    The TATE mode part at the start is already enough for loving this video, and the whole review is great as usual. I'm not even someone who buys mini systems, but I'm still appreciating systems like this for showing games that i didn't heard of before and could become an instant favorite of mine, especially with Metal Black.

      I did have fun with that intro and it's part of what keeps me looking forward to things. I'm glad I could show you some cool new games to try. Metal Black is definitely a must for any fan of the genre.

      @Sakfal504 Metal Black and Gun Frontier really caught my attention, can't believe I've never played either of them considering their lineage and the people behind them!! And I'm stoked to see Halley's Comet getting a little love, that's a one of a kind game.

    • @Sakf504

      @@SegaGenesisEvangelion Yeah. And funnily enough i actually knew and played Gun Frontier quite some time ago because of seeing some fotage of it somewhere that catched my interest, yet i didn't know of Metal Black until there was already the Egret II Mini. Also, i will second what Junkie said about Gun Frontier, because it's hard like the true hell, but still loved it for the wild west ambient it had.

    I know you are an original hardware guy, but I appreciate you taking the time to review these devices.
    It's refreshing to see a person with your extensive knowledge and expertise on SHMUPS review the shooters on these devices.

    • @ShmupJunkie
      @ShmupJunkie  2 года назад +9

      To be honest I'm a bit of both. I do like my OG hardware mainly for nostalgia but I also love great devices like the MiSTer and Analogue consoles that replicate it extremely well. As I know one day it may be the only way we can play them. I see the mini consoles as little gateways for more casual players to check out the games and explore the library. Especially with the PC Engine mini, a lot of people tried out the games for the first time. And it's what then got them to look into it farther and play more of the games. It was a massive amount of work making this!

    So much work to present this machine ! Up to reviewing not only the mini, but every single game on it ! Thank you very much !
    BTW rotating the screen on the actual Egret 2 ain't that simple, it is very easy to break the tube because the cables would be in the wrong place, and you can damage the cabinet if you let it close to a wall.

    • @ShmupJunkie
      @ShmupJunkie  2 года назад +1

      Thanks! Yeah it was a ton of work. And I still only reviewed my favorites and not all games or the video would’ve been two hours instead lol. Good to know on the Egret. Still a bit of a tech marvel for its time and something I’ll keep in mind if I ever am able to own one someday.

    New Zealand Story is definitely a highly underrated run and gun sidescrolling shooter. I really love the flying vehicle aspect of this game. Not many run and guns actually have that many vehicles, one other title that does is the first Gun Force by Irem. #OhMyEgret

    • @ShmupJunkie
      @ShmupJunkie  2 года назад

      Absolutely, and I think people don't really see it as a run n gun as it's also kind of a maze/puzzle oriented game. There's just a lot to it along with all the secrets. I was always a fan even on the PCE. Oh man Gun Force, I need to go back and play that again. I didn't even know it until later and it's been ages. There haven't been many IREM games I didn't think were knockouts. Oh, you're in for the giveaway.

  • @bananonymouslastname5693

    I know that the focus is shooters, and I love them... but god I love me some Rastan. I first saw it at a Grandpa Pidgeon's store in 1987, and have bought it about as many times as possible. First on Master System, then on Japanese PS2 when they announced Taito Memories, then on Xbox on Taito Legends, and then the actual PCB when I started getting my own cabinets. I love that game so hard.
    I could go on about these Taito games all day, but I'll just thank you for the quality of this review. I don't think most reviewers truly understand the difference between the audiences for a product like this, and recognize the importance of things like input lag and aspect ratios to people who are real diehards for the original experience, then others who just want a way to play the games, and others still who just want a nostalgia piece. I feel like you speak to all of these groups without preference, and just try to help folks make the right decision for them. It's a great example of the way things ought to be.

      Really glad to hear it and you enjoy how I approach it all. In a way, I'm a little bit of all those categories and care about those things to a point, so I like to figure it all out. But at the same time don't really dwell on any of it unless it's excessive. Really care about the games more than anything and why I enjoy making those segments. I had to headline with Rastan as I agree, that game rocks! You're in for the giveaway as well.

I really enjoy focusing on the games like I did in the second half of the video. But I'm glad I was able to get this info and tech detail out there on it! Maybe in the future I can just have my site/blog host tech detail stuff for those interested and focus on games. People who want the nitty gritty can go there. I enjoy your technical analysis of the hardware. This is where your A/V real-life experience really makes this channel stand out from others. It is interesting to learn that the AstroCity unit had a monitor that had a faster I/O response. It had nothing to do with emulation prowess.

