This is not the end of the whole Half Life story, just the end of a story arc that started with HL2. There are still unfinished questions about who or what even the G-Man is and what his plans for Alyx Vance and Adrian Shephard are.
Mark Laidlaw himself stated that this is not the end of the whole story.
HL Alyx makes quite alof of sense since she is the one continuing the story
@@alexanderschmidt8305 Woah... good catch.
It seems like Valve has intended to move the Franchise into Alyx's hands for a long time. The only reason it's a Prequel is because how terrifying a sequel is.
@@PepicWalrus, Your comment is about 50% accurate considering HLA ending
@@two-facedhypocrite3809 The fans will continue the original (Epistle 3) with projects like Project Borealis, Project Alyph, etc. Meanwhile Valve itself gonna start with an another path for the story, where things are a bit different. Meaning there are 2 timelines, one being original and one being modified by G-Man.
The reason they do that is to let the fans that want to see the next episode of half life happening since it's been 13 years and when they do that, Valve have to somehow continue their own game story with a completely different one, basically giving a modding community a chance to make a story out of an Epistle 3 fragment. If they wouldn't , Valve would need to cancel all of those projects due to em already doing the one.
Life feels different now, like the end of an era.

Hello comment from 6 years ago.
Honestly, I kinda like how Lovecraftian the ending is. The Combine is supposed to be an interdimensional empire that colonized millions of planets. Earth is probably a insignificant spot within the entire universe, which is why it is relegated with a skeleton crew. Remember, Earth only took 7 hours to fall, the fact that they got beaten by a bunch of poorly armed rebel seems extremely suspicious
@GoTi4No that's what I am saying. The Combine thinks Earth military is so pathetic (got beaten in 7 hours) that it's not worth their effort in keeping their much more advanced equipments around (which we may never see) instead relying on basically the equivalent of patrol choppers (gunship), heavy riot vehicles (Strider) and localized cyborgs to keep the system in check while they mine the resource + keeping the portal open through the Citadel in case of an emergency.
Issue is that they only have 1 offworld portal and if it closes (which it does), the remaining Combine is stuck on Earth
I think this is all G Man. He's the reason they won and is on the side of the rebels. It's like you completely forgot about him
What if the combine secretly let some rebels operate hnderground so they could study the rebels portal tech
What if the crab and mortarsynths meant to apear in episode 1
@@VEE0034 he's an agent of chaos. All he's done is throw spanners at fate to cause the maximum amount of carnage because that's where he thrives. Don't think he cares about the rebels winning so much as he does fulfilling his mission, which looks like it's to fight the Combine. I reckon he's a hyper advanced intelligence from a race that a) the Combine don't know about, b) is a LOT smarter than they are but c) are not a military match.
Their only chance is to influence anti-Combine actions across the multiverse so that they are weakened incrementally and, over centuries or millenia are relegated to a second tier concern or destroyed.
Gordon Freeman was significant because of his time, place and circumstance. Because of him, G Man secured control of Xen so the Combine will find teleportation harder. This was rendered irrelevant by the portal storms caused by Nihilanth's death, so next best option, use Freeman to galvanise a planet-wide rebellion so the Combine doesn't crack intra-dimensional teleportation, while also developing Alyx, the replacement wildcard.
What Valve has done to it's loyal fanbase in the past years is pretty much mental abuse
Gaben's not cut out for making games, he's too perfectionist; his commentary that he's incapable of thinking about Half Life as anything less than a series of missed opportunities shows how different his mind really works than the average consumer of his products. He (now) prefers to think of Half Life as a technology demonstrator, rapidly superseded by Portal (G-rated and console friendly) which was itself rapidly superseded by Steam and (Gabe's new pet project) VR everything. Despite nobody being willing to pay $300 for goggles yet and the technology still being rudimentary at best. The man willingly went to Microsoft to learn his trade; I say it again, HE DOES NOT SEE HIMSELF AS A GAME DESIGNER.
