G'day Thom. I'm a 56yo gay Australian. I can pretty much say that my country is generally stunned at the election result. At the local supermarket I heard a lady say to another at the checkout "how can anyone vote for him...he's a criminal, he's a misogynist, he's homophobic, he's nuts"...and that pretty much sums up how US allies like Australia, around the world, are feeling this morning. We just don't understand how a creep like this can even run for office, let alone win. The heartbreak (and more than a little obvious and understandable fear) is written all over your face but please know this Thom...You have a community of people here that love seeing you live your truth and share so much of your story with us. We're all here for you, even from the other side of the world. I have relatives in the US and visit there often. They are in Milford, Connecticut and they are in utter disbelief at the election result and how this will change their lives. Thanks for being so open and for being a beacon of compassion on RUclips. You have a calm demeanor about you that somehow comes through in your RUclips videos. Channels like yours are now more important than they ever were before, especially for young people struggling with their identity, you will save lives and help so many. Trump and his band of troglodytes will never succeed is stopping people from being themselves, not matter how hard they try. Take Care - Craig - Australia.

Hello Thom. I stumbled upon your channel while looking at Heartstopper reaction/review videos. While not a member of the LGBTQ+ community, I have friends and family who are, and know that some of us are dumbfounded by the results of this election. I am a senior man who cannot believe that in 2024 America fellow citizens are in a position to lose some hard fought liberties and privileges because of a person who clearly has no interest in leading this country outside of what's in it for him. I am dumbfounded that there is nothing in our Constitution that prevents a convicted criminal from running for office and getting elected; realistically Trump could not get hired by Walmart but here he is getting elected to the highest public office in the land. I don't know what's happened here in America. I'm shocked at the hard right turn this country has made and am seriously dreading what the next four years will bring. Thank you for this video and your words of encouragement and take a bit of comfort in the fact that there are those of us who fully embrace you for exactly who you are.

Dear Thom. I am 64 , I am Portuguese and I live in Ireland . I have followed American elections since I was 8 . I think this one was even harder than 2016. I could not cope watching the coverage so I watched heartstopper all night . And this morning I watched your last heartstopper review to calm myself down and I don’t even live in America . One of the reasons that I love your videos is the calming effect that it emerges with your voice . I think of you as I would of a friend and neighbour. So I wanted to thank you from the bottom of my heart ❤️

Even though I am not personally affected (and as an immigrant was not allowed to vote), I am still aware of the privilege of living in a country that legalised both marriage equality and abortion rights by a vote of the people. And despite the hatred, bigotry and above all ignorance shown by so many in this election, I still believe the US will eventually catch on and follow suit.
    It will get better!

Thanks for this video. I woke up briefly at about 1.30am our time (in the UK) and had a quick look at my phone and couldn't believe what I was seeing, with worse news when I woke up. It is terrifying enough from this side of the Atlantic and I can't begin to imagine how you're feeling right now. But thanks for highlighting the positives, that does help. In the meantime, because I can't tolerate that face gloating and the horrific self-satsfied bleating that there will be, I've (probably temporarily) deactivated most of my social media, linked all the news sights I read to UK news only (which is fairly grim in itself) and I'm going to concentrate on the things that bring me joy. But that won't stop me fearing for the people who are now even more vulnerable and who must be so, so scared. I hope everyone finds strength and can unite against the stuggles to come.

I don't know how to respond in a way that makes sense to me, but here goes. I watch your reactions and your thoughtful analysis brings value to my life. We have watched for years now the Trans community and Drag community used to divide the Country and to divide the LGBTQ+ community. The broader community is going to come to realize that the attack will be broadened, and I think it is important to say that you always deserved our support and for me personally will have it.

My mom is 91 years old and I’m her care giver which is very hard physically and emotionally. I’ve decided that I’ll focus on her for the time being. That’s all the strength that I have left.

