Birthday greetings Gary. I thought the portion size looked perfectly adequate, especially for lunchtime. I dislike eating a meal that leaves me feeling bloated and I also dislike leaving food on my plate , so I prefer moderate portion sizes.
I'm always fascinated by the way chefs can come up with various imaginative and attractive ways of presenting food, even the traditional roast dinner. And that pub looked pretty impressive. I'm just wondering, given that portion size, if the ghost of Dick Turpin intervened before it got to the table. Given, also, the Charles Dickens reference, you should have gone to the kitchen with your empty plate and said "I came here with great expectations, so please can I have some more?" 😢
I used to go there as a kid with my parents and later as a teenager. I moved away in early adult life but I still go back from time to time. I had the fish and chips there in September and it was a nice piece of fish for £18 .Blew the Seashell Lisson Grove out of the water. It's in a lovely , if now over -populated and discovered part of the world, right next to Kenwood House. The atmosphere is always great and the last time I went the service was excellent . I think for where it is, the price and portion sizes are about right. Great review as usual.
I read through the whole menu and have to say, the variety and value is amazing! I loved that there were dogs out with their owners, enjoying finer weather! Anywhere my little dog can come is my choice - she's a rescue with only 3 legs and just wants to be with her people all the time - and would love to be in a setting such as that!
Hello Gary, you seem to be working through all my stomping grounds. Peter Cook used to drink and hold court in the Spaniards as he used to live around the corner. Another couple of pubs worth a try for a roast, The Tufnell Park Taven in Tufnell Park and The Grapes in Limehouse
New subscriber here. The beef looked just how i like it but two thin strips was measly. The yorkshire looked good and at least was sizeable but as you said overall it was not a decent meal size for £20. My question is was the food piping hot? It didn't look it. Also was the plate warmed? It ia a real bugbear of mine when you are served hot food on a cold plate.
Hi Mark. Thanks for subscribing! Have to take photos of the food so sometimes it does get a bit cold. The plate wasn't hot and agreed, the portion size was too small.
With my critics hat on , I agree with you, small portions dry Yorkshire, I couldn't have earn it without the jred wine gravy, price not bad but think 8 is being kind.sheila & Patrick.
Lot of men like their grub, not worth 20 quid, the video beforehand, palos, where you had that amazing fry up, he could have charged 20 quid, suppose it all depends on the popularity of the place, love your channel gary 👍
Morning Gary and happy belated birthday for 3 months ago. Beef too rare for my liking Gary but know thats how you like your beef. Was the meal hot Gary as it looked cold to me. Didn't look like a big enough portion as you say. Thank you Gary
❤️🧡💛💚💙🩵💜💖💕🎉🎊💃🏽💃🏽 HAPPY BIRTHDAY GARY!!! 💃🏽🎊🎉💕💖💜🩵💙💚💛🧡❤️ Many Happy returns, hope you had a stunner. Roast, it looked delicious, nicely presented. Maybe the portion size was because the chef didn't expect to be fully booked? Love a good homemade Yorkie! But for the price. Did you say it was your Birthday? Sometimes theyll give something extra. My anxiety over the puppy crying though. 😭 Him and the Camera man not eating.. 💔💔 All Cuteness must eat well. 😂😉 Happy Belated Birthday, much love and appreciation. 🥰👏🏽👏🏽
Thank you! I try not to celebrate them anymore as I'm getting older but the roast was very nice. Yes, the poor puppy crying in the background, I noticed that as well. The cameraman was more annoyed that he couldn't eat more than the poor dog! Thank you very much and for your kind comments once again.
Hi gary, you should try st johns tavern on junction road n19. Make sure you try their rump roast. Usually perfect blush red throughout without any grey matter.
It's looking a lot better than when I used to go in there back in the 1980s....for London I didn't think the price was to bad but I would be disappointed with only 3 roast potatoes.....
I thought for the price and quality it was grate and i think 8 is a fair score, such a shame when they skimp on the cheep filler's like potatoes. Chris.
Spaniards Inn eh? I wouldn't mind a penny for every driver that wished it was knocked down fifty years ago. A notorious bottleneck for vehicles. Having said that, I've sunk many a pint in there over the decades. Wonderful pub situated in one of London's top ten locations. Personally a top three London location. Is the Aviary still there? With regards to the food, it all looked delicious and I would say value for money priced at £20 considering the location. For me, I would go somewhere that I got twice the amount of food for the same money. I could of course order and devour two meals but £40 is way out of my financial comfort zone. If as you say, the place get's very busy, then the pricing must be correct. Thanks for the video. I've just found your channel and I'm liking it.
It's a truly wonderful location. Probably the best beer garden that I've been to in a while. Had to be careful crossing the road there mind you. Not sure RE: Aviary. Food was good even if portions a little small. I could have had another straight after but as you say... out of my financial comfort zone too. Thank you, hope you enjoy and thanks for commenting!
There used to be a big Aviary in the garden. It's probably 25 years since I was last there. I would be pleasantly surprised if it's still there because it was part of the charm of the pub. I doubt it though. I've been binge watching your vlogs and enjoying them all. Thanks for the replies. I will subscribe now.@@GaryEats
Quality place, quality staff, quality food. Could of done with one more slice of beef and one more roast potato. Also Yorkshire pudding should be a pudding with crispy edges. The original idea of the Yorkshire pudding was to fill you up to make up for the lack of meat. Morden versions are far to light, crispy and fluffy. Mr cameraman should have paid for this as it was your birthday 😂 meal looked gorgeous but i would agree portion size needed to be bigger for that price.
Well this was 7 months ago now, so Happy Very Belated Birthday Gary lol As it was your birthday then, did cameraman pay for the meal?? As for the portion size I agree-could of at least given you another Yorkshire Pud + a potato at the very least! Another solid review buddy 👍🏻
Yes a stingy portion, don't get much for your money. At lest it was cooked well, but I'll never go near them with the size of portion.. Its a bit like somewhere advertising a large breakfast and you only get one egg. Agreed with your point.
It's a pity that they don't have Roast Lechon on the menu, which would be treat coming from a Spanish heritage establishment. But your meal could have done with some mashed potatoes. which would have made the meal more complete.

