Galaga & Galaxian are often looked at as being copycats to Space Invaders and sure even though they did indeed take inspiration from the legendary space-shooting arcade game. The history behind these classic games goes a lot deeper than that
In this video we take a look back at the history of Namco’s Galaxian game and how that changed into Galaga. We look at Galaga 88 including its confusing ports such as Galaga 90 and Galaga 91! We take a look at Gaplus (also known as Galaga 3) and everything after inclusing the weird playstation games, the strange world of Galaga on mobile phones, The theme park attractions such as Galaxian 3, the ticket redemption machines and of course the VR stuff too!
There is a lot more to Galaga than meets the eye!

Here’s a fact: Galaxian revolutionized colour graphics for video games. Games released before Galaxian barely had any coloured sprites (except for maybe the green shields in Space Invaders while the aliens were white) but Galaxian was the first game to have multicoloured sprites in it, resulting in a visually impressive game for the time
Yep, still looks so good to. They used those 4 colours so so well
@@slopesgameroom
Apologies, but several sources claim that Dog Patch for the Astrocade featured multicolored characters before Galaxian. I can't confirm whether that's true or not - the arcade original was clearly b/w, and I've seen three different release dates for the home port. 4, if you count reproduction carts.
Which is why I don't consider this any kind of a correction. Hell, I can barely understand how the Astrocade's "magic memory" works. Besides, Galaxian still looks better.
But all this rabbithole diving has taught me to respect what you do.
How much time do you spend researching and editing material that never makes it into the final product? Or have you just developed a natural instinct for what makes a good guided tour through history?
Either way, thank you for doing what you do. Between this and the other Namco retrospectives, you're a better brand ambassador than the actual company usually is.
Those shields were just a mask on the screen if I recall. Space Invaders was a mono game.
@@jhoughjr1 Yes, you're correct. It was a green film.
Yup I remember Star Castle used those type of overlays
When I was 3 years old, a table-top arcade cabinet of Galaga and Pac-Man were the first games I was exposed to. Galaga was easier for me to understand because toddler me thought I was playing as the ghosts in Pac-Man.
I thought the same thing, and I was 9 or 10 at the time! There were 4 ghosts and only one Pac Man, so maybe this wasn't uncommon. Mine was a tabletop Pac Man, in the waiting area of a restaurant. This seems to be a common thing in the early 80s! A few years later I discovered the arcade, and was riding my bike over there for 10 token Tuesdays.
Gahh my local Five Below used to have one of those back in 2008. I absolutely loved it as a little kid
There's something about the Galaga logo that I love. The colours, the font, it's just one of my favourite game logos of all time. Great video as always!
Yeah, the GALAGA / GALAXIAN logo is stupidly iconic
The Galaxian font was very influential in graffiti culture....
It has also become more common to see arcade side boards and marquee art in tattoos, Galaga is very popular.
huge Roger Dean influence in evidence there - google his logos
I'm old enough to remember my dad bringing me to one of his favorite bars that just got this new machine you put quarters in called Space Invaders. He explained to me how to play to get really good at it.. One of the few memories I had with the man as a little kid.
Since then we had bought me an Atari 2600 and would take me to arcades in the early 80's about once a week.
He died relatively young about 21 years ago but I still play video games to this day in my 40's and watching this video sent me on an emotional memory- coaster of my father.
Anyways, great video, as always. 👍
This is why I do what I do. So happy I was able to rekindle those awesome sounding memories for you.
Mucho love to you and your dad
OK sinistar
@@ungabungus01 I AM Sinistar!
Speaking of Namco Museum, I had all five PS1 games that spelled out NAMCO. I was proud of owning those compilation disks. I also owned a couple of compilation disks on the Wii. Namco will hold a special place in my heart because of games like Galaxian, Galaga, Pac-Man, etc.
One of my earliest gaming memories was going to a local seafood restaurant and while we were waiting for our food to arrive my grandmother would give me a few quarters to go play the Galaga cabinet over in the front lobby.
