Considering it's released in japan next tuesday i'm pretty sure at least one system box has been finalised. Then again they have already shown it on their official twitter account.
You smashed it, I'm looking forward to both the original Japan Pink and Western Blue versions of these as I have pre-ordered both. They are expensive but they are made with love and have a lot of content. Thanks for the review, be nice if you could elaborate more on the controls and how the functionality feels. Nice to know my Astro City Mini Controls will work on it not that it matters as I ordered every varient of control for it. Shame you didn't get the SD card and the track ball controller but I am sure that will truly be the highlight of the system. Thanks for all you do, I'm a fan of your channel, keep up the work friend.
Sweet you showed the Astro City controller works that I already have. Implies the Magic NS adapter and **Japanese** Mega Drive Mini controller will work too. Can you test one or the other? Fascinated by the Master System comparisons that US gamers mostly missed out on.
I'm not 100% sure, but I think that you need the mayflash "pro", if that's the NS you're talking about. I have a regular NS (in the grey case) and it works on SNK mini but not on astro city or taito. The pro adapter does work, and I've been using 8bitdo arcade stick with it a a 2nd joystick. Also, 8bitdo M30 controllers are compatible.
Maybe it's me but I think this is the first time I've noticed Dan talking about emulation and roms so openly. I like it. Honestly the price is too much to grab it as a casual fan, but it looks like an amazing set and a fantastic list of games (for the most part). Great coverage Slopes. Keep it up.
The review is lacking a bit as it doesn't go into if the unit has HDMI output, what filters/scanline options are available. Perhaps it has none of those. But I didn't see mention of it.
I believe this mini candy cab trend started with the Neo Geo Mini. It amuses me that SEGA, by all appearances, looked at that and said, "hey, let's do that but better", and then Taito (Or Square Enix, who I believe owns Taito now) looked at the Astro City Mini, and ALSO said that.
Great review! Totally going to get this one. Have many of these games on the 4 Taito Memories ps2 games. Question…did you have a filter on while reviewing these games? Asking because the the ps2 compilations had a forced blurry filter in them (one of the few bad points on otherwise amazing collections).
Quite a lot of them are on the two taito collections on Xbox/PS2. I know the kaizer kuckles games are not and a few others aren't, however the taito collections also have games that can be played via pad without the need for the expansion (puchi carat, cameltry) and other titles not on this system (space gun, operation wolf/thunderbolt, jungle hunt and some others).
Yeah, that thing is going to sell out. Taito, emulation, tiny arcade style devices and creature features (comforts) like a rotating screen shown in the video checks many of the big boxes and goes to an extreme creating some new ones at a fairly approachable price point. Most likely going to be on back order for many if my intuition serves me well.
That tate mode transformation mechanism is so satisfying. I wound up getting the luxury pack from play-asia because who knows if someone will soft mod it to play all the taito games. It's also worth it to me to see if the ball and paddle control is compatible with mame. If so it would up the experience of playing the sonic arcade game, missile command, and SDI among other games.
I'm curious about MAME compatibility on the other controller too, but I haven't seen anything yet. I was able to get limited compatibility with the joystick controller, but no function in game.
Rainbow Islands Extra was released over the original version to avoid licensing issues with the song, 'Somewhere over the Rainbow'. (Main BGM on the original Rainbow Islands)
I agreed the collection is well selected for a mixed of stuff there even tho there is gazillion bubble bubble, but it's worth it just for the rotating screen and 4/8 way joystick select on the fly. Now I'm just waiting for someone to hack it with the sdcard and now we are playing with power. No need to get a lot. Just give me retroarch and we are on our way to absolutely fantastic ultimate arcade mini.
12:06 One of the few old games, with the incentive of pasific ending. (Not killing any enemies gives you bonus points.) 15:23 Natsume localize a similar game in the snes era Where is Don doko don 2?
When you say the astro city pads work on the system do they work correctly with the proper button mapping? For instance on the replicade street fighter 2 cab if I put in a usb six button it uses the mode button as an attack throwing off the mapping and cannot be changed. If the Egret uses the astro city pads with the buttons all being correct still then I may pick this up and save a bit of money.
Mine were just dispatched from Amazon JP to the UK -- £330 for everything ordered separately. I've checked and the Egret II, controller, arcade stick and trackball were sent as separate parcels so I should avoid any further import taxes beyond the VAT already paid. Buying from Strictly Limited (shipping out of Germany from what I can tell) would cost me over £400 at least.
That suck for you now , I'm in the Netherlands so no more tax from Strictly Limited Germany . I keep reminding myself that anything from the UK is taxed now when I order something .
I'm being rude and commenting before I watch the video (I promise I will watch the whole thing!) but THANK YOU DJ Slopes for doing this! I pre-ordered one and I am really excited to see how it turned out.