DOTA is so far beneath HL1-era Gabe that I'm 100% sure he's embarassed to have the two compared in detail. Microtransactions and 30% cuts to prop up a life of leisurely butterfly chasing vs. the good old days when he was hungry and had to prove himself. Gabe HATES to prove himself, because he has a shitty self-esteem. Gaben needs a Rocky II or he's going to go the way of Romero and Pitchford.
Yeah, unless it’s revolutionary, he doesn’t make it

G-Mans Intentions was for Gordon to stir the pot, leading to the events that would take place on the borealis. G-Man wants the borealis destroyed and sees the combine as a threat in his conquest to control the universe with whatever pawn of his choosing. Alyx takes initiative in arming the borealis targeting the combine command resparking interest to the GMan as the combine command center would be destroyed thanks to alyx whom GMan would take as his new pawn tossing Gordon to the wolf’s. However the vorts save Gordon as he has saved them. What a masterpiece ending for an incredible story arch
You can really picture Gordon’s return, the humans and vorts won the war at an extremely devastating cost to the point where earth is hardly even recognizable anymore, the fate of the combine is most likely the race deteriorated due to the destruction of their power house or they fled to one of the other planets they conquered.
Didn’t u hear the part where the borealis was futile????
@Justin Pirelli
I wouldn't say the GMan in particular but whoever or whatever he works for, cause in episode 2 he says he has employers.
Well, not really Gman's plot to control since he adheres to people above him.
@@samiamtheman7379 I think he’s a freelancer and his “employers” are who ever offers him what he seeks. I secretly believe he is trying to stick it to his own employers in some way

Chances are The entire story will be completely different to this story, the borealis will probably have something to do with the story but its most likely that they would try to compeletly end the story so they wouldnt have to deal with a half life 4 and could finally let the series rest

so episode 3 was clearly meant to be a conclusion to half life 2 rather than the whole series
Laidlaw (the writer of HL2 and episodes) and also Viktor Antonov (the head graphic designer for these games), both left the company a few years after EP2 was released, because Valve kept stalling and not wanting to release a sequel, these guys became frustrated and left the company.
Now after Laidlaw finally released the final plot for us, now Valve/Gabe and it's new game creators are changing the story, naturally it's to be expected, they couldn't really follow on with the story after it's fully released by Laidlaw.
So now they are changing the entire plot.
What we see in this video however, is the original HL series plot, what you could call the canon for HL. Laidlaw waited long enough, he waited 9 years, he finally gave us the story finalisation when he probably realised that he is getting old and may die and then the final plot would die with him (because valve itself will probably never finish the series, or at least do it in an honest way to the original story created by the head writer).
So the game just ends being left unsure if the resistance succeeded or not?
Don't. Please, just don't.
The hl community is the resistance. It’s up to us if we succeed or not.
Welcome to Valve.
Wow guys I can't wait for Half Life 2 Episode 4!
AppleToaster lmao there was gonna be an episode 4, it was gonna be a spinoff set in Raveholm and would give Father Grigori a backstory.
He basically gave us the blueprint for half life 2: ep 3
I'm pretty sure that was his intention, if valve won't do it, someone else will
If only Gordon was real so he could know how many people still remember him........
What of Gordon was real, he saved Earth and we simply forgot about him like in the story... We are just remembering him again.
Valve: "Forget about Freeman"
Wait.. so Gordon ends up in the future in the end..
PhilTheThrill yes
Its unclear which is what I hate
Just like how portal takes place in the future
Im being completely serious but i got stranger danger vibes when gman asked alyx to follow him, and gordon said few will remember him. He saved fucking earth and he is saying i will be forgotten, he saved like the multiverse!
Patouie bittersweet ending
Except he may not have saved Earth in the long run. Just temporarily.
I mean it could be decades or over a century
9:15
The 9 Hour Armageddon
is The 7 Hour War
Yeah most of the names and concepts were changed on the original letter, my first thought is because of copyright issues (since he had left valve at the time and valve held the rights for the story) also why its named epistle 3 and not episode 3.