Your ‘complete history’ videos have become ridiculously good. The structure seems so natural and the footage/segment transitions are really slick. Thanks for the great videos!
Really appreciate it mate. I put serious time into them so always love reading these comments
@@slopesgameroom , Galaga: Destination Earth was not as bad as you said, and while I hate VR, I see Galaga Fever VR as essentially a continuation of Galaxian 3 and Galaga Legion/Galaga Legion DS. Moreover, without Galaga 3/Gaplus, Galaxian 3, AND/OR Galaga: Destination Earth, you honestly would not have had Galaga Legion/Galaga Legion DS. Also, had Galaxian 3 been a fully mobile 3D game, as opposed to an on-rails only shooter, and had been delayed about a decade, you know, to get the graphics up to a passable standard, and also had bosses as Galaga '88/'90/'91 had, then it would have a much bigger hit than what had been given to people...think across between Wing Commander, the shooting sections of LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga, No Man's Sky, Elite: Dangerous, and all of their related ilk, plus the other games that I had mentioned. Now if you want a Galaxian/Galaga game that really would break the mold, then such a game would absolutely do it, yet it would still be simple, as well as true to its predecessors. Also, I have played the original Galaxian and Galaga and I found them to be too slow, particularly Galaxian, though, thankfully, not as slow of a slog as King and Balloon, and Galaga 3/Gaplus, while having an awesome game changing mechanic of having YOU be able to use a tractor beam on your enemies, you know, as payback for how often that they did that to your ship in Galaga, ultimately was a bit too weird and difficult in comparison to its predecessors. Finally, in a bit of irony, Namco, albeit not the first company to do so, as that honor would go to Apple Computers, albeit in an unlicensed manner, though Kenner got the first officially licensed Star Wars video game honors (who else), had finally made a Star Wars game for the FDS and it was...not well received.
For real. The quality of these videos *chefs kiss*
Great feature Sir, I really enjoyed this vid!!!
Appreciate it mate
@@slopesgameroom no worries, it was nice to hear about a far lesser covered game.
Freaking brilliant video. The editing was sublime.
Appreciate it Holmes :D
Space Invaders: a game so popular that one of its enemy sprites is literally the icon for video games on some websites, apps and software!
It really is. Super iconic
This one was quite the surprise to see! I absolutely adore Galaga, and that’s thanks to my dad. The original Galaga is his absolute favorite game of all time, and seeing a video dedicated to the series makes me exceptionally happy.
a LOT of people have this is their all time fav game... I had to do it :D
So....they made a VR light gun game.....and it never occurred to them to make _THAT_ the true home port of Galaxian 3???
Because when you were talking about the Galaxian 3 28-player arcade theater and how the game was basically lost since it couldn't be ported really, I was thinking "this sounds like the kind of thing they could do in VR with multiplayer"...
Most RUclips videos that I am drawn to are pretty good, but yours, sir, are impeccable. I can't believe the quality of all the video edits and your well-timed voiceovers.
Plus the content is just super geeky cool. I can't wait to check out some of your other content.
seeing Galaga Legion DX and that Galaga VR now make me want a Tetris Effect style Galaga Legion.
Hey Slope, just got to give you some cred for the incredible production value of your videos. Been subscribed for quite some time now and while 153k sub's ain't bad, you really deserve more. I have spoken.
By the way, love the fact that you have a Polybius game in your collection. Though I don't remember the details, that game gave me even weirder dreams than the Galagas attacking me.
WOW, I can't start to imagine how much work you put into this vid, congrats it's bloody great!
Appreciate it mate. Yeah these vids take a long ass time. Always love seeing comments like this
quality work as always! :) thanks a lot.
greetings from germany
i remember owning Galaga on the NES and played the absolute hell out of it. I may not be good at it but i still love it.
Didnt know there was another way to pronounce Galaga. Looks like we are wrong all this time lol.
