    I've been going through my craft room with this method. I was clearing out some tote bags that ended up in the room that didn't belong there. I went downstairs to put them in the box they belong in and found others laying on the floor. I put them all away at the same time and underneath those found some missing blankets that belonged to my daughter. She was so excited to get her blankets back! She took them to her house so they left mine! So the tote bags were cleaned up in 2 spaces, plus was able to remove 3 blankets that didn't even belong to me! All because of the Take it There Now step!

    I've really enjoyed these prompts. While I watched the "Clear the Floor" prompt, I was able to get the last few items off my craft/dining room floor. I still have two big totes that are holding me back. One is full of my mom's pure wool yarn stash (I hope to knit this yarn into a sweater ... or five!), and the other is full of my kids' special children's books. I can't think where to put them, and I can't bear to part with them. No matter what question I ask myself, I still can't make a decision. But the rest of the floor is clear!

    I think the frustrating thing for me with the limits of the container method is that I truly did not know how to make the decisions involved. It is obvious that space is finite, but the actual decision making process was difficult until I came to understand what I do, what I want to do, what I will do with the items that I have. I think, for junk journalers, it has to be MORE than seeing the possibilities of what we can do with all these items - ALL the journals we could possibly make. Before we make the decision of what to declutter - what to donate- our brain has to decide what we actually want to do. What journals we want to make and then we can decide which of the things will facilitate doing that! Then we can take the step of deciding if something that is trash IS actually trash, which of the things to give away or donate and then follow the process from there. But until our brain accepts a limit - that we cannot save everything - decluttering is impossible. I think most of us want to save everything and we’re not yet at a place where we can accept that the container is the boundary. Learning how to figure out what we want to begin with is really the beginning. I think it’s a mental thing. I can’t figure out how to explain it, but until my brain knew what I wanted to do as a junk journaler - which journals I actually wanted to make (out of all the possibilities) - I could not decide which items I could declutter. Once I knew that I wanted to make vintage journals, I could actually move out the things that wouldn’t fit that style and I no longer buy or collect items that don’t fit a vintage style. It’s definitely a limiting decision, but it’s a limit my brain understands and accepts. AND I can move on to make the subsequent decisions. I hope that helps somebody who may read this comment.

      One thing that Natasa at Treasure books said that resonated with me is that there will always be more. Don't feel the pressure to keep or buy everything, because there will always be more. It may not be the exact same thing but there will be more of something.

    • @BeAgainBooks
      @BeAgainBooks 14 дней назад +4

      @PatWalden yes! I think that’s true. I think we over collect, thinking of the future and what may not be available. A fear of scarcity drives so many of us, and a lack of confidence in our own creativity with what might be available.

      Wow I think you nailed it too here !! Totally makes sense !! And yes there will always be more stuff to accumulate as well. I have a storage bin full of recycled things (cardboard, bags, cereal boxes etc …that my husband packed up and stored it)…I told him the other day; need to take out that bin and put it all out for recycling (there’s so much and I’ve since collected)…I committed to a container in my cube system for that type of stuff and it’s almost at capacity. So that extra bin can go !

      Yes! I'm relying on the other versions of me in the multiverse to do those other things, live those other possibilities, make those other projects. *This* version of me has limited time and energy to focus on the things that *I* most want to do. That makes it a lot easier to let go of the supplies for those other projects or hobbies.

    I have no problem decluttering most of my house, but I have a much harder time clearing out my craft room. Every item in my craft room was saved or bought because it can be used for some project or other. I can think of a purpose for everything. I got rid of a bunch of stuff related to crafts that I’m no longer interested in, and I still have too much stuff. I have to be realistic about how many projects I’ll actually be able to complete in my lifetime. In the last, I thought the solution was to buy more storage containers. Thanks to Dana’s container concept, I now know I can’t keep trying to organize before I declutter. I am loving following along with this craft room challenge.

    • @persephonebasilissa5109
      @persephonebasilissa5109 13 дней назад +2

      My new insight is to prioritize even the things I still want to do. Right now, I'm letting go of the things that are low or medium-low priority.
      As I age, I'll start letting go of medium priority items, then medoum-high ones. Eventually, I'll only be left with the highest-priority projects to focus my limited time and energy on.

    For scissors, my answer to “Where would I look for this first?” is the nearest possible drawer. I keep scissors multiple drawers in almost every room. I did this to avoid the problem of forgetting to put them away in only one spot when I finished using them. (Same with pens/pencils). I make sure to keep the drawers declutterred enough to fit a pair of scissors and a pen or pencil.

    Thank you for this series! I have been very motivated to address multiple areas in my home including my craft room, which I have been very resistant to letting things go. I am more open now to think first of what I want to specialize on…. what I want to craft with going forward. I want to go back to my scrapbooking and card making roots. So I’m looking at my endless supplies with new eyes and plan to donate many technique supplies that I don’t plan to use going forward. I look forward to my goals being more accessible and actually knowing WHAT I have for a change! Thanks again for this collaboration and all the similar videos being posted lately on the One Hour Better concept!

    I just recently went through my digitals on my computer and got them really organized. I already had them named by the maker, but then I added to the name and put florals or grungy or forest animals, whatever, so it’d be even faster to look through them. I have a separate folder that’s just for Christmas with all the different shops in it and another one just for Halloween with all the different ones under it because those are my two main holidays that I make journals for. Also, when I’m going to make a journal, I sit down at my laptop and find whatever that will go with whatever theme that I have in my mind and only print those out. I don’t print out a whole kit when I buy it, that way I don’t have a lot of leftover digital bits and whatever is left over I send it along to the buyer with my journal.

While I understand “finishing” a project counts as decluttering when can we start new projects? When it’s “perfect”? I’d like to start some new craft projects but I feel like I shouldn’t as craft room has shelves or containers that I should declutter first. 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️😞

I’ve watched a lot of other people and how they store craft items, but I once I start to pull it all together, I realize, well I don’t have the same amount as this person did or I don’t have the room for that type of storage etc. There are so many variables. What I end up with is a whole other pile of potential storage containers 😂 none of which seems to be working. Most have to do with space. Anyway, I guess like Cori said, I will have to just keep trying. Meanwhile, things are getting more piled up and it’s becoming very expensive.😂 I am trying to stop on the excuses, but there sure seem to be many of them! I think 5 minutes to clean up is unrealistic for most junk journal makers or mixed media artists. I think each maker should set their average cleanup time and be consistent with that, whether it be 5, 15, or even 30 minutes.

    • @trumax33
      @trumax33 13 дней назад +3

      The 5 minutes is a good gauge for knowing if a space is "under control". After spending the last couple of years working on decluttering my home, it is simplified to the point that I can do a "5-minute pick-up" before bed & it's ready for the next day. A general rule is: (Dana's right! If an area (closet, kitchen, car, garage, craft room, purse) is consistently out of control/messy....there's too much stuff in it. I have found this to be true about all areas I've had issues with! 😊