Hi gary , it was a good portion size , this is why people get fat ! To big a serving. Anyway the waiter ponsing past evertime was a distraction i think he new he was being filmed 😬.
My bar for full English is to have a gristle free sausage and melt in your mouth bacon. If anyone can point me in the direction of a flavoursome 100% guaranteed gristle free sausage, I am all ears. (Not Pigs ears, obviously🙂). Great review, but £50 for a full English? How much do you think it was actually, worth out of interest? 👍
What I have noticed in the short time I have watched your channel is that the EU needs to raise the price slightly and increase the portions more like half of an American portion. To find that sweet spot, basically, the EU gives too little and America gives too much.
Not keen on this pub. Pretty poor beers on too. It’s an impressive building in a great spot, it could be way better. I live round there and don’t go in. I recommend the Magdala, at Hampstead Heath station forma good roast
For the money, one would not expect to have a portion size of a main meal of the day; a lunch-sized portion is reasonable at that time and at that price level... Wish I had it here, getting hungry! Maybe Germany and Holland are getting expensive, don't know. Perhaps brexit wasn't all bad after all.... London!? That price!? That's a breakfast price that is!.
I'd have to agree with you, look'd very nicely presented etc,but high £,s+ service charge, not good vfm,we use "Prince off wales" Green lanes Ilford Essex. 2 Roast+2Deserts £21 or "The Three Traveller s" Near Whalebone Lane Dagenham Essex. Roast dinner £8.99 each this pub is noisy though.rgds
Birthday greetings Gary. I thought the portion size looked perfectly adequate, especially for lunchtime. I dislike eating a meal that leaves me feeling bloated and I also dislike leaving food on my plate , so I prefer moderate portion sizes.
Thank you very much, David, I understand your point completely
Lovely beer garden chap, food looked nice ..I love root vegetables 👌👌 for £20 a bit on the small side...but hi, you looked like you enjoyed it 👍👍
Thanks 👍 A really beautiful pub!

Happy Belated Birthday, Gary. 🍾🥂 Haven't been there, but from my POV it's not worth the trip from the centre of London...
I would be pleased to have a day away from Brixton.
I'll agree on the portion size. Looked a tad pared back to me. Incidently, what does your cameraman eat on these fact-finding missions?

Brill, Gary. I had a Great Dane that eat less than you. I would rather buy you a new Wardrop than take you to dinner.😂😂😂
LOL. Made me laugh that one mate, honestly my appetite can be good and bad depending on the day.
Good food is never expensive gary
👍🏼👍🏼
Not keen on this pub. Pretty poor beers on too. It’s an impressive building in a great spot, it could be way better. I live round there and don’t go in. I recommend the Magdala, at Hampstead Heath station forma good roast
Ah that’s disappointing to hear.
@@GaryEats I’ve not been for a few years so will stop by again soon for a pint
Medium rare only way to have roast beef . Keeps it tender and moist .

Agreed. Thanks for watching!
Looked good but portion size wouldn’t have filled me , mean servings
Agreed. More the roast potatoes than the meat. Thanks for watching!
Go to a carvery..put on the plate what you want, for about 70% less..
Well, from an American perspective, the portion would get a lot of adverse comments. Everything else certainly looked top-tier.
Good stuff!
If you haven't got an appetite at the start of this video, you will have by the time it finishes. Oh, Happy Birthday.
Spot on and thank you
Bleedin' yapping dog in the background! Enough to give you a headache and put you off your really little £22 dinner.😫
It went on all afternoon.
It seems to me as an American British food is crap no offence love your channel and enjoy watching you sir
Thanks for watching Brent 😊
For the money, one would not expect to have a portion size of a main meal of the day; a lunch-sized portion is reasonable at that time and at that price level... Wish I had it here, getting hungry! Maybe Germany and Holland are getting expensive, don't know. Perhaps brexit wasn't all bad after all.... London!? That price!? That's a breakfast price that is!.
Good point!
Bloody hell, that's a good deal. Thanks for pointing that out!