It could be said that Space Invaders is completely responsible for what we do over on Bullet Heaven. But Galaga is one of my own personal pillars, with Galaga '88 perhaps even more responsible for the kind of gamer and content creator I would end up becoming. Great feature. Shooters Forever.
O for sure. I think space invaders was the 1st arcade game I ever saw... That or GALAGA
FINALLY got around to watching this. Amazing work as always my man! That 28 player Galaga game looks insane, can’t believe that was in 1990!! I really would love to see someone (with a lot of money) try and rebuild it at some point, but I know that’s quite unlikely. Anyways, nice work and thanks for the video dude!
One could argue that 'Cosmo Gang the Video' from Namco is also some type of Galaga-Follow-Up. And its a good game too.
Could not agree more ruclips.net/video/Hq8pJTjOxes/видео.html
Great vid as usual, Slope, you charismatic Brit. As a young Brazilian boy in the 90s my first contact with Galaga was in the form of a clone game hidden in MK3/UMK3 for the SNES called The Realm of 'Rellim Ohcanep' (Penacho Miller backwards). All magazines in my country listed the cheat required to play it as "to play Galaga".
I absolutely love MK3's engine and system, but I admit to having spent some afternoons just trying to get far in Rellim Ohcanep.
Love the Polybius arcade cabinet just casually hanging out. XD
So fun fact: there was a free-to-play back in 2014 on mobile devices called Space Galaga that featured the characters from Space Dandy to help promote that anime as well as promote the Galaga name!
Ahhhhh yes... I remember hearing about this... Good shout
Piggybacking with another fun fact (semi-fun?). The Midway arcade Gorf has a Galatians stage. I’m assuming this was Midway abusing their Nampo license like they did with Pac-Man. Maybe Taito’s licensing was a little more strict because the Space Invaders stage is called “Astro Battles”.
Great video with well researched info. I never knew about those amusement park varieties. That must have really been something to experience at the time.
Thank you for the insight on the early days of Namco's video game business, this was a great video!
Holy shit! I was in my late teens during the rise of Galaga, etc. I didn't know about all of the later versions past Galaga 88. A great in depth look on this franchise! Great video. Subbed ;)
How does this channel not have a million subscribers, very professional production!
Excellent production... Hard work I'm sure... Subbed👌🏻
Wow. Loved every single second of it. Namco did a great job on Galaga Arranged (Namco Classics 1) It's like a celebration to the original Galaga made with love.
Thanks again for this well made documentary.
Thanks so much mate :D this video has sadly flopped a little so j appreciate all the support here
Galaga ‘88? Now THAT’s galactic dancing!
What a great documentary, i just love Galaga so much, it is my go-to first every Namco collection i play
Appreciate this. Thanks ever so much :D
My God these videos are so freakin good. You single handedly spank G4.
This is a great documentary - keep up the good work
Appreciate it mate. Huge thanks
Loving the picture of yourself Larry and the crew at the end
Nicely done, this must have been quite the undertaking. And wow what a picture at the end! It's like a who's who of my favorite video makers. Oh and um... 37:42 Hope your "problems in the back end" work out mate. ;)
Yeah, these videos take weeks but I'm always happy with the outcome. Appreciate the comment.
"Problems in the back-end" I currently have no internet and I have COVID
@@slopesgameroom oh my gosh, I heard the part about no Internet but didn’t know the Covid part… hope you don’t have symptoms that are too harsh. It can be such a mixed bag from what I’ve heard from friends. You’ll get through it!
Fun fact.
In spanish we actually pronounce it as ga LA ga, since due the orthographic rules, to pronounce as how people pronounce it in english, it will need to be written as Gálaga, to put the stress on the 1st A, or Galagá for the last A.
I did not know this... Ha, cheers for commenting :)
@@slopesgameroom Love your content, keep the great work 👍👍👍
It's a crime against humanity and culture that this only has 15k views after 6 days, hope it gains what it deserves in the future. Super well done as always!
