LIVE: Ethiopia’s PM Abiy Ahmed Visits Sudan to Push for Peace Amid Civil War | Firstpost Africa

Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed met Sudan’s armed forces chief General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan on Tuesday. The visit comes as regional and world powers seek an end to the conflict between the military and paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). Sudan has been reeling under a civil war since April 2023, when fighting erupted between forces loyal to al-Burhan and the RSF led by his former deputy, Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, widely known as Hemedti. Abiy, who was seen as closer to the RSF than the army, framed the visit as part of a push to bring stability to Sudan after nearly 15 months of conflict. Mediation efforts, including by the United States and Saudi Arabia, have repeatedly failed to break a truce in Sudan.

As an Ethiopian, I can confidently say that PM Abiy's effort to bring the Sudan civil war to a close emanates from a deeper understanding of the broader ramifications of the civil war if it spills over. It is mutually acknowledged and also advantageous to build strategic alliances and lasting friendships with neighbors rather than creating a fearsome army. We know that we cannot live in peace and secure steady development while our surroundings are condemned to savage carnage only to satiate someone's greed for resources.
