I always thought that the Darings were one of the best looking destroyers built. I was on her sister ship the Vendetta and jeez this brings back some memories.
I served on Vendetta too, late '70s. I reckon the Darings handled a rough sea better than the DDGs I served on later. Great ships!

I too served on Vendetta. Absolutely my favourite of the 6 ships I was on. Last of the great ‘gunnery’ vessels.
I got to go on the Vampire in 1986 when it was being decommissioned. It came through Newcastle and stopped so people could go on board and have a look. I learnt a lot about it that day it was awesome!!
I used to work with a guy that served on H.M.A.S. Vampire till the day she was decommissioned. He told me he thought she was scraped till the day he was walking around Darling harbor with he's wife. and spotted he's old ship sitting at the museum.
lucky H.M.A.S. Vampire didn't end up in the beakers yard.
the story reminds me of the HMS Belfast.

Are the good old days , " 6 degrees to port , it leans if I remember correctly, and the song "6 months in a leaky boat" comes to mind as well from the early 80's.
I did the trip "Up Top" on the VAMPIRE in 1969. I didn't appreciate what a good wicket I was on when in the Navy. Thinking back now it was the best time of my life and I have a soft spot in my heart for the Old Girl.
Did 2 up top trips & RIMPAC in Hawaii as well. It was absolute gold back in the day. Served on Stuart & Swan great times & no regrets, i was a Stoker.
Last of the all gun Daring class of British destroyers built shortly after WW2. Thankfully Australia saw fit to preserve the ship, she's a Beauty!
Dad used to take us to Station Pier to tour the Navy ships. It was so exciting as a little boy. Great memories. Maybe I got my love of ships from these visits.
Thanks for the walk through - Ops annexes, (1 and 2) Ops room, and the Fwd and aft M22 radar room - worked on most of the gear in those spaces at some time or other during 3 postings (Vendetta twice, Vampire once). Also looked after the radar in the two round domes Fwd and Aft. They are the search/track for the Gun Fire Control System. Thanks for the memories.
Re: No proximity fuse on display in the Gun Room, "We don't have any on display because the Navy wouldn't give us any." Navy's attitude was probably, " We've given you two of the three types of fuses. Isn't that enough? You do realise this all comes out of our budget???" Very informative video. One suggestion I would like to make, is to have a schematic of the length of the ship and highlight on it the area you are now going to talk about. Thank you 👍🏻
On the bridge - "Sonar equipment - used to identify submarines...." No; it isn't. THAT is a JUA radar display, nothing to do with sonar. Being on the bridge, it is primarily used for navigation.
There is NO sonar gear on the bridge, (apart from a few repeaters); all that gear is in the Sonar Control Room, next to the Ops room.
Indeed! I learned how to use those displays at HMAS Watson in 88...
@@NoName-ds5uq Ops room is full of gear, and he leaves most of it out.
I know this is for the "average person", so he keeps it general; but showing one display (the SPA 50 air display) and saying "that's the radar" (multiple radar displays in ops and all can show all 3 search radars) is pretty misleading.
And he doesn't mention the Fwd gun system console (other one is aft); which controls main armament and therefore a primary piece of gear.
Once he gets to the gunbay, bit more informative and correct; the Chief gunbuster knows his gear. Shame they didn't have an ex S rate to do the same for ops.
Good to see Vampire again though. Been to sea in Vampire and Vendetta.

Daring class. Did my MEM training on the Diamond. My chief stokers first ship was the Delight. Fine ships.
I've been on that ship many times, my dad was in the navy and he use to take my brother and myself to the maritime museum all the time : )
She was still cruising at 30 knots she would do 37 knots and that's from a very reliable source and was achieved on its way back from the far East on the west coast of Australia.
The Greatest & Best time of my life from 1975 to 1981 I was a ABWM (Weapons Mechanic) my battle station was N°2 on the left gun & watching him hands locked together
slamming the rammer certainly brings back some fast paced fond memories.
I wonder if you were that WM bloke having a snooze on the deck next to the gun bay,when a group of us, phase 1 under training greenies walked pass, after we came onboard,for a bit of a look/see jolly from Cerberus.