Dr. Breen was right all along. He did nothing wrong. He knew how unfathomably powerful the Combine truly were and that we could either comply or be completely wiped out.
Have you even played half life 2?
@@thejustinsteffanHave you?
Just finished HL:Alyx, and damn... at the end Lightning McQueen won the piston cup :’)
Lol
Wait, did that happen before or after Thanos sacrificed himself to save the universe?
Mistjor thanks for clarifying, I couldn't remember that part of the story that well. In my opinion it was vastly overshadowed by Rick turning himself into a pickle using Combine technology.
So basically what they wanted to do is to kill off Gordon at some point and alyx is the successor of Gordon. I like how they deleted the whole borealis story and got on with the important stuff. Gordon's Alyx's and G-man's relationship. The gman is confirmed to be the devil archetype. If not the Satan himself. And obviously the last boss. What I see is needed is there next chapter to release alyx and Gordon to sacrifice himself. And another game with gman as the final villain. Great story telling so far.
Yeah gordon was supposed to fly the borealis into the dyson sphere and kill the entire empire including himself.
Hardly. Gman said it himself in Half Life 1. His employer gave him the go ahead to hire Gordon. Gman is not the big man on top.
I think gordon was like the best one there can be for the job gman offered but he realised whats going on and broke free so gman had to take alys as she is the second on the list or something
"I Like how they deleted the whole borealis story" And i don't like that Half life alyx ruined everything and the half life 2's real plot. Unfornately, none of the youtubers saying the real problem about Half life alyx.
You talking bs
"I exited you know better than I the appropriate course of action" -is the narrator expecting us to build the game?

Half life Alyx retcons the story. So it's anyone's guess where valve will take the hl3 next.
it does if you have a feeble understanding of the whole entire game which i guess you do.... g man creates a break in time one timeline where alyx saves eli and one where epistle 3 takes place ro else there would be a paradox.
I wouldn’t say retcon
It doesn’t retcon, it just establishes that there’s multiple timelines
After Half Life Alyx this feels as if its canon, not that it actually happens in the game, but what would’ve happened if Alyx never saved her father at the end. Either way Alyx ends up going with the G-man to parts unknown. Maybe some things are best left un-nudged.
what if the next HL is us going back to make sure Eli dies to fix the timeline
“Come along with me now, we’ve places to do and things to be,” - Is that a mistake by Marc, or is it intentionally cryptic?
Pretty sure this is a direct quote from G-man honestly.
@@Skycoder13 Yeah, and Mr Laidlaw wrote him, what's your point? I'm asking if the semantic error was accidental or purposeful?
@@PalaceDude Purposeful
@@Skycoder13 Very interesting.
our journey have ended.
Im ready to leave this world.
Wow, amazing video. Really
Although is anyone disappointed with what we are given, don't know anything about G-man (didn't expect but wanted to find out who he was working with), or the secret Eli had or what happens to Alex and his connection with Alex and Eli. I know valve always used HL to innovate, but a large majority of fans (imo) loved it for the story and world it told.
I guess this is the best we can expect.
I think that, if this Episode 3 was actually real, this would be the exact right amount of information about the G-Man.
In HL1 we see that he can appear in strange places, and that he had some level of communication with scientists at Black Mesa. And then we learn at the end that we were doing his bidding, he can teleport you anywhere, and he can put you into stasis. (We perhaps learn from the Nihilanth that he is not man, and that he deceives us, but that's open for interpretation).
In HL2 we learn that he has a much larger path set out for us than we originally knew. We learn that he can stop time, and that he wanted us to destroy the portal at the Citadel.
In Episodes 1 and 2 we learn that the Vortigaunts are aware of him. And that they are capable of overpowering his influence. We learn that he has been making deals with other main characters of the plot, specifically Eli (But this opens up the possibility that he's controlling everyone).
