I must commend Austria. They lost their capital, but kept fighting. Not just stayed alive, but a major contender almost the whole game. One day, I would like to see an AI make that full comeback. An AI that lost their homeland but somehow rebuilt, became a power anyways, reclaim their homeland, and win it all. But until then, Austria did great.
Yeah, too bad Babylon's territory literally cock blocked Austria's navy, otherwise they would have quickly taken over that upper middle continent early on and might have stood a chance against the Songhai at the later stages. 1:08-1:28 You'll see the Austrian Navy sail east but then stops near the middle of the map, right in front of Babylon's territory.
Wow, Austria was great. First to colonize one of the islands, then they immediately lost Vienna with the colonists left to carry the Austrian flag. And then they stayed as one of the major contenders on that island almost to the end
Austrian settler 1: We've found this new land with an obscenely large amount of salt, what should we call it? Austrian settler 2: How about Sal(t)zburg
Peak Salzburg. Finally living up to its name. This is really different, I like it! Keep up the good work :) EDIT: Of course the Austrians and Ottomans somehow find a way to get in a fight hahaha
in 1 of 200 games is songhai strong and this is one of it. no but srsly, i really didnt thought they would win. always nice to see a civ winning who usually dont.
Hippo Regius was a major weakpoint for anyone that owned it, killing lots of units even in peacetime. The citizens of the city were like, "WE YEARN FOR BLOOD!"
Also, the unit defending the city loses a bunch of HP every turn and eventually dies out. I think this actually weakens both Austria and Turkey a lot since the AI constantly sends fresh troops to the city only to find out it disappears turns later.
I blame Babylon. Their territory literally cock blocked the Austrian Navy from going after the Ottomans and gaining full control of the upper middle continent they were exiled to during the early phase of the game. 1:08-1:28 You'll see the Austrian Navy sail east but then stops near the middle of the map, right in front of Babylon's territory.
They also were doing a good job throwing back Songhai but then the AI really really stupidly tried to throw a bunch of cannons and other units into amphibious attacks and lost big. The moment songhai had a big heap of battleships the game was over
Why does AI builds a settler sometimes but waits without using it? I saw Greeks built a settler, but never established second city, Netherlands too, Danish settler was standing there and suddenly disappeared, and so on!
kosiak10851 I'm pretty sure they are programmed to build a settler after a specific amount of turns. I'm pretty sure they must not of had optics so they had nowhere else to settle, if you do this in a single player game on a super tiny map, they have a tendency to do the same thing.
The part of the AI that determines when to build new settlers is totally disconnected from the part of the AI that decides where to settle them. If a civ thinks it needs to build a new city, it builds a settler, whether or not the settler has any room to actually settle. Its fine in a normal game, because you can always find somewhere to settle. An island, the empty tundra, something. Its why the AI ends up with really terrible cities on the other side of the map. In smaller maps like this one, the settlers just stand around, waiting for a tile they can settle on to appear, until they get captured and enslaved.
They absolutely cannot. I have 2300 hours in this game, I've tried it before it doesn't work. This vid either had a visual glitch where it was actually a hill or a bug because of one of the mods being used that allows settlements on mountains.
The Ottomans where so lucky that Babylon did not have open border with Austria. 1:05 They would have been the first civ to be wiped out for sure if not.
No Babylon. Austrias fleet can't pass through babylon to finish the Ottomans off. And If you look at the battle on land, it is obvious that Austria is at war vs Ottomans.
This actually has a very interesting answer. The human eye is better at seeing differences between light and dark than differences between color. Video compression algorithms exploit this through chroma subsampling, essentially storing the color values for the video (chroma) at a lower resolution than the brightness values. This results in color bleeding over the edges of objects in the video sometimes, but usually it's not noticable. In this video all the civs have icons with high contrast symbols, with either a light logo and dark circle or dark logo and light circle. All except Korea, which has red and blue with very similar brightness. While all the other civs have the extra resolution being used to distinguish their icons, Korea has to rely entirely on the chroma resolution. This is why it is so much blurrier. Hope that made sense. Sorry for the rant :)
Yeah, you must download map drive.google.com/file/d/1TSTuM1txx-3BeNBJHbIEshbL0B5ypvJG/view and then put it in C:\Users\Username\Documents\My Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 5\Maps
I was SO hoping Austria would return to the mainland and retake Vienna
Considering how early in the game Austria lost its capital, they did really well. If the Songhai weren't so powerful, Austria probably could've won.

