there is something just entrancing about watching someone who is so adept at what they do and has such a passion in it, tinkering with all these tools and machines that i don't even understand
It would be cool to see a *comparable* handmade ring vs mass produced ring. Besides the chunk of carbon, these two don't have much in common. Your work is lovely, but theyre too different. It would be informative to see comparable settings or styles so the benefits you're mentioning (the polishing and proper sizing) are what's actually being compared. Or similar price points - what does a $10k handmade ring look like vs a $10k mass produced ring?
@@cecilyerker then don't title it handmade versus mass produced if you aren't going to do an actual comparison. He's the one who came up with the concept, not anyone demanding it for "their viewing pleasure".
I don’t know anything about making jewelry, but your videos are so calming and your craftsmanship is amazing. Love the music in the background and the attention to detail.
From a fellow jeweler, great video!! This is a key point in jewelry manufacturing that alot of people don't talk about. In mas production every corner is cut to maximize the bottom line. When jewelry is handmade properly (where every single component can be polished during the process) it is purely art.
Yes! I worked in a shop that specialized in making custom fine jewelry pieces, and we always tried our best to help people understand that our prices were higher because of the craftsmanship behind them. My engagement ring was a custom piece, and 6 years later I still love it so much. The ring you made is beautiful, and I think showcases your point in a gorgeous way.
Hello! Since you worked in a shop I’d like to ask you a few questions. My bf purchased my ring from Israel and I love it but it seems to be quite flat which I don’t mind because I did dot want a super bulky ring but the issue when I saw the ring in person and tried it on to see if it would fit I came across the issue that it may be difficult to purchase a band because it wouldn’t go directly under the band like all other rings. The shape is a pear diamond and I remembered how Bobby White edited (?) this ring and I was wondering if it is also a possibility that I can raise the ring a bit to be able to fit a band directly under it? Also since I live in LA I feel it would be difficult to find a good craftsman that I can be confident that will give me what I want and I won’t have fear of going to one and thinking he may replace the diamond or try to scam us. Hopefully you see this ! Thank you
Bobby White I love your work. I am 14 and my hobby is making things from metal. Every day I am 30 min or more on my workbench. My uncle is goldsmith and it is really nice their. I learned alot from him and your video’s.
I would love to have this type of work. One where precision and care to detail is integral to what you produce. And as an introvert, I’d be ecstatic working solo.
It's actually pretty easy. It depends of course on what kind of jewellery you're looking at. When it comes to high end jewellery, it's all about the details. If you're getting one of those, I imagine it's quite an investment, so take time examining it. Bring a loupe, and check that all the stones are set in properly, i.e. that they don't move and that there is no gap between the setting and the stone (under the prong or around the rubover). Check the polishing, aspecially around the prongs. Things should be alingned well and not wonky. If you look at mass produced stuff and focus on the details, you see that things just don't properly fit together. Also the price. If something is way too cheap, it's not going to be handmade.
@@NocturemRaven i mean most people dont know how to use a loupe properly and even what theyre looking for in a correctly/well set diamond. My best advice would be to find a jeweller that you trust (althought might be a biased opinion as i am a jeweller) but when im trying to sell a ring i explain the hand making process and my customers learn to trust in my products.
It's actually from bare eye can notice the difference. Mass production jewelleries always having some areas that cannot be sanded or polished properly. However, very high skill Stone Setters and a pciece casted from a good Master (well calculated) can bring the quality very close to the Hand-made one. But because of Mass Production, it's hard to achieve 100% units having the same quality.
its hard to deal with these videos...the incredible beauty that is made from simple things...the craftsmanship is astounding. just want to own them all. no wonder they cost so much. Jewlery is such a thing of beauty.

what i absolutely love about this ring, is that it doesn't cover up the point of the stone at the bottom. so gorgeous and such a statement. I adore your work.
Your work station soothes my whole being. Like it's so clean and organized. The ring is gorgeous too! The craftsmanship and the details in this video is awesome! When you started placing the stones I was at awe. Maaan your artist and steady hand is amazing.
I enjoy your videos. Handmade jewelry fabrication is in danger of becoming a loss art due to mass productions. I'm taking classes to learn how to design and fabricate jewelry by way of multiple methods. Thank you for making these videos and sharing
Beautiful work, Bobby. I had my platinum engagement ring hand forged by Victor Canera a few years ago and I haven't purchased a CAD/cast ring since. I'll never go back. My setting looks like it did the first day I got it, the workmanship is exquisite. It's so nice to see others make rings in this manner, it's *true* craftsmanship. So many people focus all of their energy on the stone(s) and only care about the "style" of the mount. To me, it's like hanging a Renoir in an Ikea frame.
This is why I absolutely love RUclips. You can find yourself suck into a rabbit hole of videos you never would have even considered looking up. Fascinating stuff!
Yes!! Couldn't agree more. Thank you for making this video, a lot of people don't realize that when you go the mass produced route you sacrifice really high quality standards, so getting the information out there is so important. Beautiful work!
As someone who's looking at having such a piece made, this was great to watch, and helps me see what I'm supposed to look for. Absolutely beautiful work, and does justice to that stone. And credit due for the production of the video, the macro shots are fantastic.

Where have you been all my life 😮 Love these videos. I'm a goldsmith and diamond setter of 30 years and I love old school technique. The high finish details you can get behind in the hidden sections. So much cad one part cast out there. True craftsman I'm inspired. Lusting over that workshop lol
Thank you for this. I do know what I am looking at with stones but never realised the advice on the setting before. Great vid. Gorgeous ring. Lucky girl!
Ok so I thought I'll either be bored to tears or love this. Thank goodness it was the latter! Really enjoyed the style of the video, explanations, and music! Thank you for this 😊
Yes! We picked a handmade custom setting and it was a lot pricier but well worth it. Expert setting makes all the difference in making the stone shine!
As a fellow goldsmith I applaud your work and your defense on why handmade is much more expensive than mass produced jewelry. I know a few people who were in the mass production side of jewelry making and when they tried to make jewelry the old fashioned way they completely failed since they are used streamlined and machine dependent ways of creating jewelry. This job is both tough on the body and mind and having a customer trying to cheapen the price on our hard work pisses me off a bit. It takes so many years to learn this craft and actually takes a lifetime to even master.
Would love to do things like this. Working with small details is something I think I would enjoy so much. But I don't know how I would. Thank you for showing of your craft!
@Bobby white, this was amazing to watch! you showed the process clearly, and i enjoyed watching , both from the perspective of someons into metal shaping processes and also someone into jewellery! a small question though, at minute 10:10 for example you cut the metal and polish with rough all near the diamond, how does it not get affected? is it that you're careful an not touching it? or are you relying on the diamond's hardness not to get scratched ? i'm curious!
It took 2 minutes for me to figure out what an “air made” ring was. Beautiful work. I have diamond setters in my family and know it takes years to get to this level of execution.

That was a very good try Bobby at explaining Handmade vs Cast or CAD/Cast one point I could add is that a handmade ring last twice / three times that of a cast because of the work Harding
Aldo Cipollone except those solder joints will always be the weak spot... and what if future work is done on this ring by someone different and they are unaware of all the solder in this- it could open up and fall apart. Its just my opinion but this design would have been better made as a cast piece. It would still be one of a kind and hand made.
