That plaque you read that is above where the Dunbar wrecked, over the fence from it an onlooker carved the following into the rock 5 days after the event DUNBAR CP 25th AUG 1857 It was 're-cut' by an individual in 1906 and again in 1992. I found it a few years back, it's weathered a little but you can still read it
oh wow , I didn't realise we got lost looking for the anchor and had to ask someone walking past , I'm sorry I didn't include it , thanks so much for telling me Brett and thankyou for watching , I hope your well x
@@cemeteriesdownunder9247 No worries, you wouldn't really know it was there unless you knew about it. I had seen an old photo of it on a Facebook group so went looking for it
To understand the past, is to appreciate the future. To think of all those families who futures was extinguished in this tragedy. I imagine the sole survivor must have carried a heavy burden of survivors guilt through his lifetime. Fascinating story, thanks for sharing.
Sorry I missed this....catching up on videos now!! Wow such a sad and tragic story 😢 Loved getting to see the graves, mass grave and memorial. Excellent video and gorgeous views!!
Wow. What a tragic story. I can't imagine what the people involved in the recovery went through and the families of the victims, too. Thank you for telling this story.
Many years ago I was a real estate agent on the Gold Coast. We were looking at a house and I commented on the poster on the wall concerning the Dunbar Company. The owner asked if I'd heard of the Dunbar and was blown away when I told him what I knew. Can't remember if it was him or his wife who was descended from the Dunbar family.
Aww the grave. Oh Goodness. May they all be blessed. That had to be a sad time. A really sad time. A whole family. Wow the ocean is so calm but when it is not it can be a killer for sure. Thanks for sharing.
There was also the wreck of the Catherine Adamson around the same time. Possibly the mass grave includes those who died on both ships. I note it says something about 'Dunbar and Catherine'.
I can't believe how many times I've driven by that part of Old South Head Rd. We've been to baby and birthday parties along there and friends go running along that track. And after 27 years in Australia, living in the same Council district, I'd never heard of it until last night. We seem to focus more on those who have lost their lives, going over the Gap by choice, than by terrible accident. First thing this morning I told my husband and daughter, both native born, of this tragedy. The wreck is still under there, pinned by the rocks, at least it was in the 1960s, as per newsreel footage, of cute models diving the wreck.
Hi Michelle , thanks so much for watching , what a tragedy it was imagine sailing all that way only to be in that disaster on arrival or that poor lone survivor seeing all that horror below
Very very sad. Anyone know what happened too the guy that lived? Great shot of the water. I didn't see a lighthouse in your shot so they build one? Great story. Hey from Texas❤️
Hi Brenda , the survivors story was at the end , when the Dunbar sank there was no lighthouse at the time after the accident they made a lighthouse . thanks for watching x
Well, as of last August, there was a commemoration of the wreck, a descendant of the one survivor, Mr Johnson, attended the ceremony. He lives locally in the neighborhood that grew up on the Harbour side close to the wreck.
Hi Kim , I read about it once can't remember where and used to walk along there and see the memorial often , it wasn't until I started exploring cemeteries I came across the mass grave in Camperdown , what a tragedy hey , thanks for watching x hope your well x
Excellent work you two! Sorry I couldn’t get involved more with the chat but I was at work. And since I drive semi trailers it wasn’t the best time to be on my phone lol. But thoroughly enjoyed the video and it inspires me to do more and mork work myself 😊
your more than welcome , I totally understand, I work as a disability nurse and work long hours , the chat was going so fast I was trying to catch up , I really appreciate your support and kind words x
never heard about the dunbar until last friday. my dad likes finding family members at cemetaries. he took me to camperdown and we saw the mass grave. that was the first i have heard about it. i have seen the anchor at the gap plenty of times, but never paid much attention to it, always thought it was a type of decoration..very tragic accident 😢 plus back than alot of people weren’t trained to swim like they are today… as tragic as it is, it would make for a good movie.

Cemetery in a seashore nice,, is the ship dumbo existed in the shores of australia? Is that ship made in australia?
Hi Mind freak , the dunbar was built in UK and sank near Sydney Australia and the people are buried in a Sydney cemetery
