Lumpini Park was one of my favorites places to go read a book during my weekends off from work. Yes, these lizards are all around roaming freely. Yet the Thais keep their distance and go about their business, it's a perfect coexistence. It was always the tourists/foreigners who were following them, taking pictures, and some were scared of them. It was fun people watching, as I sat on the bench. Oh I miss Bangkok, definitely great memories!

That's The point, They used intimidating music while describing these lizards and then juxtapose that by basically telling how the local see them as harmless. That's one of the oldest filmmaking techniques in the book: You raise the tension higher and higher, and then you subvert the expectation.

I’m English and went to this park yesterday! Was so crazy, they are loads coming in and out of the water. All the westerners were shocked! And the Thai people found it normal like seeing a bird. Must visit if you can!

I was with my ex-wife in Malaysia, exploring an quiet small town of Port Dickson - we came out of season. We walked across a beautiful, empty beach and then we saw this colossus trudging out of the sea... My jaw dropped, and when I got around I started screaming like a toddler because I was so excited to see a monitor lizard in the "wild", but the to poor thing got scared of me and ran back into the ocean 🤦🏻♂

Reminds me of the time me and my ex-gf were walking in the park when this huge water monitor emerged from the bushes up ahead and she started panicking while i told her it's ok, it's not gonna harm us, just walk beside me like this... Inside i was smiling to myself as i got to act all macho in front of her 😆😆😆
There are many in the canal behind my house. Sometimes they climb the fence and enter my garden. Once a huge one even entered the front door and strolled around inside the house. As soon as they hear or see people, they scamper off. Totally harmless, unless you have cats or small dogs. They're quite fascinating to look at really.

Meh I’d be chill too honestly. Here in FL my 12yo daughter and I see alligators on our trail walks and rides all the time. They are mostly super chill and want nothing to do with you. The one exception was this one time while out on a walk my black lab and I stumbled on a momma gator, she had like 8-10 little babies and was not having visitors lol. We made sure to mind our own business on that occasion…. 🐊🐊🐊
Yeah I can see that, main difference is gators will take opportunities and snatch people any chance they get by waters edge. While monitor lizards just hunt their prey and go on about their day.

These creatures were a common sight in my home garden in Sri Lanka. Actually they are not aggressive as they look nd help us by making sure our garden is safe from venomous snakes like cobras pythons nd vipers.
In Thai, we said "เหี้ย" (/hia̯˥˩/ or hia) or "ตัวเงินตัวทอง" (Tua ngen tua tong). Tua ngen tua tong means they have silver and gold color on the body. Sometimes, we named them "วรนุช" (Varanus) , That becomes to scientific name Varanus salvator. Ps. For me, they are so freaking cute. 🥰

This is a clear reminder that there is so much intelligence elsewhere in the natural world and that humans are not the only beings that can employ logical reasoning. Of course these lizards won't bite the hand that feeds them. They also do not perceive humans as a threat.. I think they make more sense than humans who sometimes destroy the exact thing that sustains them
Having never seen people napping on the ground where huge monitors stroll around, I find this fascinating. how comforting, to know the sleepy guys can be unafraid like that, whilst the creatures just do what they like, and then slide quietly back into the water, without alarming the people. Never saw anything like that
In Thailand they aren't our main food like pork and chicken. Actually they're pest here, often they steal our poultry and pet babies to feed on. But they're lucky they're considered big animal whom we normally don't kill by fear of karma.

I have kept that species and interacted with others. When raised in captivity they seem to enjoy interacting with humans, even when not being handed food. Being partly aquatic, their bodies are not water conservative, so they are messy and their enclosures need a lot of cleanup. A tame water monitor is careful when taking food from a human hand. While these behavioral notes don't apply to wild animals, one in a Bangcock park tolerated a friend's approach and contact.

People in Thailand learn how to live with them by just ignore them. If anyone accidentally stumbled on one, 10 out of 10 they will be the one who first fled from the scene; not us.
Though they are the 2nd Largest Lizard in the world, 3 Meters is the extreme exception. I believe just 1 specimen was found to be that length, but the Water Monitor tends to be be much closer to 1.5-2 m.