Awesome . I already pre-ordered but am still thinking about the mini trackball/paddle , apart from Arkanoid the Taito games don't appeal to me much but if they hack this thing to play Mame roms that opens a lot opportunities like Centipede , Missile command , marble madness, cosmic chasm , tempest etc .
Is this the same as the one that's been preorder-able available via Amazon JP? That is, do we know if the loadout/language settings on the device itself are identical?

Super epic Egret 2 review man 👍😆👍👏👏👏👏👏 thing I have is the Astro City mini and the neo Geo mini so far and also the PlayStation classic and the Sega Genesis mini and the NES and the super NES minis.
Please can something be said about the control latency? At 28:40 it looks pretty severe, like that would make things like shooters unplayable at harder difficulties. Is there perhaps a large dead zone on the joystick that makes it appear worse than it really is?
Fantastic review thank you. I hope you can answer a query for me, is your review unit a US / EU version of the system or Japanese ? I say this because I purchased mine from Play Asia & they said it would be in Japanese (no English) so not sure if they were mistaken or if there were different regional versions, thank you very much.
I just bought my unit, funny how the "limited edition blue model" is still the only one being sold in the West. I think they just figured the Westerns would want as little pink as possible on their unit. The blue is nice but I still prefer the original
I am tempted in buying this, i am deeply in love with the Astro City Mini (despite its lack of screen switching lol) and there are a lot of games in this new mini that I got to play in the arcades. Small questions: 1.- Who developed the emulation software? M2? I don't think it was made by the dudes who worked on the Astro (Sega Toys lol) 2.- Can you use the NS Switch adapter to connect other controllers to this? I use that for the Astro City because I like using my TE2 to play Virtua Fighter. Thank you for your video!
I know the hardware actually was manufactured by the same company that did the Astro City Mini, and also the Genesis/MD mini and TG16/PC Core mini. M2 was involved in all of those as well, so I'm not sure if it's the same company? At any rate, Taito and Sega have their own engineers but it's actually made in South Korea. I don't know about the NS Switch adapter, can you say more? Or maybe I'll just hop on google. What I use is a Mayflash pro adapter, and it works on both the Sega Astro City Mini and Taito Egret 2 mini, for 8bitdo arcade stick. But I can't remember if I've got it on switch input or X input. 8bitdo M30 is also compatible.
Hm... I'm intrigued... I do like the gimmick and its library of games... I did skip out on getting the Astro City Mini due to its library of games feeling lackluster to me, I was sorta hoping they'd release more "volumes" of it to have more games I'd be more familiar with. Though the Taito Egret would look nice alongside my NES, SNES, Genesis, PS1 and Neo Geo Minis... and perhaps a Game Gear Micro if that's still being sold
I just ordered one. I didn't know there would be a localized unit as well. I figured I better get one while they are available and somewhat reasonably priced.
You said that Cadesh was a stupid game to have in there because there was no translation, but there was an English version of Cadesh. I played it all the time in college because there was a machine on campus, and I could complete it with 1 quarter. I assume that they could put in that version of the ROM if they localize it.
Hmm... it does look cool... but apparently the lag is terrible (so it plays like crap). Hopefully they can fix that, but it might not be something they can do much about. A higher res screen with modern CRT shaders would have been a really lovely addition. It'll end up on the shelves of many collectards I'm sure.
So I got this system and the light bleeding/clouding on the screen is appalling. How come no one mentions this? While playing games it's so-so, but the moment you start the system right at the Taito logo, it's extremely noticeable! Neither the Neo Geo Mini nor the Sega Astro City Mini have this problem. Admittedly, they have smaller screens that don't rotate (maybe that causes the problem?)
Check out more weird video game facts here... ruclips.net/p/PL2cGkWDzM1HObBSd5yp2OV6dJvJw4eSzz
They should have included Warrior Blade (Rastan 3).
I was sold for that screen rotation alone! This looks awesome.

Keep it up.
Ahhhhh cheers mate. I wanna do more like this in the future :D
Excellent video - good overview here. Thanks for this.
You are more than welcome
KiKi KaiKai is connected to the Pocky & Rocky (KiKi KaiKai: Nazo no Kuro Mantle) series games. Pocky & Rocky being it's sequel
pre-ordered one from amazon jpn last year...patiently waiting
How come your machine’s ball top and buttons are blue instead of pink?? You got lucky!
The European version has blue buttons
"Huh, why should I buy this over the Astro City Mini?"

"... SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY!!"
I wonder if the paddle is compatible with the pandora box arcade? That would be great!
Great review! My retail Japan pink unit arrives in 6 days, and I can't wait to review it for myself. Love the blue!
Shame Strictly Limited Games are doing the Blue version for European Market as they take longer than Limited Run to ship their stuff
Damn dude. Good review.
