Something else you guys didn’t mention about the adventure DX collection is that in order to play all of the games you have to 100% DX, which means collecting all the emblems and completing all the missions. Which I wouldn’t mind doing in theory but some of those missions can get pretty tedious.
On the argument of Mega Collection vs Plus, it's important to note that Plus traded away all the historic sonic videos for a bunch of Sonic Heroes trailers and behind the scenes stuff, so that might affect the presentation. More important was that Plus' emulation included save states for all games (not a thing with GC), but was riddled with sound effect issues, and for Europeans, that's on top of the 50 hertz thing.
The NL rankings Jon was a part of were some of my favorite videos on that channel during Jon's tenure, so I'm definitely looking forward to seeing him and the classic GVG crew rank some stuff.
So after hearing Steve say that steam took away his version of Sonic 1, 2 and 3&K that he owned for the Genesis Classics release, I had to go check for myself and I can confirm, that I still have them installed on my version of the game since I still have all the DLC for the game installed.
I don't think that Steam took them away from anyone, just that something weird happened with his copy (I installed the collection on a computer that they weren't on before the delisting, and they were still there). There are still plenty of easily available Steam keys out there for the Sonic games (you can get sonic 2 for about $5, and Sonic 3 & Knuckles for about $10, Sonic 1 seems to be a bit more scarce, though, and buying the complete package outside of steam may still give you the sonic games, though again, I'm not sure), so you can still get them if you want them. Honestly, with the Sonic games, I'd say that the PC version jumps up to A tier, since the PC version is, from what I've seen, the only place where any major company has ever actively gave people access to official ROM files to use in separate emulators (thereby nullifying any complaints about emulation issues for this version) and it also has Steam Workshop support, allowing for official access to Rom hacks for any game on the compilation, which, again, no major collection has ever done before or since. PLUS, it does have the VR mode, and, on top of that, back when you could still get the full version on Steam, it came with a free copy of the Christian Whitehead remake of Sonic CD. Honestly, without the context of specifically ranking Sonic collections, it's easily my favorite game collection of all time, and even in this particular context, I'd still give it an A rank, purely because of all the cool stuff that only it does, you CAN still access the Sonic games on that collection, albeit only through second hand purchases (which didn't stop them from ranking any of the previous releases, so that doesn't count for anything), and, with the effort of the modding scene, people could theoretically backport the VAST majority of Sonic Origins extra modes/improvements/Sonic 3''s new ost and Jam's difficulty options. Plus, Sonic 2, 3 & Knuckles, and Mean Bean Machine all had online, on top of a few others, therefore nullifying any unique bonus the Switch online version brought for the Sonics. Just wanted to quickly bash Switch online at some point in here.
Man I’m such a stuttery mess on here sometimes. I hope I didn’t detract away from the flow of the discussion too hard. I’ll keep working on my articulation and delivery of thoughts as time goes on 🙏
No worries AT ALL. It can be hard to get your thoughts into words, but the important part is that you got some good thoughts on these games, and we love to hear them!
You guys left out the genesis 6-pak. It counts as a Sonic compilation even more than the Garfield pack because the five other games included are all good first party Sega Genesis games. In case you're wondering; they are Sonic 1, Streets of Rage 1, Golden Axe 1, Columns, Revenge of Shinobi, and Super Hang on.
I've only owned mega collection, but it has everything I want in a sonic game, so this is my favorite. I'm not really a music purist so it doesn't bother me if it isn't perfect
The taxman ports are amazing but I feel origins dropped the ball when it comes to decision making. Rushing it leading to bugs, not having the Micheal Jackson or og prototype music, and not sharpening the visuals is pretty disappointing. I hope they can at least patch these issues
This was a fun watch! Looking forward to more edited group content! Also I wanted to let Steve know that Sega Genesis Classics have PSVR support on PS4, so maybe there’s still a way for him to play those Sonic games in VR :)
The way I've always seen S tier is that it's essentially an A+, which is separate from just an A. Meaning it doesn't throw off the scale by making B the average, it's just the mark of perfection or near perfection.
Origins is in a really awkward place right now, where the definitive editions of 1, 2 and CD are in it, but are plagued by some pretty unfortunate glitches and issues. Origin's 3 & K also has a lot of issues (not just limited to music), but I feel like it's kind of always going to lose out to AIR just in terms of customizability. When it's patched up (be it by fans or officially), I think it's S, but for what it is now, I'd say low A or even B.
@@sirensongss Mobile controls suck and S3&K isn’t even available. Sonic Origins on Nintendo Switch has normal controls, portability, tv play, and S3&K.