Thank you for sharing your disappointment and fear with so much integrity. The result is beyond belief and certainly a disaster on so many levels, but those of us somewhere under the queer rainbow carry systematic discrimination around with us as it is. And now this. Insult to injury. I’ve no business commenting on US politics, but I can comment as someone who fears for my community over there. Be brave, try to see through the rhetoric, and never stop being your authentic self. Your channel reaches many, all of us people who love your honesty, humour and perception. You are not alone, not you, not the trans community or anyone else in the LGBTQIA world. We stand together, even from this side of the pond. Sending love.

I can't tell you how grateful I am for you and this community. I was hoping this was a bad dream but unfortunately it is our reality now. I am very angry and also very sad. In what is supposed to be the land of the free, it couldn't feel less like that. My son's bi girlfriend has already scraped the rainbow sticker off of her car and they've scrubbed all of their social media of anything that might put them on some kind of a list. This is not the country that I want to live in anymore. I appreciate you highlighting the positive things that have happened, and what I can add to that is that in my state of North Carolina we elected Josh Stein as governor, and not Mark Robinson. I am so disappointed and embarrassed for all the people that voted the way that they did. How gullible do you have to be to believe a narcissistic pathological liar is going to do any of the things he has promised to make your lives better?
Thank you for giving me a safe space to vent, and please know that I love you and Darla also and am here for you always🫂🏳️‍🌈

Now to return to figuring out how to face my American, Trump supporter colleague who I know Voted for Trump, as she always does, and not punch her in the face.

  • @KnightRaymund

I'm sad, tired, scared, and disgusted.
And I'm mad. Mad at those who stayed home or voted Stein, they're to blame alongside those that explicitly vited for the orange. Mad at those who wanted to feel self-righteous and not 'reward' the Dema for Israel, completely ignoring that Trump is an even bigger supporter. At best, nothing will change there and it could get worse. And it will get worse for places like Ukraine. So they can feel smug while others suffer.
I'm not American, I'm Canadian, so the worst doesn't affect me. But it will affect us here. Especially as we're poised to vote in our own conservatives next year (gag) who have been moving further right. The whole world will feel Trump's wrath.
But it will be really bad in the US. Especially for queer people. I'm so sorry you have to deal with it. 😢

Checking in from Colorado where I can at least console myself that we did everything we could. I feel like Illinois and CO/NM and Minnesota (eventually, thank goodness) are little bastions of love in a sea of red hate. Thank you for this video - you made me cry which I really needed! Glad I’m working from home today!
When I woke up, all I could think of was a quote from Miranda Bailey on Grey’s Anatomy. Just replace ‘work here’ with ‘live here’ and it sums up my feelings perfectly: “I don't want to work here anymore. It makes me feel small. I have to make myself smaller to work here… I don't recognize this place anymore or the people. I don't want to hang around long enough that I don't recognize myself.” I joke about moving to Canada a lot, but some days (like today)… man, it’s tempting to consider. But, as another of your commenters wisely said, “Tomorrow we keep fighting.” ✊

I know a lot of people have been screaming in rage or crying in despair which are both completely valid responses, and I'm glad they are able to get some emotional release, but has anyone else just been numb since seeing the results? It's like my mind shut down and won't let me process what happened

I’m sorry Thom. I am in Canada but I couldn’t sleep well at all bc I was thinking about the results so much.
This is grim but we will get through this.

I'm sorry that this country disappointed us all. It is nice to at least look at the positives that did come out in the middle of this. I heard about Sarah McBride but not the others so it is very very good to hear that we are still letting Trans voices be heard amongst all this turmoil. I just send all my love to everyone for the future and that we stay strong and together cause the worst thing that can happen is to let them tear us apart. We got this!!

I have to admit my anxiety is way up. I’m sad mostly. We all know what this man did with his last four years. But I do have hope for good and love and peace. I live in a red state but in a blue city. We also have an amazing Governor. I hope that no matter what people remember power changes quickly and we are only really giving them two years then we can change the house and senate back Democrat and take back some power at least. It may be a long four years but we have other like minded people to help us through! 🌞💙

We can get through it, we’ve been through it before, and we survived, not without severe damage to everything and everyone around us, but we survived. we as minorities as for marginalized, need to stick together, need to help each other, especially in the face of a Trump president, and a Republican run government that will be working to try and drive all of us away, looking to try and make our lives hell.