Yeah it's always painful when these videos under perform. Spent months on this one
Brilliant video slopes
Thanks mate :D
I played a 6 player version of Galaxian 3 at Blackpool .. It was Awesome!! I also got to try the full scale Ridge Racer with the Mazda.. I love the old skool big cabinets form back in the day. I didn't realise the version of Galaxian 3 I played was a scaled down one. The one you describe in the video here looks ridiculous!! My ultimate big cabinet experience though was getting to play the SEGA R360, A legendary machine that I had always dreamed of playing. I stumbled upon one in Barcelona back in 1994 and it blew my mind. It was everything I hoped for and more!
Thanks for the education!❤ Love Galaga.
14:31 Quid is now my favourite _Galaxian_ character.
QUID.... YOU'RE A CREDIT TO YOUR CARTRIDGE
Great documentary, I had no idea Galaxian and Galaga were that close related to each other!
This video also served as a great reminder to pick up Pac-Man & Galaga Dimensions, since the eShop is going to close soon
Awesome! Never knew Galaga has quite the cool history!
Yeah, I really enjoyed researching this one
Can't but help think of an Amiga PD game called Deluxe Galaga which was the bomb back in the day. Great production and informative as always Mr Slopes!
Really appreciate it mate. Love making these. So thanks, for the comment
I'm not one to nit-pick, but you missed Galaga Assault. It's not like it is an earth-shattering addition, but I had fun with it.
The only reason I comment with this, is because Galaga is so close to my heart. It was my first love at the arcade in the 80s, and the only arcade game I could flip.
I did learn a few things with your video, and am indebted to you for it.
You have a new subscriber.
I again realize how good Slope's videos are because of how he uses music, guess the DJ years pay off big time :D
I'm 55 years old and was visiting a friend in upstate NY last summer and we went to an arcade in Syracuse and played air hockey. I always loved Galaga and Stargate when I was growing up but was never any good at them. I ended up playing one game of Galaga, after having not played it in 30 years, and played the best game of Galaga in my entire life! It was so much fun, I had such a good time that day! 😁
Glad I could rekindle those memories buddy
Awesome! Galaga is pretty awesome! Very important to gaming too!
Great video. 😁
I remember the first time I saw a Space Invaders game. It was about 1979 and a tabletop version of Space Invaders in a cafe... i was captivated. Galaga was another step ahead... absolute classic.
Holly crapola ! I remember playing both Periscope and Shoot Away as a kid !
12:51 “Galaxian looked f👾cking awesome” huh. I agree
Had to add that in lol
i love the music in this video!
14:31 That was actually funny 🤣
Long live Galagaxian!
"Gun-damn"
Nice job, Slope.
Appreciate it mate
Galaga 3 Gaplus was my favorite of the series, and that is how the cabinet was labeled if I remember it correctly, I loved those bonus stages.
Great work Sir thank you
No, huge thanks to you for posting a comment. Glad you liked it
Ah man, that was epic!
Appreciate it mate
Perfect series to watch for lunch break
So glad ya like it matw
@@slopesgameroom I'm really glad you mentioned and enjoyed Galaga Legions. I really hope they do a re-release on PC some day.
I learned so much from this video. Galaga is the only arcade game that i just have to play if i see it in the wild. I didn't even know it was a sequel. I thought glalaxian was a rip-off of it. Makes me want to hunt down the other versions and give them a shot. Thank you for making this well informed video on one of my favorite games.
Video straordinario,impeccabile !
If it hasn't been said already. You should peep Galagon for the Atari 2600. It's a great homebrew that looks and runs amazingly on the Atari. I'm sure you've heard of it, but it's one of my favorites.
22:00 HELL YEAH, LET'S TALK ABOUT MY FAVORITE!
30:58 Another one of my most loved. I for one come back to it every time I pick up my psp emulator.
31:30 And there's the other MAME hit!
35:19 Also cool.
Excellent and immersive summary. As soon as this appeared in pubs, Space Invaders was dropped quite quickly. A true classic. It should however be titled Galaxian(s) the complete history as this is, without doubt, the original concept.