Classic Collection is my S because it's the one that introduced me to the classics. Plus it runs great on my 2DS and now has the original versions of 1- 3 and Knuckles portably, which even Origins doesn't have
Fun Fact: SegaSonic the Hedgehog (1993 arcade game) & Knuckles' Chaotix were meant to be included to Sonic Gems Collection. SegaSonic the Hedgehog was initially planned as a title to be included in this compilation but was left out due to problems with emulating the game's original trackball control scheme, as for Knuckles' Chaotix; there is an art section in the museum indicating the games inclusion. The Streets of Rage trilogy & Bonaza Bros. are bonus games included in the Japanese ports of Gems Collection. Also, an OG Xbox port of Gems Collection was meant to be released but ultimately was cancelled.
Honestly, I’ve been playing through Sonic Origins as my first time experiencing all these games (minus 1), and I’d say it’s a phenomenal bundle that easily deserves S tier. I haven’t really run into any bugs or similar issues that I can think of, I know a lot of others apparently have but I can only judge from my experience and in that way it’s been flawless. The games can be played in widescreen, with infinite lives, and a retry option for special stages. All of those are already massive QOL improvements, and then there’s the story mode adding animated cutscenes between games. They’re absolutely gorgeous to watch, and it’s stunning the way they actually incorporate little story beats to directly connect the games and details that were only in the original manuals. Not to mention mission mode with loads of challenges based on every game, a boss rush for each of them, a thorough soundtrack selection for all of them + some spin-offs + remixes from Smash and other games, AND really neat behind the scenes art like animatics I don’t think have ever been shown before. While my views on the individual games vary, the package as a whole I can’t say is anything less than outstanding. Judging Origins in its entirety it’s probably a GOTY contender for me.
Also should note I’ve only played through one zone so far of 3&K, so I haven’t heard any of the new music that’s apparently not great. But I also don’t have any attachment to either the OG songs or the prototype versions so I might not be as negative on them.
Sonic Origins is my favourite because it has 4 native ground up remasters with many improvements & new features, with animated cutscenes, new mirror & mission modes (over 60 missions), plus a museum with lots of behind the scenes content & a huge music player with remixes from Gens, Smash, TSR, ETC. On top of that the Nintendo Switch version is perfect for playing these games portably, and I’ve personally had absolutely no issues.
The version of Sonic R on the Gems collection is a very fun game. I went into it thinking it would be hilariously bad and instead I played it more than any other game on the collection.

It remains a valuable experience for me, especially w/ that menu music and the mess of extras (I played so much Comix Zone as a kid). While 50hz is a crucial negative for the UK, as a US player I have to rank this as an A.
I had to rebuy mega collection few years ago it’s the only version I’ll play sonic 3&k cause of the music. Y’all should do a megaman collection when battle network collection come out next year
19:05 I really really want someone to make an emulator front-end that looks just like the gamecube mega collection menus. I've seen some really cool front-ends but never something leaning heavily on like that style of presentation.
The Classic Collection on the DS is an absolute D-tier compilation-- the games run HORRIBLY! Any time there are as many as three enemies on screen, the framerate grinds to a halt. Plus, there is a ton of noticeable screen-tearing. Content-wise, it's fine, but execution-wise? It has to be one of the worst ever.
you are 100% right in your comment my friend. i also made a few comments on this video with one of them being about Sonic Classics Collection on DS. its piss poor emulation but everyone i see on the net seems to praise it. ive never understood why lol
@@lakitudude7577 haven't tried it on 3DS but that theory i can believe seeing as the 3DS has more power under its belt but id assume its still pretty dire seeing as it uses an outdated emulation known as Jenesis i believe. Still cant knock it till i tried it and i still own a 3DS so I'll give it a try on the more powerful hardware eventually when i have time and then come back with my overall thoughts on that matter.
@@lakitudude7577 I was actually basing my critique on my experience playing it on a New 3DS XL! Perhaps it is better than it would be on the DS, but even then, it is definitely not the definitive way to play these games.
I will say in regards to Origins, while it isn't a thing you can do if you're stuck on PlayStation and Xbox consoles, you CAN easily mod back in either the Jackson tracks from 3/3&K or the original 1993 prototype tracks on PC and Switch. I don't do Switch modding so I don't know if that's simple or hard to do but on PC it's as simple as taking the two 3&K files in the music folder and replacing them with the mod of your choosing
The games that are in Origins aren't actually unplayable for me in the Steam version of Sega Mega Drive & Genesis Classics. I can't get them on Steam anymore, but since I bought them years ago, I can still play them in the collection. Also out of curiosity, was this recorded before or after the release of Sonic Origins?