And in this version of Episode 3 we would learn that he also communicates with Alyx, and that he doesn't care if you die now that the Vortigaunts have rescued you from his influence.
Now after writing this out, I've noticed some interesting connections. Compare G-man's abilities with the Bootstrap device. They are almost identical. G-Man can teleport anywhere he wants and he can control time. The bootstrap device was also created before the Black Mesa Incident. Perhaps G-Man's employers are an alien race that has the same technology as the Bootstrap Device, and they ensure their superiority by messing with any species that comes close to that same technology. That would explain why G-Man manipulated Black Mesa Scientists into causing the resonance cascade and nearly destroying the human race. Imagine this: G-Man tells Eli that he will kill Alyx if he doesn't hold up his end of the bargain. We never learn what his end of the bargain is. Imagine that his end of the bargain is that the Borealis must be destroyed (Borealis has the Bootstrap device). Afterall, his dying words are "DESTROY THE BOREALIS!" What if his last words are to ensure his daughter lives on. Now Look at the end of Epistle 3, as soon as Alyx and Gordon set the Borealis on it's collision course, the G-Man steps in and takes Alyx with him. G-Man saw that Eli's end of the bargain was held up! The combine/advisors don't want the Borealis destroyed because the Combine wants that technology. Mossman and the resistance don't want it destroyed because they want that technology too. The only person who wants that technology destroyed seems to be the G-Man.
Okay, I have to make a video about this. Thanks for the comment.
Portal Of Awesome Holy shit. So earth, us, aren't even a part of this battle and struggle. We merely existed in it, watched 2 greater nations or whatever fight eachother on our soil. We brought upon our own destruction, with this higher species influencing us to bring another higher species to manipulate us into halting progression.
@@PortalOfAwesome
I know this is two years old, but I have one question.
If the G-Man's objective is to prevent any other species from attaining the ability of manipulating space and time in the way he has shown. What about the Vortigaunts then? Shoudn't they be one of his targets, considering they
- are fully aware of him
- can suppress his abilties
- can teleport and stop stasis, as seen after the citadel explosion
@@bruderdasisteinschwerermangel I'd imagine the fact they are easy to inslave as shown by the combine and them on xen that gman and his employer probably didn't see them to much of a threat
I also assume species like the nihilanth also could block out gman as gman explained with it dead he and his employers could control xen now.
I believe to me anyway the combine and other alien spices presented in half life despite how big the combine may be are all seen as sort of futile as compared to his and possibly other races that employ him.
Only really humans could create a bootstrap device and also out pace combine in portal tech so I believe humans have a possibility of posing a threat to this race so they probably imployed and or just sent one of their own to deal with us humans and I assume his knowledge of humans he sees the task as imployment as a direct translation to human communication it is shown gman stueggle alot to talk.
I believe the entire goal really is to set humans and combine backwards I honestly believe gman is a meer spec of dust compared to grand schemes of what ever his employer (species or group) has planned
Again we see in half life alyx that gman can be contained by using vortigaunts so I believe the vortigaunts being freed by Freeman (ironic name almost as if it was set in stone ) may lead to a rival of g man's revealing them selves to setting alternative motives to help fight back ?
Half life lore is confusing I'm sad that maybe now it may go on with mystery's left unanswered or what the hell the universe is really like in half life.
I don't think I need gman explained but what this video discussed showing us a glimpse of what the combine really look like or even getting answers to a hint of what gmans plans are.
Sadly half life a story focused game really was always just tech demos for valve and alyx showed vr tech I don't think we'll get a sequal any time soon they probably will do a portal vr game but I doubt it will have any story probably be focused around the pure puzzle element like a continuation of portal multiplayer playing as a robot doing tests over say explanations to portals place in the half life world.
Epistle 3 genuinely makes me cry. I don't know why.
True ending: Whatley started the Combine
Tf
Still left me with loads of questions, but good ending and well read, thanks.
