! Literally made me laugh out loud! Savage!
This is the funniest vinwiki video i have seen!
I was wondering where Ed was going with the Hedberg reference 👌 .. Once again Mr Bolian never ceases to amaze me
Last time I was this early, Dougie was awed by a parking brake lever.
Land Cruiser?
Your timing chains story on your Range Rover was why I just dumped mine off and bought a Mercedes GL. But man do I miss the Range Rover