I definitely will still put Plus over either of the GameCube collections myself. Sure I'm not PAL, which makes me unhappy about it, but overall I feel that the extra games Plus added were worth it. Gems just didn't have enough enough good games; it had CD, but R and Fighters just weren't great, and half a dozen somewhat GameGear games can't make up for it. I can see people in PAL regions liking Mega Collection over Plus, but I still think Plus is the overall best value for Sonic titles.
I'd argue that Sonic Origins on PC specifically, is S Tier, thanks to Mod support being able to fix the Sonic 3 soundtrack... But yeah, Jam is a good pick for S Tier too.
Sonic R is genuinely fun, and fully agree, the soundtrack is God-tier... Then again, my favourite VG OST's list is wild ride... Xenoblade Chronicles, Majora's Mask, Sonic R, Donkey Kong Country etc.
I have the Mega Collection for PS2, and it was the only Sonic game I owned for a long, long time (a few years ago I got Sonic Mania on my Switch, and that was the second one) I hope Sonic Origin gets a physical release.
Origins could still have slight potential to be in A or S tier if only Sega would give Stealth and his group opportunity to fix bugs and do future patches with new additional content. Right now, it's a mess of an product.
The one major gripe I have with origins is not even with the game itself. It's the fact that they removed sonic 1, 2, and 3&k from steam, that is a major loss to the modding community. There are so many mods that you can no longer play because they were taken off steam.
Sonic Gem Collection has a special place in my heart, though it might be called "Metal Sonic Collection". Seriously, like Sega realized they'd put Metal Sonic as Sonic Heroes' villain without the majority of fans knowing who Metal Sonic even is. It seems so obvious now, "of course Sonic has a robotic double, he's fighting a a villain that builds robots!", but back then Metal Sonic didn't appear in much titles, let alone mainline titles - Only a lost title, an arcade fighting game, and a lame racing game, with appearances in Game Gear titles and as an easter egg in the adventure titles. Sonic Gems collection is really doing double duty, being a companion piece to Mega Collection and properly introducing Metal Sonic to the sixth generation consoles... P.S. love the guy, though he should take a good long rest. He was oversaturated for years now, his appearance barely registers anymore. hope to see him in 2025, and no sooner...
For Sonic Classic Collection DS SEGA called Stephan Dittrich, a homebrew developer who made a very functional Genesis emulator for the Nintendo DS to help and I think that's awesome and precedes Origins in the terms that fans were involved somehow
@@wonderfulwardy back in the day when I was a teenager and only had my DS this is was my way of reliving my childhood gaming life with the genesis library so I have a soft spot for it
You guys made a bit of an error with mega collection, a lot of the extra games were not in the North American version, if I recall I think they were Japan version only or possibly PAL and Japan version I remember spending hours trying to unlock comic zone and not getting it to work and finding out years later why
So glad you guys put the Switch/PS4 Genesis Classics compilation in D tier, and in last overall. The input lag in that is the worst I've ever experienced in any game ever, and it ruins playing any platformer game (ESPECIALLY Sonic 1 & 2) in it IMO. Sonic Classics Collection on DS is pretty good, I think. It's the only official way to play Sonic 3 & Knuckles portably with the original soundtrack. That alone would make it B tier IMO, but otherwise I can also kinda agree with C tier since it doesn't really have any extras. Just the games, and a few illustrations. (I think it should at least be ahead of Sonic Compilation though, same with Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection.)
sorry to correct you on a few things john.... but here goes. 1.) best versions of these games are:- Sonic 1 Forever Sonic 2 Absolute Sonic 3 A.I.R Sonic CD Decompilation 2.) Sonic Jam (as good as it is and a good effort for its time) does still have slowdown on the classic games in the collection when running on original hardware. Sonic 1 hardly, Sonic 3 & Knuckles has some, with Sonic 2 having the worst amount of slowdown in that collection. if however you were to run the game via Beetle Saturn Core Retroarch on Xbox series S/X or Mednafen on PC via emulation.... the slowdown is removed.
This was a fun tier list even if I don't agree with everything. Sonic ds collection should be d tier for it's poor sound quality and which is pretty important when most other collections on this list do at minimum a good job. And I'm kinda joking here but if we consider generations a collection and quality seems to be a primary factor in ranking shouldn't generations be higher you have access to one of the best Sonic games made it's the only way you can get it and you get Sonic 1 as well lol. Also a great feature the steam version of the Genesis collection has is the ability to "officially" play Sonic rom hacks through steam workshop. There are full blown new Sonic games, every playable character you could want, and it's an easy way to play Sonic 3 complete for people who want to support an official release but also want to try mods. Well at least it was until Sega ruined that.