I saw the Vampire in person at the museum in Sydney awhile back, she was quite impressive to look at. Mainly because i had never been so close to a warship before.

I know for a fact you can also say that about tank crews and aircrew, such as my grandfather who was a waist gunner on a B-17. He would fill my young head with his war stories, and those of his friends. Hell because he was a trained mechanic for the bird he explained to me in great detail about how she flew, before I entered grade school I knew the deference between a radial engine and an in-line and there strengths and weaknesses! (Also OMG nerdgasm moment, I got a reply from The Challenger! :D)
+Andrew Schembri cool my grand dad didnt talk much about war ( he joint the viet minh since he was 15 and fight the france(whom try to recolonized us after ww2 and america support them ) then he fought agiant the american during vietnam war ( but at that time he had been train from military school and become a officer and work in some map room in hanoi ( lucky if he go to the south agiant he might die many vietnamese people die during vietnam war) he never talk about his fighting memory during the time he fight the france in area near by saigon he only talk about what they eat during that time and how bad the condition to live in jungle and about time he work in the general staff ( something about map ) and that all and he never talk much about war time ( later i find out many people dont wan to talk much or remember much about fighting time cause they might had lose friend and bad memories ) most of war stor i hear is from my grandmother/mother about the american bombing on hanoi during vietnam war and how they hide under bungker with other people and not sure if they gona wake up after go to sleep in the bungker + talk about some unlucky guy that didnt get in the bungker intime and get hit by a bomb and his head flew over 100 meter and land next to the bungker door

D68 Or the Original Vampire was the ship my Pops (mum's dad) Dad's (so my moms dad's dad.) was on that ship. He went down. He survived.
Just to remember HMAS VOYAGER, lost with the loss of 82 of her crew in 1964. HMAS VAMPIRE, is in some respects, a memorial to that sister ship. I have toured this ship and recommend a tour to anyone interested. Our last Gunship.

Seeing that gun bay was really nice. I went around to look for a video of a gun bay and the crew within it in operation, but I couldn't find one.

I really love to see complex systems work their magic- and even more so love to see people working with the system, so fluidly that they essentially become part of the machine, moving like clockwork, never missing their timing, it's so great!

Am a volunteer guide at the Maritime Museum and doing internet digging on the vessels. I found this clip from HMAS Parramatta which is not the Vampire but looks like the same gun type?

I served on HMAS VAmpire right up until her decom cruise I was a comms tech, lived in 3DZ mess right under Junior sailors galley, Almost got washed off the iron deck in great Australian bight 1 night.

nice Video but this video make me remember the only Destroyer Tunisia ever had ( yes it was old WW2 Destroyer ) she was named President Bourgiba and she was Edsall-class destroyer escort ( the orginal name was USS Thomas J. Gary ) but sadly she suffered a major fire on 16 April 1992 and is no longer operational

At 4:15 diagram shows her fitted with twin 40mm Bofors on her forward superstructure. THIS IS INCORRECT, she, like her sister ship HMAS VENDETTA, was only ever fitted with SINGLE mounts in these locations. However, the earlier HMAS VOYAGER was fitted with twin STAG. Mountings. How do I know, I served in Vendetta in 1967 then again 1970-1971
In fact the diagram appears to be that of the British “As Designed” Darings and NOT the modified Australian Darings of the Vampire/Vendetta types.

Same I love the maritime museum. Whenever I traveled for work to Sydney I stayed just up the road in Pyrmont so would make a point to visit every time. I learned I could never be a submariner!
It should be pointed out that the Maritime Museum is only about a mile from where the Vampire was built at Cockatoo Island Naval Dockyard, for while it was based on a British design, it was built in Sydney and had a number of local modifications not present on the British built ships, including air conditioning and improved crew facilities. The ship earned battle honours Malaysia 1964-1966 and while decommisioned, it retains the right to fly the white ensign, possibly because the navy still uses the ship as a training vessel for mine-clearance divers. Every 5 years the navy takes the ship into dry dock at Garden Island naval base (HMAS Kutabul) for maintenance and this has sometimes caused incorrect rumours that the ship is being refitted to be returned to active service. As a result of the best of care, visiting the ship reveals that the ship is in excellent condition, and is no rust bucket as might be expected of a decommisioned ship. The ticket to go aboard allows the visitor to explore places such as the gun room where part of this video was filmed. It is a highlight of visiting the museum and highly recommendable to anyone visiting Sydney.