Cheers for the comment. I was only a nipper when I started seeing this pop up. And I agree about Galaxian. However, it's nowhere near as well known. Even NAMCO celebrate the release of GALAGA and act like GALAXIAN does not exist half the time
Two thumbs up for the video!!!
Appreciate it bud
My father introduced me to this game via a plug and play and immediately felt in love and played gradus life-force and thanks to my father I love space shooters
In my kitchen I have and old extendable white dining table, but around it I have orange chairs. And not far away, orange containers with a cork lookin' lid. And in my game area, and old orange kitchen cupboard. The exact same orange as that Shoot Away arcade machine haha. And all those kitchen things are from the 70's, sooo my guess would definitely be that it's from 77.
Also; hell yeah Karate Kid, 'tis me favourite film that.
That's one funky kitchen!
I was putting in New carpet in my house and someone installed the carpet I was tearing out over the old carpet. It was a shag carpet that was seriously yellow and green. Yucky 70s stuff.
you really should have 10 times the views you have i dont get it. you always make great content. you are really good at what you're doing slope.
Appreciate it Raina. Hopefully the algorithm shines some light on me soon enough
I was growing up in South Korea when Galaxian was ubiquitous in many arcade parlors. I happened to notice the rapid transition from Galaxian to Galaga (including numerous Galaga knock-offs) in a fairly short period of time. Some large arcade parlors had as many as a dozen Galaga consoles! I moved to the US right after this transition. One thing I noticed almost right away in the US: while I was able to spot Galaga consoles, they were not as ubiquitous as in South Korea. In case of South Korea, when a particular game title became very popular, there was a sudden spike in demand for that exactly game title. By contrast, in the US, there were more game titles to choose from with more varied preferences between different players. In other words, there is less pressure to conform to the ongoing fads over games in the US compared to South Korea. Another significant difference: by the early 1980s, the US gaming market was already awash with Atari 2600, quickly followed by the proliferation of 8-bit home computers, meaning there was less need for players to jump to arcade parlors unless they wanted to experience new arcade game releases. By contrast, South Korea had to wait until the late 1980s for home video game consoles and computers.
One of the true classics of arcades
I know I sound like an old fart, but I will take the classics ANYDAY over todays games. Galaga was a high-water mark for the time. Even Asteroids, with is primitive (by todays standards) graphics, is, to me, infinitely more fun than whats happening now in the gaming world with its insane graphics. Cool video and well done! Thanks!
I feel like slopes is full of 30/40 somethings reliving their childhood.
Galaxian 3 sounds incredible. It's a shame that the only way I'll ever be able to experience it is if someone invents a time machine.
Or some eccentric billionaire/tech geek decided to take on the project of rebuilding one
Since you mentioned Space Invaders many times, you gotta eventually do a video on its history, if only so you can bring up Space Invaders Infinity Gene. That's a really trippy yet pretty well-received game. There's also Space Raiders: the weird game that took the Space Invaders formula and tried to make it into a gritty third person shooter. Taito made some bizarre Space Invaders spinoffs.
Yeah... It's gotta get done eventually. Although sadly this video has done really badly
While I grew up with a NES I still enjoy these old classics. I found a PS2 for sale at Goodwill and it luckily had a Namco Arcade disc in it (bonus score !) I like to pop it in every once in a while and play some old arcade classics but my favorite on the disc is actually Rolling Thunder.
Edit : Just looked it up to see if you had a Rolling Thunder complete history video, and you do. Looks like that's what I'm watching next.
That's awesome. Let me know whatcha think
My first introduction to playing a Space Invaders / Galaga style game was playing Falcons on the Apple II. Released in 1981. The same year as Galaga.
I remember that
There was a secret code on the SNES version of Mortal Kombat 3 that allowed you to play Galaga, and the Playstation version was included in the loading screen of Tekken 3
There are a couple games missing in the legacy... Bosconian used the same Galaxip and ran off of Galaga hardware and spawned it's own sequel, Blast Off. By the way, I'm glad you mentioned that it was supposed to be called Ga-LAG-a ... that's how I always pronounced it...