DarkGhost89 living on one landmass means they can focus on defending better (less ships, more land units esp. Ranged)

Austria really wanted Carthage to be in the game for some reason
Austrian settler 1: We've found this new land with an obscenely large amount of salt, what should we call it?
Austrian settler 2: How about Sal(t)zburg
Salz actually means salt in german
Salzburg literally means Salt City if I'm not mistaken
@@slowburgundyy574 Yeah, completely literally it means "Salt Castle", but "Burg" could both mean "castle/fortress" and "City" in Medieval German.
That's what I love about Askia. Either he gets wiped out early, or he totally dominates out of control if you choose to ignore him.
Austria was doing pretty up there in the north
Until they decided to have a war on two fronts....
Austria is really just Germany in denial
The AI with that Carthaginian mountain city was hurting my brain
They have surpassed human players
Peak Salzburg. Finally living up to its name.

@AIBattle
You have a talent for creating good scenarios for AI timelapses, which create very dynamic fun to watch replays
Kudos to Austria for their staying power.
Dat endscreen tho xD

Did I just see an AI liberate a city?
in 1 of 200 games is songhai strong and this is one of it.
no but srsly, i really didnt thought they would win.

Hippo Regius was a killing machine
Was that on a mountain!?
Carthage mountain city
Kills units stationed inside
Hippo Regius was a major weakpoint for anyone that owned it, killing lots of units even in peacetime.
The citizens of the city were like, "WE YEARN FOR BLOOD!"
We all just gonna ignore that Hippo Regius is on a mountain?!?
Also, the unit defending the city loses a bunch of HP every turn and eventually dies out. I think this actually weakens both Austria and Turkey a lot since the AI constantly sends fresh troops to the city only to find out it disappears turns later.
That's why ships managed to hit it without indirect fire then.
Highlights of the episode:
Viena lost it's capital early and still remained relevant
Snipping Portugal
Gao Snowballing
Fernando Franco Félix first time I’ve seen Songhai do well, let alone win
I WANTED AUSTRIA TO WIN SO BAD THEY DID REALLy wELL
I was surprised how well they did after they lost their capital, they held on for such a long time after that.
I was rooting for them.

Wanted Songhai to win love the weird puppet thing at the end
Pretty cool seeing Carthage settle Hippo Regius on a mountain. Funny watching Austria lose about 20 units trying to keep the city manned though.
Heros for some reason i cannot settle on mountainat all. AI cheats again as usual
I took Carthage's ability and can walk on mountains and such, but cannot settle
Haha Carthage would settle over the mountains...
Love how the Songhai liberated Carthage's city at around 3:10
That was Austria, and they did it three more times.
There is epic music playing but I'm just looking at colors fighting over the pizza slices
Figure that. I never saw a powerful Songhai. Especially not late game.
Did Carthage literally settle on a mountain?
special ability of walking in mountain + enormous mountain range + settler + stupid AI going nuts= that
Wait, so Carthage settled Hippo Regius on a mountain?
Why?
Yeah and how?
They have an ability that lets them cross and otherwise use mountains after they receive their first great general.
Austrians have lost their capital to IKEA, but they have founded the city of SALTzburg.

Well talk about mvps, who would of expected songhai, Portugal, and the ottomans to be last? No one did...
The megalobox ost is so good
the mausoleum at halicarnassus would be op af in this scenario
My money was either on Songhai or Poland. The moment Songhai took one of Korea's cities I knew it.
poland isn't in the game
Probably one of the strongest portuguese AI only in a while.
true
Wait, where tf did purple come from?
Carthage had its city liberated
Poor insular Austria
I'm very disappointed that the ottomans didn't get bigger they were ideally positioned and the map is a present for them
happy that portugal made it to top 2
Salzburg full of salt

Carthage
Thanks for this videos dude!
WTF did carthage settle on a mountain tile??
Samwise Gamgee they can but for each move on mountains troops damages 50 hp
Can you build a observatory if there is only one mountain tile, an you settle on top as cartage?
settlers can't settle on mountain tiles even as carthage. They can walk on them but can't settle on them. definitely a mod glitchor something