On a scale of the infinite universe and along nonlinear time, the human story will always be tragic - there are no victories and no happy endings as we might conceive of them in our limited comprehension of time and space. It is so immeasurably beyond our comprehension to wonder about whether there was 'a Dyson sphere' or 'the Dyson sphere' of the Combine, I am surprised Gordon retained his sanity after what he saw, maybe there was some good to him being a physicist after all. Humanity was naive to think the Combine had plans for Earth - perhaps they hardly noticed Earth and it's demise at all. At the end, I feel like the real reason Valve never greenlit Episode 3 is that they never could convey the sheer magnanimity and futile horror of their tale through an FPS game.
HP Lovecraft would have approved of Episode 3, as told by Mark Laidlaw.
The shore is ''Lost Coast''
Valve said lost coast was non canonical.
I know the Half-Life series isn't going to be abandoned by Valve, but it's good that we have closure now after all this time; it might be the end of an era, but having closure is better than leaving us with uncertainty...

This was also written by Marc Laidlaw who was head writer for all of Half-Life, Half-Life 2 and all episodes, so, this was likely the story he had prepared when Valve was committing to episodic format, and using the Half-Life 2 source engine, but was scrapped when Valve decided to develop a Half-Life game for new experiences. In other words, Valve wanted the next Half-Life game to be in VR or AR and at LEAST in source 2 when that engine is complete, and basically told Laidlaw, "We want to play with gameplay ideas first, we may need to change or scrap your story and we don't have anything super compelling for you until we finish."

You frogot to transposed the borealis from a luxury vessel to a research ship
So when he says this is my final episode, he probably means he’s retiring, and Alyx will most likely be the main protagonist in HL3
You are pretty much right
You sure he wasn't talking about himself retiring?
Plot twist, Half-Life Alyx is a sequel and Episode 3 will be a prequel.
The only reason why he was allowed to release this is probably cause the story has changed. You can't release something like this, even if u change the names. You'd be sued. This was the original script, before he left I bet. What he prob means is he left Valve like many of the original team members. So their vision is different than what the original team was.
I think "luxury liner" was meant to be a stand-in for "icebreaker", because the Borealis is definitely not a "luxury" ship. combineoverwiki.net/wiki/Borealis_(Aperture_Science_ship)
Damn, now I feel empty. I can't believe we have to say good bye to Gordon. His and Alyx relationship was interesting, and now its just gone. Damn
If Episode 3 was going to be the last time we saw Gordon (in infinite finality), maybe Half Life 3 would have had Adrian Shephard as the lead protagonist?
Not really. Epistle 3 (if considered canon) will only mark the end of relationship between G-Man and Freeman. G-Man will dump Gordon as foreseen in EP2. Freeman will be literally, a free man, going on his own path deciding his own fate without being told.
Awesome video dude! I did something similar but you definitely made it awesome by putting some visuals in from the game!

Gordon started off as a clueless assistant on a ride, and that's just how he ended. But damn if the journey wasn't magnificent.

The Borealis phasing in and out of existence... that is so cool, just imagine what possibilities in regards to new, innovative and stunning visuals, physics and gameplay mechanics that could have given birth! gravity that changes, time loops, the terrain itself maybe... would certainly look cool and give you new possibilites you wouldn't even have thought about before (kinda like Portal works... first easy experiments with a physical principle, then gradually more complicated things and phenomena you can use to your advantage, i.e. acceleration, dropping objects on things or launching them and using them as projectiles and so on). Would have been pretty schwifty, but I don't know if we will get a sequel or if Project Borealis will deliver or get released anyway...
Even if borealis gets released it will not be a cannon to half life universe it will not be the official Half-Life 3 game, it's not made by valve it's just a mod or a fan game don't call it a official Half-Life 3 game. Just please don't!