True, but the fact that the games included are *enhanced* native ports rather than simply emulated versions does make up for it. It’s more of quality vs. quantity.
A bit weird they only talked about emulation issues on one of the compilations. And the new origins one, have issues too, 1, 2, cd... have weird bugs, and specially sonic 3 seems like the development was rushed.
@@symphomaniac I'm not saying origin is emulated. For some reason people think that if you port the code is more accurate, but if it's poorly done like this case, you end up with inaccurate results. For "emulation issues" you can check the DS collection, with a very poor framerate.
The biggest issue I have with Sonic origins is the PC version having really bad framerate and performance issues due to the DRM. Otherwise I think it would have been maybe a B Tier for me. Not really a fan of the new remixes of the prototype tracks and that hurts it for me since I love those compositions
Sonic Origins is good but god is it sloppy. So many bugs that are just wild, once a boss straight up froze and became intangible. For some reason time attacks are only in CD (the last game I’d want to do time trials on) They also for some reason removed Proto Palace Zone, the original layout and music of Hidden Palace Zone. While the Sonic 3 songs are the most obvious problem, the other songs are kinda low quality and seem to be mixed weird, also not using the remastered music for the mobile games for some reason. Also for some reason though you can use the drop dash and insta shield at the same time in Sonic 1 debug mode, it’s not an option normally and can’t be done in Sonic 2 or CD at all. And like the insta shield is small but honestly it’s really helpful, especially on the death egg robot (I know that because of Sonic 2 Absolute, which is definitely better). Like the problems are plentiful and it’s certainly overpriced, but if you just want these games Origins is decent. Sega better patch this game because the fact they messed up the already existing mobile ports is ridiculous
“You have to take into account when they were made”??? I don’t get that logic at all. This is a list of what’s the best Sonic collection, period. Literally the only thing that Sonic Origins sucks at is the music thing in part 3. Other than that, there is no better way to play those games.
Still boggles my mind, all of these collections. They contained more than a modern day remaster with Origins. Sega you could have done so much more. 🤦 Seriously what happened? My beef with Origins: Dlc. Seriously this stings. Various bugs (also the devs were unable to patch before release) Missing music. I would put Origins at a C. Sega should have given the devs time to fix issues. Dlc was a mistake. I have no plans to buy Origins. I enjoyed the games way back when. Excellent look back at how each library ranks vs one another.
Errr nice idea but, what is the point in ranking the compilations without consider if the emulation of the games were good or bad (most are bad) as example: sonic jam has bad input lag and some slowdowns making it a ok to bad compilation.
Mega Collection will always be *the* Sonic Compilation for me. It was my introduction to Sonic, and my love for the franchise grew from there!
It was my introduction to sonic 3 which imo is the best 2d sonic, so memorable. It also introduced me to comic zone which was awesome
Same with me I don't think I would've played the 2d games if it wasn't for that collection owned it on pc and original xbox.

Fun fact: before origins, that was the last time sonic 3k was released before being put in legal purgatory for 50+ years.
What a way to go out huh?
you are 100% right in your comment my friend. i also made a few comments on this video with one of them being about Sonic Classics Collection on DS.
its piss poor emulation but everyone i see on the net seems to praise it. ive never understood why lol
It runs better on a dsi or 3ds
The DS version was really cool, I'm shock it's soo low.
piss poor emulation.
@@wonderfulwardy in fairness. Tons of graphical and sound issues, and it only runs marginally better on newer DS models
Sonic 1-3 are still playable for me as well on Steam.
@@Just10Percent For me as well.
I never played the Game Gear version, but Garfield: Caught in the Act is a pretty good game on Genesis and PC imo.
I only remember pain
sonic and garfield should have been S tier for one reason: it's the only one with Baku Baku, cant beat that.
That's kinda odd. Cuz on my installed version of the Genesis Classics on Steam, I still have all the Sonic games on there
I'd argue that Sonic Origins on PC specifically, is S Tier, thanks to Mod support being able to fix the Sonic 3 soundtrack... But yeah, Jam is a good pick for S Tier too.
The pc version seems to have the most issues though or is at least the most unpredictable, as some people can’t even get past the title screen.
I'm begging whoever keeps nosebreathing through this entire thing to put a noise gate on their mic
Sonic R is genuinely fun, and fully agree, the soundtrack is God-tier... Then again, my favourite VG OST's list is wild ride... Xenoblade Chronicles, Majora's Mask, Sonic R, Donkey Kong Country etc.