In Malaysia have 2 old ship built by British KD Hang Tuah and KD Rahmat . Already in service for 40 to 50 year's ..this 2 class frigate for royal Malaysian navy..I hope wwship can see this 2 ship..

HMAS Vampire I was lost with the Carrier HMS Hermes in WW2. It would be a tribute to both ships which were lost together.
I was a Radio Operator on Hmas Derwent. There were never any telegrams being recieved for sailors. All communications came from Canberra or Darwin Navcommstas, and it was strictly military related. No time to recieve personal messages, unnless there was a serious family incident for a sailor, and the message would come through military channels for his HOD. No telegrams, no pizza delivery and no flowers. BTW That is JUA Radar on the bridge, not Sonar. I think the presenter must have been setup.

What was the purpose of a Destroyer class ship back in the day, in the WWI-WWII era? What was their roles? Were they basically Cruiser hunters? Were they designed to hunt other Destroyers? Did they act as Air Craft Carrier protection, because it wasn't worth having a Battleship protect it? They certainly didn't have the guns to go toe-to-toe with Battleships - the Destroyers guns would merely tickle a Battleship.
So, what the _hell_ did Destroyers do?
Everything, really. They were the navy's work horse, generally speaking. Originally the idea was derived from torpedo boats which were designed as fast vessels used to counter enemy battleships...
E.g. in the battle of Jutland, destroyer torpedo attacks were successfully deployed by the German fleet to keep the British battleships at bay. During WW2 destroyers (and lighter corvettes) were used as convoy escorts, to hunt down submarines and provide AA fire support. Destroyers also might be used as mine laying vessels. Or simply as part of a battleship centered task force, doing reconnaissance work and covering their supporting cruisers. By all means, rather ask, what didn't destroyers do, because those ships were versatile and all over the theatre of naval war
NovaMan 350 Destroyers and frigates are both support vessels for a battle group that carry out many jobs, however destroyers were historically larger, faster, and more heavily armed. These days the biggest difference is that frigates have mostly an anti-submarine role, but are more general purpose ships. Destroyers have an anti-aircraft role that includes radar and missiles aimed at longer distance aerial attack. In older times destroyers tended to be very fast compared to frigates but current destroyers and frigates have similar speeds.
In summary: in older times destroyers were very fast assets, generally protecting larger, more powerful ships. Today that has evolved into air warfare ships with very sophisticated radar and missiles. They still protect bigger ships. It is their role that separates them from frigates. Destroyers tend to be more expensive than frigates so navies have more frigates, and only the navies of wealthier nations have modern destroyers.

@ 00:53 on just a technical point the Latin word has been misspelled. It should be 'Audeamus' which has the meaning the narrator quoted. Audamus has no Latin meaning

Atllep you can't go into the boiler room on the vampire anymore. My grandfather was a stoker on the vampire so it would be good to check it out
“Ship’s Compass”? More correctly “The bridge’s Gyro Compass repeater” The Ship’s compass is the magnetic compass with the two telltale iron balls on port and stbd side of the compass.

u said in a previous video that your games are historically acurate. but in wows the germans only have cruisers. but in actuka fact there are many more ships e.g. there is this one war ship that all of the countrys feared, so if thay saw it or know were it is gona be, then that turned around and left. plz ad more german warships

She underwent further repairs throughout June, and resumed convoy defence with the group in July-August. About the size of a ANZAC Frigate tonnage wise and only 5 meters longer. New destroyers and future frigates are double that tonnage.twin turrets are far too slow to target a missile.
You dont use a 5inch as AA either thats what SAMs are for.

An open bride till 1970, that is rather disturbing giving the status of the cold war.
For a ship that was almost exclusively deployed with the Australian or Royal Navy South East Asian operations it makes sense given the climate.
I was on the sister ship Vendetta and did the Vietnam deployment. We had the open bridge and it was not enclosed till the ‘73 refit. They were the best sea keeping ships at that time. Best looking as well.