I'm not American, but I'm so, so sorry this happened, because you'll be the ones most affected even though it will take a toll on all of us. I thought of you when the results dropped and I was really hoping that the voters will have more brains and you guys will have more luck than our country which is also facing situation that makes me want to evacuate to Antarctica every time I read the news and it's getting progressively worse.
Please, take care and try to ignore the news for a while and watch or read something ridiculously cute. ❤️

I watched Luke Beasley after the election, and he said we can take some comfort in knowing that this an incompetant man and he probably won't accomplish even half of what he wants. I would also like to add he will surround himself with incompetant people. We saw how little they accomplished when they controlled the house. Plus, Americans have never been good at being obediant. The tide will turn, but I wouldn't blame anyone if they booked it to Canada for awhile.

I’m not going to lie. I’m not very into politics, and I am only 15 which I still have three more years until I can vote, but I was very saddened by the election results today not because she would’ve been the first female president, but it’s more than that. In my opinion she would actually listen to what people need and fight for their rights but we can’t always get what we want. I know that, but I just wish that there was something better that we could do for our country and she was the better thing. I am grateful that we got amendment three to pass❤

    I'm depressed...
I'm not trans but I hated seeing all the anti trans political ads. The one ad they just keep playing over and over and over again 🙄🙄🙄😒😒😒
" Forcing schools to let Biological males play sports with girls"!!!!! They didn't say women they said girls
    😠😡😠😡😠
Then they show footage of a 50-year-old 6'6 COLLEGE basketball player near her 5' tall teammate (footage i my add that is from 10 years ago) trying to put fear into people's heads. She had other teammates taller but the footage had to only show the shortest player on the team. They showed this ad so many times I had to look her up.
It pisses me off that they keep showing this ad of this college basketball player who just so happens to be older, who just so happens to have a 5' tall teammate hammering fear home in people's heads. She just wanted to have fun playing college ball again, her teammates were happy to have her, they didn't have an unfair advantage because they didn't win every single game they played in (a team of misfits they called themselves). BUT the politicians had to make an example out of her.

I’m :55 in and I can feel for you but I’m telling you you’re wrong. It’s too much for me to attempt to explain here. But let’s set a calendar date every year from now for the next 4 years and see where things really are. I’m willing to bet, not as bad as you fear. Mind you, I’m saying this after a friend of mine was just murdered as a hate crime for being a very free spirit gay man. Some just hate too much and unfortunately will always be part of an open society. But we have to hold our heads high and not live in fear. We just can’t. We’ve got to persevere. I believe most people even like 99% of the right are decent humans and just want all of us to be left alone to live our lives. There is no way vast racism has or will suddenly overcome our nation. I want you to live your best life. That means your whole life not just your gender identity. I’m a big fan and hope you don’t hate me. Hang in there, it will be ok.

You're definitely not alone there, Thom, and I am greatly relieved to see your face today: A friend had several people he knows .. end. I don't know who of the extended anyones in my circles I might not see again when I go to an event somewhere, and that is sobering.
We did what we could. Now we survive this by banding together for support and fighting the brownshirts. We know this, because we've done it before, and our young need our experience more than before [*]. They need someone steady to hang on to while we all try to defeat the disease afflicting our country and the rest of our world.
With great admiration and hope for you --
[*] I never really felt like much of a father figure until the past 24 hours, but this is not how I wanted it...

As the campaign went on and people were interviewed on the street for news broadcasts, one thing struck me: the number of young men and women (many voting for the first time) who confidently said they’d vote Trump. They cited the economy, their values, how they felt Trump is the man to fix everything, etc. None appeared troubled by his over the top pronouncements, insane diatribes and blatant falsehoods. Have they been hypnotized or drugged or voodooed into believing him ?
I’m scared of what this heralds for world democracies, with budding dictators and populist pols shouting for attention in so many countries (including here in Canada)…😨