So it arrived late to the party unfortunately with waning interest, but I didn't see a point in releasing anything less than what I wanted to test and show. And glad I did. I would say the Astro is still more consistent with it's emulation, but in terms of overall performance yeah, they are quite close. I didn't expect Cameltry to be as cool as it was, even if I'm not sure I pronounced it right. It was definitely worth highlighting. I didn't know it had a SNES port until after I posted the review! I can't say it's worth the high cost on the controller bundle either, at least not until it can be used on PC too for more games. I wonder how many more games Taito had that use it they could still release.

      Thank you. And to their credit, they made the rush and got the views for it, where this is a bit late and will get less attention. Unfortunate but that's how youtube goes. Gotta strike while it's hot with reviews like this and I took a long time. But I wouldn't have it any other way. I don't see a reason to put out another me too review of this thing. Of note, the firmware update to 1.1 improves controls a lot. The thing I could tell the most is that Arkanoid moves much smoother with the paddle turns, it felt a bit jumpy before. No idea about the wattage lag, people reported in the past that supplying it with less than 12W increases input lag but I haven't been able to tell the difference between plugging it into a cable coming from my PC and one from my 65W power bank. Maybe I need to test more demanding games, perhaps it is related to the game's CPU usage. It wasn't drawing anywhere near 12W from the power bank when I checked the numbers but I think that was with original Bubble Bobble.
    They also patched the CRT stretch in.

    • @ShmupJunkie
      @ShmupJunkie  2 года назад +1

      I’ve been wanting to retest some of the games since the update. And see how they’ve improved. That’s great yo hear your impressions on Arkanoid. Don’t waste much time on the power thing. As long as it’s not being under powered per spec, there’s no extra benefit of giving it more than it needs. I tested that pretty thoroughly. But I’m looking forward to seeing the firmware improvements.

      @@ShmupJunkie for me it's one of those things that I could get but would have to sacrifice getting others (aside from bills lol) with the influx of great releases in general right now.
      I enjoy every aspect of the video and find it inspiring that you cover it all in language we can all grasp.
      That lag tester with the LED lights has me intrigued.

      Thanks. Probably because I posted my review late, weeks after everyone else and it got a low click rate due to lack of interest. So the algo chose to not show it to more of my subs. Glad you found it as it did come out really good and a bunch of people have jumped in on the giveaway now. I’m still not caught up on all the entries 😅

    Great review! I like that you go more in-depth with each game so I can better know what I'm getting into. This should be the standard for mini-console reviews. #OhMyEgret

    • @ShmupJunkie
      @ShmupJunkie  2 года назад +1

      It will probably never be the standard as then they can't rush the videos out to get all the views while it's hot. I spend a lot of time on each one, but I really enjoy it so much, I can't imagine not doing it this way. It just wouldn't be fun and feel like nothing but work. I'm proud of these and can watch them myself again and enjoy them too. I'm glad you did too. You're in for the giveaway!

    This video is definitely well done. The way Shmup Junkie compares the Astro City Mini
    arcade console with the Egret II Mini arcade console ,showing the pluses and minuses of
    both retro arcade consoles. It seems to me that Sega, Taito, and SNK are developing these said retro consoles to vary the types within the retro gaming market. Very well done video , Shmup Junkie.. #OhMyEgret

    I have Taito Legends 1, 2 and the PSP release that had games not on either of those. I think I'm good. As much as I really want the spinner and trackball + their supported games, I like my CRT + Legends + stick. :)
    All that said, I still want this little cute machine lol

    It's a shame Taito feel like a bit part outfit these days. They were so prolific in the 80's and 90's with some truly memorable experiences. Thanks for taking the time to make the review! #OhMyEgret

      Kind of the case for most of the old devs these days. Unlike most that are gone, at least Taito is still around and trying to release some of their properties. Would always be nice to see something new of course. Been a long while since the last Darius. You're in for the giveaway.

    I've loved your videos so much that I went ahead and pre-payed a full year for your Patreon. Thank you so much for the hard work and enthusiasm you bring. Also appreciated is your even-handed approach to reviewing; some people post black-and-white reviews or go on rants, but you present games as they are, with the caveats of personal tastes in mind.
    For me, I'm still keeping my full Taito Egret II Mini set preorder (if I don't win, hehe!), knowing full well that it's not perfect. But like others I just love game history and have enjoyed most of these originally in the arcade. Owning officially licensed versions of those games in a neat desktop package is a dream come true for me. Thanks again for the trip down memory lane (in Egret II Mini form :D)!