I have the Mega Collection for PS2, and it was the only Sonic game I owned for a long, long time (a few years ago I got Sonic Mania on my Switch, and that was the second one)
I hope Sonic Origin gets a physical release.
classic collection was my shit back in the day and I will not accept classic collection slander
I like this idea!
I'll definitely get this collection eventually but playing sonic 3 AIR at The moment might delay that for a bit. Great video and tier list you guys!
For Sonic Classic Collection DS SEGA called Stephan Dittrich, a homebrew developer who made a very functional Genesis emulator for the Nintendo DS to help and I think that's awesome and precedes Origins in the terms that fans were involved somehow
yea, The emulator was called Jenesis i believe, but the games still ran like shit
@@wonderfulwardy back in the day when I was a teenager and only had my DS this is was my way of reliving my childhood gaming life with the genesis library so I have a soft spot for it
You guys made a bit of an error with mega collection, a lot of the extra games were not in the North American version, if I recall I think they were Japan version only or possibly PAL and Japan version
I remember spending hours trying to unlock comic zone and not getting it to work and finding out years later why
I loved Baku Baku, fantastic puzzle game!
Guys help me out, what’s the last song that plays in the background of this video?
Is the xbox pal version of mega collection plus 50hz. I feel like it is 60hz and only ps2 is 50 but i could be wrong
1.) best versions of these games are:-
Sonic 1 Forever
Sonic 2 Absolute
Sonic 3 A.I.R
Sonic CD Decompilation
2.) Sonic Jam (as good as it is and a good effort for its time) does still have slowdown on the classic games in the collection when running on original hardware.
How on earth can you rank Sonic and Garfield above the Sonic Classics Collection on Genesis?
Maybe after some patching I could agree that origens is better than Mega collection. However the inclusion of the Archie covers makes that my S.
Sonic Dreams Collection: SSSSS Tier.
I can’t recall specifics, but I’ve heard Origins has some unexpected issues.
I love these tier lists! All we’re missing is Brandon
I love these ranking videos lol
Don't worry guys, I also love lasagna
Origins just didn’t have enough games for me. Very disappointed that it didn’t have spin ball or other spin-offs
True, but the fact that the games included are *enhanced* native ports rather than simply emulated versions does make up for it. It’s more of quality vs. quantity.
Rank reskinned/relabeled nintendo games next! (Like mario bros 2). The game that would take the S tier spot for me is easily star fox adventures 😍
Is there a turn based strategy sonic game?
A bit weird they only talked about emulation issues on one of the compilations. And the new origins one, have issues too, 1, 2, cd... have weird bugs, and specially sonic 3 seems like the development was rushed.
Well those technically aren't emulations
@@symphomaniac I'm not saying origin is emulated. For some reason people think that if you port the code is more accurate, but if it's poorly done like this case, you end up with inaccurate results. For "emulation issues" you can check the DS collection, with a very poor framerate.
Steve did something wrong with his install, the games haven't been removed for existing owners.
The biggest issue I have with Sonic origins is the PC version having really bad framerate and performance issues due to the DRM. Otherwise I think it would have been maybe a B Tier for me. Not really a fan of the new remixes of the prototype tracks and that hurts it for me since I love those compositions
I love this idea lmfao
36:03 sonic ds collection time
Wait are you telling me they stole my steam version of S3&K???
Origins and mega colection and plus
Sonic Origins is Sonic Jam 2
“You have to take into account when they were made”???
I don’t get that logic at all. This is a list of what’s the best Sonic collection, period. Literally the only thing that Sonic Origins sucks at is the music thing in part 3. Other than that, there is no better way to play those games.
Missing Dreamcast Collection smh!
@TEXT ME ON TELEGRAM @GOODVIBESGAMING LET'S GOOOOO!!! THANKS GVG!!
Still boggles my mind, all of these collections. They contained more than a modern day remaster with Origins. Sega you could have done so much more. 🤦
Seriously what happened?
My beef with Origins:
Dlc. Seriously this stings.
Various bugs (also the devs were unable to patch before release)
Missing music.
I would put Origins at a C. Sega should have given the devs time to fix issues. Dlc was a mistake.
I have no plans to buy Origins. I enjoyed the games way back when.
Excellent look back at how each library ranks vs one another.
If origins plus were here I would say a or s
Errr nice idea but, what is the point in ranking the compilations without consider if the emulation of the games were good or bad (most are bad) as example: sonic jam has bad input lag and some slowdowns making it a ok to bad compilation.