People keep saying they aren't making HL 3 and that's a huge fucking lie. It took them years to make HL 2. They put it on a whole new engine. Finally, people are hyping the FUCK out of HL3. They wanna get it just right. And I bet they wanna put it on a new engine. HL: Alyx was a prototype in a way. A taste to see if they are going in the right direction. You guys forget how EASY it is to fall out with your audience. Just look at Cyberpunk 2077. Those who love you can quickly turn. I'm sure Valve is being very very very careful with what they do in this final episode. If it is the final episode of HL or of Gordon himself.
Im going to need valve to revolutionize the gaming industry one more time. I’ve been quite literally waiting my whole life.
glad the community is making fan games of the original story idea, with things like project borealis and valve's own new story/ timeline things look bright for half life finally
FINALLY Half-Life 2: episode three! I wont die after all :D i cant live without Half-Life.
This is Gordon's canonical voice
Jesus..... What a story. Really got me feeling some type of way.
Well now we know that this ain't true and it doesn't happen
It was what was meant to happen, they retconed it
If this is actually what the working plot of Episode 3 was supposed to be then no wonder it got canned and sent straight to development hell
2:12 images that precede unfortunate events
Why in the hell did those fucking developers not finish episode 3 right after episode 2. This would have been an awesome ending...................................
I agree. I think it's insane. Even if the episodic content turned out to be a big bust, they should have pulled through to bring the story to a place that makes sense for HL3.
So this is how he had in mind: a endless checker flag at the very tale end. He wanted it to be left with no end just so Valve's coming writers would take up his mantle. Now the question still remands. How does Valve live up to this? Frankly, I don't think that's what Laidlaw wants out of this. He called it a fanfiction, so I'll leave it at that, as well.
its still so frustrating that we havent gotten a proper end to this story.
The half life universe is one of the most interesting ones to me. It's always been about hope and resistance in the face of an absolutely bleak world and a seemingly unbeatable foe
I'm honestly glad this is now noncannonical tbh. I love Marc Laidlaw but this is just too grim.
With Gordons story finished, that would've allowed a new team to do whatever they want with HL. I really don't understand how they could've decided to cancel EP3. With 2 expansions already existing, I just don't believe developement cost was any concern. If anything, there was probably discord between the different writers about what the ending should be.
Discord within the team itself.
A final letter to shepherd
Press F to play Traige at dawn
As a Half-Life fan i'm really grateful we got this. I really really wish there was something like this for the Chrono saga
Ending was a bit unsatisfying but I'll take what I can get.
well, the ending changed with half life alyx, so we have a new hole story and valve basically just throw to the trash epistle 3
edit: glad they did that

So we have to thank Alyx Vans for being a die hard yandere
So, Gordon has failed? He forgot and was forgotten, lost his old friends, the rebellion is still active and he gave up...
Alyx didn't sound that upset when the advisor killed him
It hurts ;_;
Project: Borealis is trying to create this as a game. It’s pretty neat, you might wanna check it out!
why fuck with me so much we finally get some closure and i don't even know if the resistance failed or not i'm actually crying
Totally explains why getting out a Half Life 3 at this point is very difficoult from the viewpoint of a Developer. They had a tied up story with some sort of closure that never came out but still remains necessary for the core audience. And yet people want a sequel. I can understand how someone would drop a project like this. Also, it seems they (Valve) planned to (at least to some extend) conclude the story of Gordon Freeman with Episode 3, maybe because they felt the ending of the success of the series was closing in and they rather wanted to end it with dignity before it sinks like a ship. But then they struggled and rather remained with the Episode 2 cliffhanger than pushing a product that might not have been worthy of the series greatness. Of course I also know about all the financial backgrounds in Valve at that time, something not every theorist puts into concideration when talking Episode 3.
Look at the year you posted for the leak
.... OH MAN! HAHA! Whoops.
aw i never noticed how sad dog is after eli dies
Not the end I wanted and not what i expected.
Perhaps Half Life 3 is the Alyx Vance story. Now that VR Alyx is coming out, maybe they are hinting that she is the new main character. Based on this story, it seems HL3 takes place in the future where Gordon is waiting for her? Will she be a different person now under Gmans control? What will he do with her?