Haley’s Comet is the same as Haley Wars on Game Gear! Finished that on GG, hidden gem!
First review of this neato device I heard of
Yeah, that thing is going to sell out.
That's an awesome factoid
I agreed the collection is well selected for a mixed of stuff there even tho there is gazillion bubble bubble, but it's worth it just for the rotating screen and 4/8 way joystick select on the fly. Now I'm just waiting for someone to hack it with the sdcard and now we are playing with power. No need to get a lot. Just give me retroarch and we are on our way to absolutely fantastic ultimate arcade mini.
Bro awesome review where did you get the Pine Pot neon sign from!!??
That's very neat that is rotates.
I'd kill for a real one tho, just ordered a Taito F3 motherboard and that's my dream cabinet.
12:06 One of the few old games, with the incentive of pasific ending. (Not killing any enemies gives you bonus points.)
15:23 Natsume localize a similar game in the snes era
Where is Don doko don 2?
That SNES game... or, rather, 2 games... are more than just "similar" to KiKi KaiKai, they're outright sequels to it.
How does the machine perform via a HDMI? What does the machine output at?
Oh hell , i just ordered the trackball/paddle .
Any word on emulation quality and things like scanline options? For such a purist-oriented product they really ought to be getting that stuff right.
For a purist..you probably best buy a full size arcade machine as this is just a toy🤔🤣
Is this the same as the one that's been preorder-able available via Amazon JP? That is, do we know if the loadout/language settings on the device itself are identical?
It's got one thing going for it...it got released!
Hip hip AMICO
Is ordering this from Strictly Limited considered buying it "direct"? I mean, is that the price without a markup?
Great review!
Hi slopes first time viewer very entertaining review reminds of a lot game master and bad influence growing up in the 90s. Keep up the good work and just hit the subscribe button 👍
Wow, that's a huge compliment... Thanks so much. Plenty more to come
Super epic Egret 2 review man 👍😆👍👏👏👏👏👏 thing I have is the Astro City mini and the neo Geo mini so far and also the PlayStation classic and the Sega Genesis mini and the NES and the super NES minis.
Oh wow! My brothers drew/designed that LifeForce/Salamander vinyl cover at 28:30.
That's so cool!
Please can something be said about the control latency? At 28:40 it looks pretty severe, like that would make things like shooters unplayable at harder difficulties. Is there perhaps a large dead zone on the joystick that makes it appear worse than it really is?
If someone made a 4 hour loop video of you rotating that screen I would watch.
Hey Slope where did you nab one? Edit: Nevermind! I saw.
this and the Astro City Mini go great together
Great video!
Nice review thanks 😊👍
Cheers mate
I just bought my unit, funny how the "limited edition blue model" is still the only one being sold in the West. I think they just figured the Westerns would want as little pink as possible on their unit. The blue is nice but I still prefer the original
I am tempted in buying this, i am deeply in love with the Astro City Mini (despite its lack of screen switching lol) and there are a lot of games in this new mini that I got to play in the arcades.
Small questions:
1.- Who developed the emulation software? M2? I don't think it was made by the dudes who worked on the Astro (Sega Toys lol)
2.- Can you use the NS Switch adapter to connect other controllers to this?
Ours is incoming. Looking forward to getting hands-on!
I would love to get my hands on QIX. i can play that for hours on end
I just ordered one. I didn't know there would be a localized unit as well. I figured I better get one while they are available and somewhat reasonably priced.
Taito games is under the same restrictions as NAMCO games..
Really jacked up emulation on arcade classic hits..
Should have a mini crt for that kind of dosh!
Aw it's adorable.
I own TAITO LEGENDS 1 and 2 of PS2 and I would argue that they together have a better variety of games. Good video. 💯
There is a lupin game!!!! i'll play that just to know what vintage lupin fans felt playing it.
I like a good, loud clunk noise. that means it will hold up over time. And that isnt really a creak... more of a shuffle 😆
You said that Cadesh was a stupid game to have in there because there was no translation, but there was an English version of Cadesh. I played it all the time in college because there was a machine on campus, and I could complete it with 1 quarter. I assume that they could put in that version of the ROM if they localize it.
I think I am going to get one for Darius Gaiden alone.
Hmm... it does look cool... but apparently the lag is terrible (so it plays like crap). Hopefully they can fix that, but it might not be something they can do much about. A higher res screen with modern CRT shaders would have been a really lovely addition. It'll end up on the shelves of many collectards I'm sure.
So I got this system and the light bleeding/clouding on the screen is
appalling. How come no one mentions this? While playing games it's
so-so, but the moment you start the system right at the Taito logo, it's
extremely noticeable! Neither the Neo Geo Mini nor the Sega Astro City
Mini have this problem. Admittedly, they have smaller screens that don't
rotate (maybe that causes the problem?)