Love this game
Tekken for the PSX immediately booted up with its own version of Galaga while it loaded. Enemies didn't shoot, beam, or fly at you, but if you cleared all the stages by destroying all enemies, you'd unlock the Devil skin for Kazuya. That was my first exposure to Galaga... and a test of will.
"That man is playing Galaga!
He thought we wouldn't notice, but we did."
A blast from the past on steam. Love galaga and wish they would make it full screen. Learn to leave the good stuff in and make improvements.
I have always loved Galaga, but the fact that my kids actually really like it (unlike most other old arcade games) is proof that it really was that good.
I had this for the BBC Micro.
Galaga ‘88 is one of my favourite arcade games ever
For the longest time I thought Gyruss was the third game in a Galaxians/Galaga/Gyruss trilogy. Only realized the truth during the GBA era when Namco and Konami released arcade compilations. That said, I still believe Gyruss is a better Galaga sequel than any official game in the series.
I was tempted to mention Gyruss tbf
Yep, I was about to comment on about the tubed Gyruss version being missing and then when I went to look up the date it was created was pretty shocked to find out it was not actually by Namco. It was an excellent game and copied the Namco style pretty faithfully.
I've been a big fan since my mom let me try out Galaxian in the lobby of a local department store back in the '70s. If a version gets made for any console or computer i have, I like to pick it up. I even got a chance to play the 6 person immersive version. It was tons of fun if you could get a full group. Definitely a gimmick, so no where near the replay like the original, but still a great time. My sister was a pro at Galaga 88, but I always did and still do prefer the original Galaga above all of the other variations.
Galaga my fave golden age game. Level up (yes that one) In Canterbury had a galaga cab in the back of the shop a few years back that I used to add a few credits to when I was in that town (city) the chap running the shop even told me a cheat for the game that stopped the enemy's from shooting back.......additional. I also remember playing cosmo swat when I was a kid in margate. Great game I would scroungers money off my parents who were enjoying a pint in the pub opposite the arcade where cosmo swat was and toddle off next door for a few games. The pub itself even had an old pacman cab with some servere screen burn that I passed up lol
I remember playing Galaxian 3 at Blackpool Pleasure Beach. I used to play the original Galaxian with my Gran on Atari 2600 as well.
Ahhhh that's an awesome memory
@@slopesgameroom we'd play Galaxian, Asteroids and Mr Do. My gran really liked Mr Do.
@15:12 Two Polybius machines? Nice.
5:18 It's that racing game from "Dawn of the Dead"!
There was also fun public domain version on Amiga, called Deluxe Galaga.
i heard the opening jingle and my brain was flooded with happy chemicals!
"You've been pronouncing it wrong. It's pronounced Jalaga."
I'm actually enjoying the game on my counter cade. It's great.
*Galaga theme plays* it's game time 😎
when I was a kid a local casino had an arcade to park your kids and they had a Galaxian 3 6 person theater. was expensive per round but it was always a good time. many good memories of my dad and I carrying whole games for random groups to the point others that wanted to see the ending sometimes found us and paid for our chairs because we could USUALLY get there so long as the people with us didn't totally suck. pretty sure the difficulty ramped up based on how many people were playing. I recall sometimes being almost able to beat it on my own (never quite though) but in a full theater with people pretty bad not even get to the final areas (especially in the sequel that was way harder)
Oh man I wonder if we had the same casino. Because I wanted to post the same story about my parents taking me to a local casino that had the whole room setup for Galaxian 3rd. I remember they had special $1 tokens just for the game which was of course way more expensive than normal quarter tokens.
@@chronossage was Grand Casino Hinckley Minnesota for me
Galaxian was the first video game I ever played. As a stand-alone game it was and still is awesome to play. Galaga and its sequels simply built on that greatness. Happy gaming everyone!!
Hey, Slope's Game Room. How about you do the complete history of Time Crisis in a future video?