A friend who exhibited reptiles had one that was close to that length about 35 years ago. I would visit Mondays when the Maryland Reptile Institute was closed and hand food to Leroy Brown. Behaviorally, they are my favorite lizards. I wish they were less messy and could live as long as a gila monster.
Exception be made again for them in Thailand's parks, especially in the metropolitan area of 7900 km3 where people like to feed them for relaxation. The 3 meters water monitors are often becoming too many that people start getting feared and asked the caretakers to catch them to release in the wild. Actually when you see how the situation is quite often incurred you may start questioning how they're ranked #2 biggest with this significant amount of population.
I have these laying eggs behind my garden wall alongside the Klong. Huge beasts that are quite nervous and scared of humans! At 45kg and at 1.8m length --I won't be bothering them!

They have been living near human for hundreds years. Rangsit area has these lizard everywhere. People tried to get rid off it but they keep coming back. It's just their nature. Those that live in the wild are different type.

I filmed them there some years ago and got the great shot of the Thai people standing to attention for the National Anthem at 8am with water monitors casually carrying on about their normal routine.
As Thai people, I think there is less than 1% people will say "ไม่เป็นไร" (Mị̀ pĕnrị) to that lizard. We call them "เหี้ย" in Thailand. One of the most common word in Thailand school but in the bad way..... Fun Fact : Some people here in Thailand are actually smaller than that lizard :)
I live in Indonesia so I see them regularly too but there's none of them at any city parks and I'm just wondering how are y'all taking your dogs to that park. Cos the dogs I know of go crazy when they see these.
I had one that couldn't make up it's mind about which side of the road it wanted to go to on a motorcycle ride in Thailand one time. My friend riding behind me as well as my self were gearing down and braking as fast as we could on our Harley's. Luckily it finally got off of the road and we keep on our ride.
They are no threat at all. They are skittish of people. I walked by a large one which scampered away quickly. And they are large but not 3 meters large.
I dislike it when people see a very big monitor lizard and call it "modernday dinosaur". Birds are the only surviving dinosaurs, but we don't seem to appreciate that.

It would be nice to know what these creatures are called in Thai, not "Water Monitors" I am sure. Pretty clever video though. When I lived there we had gecko-type lizards called " Ching Choc" and the ones outside that were called "Tuk Kae" (also the sound they make -actually I remember it as more like "took gow"-) but I never ran across one of these. Poisonous snakes and spiders yes, but was unaware of these guys.

I have walked in this park twice in the last two weeks. When you approach, they walk or swim away. They don't want to be near humans.
We have a lot of that here in the Philippines. "Bayawak" is what we call it here

ours are of different species. Some are even frugivorous

“ไอ้เหี้ย!” or “ ihere” can be used in the same way as “oh my god!” too.

I see few of them in my yard now and then. They’re quite chill with human.
As Thai people, I think there is less than 1% people will say "ไม่เป็นไร" (Mị̀ pĕnrị) to that lizard. We call them "เหี้ย" in Thailand. One of the most common word in Thailand school but in the bad way.....
Fun Fact : Some people here in Thailand are actually smaller than that lizard :)

I live in Indonesia so I see them regularly too but there's none of them at any city parks and I'm just wondering how are y'all taking your dogs to that park. Cos the dogs I know of go crazy when they see these.

I had one that couldn't make up it's mind about which side of the road it wanted to go to on a motorcycle ride in Thailand one time. My friend riding behind me as well as my self were gearing down and braking as fast as we could on our Harley's. Luckily it finally got off of the road and we keep on our ride.

I dislike it when people see a very big monitor lizard and call it "modernday dinosaur". Birds are the only surviving dinosaurs, but we don't seem to appreciate that.

It would be nice to know what these creatures are called in Thai, not "Water Monitors" I am sure. Pretty clever video though. When I lived there we had gecko-type lizards called " Ching Choc" and the ones outside that were called "Tuk Kae" (also the sound they make -actually I remember it as more like "took gow"-) but I never ran across one of these. Poisonous snakes and spiders yes, but was unaware of these guys.

we have carnivorous birds in central London parks UK . they swallow the pigeons whole. we all get along fine
